Larry Dyer dreamed up this adventure for any club members who wanted to participate. Larry & Jan Dyer and Ron Spurlock & Leslie Mello set out to visit special and historic spots on the road to Springfield. The cover photo shows one of their stops on the tiny stretch of Route 66 that went barely across the southeast corner of Kansas at one time. (See page 11) Leslie and Jan really enjoyed on all of the great entertainment that went on all weekend at the Festival. Lots of acts were from nearby Branson. Leslie said there were so many people at the “Big & Rich” concert on Friday night they couldn’t get near it. Friday morning it rained, so they went to a private car museum nearby. Saturday was a full day of activities. Larry ran in one of the races and came in 13th! He was also recognized as the oldest race participant, but we won’t mention that. The Saturday Parade had at least 100 beautiful cars and Leslie blew up her cell phone taking so many pictures. Then there were all of the cars to see at the car show for blocks around town. They took a little drive out to an historic Sinclair station in Gay Parita, MO that always attracts foreign visitors as a symbol of the American Road. Saturday night they had tickets to the “Three Dog Night” concert that Jan and Leslie LOVED!!! They even capped their adventure off by staying at the Rest Haven Court, which is a 40’s style motor court

Gary’s Gay Parita Sinclair station located 25 miles west of Springfield, MO on Historic Route 66. (3 miles west of Halltown on Old 66, as if that helps)

Another stop at a Route 66 landmark, Spencer Garage and Cafe in Spencer, MO.

instead of a modern Holiday Inn type hotel! Tom Atchison and Julia Kelsey were marching to a different drummer. They enjoyed staying at the host hotel, the University Plaza, with all the bikers. Thursday night all six of the Legends attended the great Rt. 66 Documentry Film at the Gillioz Theater. On Friday Tom & Julia drove around to local wineries. They also visited the Wilson Creek Battlefield, where the third battle of the Civil War was fought and where the first Union General was killed. They visited the Civil War Caves, on the lands of the Ozark Indians and site of a beautiful waterfall. Then they ended the day by watching the Festival Parade downtown. Saturday they enjoyed the car show on the town square and around all the downtown streets between the square and their hotel. Then on to another winery and distillery near Branson which is the oldest “Legitimate” distillery in Missouri. Ending the day with a great meal at an obscure local restaurant. A great get-away weekend for them.

which may still be crossed. This was part of a compromise after a disagreement between the county and the Kansas Route 66 Association as Federal funds used for construction of the new bridge required demolition of the old. The bridge had been listed with the National Register, which prohibited condemnation of the old bridge. In the year 2000, country singer Brad Paisley performed “Route 66” on the bridge for the TLC special, “Route 66: Main Street America”.

On the cover: The Rainbow Bridge is an old bridge over Brush Creek approximately two miles west of Riverton, Kansas on former U.S. Route 66 (US-66), now a county road. The bridge is a single-span concrete Marsh arch bridge and is the sole surviving bridge of this type on the entire length of the former highway. Two other Marsh arch bridges were also located on US-66 in Kansas, both over the Spring River. It was built in 1923. The bridge has often been covered with graffiti, but was recently re-painted white. The bridge has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places (as the Brush Creek Bridge) on March 10, 1983, due to its connection with US-66 and is also a Kansas state landmark. In 2014, Kansas Rt. 66 Historic Byway nominated a bypassed 2.1 miles (3.4 km) section of original 1926 highway, which ran south from the Brush Creek to the Willow Creek bridge near Baxter Springs, for an NRHP listing. The bridge is fairly narrow, and due to traffic on the road, a replacement bridge has been built. The road curves toward the new bridge toward Baxter Springs, but a short, one-way road carries traffic to the Rainbow Bridge,

Next on Legends’ agenda is Good-Guys Lone Star Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway. Good-Guys has generously donated space inside the vendor area for a Patriot Paws booth. We are asking Legends members to volunteer to staff the booth for a few hours Friday, September 29-Sunday, October 1. We will be telling people about Patriot Paws:1. Their training program, 2. Their impact on Veterans, 3. The prison inmates who train the dogs and receive training themselves,4. Puppy raisers and breeders who furnish dogs well- suited to this endeavor.5. One of the main things we try to do is tell people about the various Charity Cards they can sign up for at Kroger, Tom Thumb, Amazon Smiles, etc. that don’t cost them a penny, but provide a steady income stream for Patriot Paws.

atPlease sign up with Bill Preston (405) 412-0502 to work the booth at Good-Guys that weekend. Pick the hours and day(s) you want to work the booth. Pick your hours: Friday-8am-5pm

This is the same weekend as the Lewisville Western Days Car Show on Saturday and the Legends filling the car corral at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday. So, plan ahead and choose the shift you want to work at Good-Guys with the other events in mind. If you are entering a car in Good-Guys, you can drive right in and park near the inside vendor area. If you’re not entering a car you’ll need to buy a ticket. You’ll have to walk into the infield, ride the shuttle or hitch hike with an exhibitor.
