A birthday tribute to Gary SelmanAfter 45+ years in the wholesale forklift business, many readers may recognize the name Gary Selman. As his son, I hope your memories are fond ones. When he started in this crazy wholesale business, it was much smaller than it is today. He was then the World’s Smallest Wholesaler. He still is today, and still successfully providing for our family. On September 10th, he will celebrate his 74th year on this earth. I wish my DAD, my first mentor in this industry, a very happy birthday. I remember the first time my dad came to me with an old call list of clients he’d lost touch with. I was frightened to call them, not knowing a thing about a forklift, a sales process, or really how to speak to anyone in business. I was 17. Fast forward 20 years later and I’ve been able to build my success in this industry with everything he taught me. From making phone calls (even the ones I didn’t want to make,) to the specs of forklifts (even those that are way older than me,) to the joy of “making the deal,” I learned everything from my dad. It’s rare we get an opportunity to look back on our foundations for a career, but every time I wake up in the forklift business, it’s all because of him. Throughout the years, it’s treated me very well, and for that, I thank him. I thank him as a son, and as a student. It’s a great joy to do business with my dad! Some fathers & sons have sports, fishing, or other bonding experiences … but my dad & I share war stories, deals, specs, etc. And I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Love you Dad,Your son, Baron. And how can I not do an advertisement for my own father in a wholesale magazine???

Genesis Lift – Gary Selman – 201-519-3552. Call him; he always has some great wholesale forklifts available. Don’t forget, he buys them too!

U.S. Equipment Rental Revenue Projected to Exceed $51 billion in 2018

The equipment rental industry in the United States is expected to generate $35.8 billion in revenue

and outpace gross domestic product (GDP) by more than four times in 2014, according to the American Rental As-sociation’s (ARA) latest forecast from the ARA Rental Market Monitor™. Economic data and analysis for ARA Rental Market Monitor are compiled by IHS Inc., (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of critical information and insight.

In the U.S., total equipment rental rev-enue is forecast to grow 7.6 percent in 2014 to reach $35.8 billion, 10.5 percent in 2015 to reach $39.6 billion and an-other 10.2 percent in 2016 to reach $43.6 billion, surpassing the previous indus-try record of $36.9 billion in 2007. The growth rate is expected to be 8.9 percent in 2017 and 7.7 percent in 2018, with total rental revenue of $51.2 billion.

“The U.S. economy slowed more than expected in the first half of the year, but

equipment rental demand has remained strong and rental growth will still handily outperform the overall economy. Look-ing forward, commercial construction and housing starts will contribute to growth in the construction and industrial and general tool segments,” says Scott Hazelton, managing director with IHS Global Insight.

Over the next two years, the construction and industrial segment and the general tool segment will experience double-digit growth in U.S. rental revenue. In 2015, construction and industrial rental revenue is projected to increase 10.7 percent and general tool 11.7 percent and again in 2016 with increases of 10.4 percent and 11.6 percent respectively.

The party and event segment is expected to continue it same steady growth, with revenue increasing 4.2 percent in the U.S. in 2014 to reach $2.6 billion.

Trelleborg Launches Interfit Website Designed to Make Ordering and Fitting of Forklift Tires Easy

T relleborg Wheel Systems, the world’s leading producer of solid industrial tires, announced the

launch of the Interfit USA website today. This website is designed to enable con-sumers to buy forklift tires and also plan the fitting of them.

The Interfit website is easy to use and does not require tire consumers to have any knowledge of tires. By logging onto www.interfit-usa.com and selecting the “find forklift tires” tool, customers are asked some basic information on their forklift and average hours of usage. A list of available tires is then provided. After the tire is selected, the consumer is walked through scheduling and pay-ments of the tires. The ordering process takes a matter of minutes to complete.

Jason Canning, Program Manager, says: “The Internet has changed the way we purchase goods. The array of products we are able to purchase online has exploded. We believe forklift tires should

be no different. Through our 500-plus nationwide Interfit authorized service providers we will be providing consum-ers with the ability to purchase our tires installed on their vehicles for the very first time.”

“Using the proper tire can keep a forklift in service longer and reduce mainte-nance costs. Interfit is another example of how we are focused on providing the best Total Value of Ownership. We are giving tire consumer the tools they need

to make an educated tire purchase. We believe that the forklift is the most impor-tant machine on earth.”

Trelleborg Wheel Systems is the pre-ferred tire supplier for the world’s leading original equipment Manufacturers. The company specializes in premium brands including Monarch Press-On tires, Mon-arch M2, Elite XP and Expert.

