“There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of the work. This is where the respect and the love and the devotion come in - that we do it to God, to Christ, and that's why we try to do it as beautifully as possible,” Mother Teresa. Always be mindful to keep Christ at the forefront of all that we do. It is in keeping Him first that our work is blessed.

May Jesus and Our Blessed Mother continue to bless you and all the members of your courts. For in Him we live and move and have our being.”

TO: STATE REGENTS AND LOCAL COURT REGENTS

FROM: Letty Calvetti, National Education Contest Chairman

SUBECT: 2010 NATIONAL EDUCATION CONTEST

THEMES: “THE JOYS OF GOD SURROUND US”“THE JOYS LIFE BRINGS THROUGH OTHERS”

Each local court should make a very special effort to sponsor the EDUCATION CONTEST. The themes selected for the contest encourage lively imagination and freedom of thought when student talent and application go hand in hand. The contest enables students of our communities, schools and CCD classes to compete and strive for awards while following certain fixed rules. The choice of the categories is:

ART ESSAY POETRY COMPUTER ART MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY

The local court determines the amount of awards to be presented to the first three winning entries in each division, within each category. Plan a special event and invite parents, teachers and principals. Take a picture of the presentation, write an article and send to your diocesan paper. Ask a representative from your local paper to be present for the awards ceremony. Bring a few membership applications and invite new members into your court.

● All entries in all categories are to reflect the chosen theme. There may be an excellent Art entry, but if it does not identify with the theme, it will not be a winner.

• All entries are to be the original imagination of the participant. He/she should not look at a picture, statue, building, etc. and draw from what he/she sees. A participant needs to create an original idea for the entry.

• All rules apply to Local, State and National entries.

• The Local Court’s name, number, city, and state, as well as the Local Court Education Chairperson’s name and address should be on both the individual contest information sheet (art, essay, poetry, computer art, music, and photography) and on the “Participant’s Cover Sheet” (white sheet attached) before contest information is distributed.

• All Local Courts under the jurisdiction of a State Court send first place winners to the State Education Chairperson, using the “State Court Education Contest Cover Sheet” (yellow sheet attached). Ask your local court regent for the name of the State Education chairperson and insert that person’s name on the bottom of the yellow sheet. Only one first place winner per division, per category. Please do not send a first place winner in each theme as both will have to be disqualified. LOCAL COURTS: DO NOT SEND DIRECTLY TO NATIONAL EDUCATION CHAIRPERSON, AS ENTRIES WILL NOT BE RETURNED. If you have a State Regent, you have a State Court and a State Education chairperson, to whom the entries must be sent.

• Local Courts not under the jurisdiction of a State Court: Send only first place winners to the National Education Chairperson.

• State Chairperson: Type handwritten first place Poetry and Essay Contest entries before sending to National. Glue or tape “Participant’s Cover Sheet” (see attached) to back of typed copy then staple original entry to typed copy. DO NOT use paper clips.

• State Courts and Local Courts not under the jurisdiction of State Court: Send first place winners only to National Education Chairperson, using the “National Education Contest Cover Sheet” (pink sheet attached). Only one first place winner per division, per category.

• Be sure all winning entries meet contest rules.

To: State and Local Court Regents

From: Duchess Collins, National Newsletter Chairman

Re: 2010 National Newsletter Contest

Congratulations to all the 2009 Newsletter Contest winners. Thank you to everyone for your beautiful newsletters, you did a great job and we look forward to your continued participation in 2010.

The 2009 Newsletter Contest is over, but it’s not too early to begin planning for the 2010 contest. What an exciting project for both local and state courts.

The court newsletter is just one way to communicate to the members of your court current activities, upcoming events and special projects the court may be planning. The newsletter is of special interest to those members that are unable to attend meetings due to illness, being homebound or because of family responsibilities.

In addition to local court news, the newsletter is also a way to relay CDA information from the national and state levels. The court newsletter also serves as a means to follow up on special events in your church and community and can very easily be a recruiting tool.

Please remember that your newsletters are judged specifically on their content, not whether they are printed in black and white or color or how many pages it contains. What is important is the coverage of your local, state and national CDA news, and the interests of your court and community.

In addition to this letter, you have received the 2010 Newsletter Contest Guidelines along with some suggestions for content and the Local Court Cover Sheet. If you are not the newsletter editor, it is very important that you send her a copy of this packet before she begins getting the newsletters ready for the 2010 contest.

As the National Chairman I encourage all local and state courts to publish a newsletter and participate in the 2010 contest. We need everyone to be involved to support our local and national programs and contests. We had wonderful participation this year, let’s see if we can double the entries next year, giving us all an opportunity to learn more about the amazing things our CDA sisters are doing around the states. We have a wonderful story to tell…do your part in writing it.

