This Month from the Pres….. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK – SEPTEMBER 2012 Dunno wot 2 write!! Short effort this month . . . it’s been a busy few weeks since our last meeting, with the Perpetual Trophy, Skeelsy’s movie night, a tour of WA Newspapers, our ARB open day and sausage sizzle, and lastly the power line track clean-up. Starting with the Perp Trophy . . . great attendance (and good time NOT had by all) beautiful weather and a huge campfire. Onto Skeelsy’s movie night . . . no red carpet, and we are still to sight Skeelsy’s new shirt and stubbies . . . but once again well attended, great location, great movie, great company and huge campfire! Who had to be recovered from a creek crossing gone wrong, just getting there??? Stay tuned . . . ! WAN tour was terrific, a solid 4.5 hours of a very informative and information packed trek right through the “West” (we even saw “Alston” – cartoon man). The ARB open day was well attended and we promoted ourselves well! Rick cooked and the ladies sold many snags in buns (172 to be exact), gave out some flyers and raised many dollars for the RFDS – the weather was 4 seasons in 1 day! Blustery, Freezing, Sunny & Rainy! And sometimes it was all 4 at once! The powerline cleanup via the 4WD Association saw four vehicles from Peel help out. It all went well, we had a great time, lots and lots and lots of stuff was cleaned up and the 4WD Association think we are great . . . oh yes and Spring was on our side with a beautiful clear sunny day to help us see all the empties glistening in the sun. A huge thank you to our trip leaders for the previous events – without them none of it would have happened. An equally huge thank you to all who attended as without you the trip leaders would have been very lonely!! Last bit . . . my age-old, repeated whinge . . . if you put your name on a trip sheet, don’t forget to actually TURN UP!!! If you can’t turn up, please call the trip leader

Cheers

Rothy.

that I can meet up at an agreed location.

I have attached a map for an alternative way from Corrigin to the restaurant which is about 17

kilometres north of Hyden. To get there turn left onto the Bendering road shortly after

leaving Corrigin the turn left onto the Kondinin Narembeen road then right onto Billercay

road. Follow this to the Hyden Mount Walker Rd and turn right. The restaurant is on the left.

You can't miss it there are large brick walls at the driveway.

Trip Reports

Rothy’s Perpetual Navigational Trophy We received our pack and we were on our way (well after a small lesson how to read the map we were), but of course the Waroona bakery was calling so we had a quick call in and then we were finally on our way. We found the first turn off so we were pretty confident, until we drove past the first track three times and then realised we weren’t on the right track (my fantastic navi only decided this half way down the track, we took a lot of scenic routes, there’s some great trees out there). We finally found the correct track and we were getting the hang of this whole GPS navigation thing. We found all of the marker points and we were even navigating using the sun to find N & S till after we had finished Chelsea realised our GPS had a compass (Can we give fines to visitors?). All we had left was the sheets so while Chelsea, who is a sponge for useless information, completed them while we had lunch we headed back to the campsite. All in all it was a fantastic day thanks Rothy and Rick can’t wait for next year :) Kim, Chelsea and Kyeisha Mum and I started out in full confidence; hey we’ve done it every year before so how hard could it be??? We stopped at The Pinjarra Bakery in Waroona for some breaky and plotted our map with the first set of co-ordinates then off we went. We came across the Berry’s on Willowdale Rd and we both stopped and deflated our tyres then headed off to find out first grid reference. Along the way we received an SOS from MILLIE saying that they were lost and were somewhere on Gnanga Road, we soon set them straight and they found us along with a few others trying to work out where this first location should be. To no avail, it completely eluded us! So we formed an alliance with MILLIE and off we went to find the 2nd and 3rd waypoints, which we did and found the next set of co-ordinates but we just had to find the 1st one, it wasn’t going to beat us….well that was the best part of the day taken up trying to find the bloody thing, so with much frustration we decided to head back to camp feeling rather deflated ourselves. Rothy & Rick had defeated us….and so too did our navigational skills! All in all though it was a fantastic day (lovely weather for driving in the bush and fits of laughter!) I even got to put some of my new skills I learnt on the ladies training day to good use. Thanks Rothy & Rick for organising another great day as I know personally how much hard work they put into it even risking life & limb on one of the reccy runs just missing one of the worst storms we’ve had this year which was evident from how badly damaged the bush was on the actual day. Cheers Alex Bronze & Janine (Mum)