Trelleborg Wheel Systems is a leading global supplier of tires and complete wheel systems for agricultural and forest machinery, forklift trucks and other materials-handling vehicles. The company offers highly specialized solutions to create added value for customers. Trelleborg is a partner to leading manufacturers of tractors and agricultural machines. www.trelleborg.com/wheelsystems

Koke Incorporated was established in 1972 in Upstate New York as a manufacturer of material handling

and industrial equipment. Our business model - which primarily is involved in the development and sale of non-powered equipment - has seen us focusing our efforts in the following four areas: warehouse, safety, dock, and lifting equipment.

Company Strategy

• Purpose: To offer material handling/industrial equipment products only within our areas of expertise at competitive prices.

• Vision: To provide our customers with exceptional customer service alongside our competitive prices. We intend to build long-term – if not life-long - relationships with our customers.

• Mission Statement: We will offer quality products backed by a staff that has extensive product knowledge of design and applications. We will support our products with the most efficient customer service system in the industry.

We make sure that our staff has thorough product knowledge of applications and design, allowing them to help our customers make the right equipment decisions the first time.

• Goals: Continue to grow each year. Design and deliver custom products, ensuring that a solution can be found for nay customer’s problem. Develop new products in response to customer interests. Constantly refine existing products to make them more advantageous in the marketplace.

Scope of Work

Koke Incorporated manufactures material handling and industrial equipment, with a business model that primarily develops and sells non-powered equipment.

Financial Considerations

The company expects to reach its desired growth each year and does not anticipate serious cash flow problems, as we believe that our average profitability each month will remain consistent.

Reduce Lift Truck Damage to Pallet Rack and PlantPre-engineered industrial guard railing systems can increase safety and decrease costs

Like busy freeways, plants and ware-houses have had to squeeze more traffic into less space as the cost of real estate has risen over the years. With more product and equipment packed tighter, operating with more just-in-time logis-tics, the risk of lift truck impact is greater than ever today. That puts your people, production, and assets at risk.

OSHA estimates that 68,400 accidents occur annually involving powered indus-trial trucks. About 95,000 workers suffer some kind of injuries in these accidents, resulting in lost production, facility dam-age, and workers compensation claims.

“As plant managers try to bring as much rack and material into the warehouse as possible, lift trucks run tighter in the aisles, making impact more likely,” says John Ellis, a regional sales manager at Steel King Industries, a Stevens Point, Wis.-based manufacturer of pallet rack and warehouse safety products.

“Even the best of plant operations can expect some fork truck impact, so it is important to minimize any damage and

production downtime with the proper safety equipment – like a football player wearing a helmet and pads,” adds Ellis.

Pallet Rack Protection

Most of the damage in warehouse pallet rack occurs at the row end, where lift truck operators have to turn into the aisles, according to Ellis. If they miscal-culate going around the corner, they will swing into end row pallet rack.

Rack damage is also common along an upright’s first 6” to 12” of column from the floor due to lift truck impact, particu-larly at tunnels, drive thrus and intersec-tions, where maneuvering is tight. Additional damage can occur when lift truck operators push pallets, empty or with product, against end row up-rights, which can bend their diagonal or horizontal bracing.

“To prevent pallet rack damage from lift trucks at end rows and intersections, one of the cost effective methods is to install low-profile, high-strength, safety steel angle such as Steel King Guard Dawg

as protection along high-traffic routes,” says Ellis. To be most effective in these areas, he suggests the safety steel angle should protect 3” or 4”-wide upright columns, and offer right, left, or double-ended guards so it works with virtually all end row racks.

Such pallet rack protection can be particularly important in freezer applications where space is very restricted, the floor can be slippery, and reac-tion times slowed by the cold.

Whole Plant Protection

For more universal, plant and warehouse protection from lift truck damage, more compre-hensive pre-engineered indus-trial guard railing systems can offer more complete safety.

While some maintenance staff make and install their own in-house fabricated guard railing, this diverts them from their production and maintenance responsibilities. It also requires them to design the guard railing, purchase materials for it, fabri-cate it, drill it, paint it, and install it, when they are not experi-enced in engineering the railing for maximum safety.

A safer, more efficient answer in recent years has been pre-engineered, prefab-ricated industrial guard railing systems like Steel King Steel Guard®, which can protect a whole range of plant and ware-house applications. These applications can range from worker, production, in-ventory, and loading areas to walkways, aisles, mezzanines, and in-plant offices.

“Pre-engineered industrial guard rail-ing systems can serve as a visual and physical barrier between staging and work areas, including machinery such as conveyors, computer consoles, electrical panels, HVAC equipment, and freezer-cooler controls,” says Ellis.

Standard construction of the pre-engineered railing systems consists of corrugated steel rails that bolt to square tubular columns. The columns are pre-welded to heavy steel base plates, which are anchored to the concrete floor. An-chor bolts, steel post caps and rail hard-ware are usually included in the package. The rails and posts are usually painted a bright safety color for easy visibility.

Commercially available guard railing systems have a few advantages over in-house fabrications. First, they cost less due to mass component production, and have lower labor costs as well.

