Editor’s Letter

Dear Everyone, I hope that you have all had an enjoyable summer and those who have been away, have had a wonderful rest. It is always a nerve racking time, when results are due. Our old-est grandson received his GCSE results last Thursday. I think that I was more nervous than him! ..but all was well. Let us hope that all youngsters in the village who were waiting for results , re-ceived good news. There have been many events taking place during July and August. At the beginning of July, the village barbeque was held in our garden. Everyone seemed to have a good time, with lots of food and laughter. The next village happening, was the Yard Sale, which was a great success, Thanks to Teresa and her team, who as usual planned a well organised event. On August 10th, we had the Wander Inn in the Village Hall. What a loud and happy event that turned out to be, with much friendship and jollity. The Flower Festival at the church ran from August 10th to August 12th. Many people visited the church to see this wonder-ful exhibition of floral designs. It was entitled “Our Village” and featured every aspect of our beautiful village. We have some ex-tremely talented and skilled people in the village. Finally Thorpe Hall Family Fun Day, provided a myriad of delightful entertainment for everyone. The amazing weather add-ed to the whole experience. Pictures are on page 6. We now look forward to he Rudston Village Show on Sep-tember 14th. Details can be seen on pages 7 & 8 You can also read about the next Wander Inn, which is to be an-other “Fish and Chip” evening….I am assured that there will be lots of fish! This is to be on September 21st and details can be seen on page 3 To anyone who has recently moved to the village, I offer a warm welcome and if you email me, I can welcome you by name in the next news letter. There are some lovely photographs this month; best viewed on line.

Following a query to the parish council, about the state of the Gypsey Race, Jen, our clerk received this reply.

Good morning Jennifer,

Rich has forwarded me your query as the Water Resources lead officer for the area. Gypsey Race is known as an ephemeral water body. Which ba-sically means, that it is completely dependent on groundwater levels to dictate whether it flows or not and where along it length, those flows occur. It will be influenced significantly by weather conditions but be-cause of the groundwater connection, long spells of hot weather or rain will not be seen in the water course until a while after the event. Gypsey Race at the moment is reacting to the knock on effects of the dry weather from last summer and the very dry spring - both of which have combined to mean that the groundwater levels are lower than normal and therefore, not providing as much spring fed water to the water course itself. In relation to the impact of any Yorkshire Water abstraction in the Hull area. This is too far removed from the Upper Wolds for there to be any significant connectivity between the groundwater areas, which would impact on the Gypsey Race. I am happy that what is being experienced and reported by the Rudston Parish residents presently, is a completely natural occur-rence and linked to periods of prolonged dry weather. Please contact me if you have any further queries. Kind regards. Jason Gardner Environment Officer, Hull Derwent & Esk - Land and Water Crosskill House, Mill Lane, Beverley, HU17 9JB

DOG WALKERS One day, I will catch the person/s who allow their dogs to defe-cate on the grass, in front of White Cottage. Then….I will have no hesitation in reporting them to the council. Fines vary from £80 to £1000. Chris Shanks (As I write this, I have just be informed that our front has also been visited by a passing dog, presumably belonging to the same irresponsible owner!!) Sue.

I would like to thank everyone who sent cards and mes-sages of condolences, following Christina’s sudden death on July 2nd.They were very comforting. We moved to Rudston six years ago and knew immedi-ately that this community was where we would stay for the rest of our retirement. Thank you once again, Chris Shanks, White Cottage.

FAMILY FUN DAY A big thank you to all those who attended the 6th Thorpe Hall Family Fun Day In Aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance. A great picture taken by the Beverley Dis-trict Pipe Band, what a wonderful sight... Thank you to our sponsors, in partic-ular Chris West and his family, Andy Hire and all who kindly volunteered and gave thier time on what was a blisteringly hot day...A great effort by the exhibitors, stall holders and display teams…

Whilst a visit would have been lovely by the Air Ambulance this is never guaran-teed and we hope all those involved in the incident on Sunday afternoon are safe and well. Your generosity on the day is going to a great cause and the YAA are extremely grateful to those who gave so generously.

Many thanks from all the team at Thorpe. Somerled Macdonald

Already we are nearing the end of another out-door season. In the Evening league Rudston re-covered from the poor start to finish sixth in Divi-sion 3 (out of ten). The Wednesday afternoon league continued to 28th August, though they also had postponed matches to play. I was unexpectedly called up for a couple of those in August and hopefully will have information regarding that league next time. Club competitions have been disrupted by a number of withdraw-als including one of our best players unfortunately, but at the time of writing it is still intended to hold Finals Day as per schedule on 1st Sep-tember. Triples Day was postponed from the 11th August when we realised it clashed with the village Flower Festival, and when it took place on the 18th was no longer triples! That was particularly affected by unavailable players and only 8 of us were able to play, so it was 2 teams of 4 who competed for the Proctor Cup. Teams are drawn on the day in any case for this one, but we were evenly matched with the winners only pulling a few shots clear during the last few ends. Winning team was: B. Corner, M. Tansey, N. Smith, P. Crossland and Runners-up: S. War-sop, H. Connor, D. Trudgett, J. Warsop. An enjoyable afternoon none-theless. Phillip Crossland

