National Regent’sMessage
Shirley Seyfried, National Regent
Dear Sisters in Catholic Daughters,
I hope you had some time to take a vacation or just
get some rest and relaxation this summer. As summer is
winding down and fall is in the air, we are again gearing
up for our Catholic Daughters meetings, programs, and
activities. Be sure that prayer is an important part of
each of these events within your court and ask God to
guide you in all you do.
We have just returned from a wonderful State andTerritorial Court Officers’ Workshop at beautiful OurLady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois. It was so good
to see so many officers there working hard to do what is
best for the state courts. Thank you to all who were able
to come; may God bless you as you go back to your
states, hold workshops, and make plans for the coming
year. Thank you to the board members for the terrific job
you did in presenting the workshop and for all of the
effort put into your presentations. This will be a big year
as we strive to meet our membership and court
development goals. If there is any way that we on the
National Board can help you, especially with Court
Development, please do not hesitate to contact us.
At the workshop in Belleville, several announcements
were made that will affect all of us. Please spread the
word to our members through your workshops, court
announcements, and newsletters. These include:
1. The Online Store: The CDA web store has been up-
graded to make your shopping for CDA items more
convenient. With the upgrade we are now able to
accept online payments through PayPal®. Using Paypal
allows us to offer you multiple payment options in-
cluding bank account and credit card, while not requir-
ing the CDA Store to accept and secure that valuable
information. To make purchases by PayPal: at checkout
select Payment Terms of Credit Card (opposed to in-
voice) and Payment Method PayPal. Note that credit
card field appears but does not allow you to type.
Please disregard the credit card fields as we cannot
remove them from our website, and we cannot accept
direct processing of credit cards. In addition, now with
the ability to use PayPal, we are changing the payment
policy for orders. Individuals will now be able to order;
it does not need to go through a court officer. In order
to simplify payments, we have decided that we will
now ask for full payment including postage when
ordering. This will eliminate outstanding bills that courts
owe for orders and should save many state Regents
much time in contacting courts with overdue bills.
2. National Projects: We have exchanged one of our
National Projects with one of our National Charities.
Labouré will now be a National Project and the
Disaster fund will be a National Charity. Therefore, the
five National Projects for which you will send $20 per
2
project per year are Habitat for Humanity, Holy Cross
Family Ministries, Labouré, SOAR!, and Smile Train.
Thank you to all who have sent your donations to these
very worthwhile National Projects. If you have not
sent your donations, please send them so
that we can continue to give generously
to our charitable projects.
3. Circle of Love: As you can see from
the logo to the right, we have
changed one of the areas of the
Circle of Love. A proposal was
brought to us to have Family be
one of the seven focuses in our
Circle of Love Program. Since our
National Projects and Charities are
just that, our National Projects and
Charities, they are an entity unto
themselves. They are absolutely not to be
forgotten, but our focus in our action program
will now be Family instead of National Projects and
Charities. So our seven areas of the Circle of Love will
be Education, Family, Leadership, Legislation, Quality
of Life, Spiritual Enhancement,
and Youth/JCDA. Our description of Family for the
Circle of Love program is: The Family Programencourages members to strengthen their families by praying, working, and playing together and byloving and supporting one another in all they do.More information on this program is attached.
Please add the new page to your Tools of the Trade.
4. Earrings: The next two have to do with Ceremonial
dress. We have had a number of requests to allow
small stud earrings to be worn with the robe again.
We have decided to allow this request, but please
be sure to announce that only one pair of small stud
earrings will be allowed. The earring must be on
the earlobe and can be no bigger than the earlobe.
No dangling or hanging earrings.
5. Stockings: Also, we realize there are many states
where it is extremely hot in the summer etc. and many
women today are not accustomed to wearing nylon
stockings. Therefore, we have decided that you may
choose whether or not you wear hose with your robes.
If you wear hose, they must be nude or skin colored.
6. 2018 Biennial National Convention: The next
announcement is an exciting one. We are happy to
announce that South Dakota has been awarded the
2018 Biennial National Convention. Congratulations
and thank you to Barb Weichman, State Regent, and the
whole state board of South Dakota. They will also be
celebrating their 100 years as a state court that year.
7. 2020 Biennial National Convention: Bids for the 2020
convention are due to me prior to our Spring board
meeting. If your state wants to bid for the 2020 BiennialNational Convention, please send 15 copies of your
bid to me before the spring board meeting
which will probably be in early March. The
address and date by which you will need
to send the bids will be announced in
the December Quarterly Newsletter.
Catholic Daughters Sunday is
coming up on October 18th. Please
make it special by planning to attend
Mass together as a court. This Sunday
is a great opportunity to become more
visible in your parish. Wear your CDA
attire: robes, shirts, sashes, or pins. Ask
your parish priest if you can give a pulpit
talk at the Mass. Consider hosting a social
following Mass, displaying CDA posters, banners,
brochures and pictures of programs you have done in
your community and invite all parish women to attend.