Welcome to the 2012 Perpetual Trophy you’ve got a nice sunny day go for it. Lost my first compulsory stop, the Waroona Bakery for breakfast, should have taken the hint at that time and followed Rothy and Rick. Did find it after getting told where to go “politely” of course First marker, um LOST, what to do, give up go home? Thoughts of Rescue, SOS, Emergency call, na thankfully before there was blood spilt and a divorce Mark & Nicola stumbled upon us so Kathy and I decided to have an escorted scenic tour around the forest. Thanks guys. Sorry head was elsewhere. Dave & Rick you guys made for a great day and night. It was good fun and a nice weekend out. Thanks for the effort put in. It was appreciated. Rob & Kathy The trip we had all been waiting for, Rothy’s navigation weekend (I think it was on the 25th August). After the customary trip to the bakery and getting the world’s slowest prepared wrap for lunch, Ian and I arrived in the mighty Jeep ready to tackle whatever Rothy had lined up for us. This year presented itself in a slightly different format, we had no idea what we were looking for and the course was completed without the aid of a fancy camera, a gps or google. We had an incredibly accurate and artistic pen and possibly a slightly less accurate pair of brains. After having a tree felled right in front of us by some locals with a combined IQ somewhat slightly less than the number of teeth that they shared we spent almost an hour searching for the first point, not the greatest of starts but managed to meet a few others trying the same, eventually agreeing on the point in question. Mother nature had not been kind to Dave’s course having blown many trees over and making a few challenges for us and for Dave having to make some last minute alterations. We managed to see many highlights along the way from dead caravan carcasses to a scarecrow dressed in blue overalls pointing the way for us (an image captured by that incredibly artistic pen that we had). At the end of the day nobody hurt themselves (maybe Rick’s fingers on the bbq plate, dohhh!), nobody broke their car (at least not badly?), everybody made it to the finish point (well maybe some needed a little guidance, hehe). This year was a lot more taxing on the grey matter for the navigation but the choice of questions I felt were excellent and lightened the stress of the day. We all managed to find the camp site at the end of the day and in true Peel 4x4 style a great night of socialising around the camp fire late into the evening/morning topped off another great weekend, finishing off with the ever popular bacon and eggs for breakfast with a refreshing amber ale to wash it all down. I appreciate the effort that Dave and his trusty sidekick Rick put into making the weekend what it was and a recognition of thanks is duly noted, Thank You Dave. Rob Baxter

From the Trip Leader’s Perspective . . . After five rainy days, the Perpetual Trophy Saturday gave us a warm sunny day, but let’s face it, even if it was raining, some people would still have got lost!! A record attendance of eleven vehicles. . . .Bronzey and myself had a bet on the time that the first car would get to campsite – I lost!! There was a winner and a non-winner (last) and all others in between, some smart answers to stupid questions, and lots of rubbish cleaned from forest tracks. Our campfire was huge as usual and judging by the amount of empties the next morning, we had a good time!! We were considering making this a bi-annual event, but there seems to be enough interest to run it again in 2013 - and the Hardy’s say they are entering THREE cars!! (We also had a great time putting it together, finding blaze trees and tracks, and just exploring) We have some good ideas and will probably revert to all blaze trees (as in 2011) and try to keep it slightly simpler with a later start time, but starting in the Forest adjacent to our area. We can probably get one more year from that area before we “wear it out” so to speak. Thanks to all who came along and hope to see you all again in 2013. Cheers Rothy

A NIGHT OF FILM AND ADVENTURE

Saturday September 8 and all was good as people arrived from far and wide for

the chance to view a film of epic proportions.

Northern Safari by Keith Adams – a 1955 film depicting Keith and his wife

and sister spending time in the Gulf of Carpentaria. There was some editing

done which showed an EH Holden and a wombat and platypus so maybe not all

was strictly 1955.

The day was warm and sunny and promised a warm and clear and starry

night……………..clear and starry it was but also icy and snow and permafrost

and thank goodness for pyromaniacs. A campfire of magnificent size and heat

kept us nice and toasty.

The viewing was inside the CWA Hall at Pumphrey Bridge which is not far

from Wandering and Popanyinning. A nice little hall that provided a warm

place to view the film and make comments that at times were funny and witty.

The camping was sort of next to and over the road from the hall. Plenty of

room and nice and flat – all in all a good camp site.

So apart from that did anything else of note happen? Not really, unless we

include that a vehicle recovery was required on the trip down (no names

mentioned) and plates and cups needed from the CWA Hall as the packing was

not quite complete (again no names mentioned) but other than that just a very

nice and simple weekend – made even better by the absolute belting that took

place at Subi Oval later on the Sunday arvo……………..they were just so good.

Film aficionados:- Peter, Dave, Graham (and kids), Rena and Rob, Donna and

Ian. Visitors Mara (TLCC) and Kim.

West Australian Newspaper visit 12/9/12

Despite all of us rolling up to the wrong building we all arrived on time. Brian & Steph

Atkinson, Dave Rothwell, Rob Berry, Jon Waller and Dad and I met with our tour guide

Anthony outside Newspaper House. We had a look around the editorial department first then

had a short presentation of the huge list of products they produce and briefly how the printing

process works. We were then shown the radio stations and the TV broadcast room where

Steph sat in front of the camera ready to go live.