Second, these systems are easy to install. No core drilling, cutting, welding or painting is required. Installation can be handled by in-house personnel or distributors of the product.

Third, the pre-engineered, pre-fabricated guard railing systems are safer than in-house made since they are specifically designed for lift truck impact. They are also modular, expandable, and relocat-able, and individual parts can be re-placed if damaged. Nearly any rail length is available, which reduces installation time, and common lengths are stocked for quick order shipment.

Guard Railing System Specification

When talking about guard railing, you need to understand some terminology. Basic components include guard rails and posts. Figure 1 shows the two stan-dard railing heights: single high (18") and double high (42").

Two basic posts are shown in Figure 2. Center posts are used in most cases, for in-line or end posts. Where you need to make a 90-degree turn, corner posts are required.

“Most manufacturers treat rail ‘lengths’ not as the length of the rail itself, but as the center-to-center distance from col-umn to column,” explains Ellis. “Actual rail lengths are 4” to 5” less than the stat-ed length, depending on the post size.”

You can measure the areas you want to protect, or contact a distributor of guard railing to do it for you. Once you have decided on either a single or double high system, you can easily create a bill of material to compare various systems.

Two easy comparisons are price and value. It is easy to compare prices and component weights when analyzing a few proposals, but you should go one step farther.

“Since the rail will take the brunt of any lift truck impacts, you should compare the rail height, depth, and gauge or wall thickness,” says Ellis. “How many ribs or corrugations does the rail have? Is the rail edge “closed,” or is it “open”? Open edges usually require you to install a protective plastic stripping to cover the sharp edges of the steel.”

“The connection between the rail and the post is also important,” adds Ellis. “How many bolts are used for this connection? What grade or strength of hardware is supplied? Are connector holes or vertical slots provided? Slots allow you to adjust the posts on uneven floors.”

Other considerations include post size and gauge, base plate size and gauge, anchor size and quality, and type of finish. These considerations will also contribute to the structural strength, ap-pearance and maintenance of the railing system.

“What you are trying to achieve is a balance between heavy construction, purchase price, value, and ease of instal-lation,” concludes Ellis.

Properly Diagnose Your Customer’s Engine Problems

Engine Diagnosis Methods. Several techniques can be used to prop-erly diagnose your customer’s

engine problems. This month’s article will cover the engine diagnosis methods including: compression tests (dry & wet) and the leak down test. These tests are straightforward yet provide valuable information useful for diagnosis.

Compression Test – This test measures the dynamic pumping pressure of the cylinder when the crankshaft is rotated. This test should be performed when the engine is warm – not cold and not hot.

Dry Test – Install the compression gauge into the spark plug hole and crank en-gine over 5-10 revolutions. For consis-tency, crank the engine over the same number of revolutions for each cylinder. If one cylinder has a lower reading this indicates the problematic cylinder. The dry test should yield readings within 10% of manufacturer’s specifications. If no compression information is available, use 100 psi as a reference test pressure. However, it does not indicate whether the cylinder or piston rings are the cause. The wet compression test is effective at determining the source of the problem.

Wet Test – With the spark plug removed, squirt about one teaspoon of 30-weight motor oil into the spark plug hole. Take a compression reading and observe the dif-ference between the wet and dry tests.

• Readings from the wet test should not increase by more than 10 per-cent, cylinder to cylinder.

• If the compression increases with the wet test, the results identify the problem as the piston rings and/or cylinder walls. The theory behind this test is that the oil is providing a wet seal for the rings. If they are not sealing on their own they will when the oil creates a seal and an increase in compression will be observed.

• If the compression stays the same, the results point to the valve train. The theory is that when the rings are sealing, the oil will have no ef-fect on compression and therefore the valves are most likely the cause of the problem.

Leak Down Test – This test pinpoints specific leakage. This test uses a set of pressure gauges with a regulating device and can quantify the percentage of leak-age. This is a static test that takes more time to perform compared to a regular compression test.

The ignition system should be disabled and/or grounded to prevent shock or fire.

The engine must be at top dead center where both intake and exhaust valves are closed (compression stroke). Before pressurizing the cylinder, be sure that you can prevent the piston from moving in the cylinder (engine from turning over). Pressurize the cylinder through the spark plug hole at around 100-115psi. You will be able to measure the percentage of pressure leakage.

• Leak from crankcase indicates the piston rings are not sealing or a burnt piston.

• Leak from the air intake indicates a bent or burnt intake valve.

• Exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifold or muffler indicates a bent or burnt exhaust valve.

• Leak from the radiator indicates a leaking gasket or cracked cylinder head or block.

• If air is leaking from the companion cylinder it indicates a blown head gasket.

Properly functioning cylinders show a cylinder to cylinder leakage of less than 8%. A greater drop should prompt you to investigate further.

