Dear Msgr. Luca and Sisters,

Autumn is upon us along with our planning for our Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays and the preparation of much cooler weather!

We celebrated our CDA Sunday on October 18th at our 11:15 AM Mass. We were blessed to see so many of our sisters along with their families sitting in unity during the celebration of our Mass.

This year we brainstormed on how we would celebrate CDA Make a Difference Day (October 24) and we came up with feeding 60 families via Grassroots! So many of our sisters volunteered their time and donated food to feed so many in need. All of the food was delivered to St. Louis on Wednesday, October21st and transported to Grassroots that afternoon. I am so grateful to all the woman who stepped forward to plan and execute this wonderful effort!

As we head into our year, we will be hosting our first speaker at our general meeting on November 18th, from Gilchrist Hospice Care. Our guest speaker will begin between 8:00 PM and 8:15PM, after our general meeting in adjourn. We are opening the meeting to our spouses and children if you wish to bring them to hear our speaker!

We will be reintroducing monthly “Dining with the Daughters” at various restaurants. If you have an idea about a restaurant we could call, please see Debbie Mangus. MORE TO COME!

Our Court will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary in October of 2016! Our first meeting was held on Tuesday, October 27th beginning at 6:15 PM in room 306. If you are interested or have ideas about our celebration next autumn, please submit them to Mary Lea via email @ [email protected]

We are bringing back the baskets to fill for Thanksgiving and Christmas for our needy families! The baskets will be at the October meeting, so please bring a non-perishable item to donate! We will still be collecting $ for gift cards stating in October too.

Debbie Lattus, our State Regent of Maryland is encouraging all CDA courts to donate canned goods and our casseroles to the less fortunate. Therefore, please bring a canned good to all CDA general meetings from October to February 2016. We will tally the number of canned goods. If you already bring canned goods to St. Louis for the Food Bank, please fill out the form at the back table as to how many you donate on a regular basis and we will add this to our tally. Please see Sally R for more information.

Our Charity Committee is meeting this month, just prior to our general meeting, so please see Lucie G if you have any ideas of donating to 501-3C organizations. Lucie will have some forms at next week’s meeting. If you are not able to attend the meeting, please reach out to Lucie via email.

Our Spirituality Chair, Daria McGehee is coordinating a day retreat which will be held on Saturday, November 14th and Deacon Fred is leading us in the retreat! Please see Daria or view the emails sent out from her or myself about information regarding the retreat! A weekend retreat will take place in the spring at Priestfield, WV. More information will come regarding this weekend/day retreat option.

Debbie Mangus is chairing the next fundraiser, Girls Night Out in February of 2016. She will be holding the first meeting on Saturday, October 24th at 9 AM in room 306. Last year’s Girls Night Out

was a HUGE success and so many of us had a great time! In order for this to happen again, Debbie needs your help! Thank you so much Debbie for stepping into this role!!!!

All correspondences will be sent via email along with the Treasurer Report and Monthly Minutes on the Monday prior to the general meeting. By doing so, we are able to save time in our meeting and have the opportunity to plan for a game / craft / prayer time after the general meeting! Please consider staying for fellowship with your sisters.

Circle of Love Reports for Spoke Leaders and Chairpersons of Events: Within 10 days of an event, please write a 1 or 2 paragraph describing the event you were a chairperson and submit the write up plus photo to Maria Hoffman.

May you continue to be blessed each and every day and keep the board in touch if you need any prayer requests sent out to our wonderful court!

God Bless, Mary Lea

Chaplin’s Message Msgr. Joseph Luca

In 1962 Clare Boothe Luce, the first American woman appointed to a major ambassadorial post abroad and a devout Catholic, offered some advice to President John F. Kennedy. “A great man,” she told to him, “is a sentence.” Abraham Lincoln’s sentence was: “He preserved the union and freed the slaves.” Franklin Roosevelt’s sentence was: “He lifted us out of the Great Depression and helped us win a world war.” Luce feared that Kennedy’s attention was so splintered among different priorities that his “sentence” risked becoming a “muddled paragraph.”

As you contemplate your purpose for being, your plan for life, begin with the big question: What is your sentence?