The next part of the tour took us to the paper store & wandered through the forest. All the

reels of paper are stacked end on end & stood 6 – 8 metres tall. We were told there was some

unbelievable amount of thousands of reels of paper in front of us, very impressive even to a

seasoned newspaper man like myself.

We then passed by a room where some of the advertising pamphlets such as Coles were being

stacked & I spied a familiar face but was too far away to speak, then past a few big holes in

the floor where the old press lines had been removed and on to the reel stand area. It is here

that the reels of paper are brought to the press by driverless self-guided forklifts. While we

were there a reel of paper was finished & about to have a reel change happen at full

production speed when the paper web broke & we were treated to paper going everywhere.

Going upstairs to the press hall we saw the larger of the press lines first. This was made up of

3 presses in a line stretching about 120 metres long & 4 stories tall with Thursday’s West

Australian being printed while we watched. After talking to one of the printers I used to work

with a few years ago we continued to the smaller press which prints all the glossy magazines

then finally found our way back in the editorial department at the end of the tour. Those 3

hours certainly went quick.

Cheers

PEEL TRAILS GROUP - Future direction 2012-2017

Peel Region provides a diversity and richness in natural, cultural and historical features all of which combine to create opportunities for quality walking, cycling, bridle and water based trails experiences. The Peel Trails Group was incorporated in 1998 with the aim of establishing the Peel Region as the benchmark for sustainable trail development and use. The Group has been instrumental in the development of six Trails Master Plans for the Peel Region - the Peel Trails Master Plan together with five local trails master plans covering the local government areas of Serpentine/Jarrahdale, Murray, Boddington, Waroona and Mandurah. The Master Plans incorporate strategies for trails development, maintenance and promotion. Group membership consists of representatives from the 5 local government authorities, state government (health, sport & recreation, environment & land management), trail user groups, community and business members. Peel Trails Group recently held a community forum to gain community involvement and input into the role and direction of the Group over the next 5 years. The resulting key focus areas for the Group between 2012-2017 are summarised as follows: 1. Advocacy - undertake advocacy role for implementation of the Trails Master Plans; 2. Promotion/Marketing - increase promotion & awareness of the existing trails in Peel through upgrade and management of PTG website and use of use other technology and marketing tools; 3. UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT –STEVE ‘POP’ HUREDINE

Born on 02/04/1944 Steve ‘Pop’ Huredine came into the world at Kellerberrin

District Hospital and is the oldest of 4 children.

I went to primary school and high school in Kellerberrin until Yr8 as I left

school at the age of 14 to work and do a pre apprenticeship with the local

butchers Tillers Butchers.

It wasn’t for me … only lasted 3mths with many knife wounds!!

So after this I went working as a TA for George Cole Engineering for 6-12

months then moved to Merriden with my Dad and went working for a local

farmer as a farm hand which I stayed in for a few years.

After this I moved to Perth to live with my mother and got a job for family

bakeries (Now known as Tip Top) as a delivery driver.

This is when I met and fell in love with the office girl, “Best thing since sliced

bread” . We soon got married and had 3 daughters, Patricia, Julie and Colleen.

We resided in Kalamunda for many years. We have been married now for 46

years and hopefully many more to come. We also have 6 grandchildren.

Over my life I have had many vehicles, the first one was a Cyclops “Pedal Car”

then:-

Whippit Convertible

Ford V8 Merc

Austin A40

We’ve had many others but there are too many to mention.

I’ve raced Hot Rods – “FC Holden 415” and won 13 titles having raced at

Claremont, Forrestfield, Moora, Northam, and Collie & Bunbury.

Forrestfield was home base of the WA Hot Rod Association.

We owned a business for many years subcontracting to Cooper Sands Supplies.

Then sold up and went into Partnership with a mate – Kalapave Bitumen

Paving.

Sold that business and moved to Karratha, we went for 3mths and were still

there 7 years later driving road trains etc.

The Grandies started arriving and Margaret wanted to return to Perth. It was

then that we decided to join our daughter Julie and her husband Steven in the

forming of the Peel 4x4 Club with Peter & Jenny Dawes, Jones & Lanes.

We are still members today and heave had some good times and friendships

formed and have enjoyed many positions on the committee.

We have just returned from a holiday of a lifetime around Europe! Still happily

4x4ing.

Cheers

Pop!

Thanks ‘Pop’ for going under the spotlight …..Ed

Can I please have some more contributions for the next 6 months magazines. It doesn’t have

to be war and peace it’s just a good way to get to know our fellow members! Please email