Each test provides different diagnosis in-formation and takes a different amount of time to perform. By using either method of diagnosis you will be able to provide your customers with accurate informa-tion and continue to provide the highest level of quality service available.

Information in this article has been provided from various engine rebuilding handbooks. Always use caution when performing these tests. All Industrial En-gine Service does not assume responsi-bility for any consequences that arise out of its application.

This month’s article was written by John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service. All Industrial Engine Service (AIES) was started by All Lift Service Company, a Komatsu forklift truck dealer-ship which was established in 1972. AIES was started to end warranty problems associated with other engine suppliers and provide the dealership with the highest quality remanufactured engines available. AIES remanufactures LP and diesel forklift truck engines for compa-nies and dealerships across the country.

Forklift Carbon MonoxideBy: Forklift Safety Training Services, Inc.

Carbon monoxide produced from propane (L.P) powered forklifts in warehouse applications is one of

the most common industrial hazards. Poisoning from this odorless, colorless and tasteless gas can result in serious neurological symptoms or persistent headaches, dizziness and nausea, while severe poisoning can result in brain or heart damage or even death. During cold winter months, carbon monoxide be-comes more apparent with warehouses being sealed off from the cold, creating inadequate ventilation.

The occupational Safety & Health Admin-istration (OSHA) standard for exposure to carbon monoxide prohibits worker’s ex-posure to more that 35 parts of the gas per million parts of air (ppm), averaged over an 8 hours workday. there is also a ceiling limit of 200 ppm (as measured over a 15 minute period). Non-com-pliance with this OSHA standard, CFR 1910.1000, can result in an initial maxi-mum fine of up to $7,000 and continued non-compliance or violations can impose the 10 fold penalty or fine of $70,000.

Low cost air quality monitoring and testing with confidential reports logged over an 8 hour workday is important for record keeping should carbon monoxide in your warehouse become a health or liability issue. Quarterly testing is recom-

mended due to seasonal temperatures, forklift usage and mechanical conditions such as tune-ups, worn out engines and leaking exhaust systems, all of which can be factors related to the incomplete burning of propane fuel which contains carbon, therefore elevating carbon monoxide levels.

If unacceptable carbon monoxide levels are detected, there are several inexpen-sive alternatives or options available. Installing a catalytic converter on a propane powered forklift can drastically reduce carbon monoxide emissions. A carbon monoxide detector with automat-ic sensors incorporated with ventilating fans or to automatically open and close a dock door can often prove effective. In some instances a simple tune-up is all that is required to meet the safety requirements and to reduce carbon mon-oxide to the required exposure limits.

UniCarriers Americas Announces New Factory-Owned DealershipUniCarriers Americas acquires New England Industrial Truck, Inc., a material handling retailer.

UniCarriers Americas Corporation, a leading manufacturer of material handling equipment, announces

its diversification into the material han-dling retail market with the acquisition of New England Industrial Truck, Inc. (NEIT), headquartered in Woburn, Mass.

NEIT has been an authorized dealer of UniCarriers Americas for more than 35 years. UniCarriers’ entrance into the U.S. retail market is designed to augment its high-performing dealer network by pro-viding the broadest sales coverage and highest quality aftermarket support.

The acquisition was finalized on August 1, 2014. Terms of the transaction are not disclosed.

“Adding factory-owned dealerships is a growth strategy for UniCarriers Ameri-cas in 2014 and beyond,” said Anthony Salgado, president, UniCarriers Ameri-cas. “This initiative is a component of our goals to strengthen and broaden our distribution network, and to support our existing dealer partners by growing

awareness and increasing the value of the UniCarriers brand.”

The new factory-owned dealership will operate under the leadership of Dick Rossi, who has been with the company since 1972 and has managed daily operations for the last 15 years. Rossi will report to James J. Radous III, execu-tive vice president, sales, UniCarriers Americas.

Covering a territory of six states, Mas-sachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and Rhode Island, NEIT currently has 84 employees and a strong commitment to customer service and its aftermarket business. NEIT is in one of the top 10 markets in North America, making it a strong partner.

“New England Industrial Truck is an exceptional business with a proven track record of strong customer service. We are pleased to join forces with their team, and look forward to growing the business in the New England region,” said Salgado.

UniCarriers Americas and NEIT have a long, successful relationship, begin-ning in 1978, when NEIT became an authorized Nissan Forklift dealership. Since then, NEIT has achieved numerous accolades from UniCarriers Americas that include gold level Service Excellence Program awards for 20 consecutive years, and honors as a distinguished Nis-san Forklift Nine winner 21 times. NEIT has also been a frequent member of the OEM’s dealer advisory group.

UniCarriers Americas Corporation was formed in 2013, when Nissan Forklift Corporation, North America joined forces with TCM America. UniCarriers Americas Corporation is a division of UniCarriers Corporation headquartered in Tokyo. The merger positioned UniCarriers Americas as the fifth largest material handling equipment manufacturer in the Americas market.