State and local Regents are encouraged to maximize this valuable communication tool.

2010 National Newsletter Contest

Duchess Collins, National Chairman

Suggestions to help the newsletter editor arrange a newsletter with content that is newsworthy and appealing and to prepare for the National Newsletter Contest.

Your newsletter is a great vehicle to recruit new members, a communication tool and a record of your court’s history.

It is very important that the Regent give the Newsletter Contest Guidelines to the court newsletter editor before she begins getting the newsletters ready for the local contest. Follow the guidelines carefully and be ready to answer any questions she may have.

All newsletters are required to include:

1. The Mission Statement along with any of the registered CDA logo’s.

2. These two items identify CDA as a national organization. Being a National organization, the logo of the Order should be on every piece of publication.

3. The name, address and phone numbers for the Regent and Editor.

4. Court name, number and location of the court.

5. Many newsletters may have the name of the court and court number, but the city and state was omitted.

What exactly should the newsletter contain? Most importantly it needs Contact Information

• Include the name, address and phone numbers of the Court Chaplain, District Deputy and all court officers.

• Ask your Court Chaplain & District Deputy to write an article each month for the newsletter.

• National & State News: Divide up the news you receive from the national quarterly packets into two or three newsletters. There is plenty of information to work with.

• You are connected to a national organization and members need to know how and where they can find current information of national activities. More information is on the national website address; www.catholicdaughters.org.

• Court activities: Put them in short articles with the byline (name) of the person that wrote the article under the headline.

• Short articles are more likely to be read than longer ones.

• Acknowledgement of members for thank you’s, sympathy, etc. makes a newsletter more personal. It also gives information to members that do not or cannot attend meetings.

• You are writing the news happenings of your court, so regarding photos, consider limiting your photos. One or two per event is sufficient.

Page 30: September 2009 Quarterly Newsletter - Catholic Daughters of the

• Number the pages beginning with page two (2). It is not necessary to number the first page but page order can get mixed up without page numbers.

• Be sure to use excess “white space” with a related graphic, prayer, poem, recipe, announcements, etc.

• Be creative and have fun. We all enjoy our Courts newsletter..

Contact Information Omitted from Newsletters

• A newsletter may have the name of the court and that’s all. No identification of where it is coming from?

• It may only have the Regent’s name at the bottom of her article, but there is no address or phone number to contact her or anyone else.

• The court members know the Regents contact information but a new and interested person does not.

• 70% of newsletters do not have the officers or their Chaplain’s information published.

o If they do, it is only their names; some have their address, but no phone numbers or emails.

• It may have the editor’s name, street address, but no city or phone number or email.

Contact information is very important.

Catholic Daughters are not the only ones that read our newsletters.

Many courts place their newsletters in the lobby or offices of their parish AND

At this point the newsletter becomes a great recruiting tool.

BUT ……. without some contact information we may have just lost a new member.

So, check your newsletters, and make sure you have the necessary contact information in it.

Thanks again to those who participated in this years contest, I hope we see yours and many more in 2010.

MISSION STATEMENT

Catholic Daughters of the Americas strives to embrace the principle of faithWorking through love in the promotion of justice, equality and the

Advancement of human rights and human dignity for all.

NATIONAL MEMBERSHIPBy Helen Arndorfer, National Membership Chairman

Every Catholic Daughter member should assist their court with membership goals by “sharing our story”. To encourage your participation the National CDA has a contest for every local court, state court, and territorial court to increase their membership by 5% or more. This contest is based on the membership of April 2008, and closes in April 2010. The courts reaching this goal will be honored at the next National Convention, in Buffalo, NY, in July 2010. The local court, state court, and territorial court with the highest per cent increase in membership will receive a prize (check flyer).

CDA must increase membership so that we can carry out our mission. We must retain our current members, and keep ALL MEMBERS, both current and new, involved in our programs and activities.

As National Membership Chairman I am providing materials to assist you. Enclosed is the “God’s Active Angels” flyer to post in your parish. At the National workshop, in Belleville, IL, “God’s Active Angels” skit was presented. Please use this skit for a program at your court meeting this fall. Guest night would be an excellent time for the skit. If you haven’t received a copy from your State Regent please request a copy by e-mailing me, Helen Arndorfer, [email protected], and I will e-mail it to you.

Remember that until we have every Catholic Woman a Catholic Daughter our work is not done.

We are each of us angels with only one wing,And we can only fly by embracing one another.