A former pro football player named Bubba Smith came face to face with his sentence many years ago. After a very successful career in professional football, he was recruited to appear in a series of commercials for Miller Lite beer. But Smith walked away from the job because he didn’t like the effect drinking had on people and he realize that he was contributing to a significant social problem. In a magazine article about his life, he said that neither beer nor any other alcoholic beverage had ever been part of his life. He advertised Miller Lite beer because it was an easy job and it paid a good salary. Until one day he went back to his college alma mater as the Grand Marshal of their Homecoming parade. As he was riding in a limousine, he heard throngs of people on both sides of the parade route shouting “Tastes great” and “Less filling” which were slogans Miller Lite used to promote their products. Smith suddenly realized that he and the beer commercials had a tremendous impact on the students at Michigan State.

Later during Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale, he saw drunken college kids up and down the beach shouting “Tastes great! Less Filling.” So when it came time for his contract to be renewed, he refused to sign because he did not want his life to be identified with beer. He did not want his sentence to be: “Tastes Great! Less filling!” So he walked away from a multi-million dollar contract.

What sentence will one day summarize your life? “She was a great mother.” “She kept a spotless home.” “She wore the cutest outfits.”

How about if that sentence was: “She was a genuine disciple of Jesus Christ.”

Catholic Daughter SundayOctober 18, 2015

Debbie Mangus

On Sunday, October 18, many Catholic Daughter sisters met at the St. Louis Church to worship together at the 11:15 Mass. Fr. Pete had a wonderful Mass and even mentioned us during his homily. The Board offered the Gifts at the Offertory and several sisters were Ministers of the Eucharist.

After Mass, sisters Theresa Enright and Peg Whyte were at the information table to provide information to any lady who wished to learn about CDA.

Third Order of St. Frances Communion BreakfastBy Kathleen Frampton

Spiritual CoChair

Court St. Louis was proud to feature Lisa Gough OSF, a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order, as the keynote speaker for our Communion Breakfast following the 8:00am Holy Mass on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Ms. Goff has been a member of the Little Flower Fraternity Secular Franciscan Order in Baltimore since 2011 - a fraternity connected to the St. Margaret of Cortona Region comprising Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. She currently serves on the Council for Little Flower where she assists in the formation of new candidates to the order. Father Pete Literal, Mass celebrant and Father Nicodemas, priest in residence at St. Louis, were honored guests at the event.

Ms. Gough was chosen to speak in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct 4 th) and provided the audience with a very informative and lively discussion of the life of this notable saint and how his Ministry has engaged Catholics for centuries. She discussed critical aspects of Franciscan Spirituality – particularly the need to separate oneself from the trappings of earthly materialism – in order to be open to God’s Will and serve those most in need. Her discussion of St. Francis’s life, and examples of the Franciscan Third Order’s Mission Service, are still relevant today and certainly resonate with the message of Pope Francis and his call to minister to disenfranchised people on the fringes of society. Ms. Goff invited everyone in the audience to take an opportunity to open our hearts and minds to living the Gospel life in the spirit of St. Francis. She concluded her presentation with the Franciscan salutation “Pax et bonum”!

Court St. Louis acknowledges the efforts of the Spirituality Committee who planned and hosted this wonderful event: Daria McGehee (Chair) Kathleen Frampton (Co-Chair), Carol Dunn, Mary Lea Bain, Caryl Gazmen, Phyllis Hipp, Cathy Stefano, Beth Draminski, Sally Regnier, Joan Farabaugh, Barbara Beach, JoAnn Bielski.

November General Meeting

We will have a guest speaker, Shel Kelly, to talk to us about Gilchrest Hospice Care and what they do. She will speak with us at 7:30, followed by our regular business meeting. Please invite your

family members to this worthwhile, informative talk.

For the good of our Court

Mass Cards

Do you use Mass Cards? If so, do you know that you can get them from CDA? We have sympathy cards which are $5 as well as birthday cards, get well cards and all occasion cards which are $4. And profits from the CDA Mass Card program fund the Scholarship Program. You can purchase

them at any meeting or by contacting Mary Ellen Cote. Please support CDA and our Court by purchasing and using Mass Cards.

Do you have a favorite charity?

Would you like the Court’s Charity Committee to consider them in our four a donation this Court year? Complete the form, available at all meetings and were emailed to members in October. The Committee will select charities based on nominations received one time this year. This does not prevent the board/membership from coming to the rest of the membership with a request which is more time sensitive. Last year the committee received 5 recommendations and recommended 5 awards. The committee continues to agree that award amounts should be as they were last year rather than minimal amounts.

All agreed to accept recommendations for this year's budgeted amount through 3/1/2016, the last general meeting prior to the due date is 2/17/2016 and membership should be advised of last call for this year’s submission at that time. Recommendations received after 3/1/2016 will be held for the following year.
