PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

Labor Day is a holiday honoring working men and women. It is observed on the first Monday in September. The United States, Puerto Rico and Canada all observe the first Monday of September as Labor Day. Australia celebrates the Eight Hour Day

commemorating their successful struggle for a shorter work day and Europe celebrates Labor Day on May 1. The first observance of this holiday in the United States came in September of 1882 when a Labor Day Parade was held by the Knights of Labor in New York City. Matthew M. Maguire and Peter J. McGuire contributed greatly to this event and are credited as the founders of this holiday observance, as they were the first to suggest there be a day of observance honoring working people here in the United States. Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter, helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Two years later, in 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September and a resolution was adopted to hold all future parades on that day and to designate the day, Labor Day. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday. The day is usually observed with cookouts, weekend trips, fun events or just plain relaxation. Some labor organizations and businesses hold gatherings for their members and workers to celebrate the day together.

Dear Friends, As I write this Hurricane Isaac is still stirring around in the Gulf of Mexico trying to make up it’s mind about where to land. I’m hopeful that it decided to spontaneously disintegrate or fly to Mars. We’ll see…… Welcome to Labor Day weekend. This Labor Day is perhaps a bit more poignant than usual due to the state of the economy. Keeping those among us who are unemployed is an important prayer intention to keep. This weekend, I am providing the sacraments for the women at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel. These women are led by Sr. Linda Songy and her crew of volunteers. The women meet each Saturday morning for the Liturgy and prayer time. It is the highpoint of their week. When one’s world has been diminished, it’s interesting to note what takes prominence. The spiritual life can grow and deepen through suffering. Please pray for these women. I have been meeting with a committee of Staff who are working on the Strong Catholic Families project. Our intention is to develop new ways in which the home faith can be supported by Church faith. One of the surprising statistics revealed by the national Catholic Youth Ministry is that the strongest Determinant of the faith life of a young person lies in the demonstrable faith of the father and mother. I want to enhance that possibility by doing what is necessary to affect the faith-role of parents in sacramental preparation and in Catholic religious education. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NEWS September 8 & 9 Food Drive School’s back in session! Parents are trying to catch up on expenses with school supplies, uniforms, etc. The

next few months are especially difficult for low income families with children. Please help us help them by bringing the following non-perishable food items to Mass with you the weekend of September 8th & 9th: spaghetti sugar stuffing mix oatmeal jelly tomato paste & sauce pork ‘n beans flour breakfast cereals rice yams canned fruit oatmeal toilet tissue mayonnaise biscuit mix dried beans spaghetti sauces peanut butter Items to be frozen, such as ground beef, chicken, bacon, sausage, sandwich meats, fish, and other fresh items may be brought to the parish office during the week only, during office hours. PARENT’S NIGHT OUT Parents with special needs children are invited to have a worry-free night out, while their children enjoy pizza, fun activities and friendship. Parent’s Night Out is a rewarding ministry, which provides pizza, fun activities and friendship to children with special needs and their siblings while their parents enjoy a night out. Enthusiastic youth and adult volunteers are needed to help take care of the children and create a fun night for them. Experience with special needs children is not required. Volunteers are needed from 6:20 – 9:15 in the parish hall on the Friday nights listed in this bulletin.