“We are thrilled to have a dealership whose reputation in their local market is as strong as NEIT,” said Radous III.

“By leveraging UniCarriers Americas’ superior products with NEIT’s sales experience, passion and knowledge of our industry, along with its dedication to customer service, there is no limit to the growth potential for our business in the New England region.”

During the past year, UniCarriers Americas has made several additional investments to provide the groundwork for its growth goals. It expanded its Marengo headquarters campus with a 120,000-square-foot manufacturing an-nex for additional manufacturing capac-ity, and has grown its product develop-ment department by 46 percent in the past year. UniCarriers Americas Cor-poration’s parent company, UniCarriers Corporation, is investing $80 million in a global research and development facility to be completed next year, which will shorten product development cycles and increase product technology capabilities.

Massive Airbag Recall Exposes Need for Hazmat Training

In response to an ongoing recall by the world’s second largest airbag manufacturer, auto parts dealers and

automotive service operations are ship-ping defective airbags in record num-bers. More than ten million airbags have now been recalled due to faulty inflators that can rupture and spray metal shrap-nel inside the vehicle. The manufacturer’s recall has so far affected car models from Honda, BWM, Toyota, Mazda, Nis-san, Fiat, Chrysler, Ford, and Subaru.

Airbag modules, or inflators, are equipped with an explosive propellant which deploys the airbag upon impact. Because of this explosive quality, the US Department of Transportation regu-lates the transport of airbags under its Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). Among the US DOT requirements is a mandate that every employee involved in the hazmat shipping process receives adequate training.

Parts dealers, service operations, and dealerships affected by the airbag recall must train employees on the rules for classifying, packaging, marking, labeling, and documenting the defective products

for transport. Overlooking the US DOT requirements for hazmat shipping can result not only in costly civil penalties (as high as $75,000 per violation), but incidents in transit and injury to workers –especially given the defective nature of the recalled airbags.

The Shipping Hazmat for Auto Parts and Service Operations online course is de-signed specifically for employees involved in shipping hazardous auto industry articles like airbags. Designed to satisfy the US DOT’s training requirement for hazmat employees at 49 CFR 172.704(c), the course also covers the latest rules for shipping common automotive hazmat

products like batteries, engines, paints, seatbelt pretensioners, and more. The cost for the online course is $179 per student. Parts managers can enroll their employees at Lion.com, or call Lion Tech-nology at 888-546-6511 to register.

The US DOT requires training for all hazmat employees once every three years. Employees must be trained within 90 days of starting work and cannot work unsupervised until trained. It is critical that auto parts shippers know the latest regulations. Recently, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administra-tion adopted new provisions for shipping explosive hazmat, including airbags.

Lion provides hazmat shipping and hazardous waste compli-ance training through nationwide public workshops, 24/7 online courses, and live webinars. BEUMER’s BG Software Suite Provides a Modular Control System

The BEUMER Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of conveying and loading equipment,

filling, palletizing and packaging equip-ment, and systems for sorting and distri-bution. The product range of this full-line supplier includes the BG software suite, which allows customers to control their material flows from start to finish. The suite can be adapted to each company’s special needs. Third-party products can be integrated without difficulty.

BG, which stands for BEUMER Group, is the name for the company’s software suite for high-level computer systems. The suite’s modular structure allows users to adapt it to their machinery and equipment and add modules at any time in order to optimize their material flows. The Beckum-based intralogistics specialist also provides the BG Fusion interface, which displays process data, reports and machinery statistics for all parts of the program. Users can call up

data on their monitor without having to switch between applications. BG Fusion is fully scalable, meaning it can run on desktop PCs as well as mobile devices like tablets.

Customized for each user

The left area of the interface displays important information in a compact form for all users. The main area is reserved for data relevant to the particular ap-plication. Three different desktops are available. Users can store their individual settings so that they can go right to work with the same data when they log in again. The user interface can also be switched between different languages. The web-based interface runs on all current Windows operating systems. Us-ers can export all data displayed on the screen to PDF or CSV files. A screenshot function is also included.

Smooth communication

The BEUMER Group Warehouse Control System (BG WCS) module allows the BG software suite to link up with the cus-tomer’s warehouse management system or ERP system via a network connection. Thus communication is possible between different control levels.

As a full-line supplier, the BEUMER Group can draw on many years of experience in control and automation technology. It is able to plan and imple-ment complex projects in intralogistics, including intelligent linking of machinery and systems and their integration into existing process control or merchandise

information systems. Custom-ers get everything they need from a single source, interfaces are avoided, and possible sources of error are eliminated.