Be sure to have plenty “You are Invited to Join” brochures
and application blanks to distribute to all guests. A CDA
Sunday Proclamation is attached.
I hope you have made many plans for the next year
for outstanding programs, which will attract many new
members and get your current members enthused about
CDA. Be sure that all of your meetings begin with a
prayer service for spiritual renewal and guidance of the
Holy Spirit in all you do. Olga Samaniego, our National
Spiritual Enhancement Chairman, has provided a
beautiful Recommitment Ceremony, which can be used
for your first meeting this fall. It is attached.
Please do all you can as members and officers to help
your state meet our membership goals of 100,000 members
and five new courts per state. Everyone think about where
a new court could be started in your state. Call your State
Officers or call us at National, and we will be glad to help
you institute a new court in your state.
This is now the second year of our two-year term.
Be sure to submit your new projects for this year to me
along with electronic pictures of the project to be included
in our New Projects section of Share magazine. It is so
wonderful to read about and see the pictures of your new
projects. Thank you for all you do in CDA and for
carrying out our theme, “Whatever you do for the leastof My brethren, you do for Me.”Matthew 25:40.
Peace and God bless,
Shirley Seyfried

National Chaplain’s Message
Fr. Matthew KuhnNational Chaplain
Dear Sisters in Christ Jesus,
How do you deal with an unsupportive or even hostile
pastor when trying to establish or renew a CDA court?
In two words: love him.
For better or worse, God has sent Father to your
parish to serve the needs of the people of God. How well
Father accomplishes this task is up to him. So how do we,
as part of the people who need him, react to his hostility?
My first suggestion is to sit down with Father and
ask him to tell you about his history with CDA and other
organizations. There may be an old wound on his heart
from a bad encounter in his past. Perhaps he is lumping
CDA in with other organizations that have been hostile
or subversive toward priests. It may just be that he is
feeling overwhelmed. Be aware, too, that the first reason
he gives may not be the whole cause of his reluctance.
Ministry is complex and all-consuming for priests; he
needs your support, too!
You need to spend some good time listening, not
looking for counter-arguments, but truly hearing him
and his needs for the parish. He needs to know he can
trust you, and that you respect him as a person and in his
office as pastor. Make yourself and the resources of CDA
available to him. Invite him to visit a meeting at a nearby
court where things are going well, or to a dinner with a
group of positive and enthusiastic potential court
members from his parish.
Invitation is the key, not pushing, demanding,
or guilting him into submission. If he wants to speak
with a fellow cleric, put him in contact with a nearby
court chaplain, your state chaplain, or even your
national chaplain. Let us be one of the resources you
offer to your pastor.
As in all things, Christ Jesus is our model: give your
life in love for your pastor with patience and humility,
and you will win him over.
Also, trust the Holy Spirit to accomplish God's Will.
It may be that the Lord is waiting for a better moment to
launch your new court, or there may be a neighboring
parish with whom you are meant to collaborate. That
neighboring parish may have a priest who needs to learn
more about CDA. God knows God's plan; we have to
learn it as we go.
So be kind and supportive to the shepherd God has
given you in your parish, and trust the Holy Spirit to
guide him and to guide you in your endeavors.
Peace in Christ,
Father Matthew Kuhn

Keys for Effective LeadershipHelene Shepard, National Regent-Elect
National Leadership Chairman
One of the most admired descriptions of leaders is that they are action
oriented and that they produce results. The most successful leaders have
focused on where they want to go. The Catholic Daughters of today are being
asked to achieve more difficult goals in a shorter period of time. We as
Catholic Daughters know what we want to accomplish in our organization in
the next two years. Yes. It is Court
Development and Increasing our
Membership. Secondly, we must
recognize the value of our
members and seek their
participation in shaping the
future. The question now
becomes, how will we achieve this
goal and what are the roles of the leaders in this task?
In my opinion, leaders need to focus on threekey areas to produce results:
u Provide Direction by sharing a vision of what can be achieved at
a point in the future. We need to have a Strategic Action Plan in order to
accomplish this goal. This involves key members in our states and courts
developing programs which will market our organization to all Catholic
women. This can only be accomplished with proper planning and developing
of a plan that is unique to each state and court.
u Establish Core Values Core values are not descriptions of the
work we do or the strategies we employ to accomplish our mission. These
values underlie our work, how we interact with each other, and which
strategies we employ to fulfill our mission. The core values are the basic
elements of how we go about our work. They are the practices we should be
using every day in everything we do. They govern personal relationships,
clarify who we are, articulate what we stand for, and help explain why we do
what we do.
u Manage Change and Transition by assisting the members in
our organization through change. Leaders are able to help remove barriers
and resistance, which can inhibit top performance. This can be facilitated by
the use the materials that have been provided to the courts in the Tools ofthe Trade and materials for new court development. If you need help please
ask us for assistance.