This month’s meeting is on Tuesday 3rd October at 7 p.m. in Rudston Village Hall when Ernie Howard will give us an illustrated talk about Wild Life. Hostesses are Shirley Harland and Anne Murphy and Jean Moore is due to give the Vote of thanks. The competition is a wild life ornament. We will be asking members for nominations for the committee . In August we enjoyed a visit to the Lavender farm at Terrington which included an interesting talk by the founder owner who then gifted the business to his children who now run it. The Lavender was in full bloom and extremely highly populated by various types of bees and butterflies which were fascinating to watch as they collected nectar from each tiny floret. We had lunch there then called in for ice-creams on the way home. Guests and visitors always welcome at our meetings. Contact June Sellers for more information

Flower Festival On Friday 9th August, 61 paying guests plus sponsors and helpers enjoyed wine and supper whilst attending the Preview evening of the Flower Festival entitled Our Village", There were 43 floral designs depicting Clubs, Societies, organisations and businesses in Rudston and £800 was raised at this event. Over the following 3 days over 200 people visited the flower festival and enjoyed the ingenuity of those who had creat-ed the displays..Many of them commented that they had not realised what a busy community we have here in Rudston . Teresa Blowfeld and Becky Staples hauled a large trailer/ trolley up the Church hill to bring a beautiful arrangement of flowers to compliment the rainbow colours of glass surrounded by tiny glass creatures pinned into and on the display. Angela Dawson, Janet Overfield and Jean Simmonds and helpers festooned the Eagle and Pulpits with drapes before creating two wonderful displays on each pulpit to represent Farming at Rudston House by the Dawson family over the past 101 years. At one side 1918 at the farm was depicted with a butter churn, over flowing with butter coloured flowers and various artefacts referring to that era, whilst at the other side was an ex-tremely modern 2019 arrangement using silver metal pipes from modern corn drier and co-ordinating flowers. Susan Ward depicted cricket, yoga, football, all the village hall activi-ties including the visiting post office, the Wander Inn, coffee shop, band practise. Also the monolith. Yvonne Watt and Christine Sawdon arranged pedestals at the Altar and in the alcoves to represent the Church festivals of Christmas, Easter, Harvest Festival, Weddings, Baptism and Funerals. It was very unusual to see a fully lit and decorated Christmas tree in Church in August! Hazel Conner created the Gypsey Race and the public footpaths and Bridleways in the Church Porch. Continued on page 12

Margaret Thompson was helped by Lucy Saville to decorate the front area to show our past and present authors, Winifred Holtby and Eileen Ward whose books were for sale during the event. Charlotte Macdonald portrayed the Thorpe Hall Caravan Site and holiday cottages with a paper model of a caravan and stunning flowers. Jean Corner had collected fascinating historical facts, memo-rabilia and up to date information about the Rudston Bowls Club .June Sellers included tennis balls and racquets in an arrangement for the Tennis Club. Shirley Harland made sure the Newsletter was represented complete with printer, flowers and past newsletters. Kathy Rawlings included the village street names in her pew end arrangements. Visitors were made aware that Rudston W.I. is in its 90th year with a "not just Jam and Jerusalem theme by June Sellers and Harvey stacked floral buns on to a tiered plate. Anne Murphy displayed many crafts and had her debut at flower arranging helped by Margaret Reed, Margaret Raven, Hazel and others to show that there are 2 clever craft clubs in the village .Rudston Rascals Playgroup had made paper flowers and silver bells to create “Mary, Mary, Quite, Contrary”. We are grateful to those who sponsored arrangements to represent their businesses. Including:- Paul Burgess. Welcome from Archers of Bridlington & Burton Agnes based at Burton Agnes Sports Field. Recently the Club was fortunate enough to se-cure funding by way of a Grant from the ‘Lissett Wind Farm Community Fund’ to improve club facilities. The project was named: ‘Club Expansion – Lightening the Load’. Archers of Bridlington & Burton Agnes Archery Club, as many non-profit making sport clubs rely on club subs to maintain the day to day running costs. To move forward with projects can be very

difficult as without increasing subs substantially this is just not possi-ble. One of the biggest problems the Club struggles with is the weight of the targets which are made out of straw. It takes 2 reasona-bly strong people to manoeuvre/lift these onto the stands. A signifi-cant number of the Clubs members are unable to do this due to age (young and old), injuries and a lack of physical strength. This results in an added burden to the few Club members that are able to under-take this task. In addition the Club was also struggling with a lack of storage space and in desperate need of a larger storage container. The Grant will enable the Club to purchase a new to the Club (second hand) 20 foot container and 12 lighter Danage targets, which are much lighter than the straw targets currently in use. The clubs smaller container will also be donated to the Bowls Club based on the same site. The award of the Grant will ensure that going forward almost all of the Clubs members will feel able to put up targets and take them down, including our junior members (where able to). Currently junior members are not allowed to undertake this task as per the Club Risk Assessment, which will now be altered to reflect this. We would like to thank the Lissett Wind Farm Community Fund for this Grant. The Club will be able to expand as a result of the improvement in facilities and increased storage space. This will make a significant difference to the club and its members, thereby allowing more people to engage in the sport and also more importantly our older members to stay in the sport for longer. Another benefit to all Club members will be a re-duced risk of sustaining injuries from maneuvering heavy targets. We also run beginners courses in the summer months and if you are interested you can find more information on the Club website www.archersbba.co.uk