BEUMER Group is an international leader in the manufacture of intralogistics systems for conveying, loading, palletising, packaging, sortation and distribution. Together with Crisplant a/s and Enexco Teknologies India Limited, the BEUMER Group employed some 3,700 people in 2013. The group generated an annual turnover of approximately 627 million EUR. With its subsidiaries and sales agencies, BEUMER Group is present in many industries world-wide. For further information visit www.beumergroup.com.

Filtering Through All The Questions

Some of the questions I receive have been “yes or no” answers. Then there are the “situation” answers or “what if” answers that is not so easily

cut and dry. Many of these involve filters or filtration systems.

So let us delve into the filtration systems. Why are they so important? Where are they used?

I am going to cover three basis floor cleaning machines: #1 Sweepers #2 Scrubbers #3 Sweeper/Scrubber Combination

May I also add that it does not matter who the manufacturer. Be it Tennant, Power Boss, Clark-American, Factory Cat or others, the filtration systems are very similar in design to accomplish the same end. And that is to ensure the healthiness of whatever system is in each unit. Okay, let’s look at each system.

#1 Sweepers: There are two styles of sweepers on the market todaythat can be purchased. They are a rider sweeper or a walk-behind sweeper.m Of course, the rider sweeper will clean more floor surface than a walk-behind machine, however, there will be more expense when purchasing a rider sweeper and, of course, more maintenance.

Here are the filters of each and how they relate to each machine. The walk-behind sweeper will usually have the following filters: • Gasoline Engine Air Filter, Oil Filter & Fuel Filter • The Dust Hopper Filte

On this equipment the question is about the hopper filter (usually after it has stopped picking up debris). My answer is always to empty the hopper and replace the hopper filter. This filter should be cleaned or replaced every 50 hours. I say this because the hopper filter can be cleaned with an air hose 4 to 5 times every 50 hours then replaced.

The rider sweeper has more complicated systems to deal with. They are, of course: • Gas (LPG Engine), Air Filter, Oil Filter & Fuel Filter • Again, the dust hopper filter. Nothing has

changed here either. • Hydraulic system you have to deal with not in

a walk-behind. In this system there exist the hydraulic in-line filters, the hydraulic tank filter and the hydraulic cap breather filter.

A wide variety of problems can occur as a result of neglect. If, for example, the in-line hydraulic filter were not replaced for a very long time; dirt gets into the hydraulic system that could cause all kinds of problems. This could include scratching, marring and wearing of

internal parts of the main hydraulic pump. To replace this unit can be expensive (upwards of $5,000.00) in some instances.

Up to now we have discussed only sweepers. When you start talking about scrubbers and sweeper/scrubbers there are a whole host of problems resulting from dirty filters. The sweeper/scrubber has the most maintenance of filters and are listed below: • Same as a sweeper, the engine, air, oil & fuel filter. • Hopper Filter (sometimes two filters) • Vacuum Fan Filter • Hydraulic Filters (include suction cap and

in-line filters) • Detergent flow filter • Solution Tank Filter • Recovery tank filter • If you have detergent recycling, you will have a

recycling filter.

In closing, I cannot stress the utmost importance of checking and replacing your machine filters. This mind set will help you filter through the answers.

ABC’s of Rebuilt Horizontal Carousels

The full benefi ts of Horizontal Carou-sels MAY not be fully understood by those that typically utilize rack and fi xed shelving. To better understand this EF-FICIENCY TECHNOLOGY, check out the notations and contact information noted below.

What are Horizontal Carousels?

Horizontal carousels are shelving rotating on a track. Carousels deliver parts to the operator instead of the picker walking to the location, and combined with software and pick-to-light, allow a single operator to pick multiple (typically between 8-16)

orders in a single picking batch. Because there are 2-4 carousels per pod, when the operator is picking an item from one carousel, the adjacent carousels auto-matically preposition for the next pick to eliminate waiting. Carousel technology allows a single operator to accurately complete hundreds of item transactions per hour in a fraction of the space of shelving.

How many items (SKU’s) fi t in a carousel?

This depends on your volume per SKU. Setups range from 4,000 to 12,000 cubic feet of storage per carousel pod. Typical SKU locations range from 0.25 to 2 cubic feet per slot, and completely fl exible within the system. Contact your local AS/R Dealer or AS/R directly to evaluate.

What kind of picking performance can I expect?

Anywhere from 200-400 transactions (lines) per hour in a “pick-&-toss” envi-ronment. Scanning, counting, bagging, or labeling at the carousel station can adjust this rate.

How much faster are carousels than manual picking?

That depends. Let’s say your manual pickers are currently doing 50 lines (transactions) per hour. 25-35 of the transactions are likely coming from faster moving SKU’s only take 15-20 minutes to pick. The other 15-25 items (slow to medium activity) are the time hogs, as pickers must walk a further distance between each pick. These slow to medium movers are usually good candidates for carousels, as the carou-sel eliminates walking and searching for the item. Now let’s say the same item is requested multiple times throughout the day. In manual picking, the picker must return to the same location multiple times for the same part. In a carousel batch picking environment, the item presents itself once, and allocates to each order requiring the item. To determine actual gains – fi gure out the time it takes to pick your slow to medium items and compare against 200-400 carousel transactions per hour. Contact your local AS/R Sys-tems Dealer or AS/R Systems directly to help with your evaluation.