In past articles we have said that Leadership skills can be practiced and
learned. This is your opportunity to do so.
Do you have information about a new court or a new member joining our
organization? If so, take the lead and become part of the strategic plan to help
reach our goal.
Keep in mind the words of Henry Ford,
“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

Welcome back! I hope your summer
was peaceful and filled with family and
friends. I hope, as well, that you had plenty of
time to relax because now it’s time to hit the
ground running. Now is the time for your
court to be hosting a September BOGO!event. The first step is to set a planning
session with your court’s officers and
members to discuss the court’s goals and
activities for the new year. Make sure that
prayer is an important part of this planning
session. Remember: God has a plan for each of us—and
for our court as well. Next, come up with an event—host
a women’s speaker or fall retreat for the parish, plan a
fall coffee and cake party, or host a “Come and See”court meeting. Send out invitations, call your friends,
bring your sisters and daughters—all are welcome! Make
sure that regardless of the type of event, you set up a
table with CDA materials and literature—don’t forget
membership applications. Ideally, the regent or chairman
of the event should explain a bit about CDA and invite
all present to visit the information table. If you host a
court meeting, begin with a special prayer, introduce
your guests, and conduct necessary business concisely.
Then, introduce a speaker to talk about CDA in general
and about your court’s goals and projects in particular.
Highlight the opportunity to grow spiritually while
using one’s gifts for God’s people and the community.
Make sure you close your meeting with prayer and an
invitation for all guests to join. Finally, two words—
follow up! If you ask someone to join, often she would
like to take time to think about it. Make sure you call her
back. We don’t want to be high-pressure salesmen, but
we want to make sure that a new member feels wanted
and appreciated.
Don’t forget our BOGO! Contest. You still have a year
to add to your membership. Winners will be calculated
by the National Office. There are no forms to fill out; all
you have to do is seek out and invite women to join your
court. When they join, make sure you send in the
applications as soon as
possible. Remember to
order a membership
roster periodically. You
will want to make sure that all new members have been
added to your court’s roster so that they will count for
the contest.
Finally, make sure you pass all leads for court
development on to your state officers or to me. All states
are working diligently and enthusiastically on instituting
five courts before the end of the term. Give them as much
help as you can. We are close to instituting courtnumber 2700! Will it be in your state?
I wish you all a blessed and joyful year as you serve
God together. I know it will be a successful year because
when Catholic Daughters work together under the
direction of God, you Can Do Anything!!!

Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortionprovider, has been caught on camera discussing thesale of aborted baby body parts. In a series of explosivevideos released by the Center for Medical Progress,Planned Parenthood executives discuss various aspectsof the trafficking of human body parts.
The first video shows Dr. Deborah Nucatola, PlannedParenthood Senior Director of Medical Services, describing how she varies abortion procedures to supplyintact body parts. She admits that Planned Parenthoodcharges for each specimen, describes illegal partial-birth abortion procedures used to get the maximumnumber of usable body parts, and discusses thepotential legal liability of harvesting organs.
In another video a Planned Parenthood executive feasts on dinner and wine and laughs about wanting to drive a Lamborghini while she haggles about theprice of aborted baby tissue. A third video showsPlanned Parenthood doctors and lab techniciansdiscussing the value of specific body parts of abortedbabies, including brains, spinal columns, lungs, kidneysand livers. The series of videos can be found at thewebsite CenterForMedicalProgress.org.
Federal law prohibits the sale of fetal tissue. The penalty for doing so is up to ten years in prison and up to a $500,000 fine.
Congress RespondsPlanned Parenthood receives more than $500 million infederal taxpayer subsidies each year. Since the releaseof the videos, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (IA) and severalother senators introduced S. 1881 to defund PlannedParenthood. “As a mother and grandmother, I find thisfootage of Planned Parenthood’s role in the harvestingof the organs of unborn babies morally reprehensibleand vile,” said Senator Ernst. “The American people arehorrified by these videos as well. Simply put, thislegislation ensures that funding for women’s health isprotected and that taxpayer dollars will not go toPlanned Parenthood.”
The bill failed to pass in early August, but the fight is notover. The defunding of Planned Parenthood will mostlikely be attached to an omnibus spending bill inOctober. Call your Senators and Congressman to urgethe defunding of Planned Parenthood.
Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM Cap., archbishop ofBoston and chairman of the Committee on Pro-LifeActivities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops(USCCB), responded to the Planned Parenthoodcontroversy. “The recent news stories concerningPlanned Parenthood direct our attention to two largerissues involving many institutions in our society. The first isabortion itself: a direct attack on human life in its mostvulnerable condition. The second is the now standardpractice of obtaining fetal organs and tissues thoughabortion. Both actions fail to respect the humanity anddignity of human life. This fact should be the center ofattention in the present public controversy.”