It’s what’s inside that counts.

Do Carousels save space?

Yes. Because there’s no need for opera-tor aisles, and available building height utilized - your picking areas will be consolidated. Contact your local AS/R Dealer or AS/R Systems directly to quan-tify exactly how much fl oor space will be saved.

Can I scan products at the carousel?

Of course. Also, since the operator is al-ways at their own controlled workstation, there’s no need to introduce an RF scan-ner. Scanning can be performed with a simple, $100 keyboard wedge scanner attached to the PC via cable or wireless.

What is Carousel Pick-to-Light?

Pick-to-light displays guide the operator to the correct location by pointing to the desired SKU and displaying the request-ed item quantity. If multiple orders re-quire the same product, the item quantity is summed & spread across the orders via pick-to-light (and mirrored on the operator PC screen). For example, if 10 orders all require 5 units of SKU “ABC”, the display will point and illuminate “50” (quantity to pick) at the location contain-ing “ABC”. The 10 pick-to-light displays pointing to each order box will illuminate quantity “5” above the order. The opera-tor grabs 50 units from the carousel, and places 5 units in each of the 10 orders.

How do Carousels improve picking accuracy?

Carousels improve accuracy by illuminat-ing the location and quantity of the item to pick, and by double-checking the cor-rect item selecting through scanning its barcode (it applicable). Customers may also scan the order when placing the item into the order box for a triple-check.

How do I put items away into the system?

Putaway is the reverse of batch-picking. The operator scans multiple items into a putaway batch, and the carousels pre-position automatically to the correct location for putaway.

How many orders can I pick in a single batch?

As many as you’d like, and limited only by the number of orders you can physi-cally fi t into the operator station. Typi-cal setups pick 8-16 orders per batch; however some customers pick 100’s of orders in a single batch.

What if my warehouse has other picking areas?

Not a problem. Operators simply partially fi ll orders from the carousel and pass them onto the off-carousel operator for top-up. Another scenario is to pass carousel and off-carousel items to a separate area for consolidation.

I have 30’ tall ceilings in my building. Can Carousels be stacked on top of each other?

Of course. Horizontal carousels can sit on top of each other to maximize available building height. A platform is introduced at the front end of the system for the operator. Lifting or conveying de-vices can be introduced to move product between levels.

What happens if the Carousels break down?

Although carousel downtime is rare, AS/R recommends following a quarterly PM schedule to discover minor issues before they become problems. If issues do arise, operators can spin the equip-ment via footswitch instead of by PC for a short term solution before an AS/R technician solves the problem over the phone or onsite. Keep in mind that carousels spaced accordingly can also be 100% accessed just like normal pick shelving during downtime.

Are You Treating Your Customers Like Dogs?By Mike Marchev

Having recently been introduced to a shameful statistic, I thought it timely to give you my opinion on

this subject. See if you can swallow this dose of reality: When interviewed, travel agents believe they retain 78% of their paying customers. When interviewed, paying customers believe this number is closer to 35%.

Let’s not quibble of a percentage point or two. The message is that travel profes-sionals believe their retention rate is a lot higher than it is. Agents are losing cus-tomers at an alarming rate … and finding it more difficult to recapture market share.

In the interest of time, I will provide my se-cret remedy to this unnecessary dilemma. Here goes. Get ready for a “glaring-flash-of the-obvious.” Drum roll please: TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE DOGS.

Pet owners know exactly what I am talk-ing about. Those of you who have been in the company of “pet owners” know what I am talking about. The rest of you may be thinking I have gone off my rocker, and I have no plans to convert you today. As for the pet people, I need say no more.

You get the picture and are endorsing my position as I wrap up this article.

As for the difference between “custom-ers” and “clients,” a prospect becomes a customer when they buy something. Anybody can sell anything to anybody “once.” The first purchase is “nice.” The second purchase is “meaningful.” But it isn’t until the third purchase that a cus-tomer becomes a “client.”

When you come upon a new prospect, think about treating them like a dog, and then, focus on ways you can develop a relationship that will result in three trans-actions.

That’s my opinion. I’m just saying …

Dual Loading Dock Position Requires Solution for Complete Range of Truck and Trailer Sizes

A nationally recognized company was planning a new entertain-ment facility in the Midwest, and

after comparing product lines, contacted Pentalift’s local dealer to assist with the design of a safe and efficient loading dock.

The customer’s requirements included accommodating a wide variety of trucks and trailers from courier to over-the-road models via two dock positions. In order to fulfill this request it was determined that a dock lift alongside an edge of dock leveler would satisfy all of their needs. Dock seals were also suggested for both openings; offering the customer a tighter seal between the trailer and the loading dock area.

The model HED pit mounted dock lift (pictured to the right in the photo) with a 10,000lb lifting capacity and a 7’ x 8’ platform was chosen to meet the flexibil-ity of loading and unloading the various trailer sizes at the facility. Longer than

standard bridge plates built from alumi-num were custom designed for the unit, making it easier and safer for the dock attendants to operate. The dock lift was installed inside the building, just behind the foundation wall, allowing for aesthet-ics and energy savings; as the overhead door offers a complete seal when closed.

The 20,000lb capacity Edge of Dock leveler (pictured left in the photo) was in-stalled specifically to service convention-al trailers. The PS100 Fixed Head Pad dock seals were included to close-off the space between the trailer and door openings, providing protection against energy loss while the dock positions are in use. In addition, the dock seals were chosen to help prevent rain and snow from causing unsafe working conditions and damaging product during the loading process. The dock seal projections were also customized to 27” around the Edge of Dock, and 16” around the dock lift.

The customer was so pleased with the performance of their loading dock posi-tions that they ordered an identical set for another part of their facility.

Health Assessments

Having an annual checkup is important to your overall health. We all know this, and most of us

went regularly to the doctor as children. As adults we got out of this practice. It’s an easy responsibility to skip when our lives are filled with work, family and other obligations. Especially if we feel well, we see no reason to go.

However, without a clear, updated picture of your health, you cannot accurately determine your health status. You may think you know, but it’s a guess. A CEO just doesn’t guess that the company is doing well; there’s an in-depth look at its numbers to make sure it’s healthy and to keep it strong.

In the same way, you need an accurate look at your numbers. This knowledge will provide you control of your health and your future. It’s also a clear way to help control healthcare-related costs. For example, it is less costly to cover medicines that control blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes, than it is to pay for the doctor bills and hospital costs re-lating to those avoidable complications.

TVH recognizes the importance of an an-nual screenings. In partnership with their insurance carrier, TVH offers its employ-ees a yearly screening. The Olathe and Grayslake facilities have a screening on-site while the other facilities are encour-aged to see their doctor. The screenings measure BMI, blood pressure, choles-terol, glucose and other health risks such as smoking and stress.

Debby Baughman-Galewski, 8-year employee, discovered she had a serious health problem after attending the on-site health assessment. “I was attending the fair and after they took my blood pres-sure, red flags went up,” Debby says. “My blood pressure was so high, that I was not allowed to return to work until I had a doctor’s clearance.”

She went to her doctor as directed by the Health assessment nurses and found out that her carotid artery was 90% block on the left side, the heart side, and 80% on the right. She needed surgery because her chance of a stroke was high due to the blockage. After her surgery, she adopted a healthier lifestyle which included quitting smoking immediately.

Debby is thin, takes walks and by looking at her you would never know she was unhealthy. She thought the same about herself. “I’m not overweight, I’m pretty active and felt fine, so I never suspected anything.

“That’s why I’m so grateful I attended the health assessment. I had no idea I was at such a high risk for a stroke and in need urgent medical attention,” she continues.

“This assessment is so important and should be done by everyone so they can attend to any issues before they become large problems.

“I can’t emphasize enough how impor-tant it is to learn about your health, even if you think you’re fine,”

If your employer offers such a screening, take advantage of the convenience and sign up. Even if your employer does not offer an annual checkup, you can still get one with your personal doctor at no out-of-pocket costs to you as part of the Affordable Care Act. It doesn’t take long and the information gained can literally save your life.

New industrial strength lubricant offers benchmark in lubricious sprays!

Andrew Barkin is a Camarillo, CA engineer and inventor who studies tribology – the science of lubrication. Several years ago he became dissatis-fied with the products that were available on the market and mixed a high-quality petroleum base with a hand-selected mixture of the finest additives, includ-ing PTFE (commonly known by the trademarked- name Teflon). PTFE is one of the most lubricious materials known. The result is a new multi-purpose maintenance product called Andy’s Super Oil – a totally improved spray lubricant that outperforms the products available in the marketplace today.

Popular vacuum lifter now lifts pails from side safely, easily

WEPCO, Inc. announces the new SmartLifter™ for Pails automated vacuum lifter. The tool that revolution-ized carton lifting is now available to grip, balance, and stack heavy pails from the side with fingertip pressure. Palletizing or de-palletizing 5-gallon pails that can weigh up to 50 lbs. has always been a back breaker. Traditional vacuum lifters that grip from the top can’t be used because of the danger of pulling the top off, causing a mess, work stoppage, and possibly a hazard or injury. WEPCO’s new SmartLifter for Pails (Patent Pending) solves this problem by safely gripping pails from the side and lifting them with the touch of a finger.
