I remember in the 80’s there were strikes or threats of strikes every year or two. The only lengthy strikes were in 1983 and 1987, but there were some one or two day strikes as well, I believe in maybe 1985. But we were strike weary by then. Dealing with the likes of CPS board president Ruth Love and the late Teachers union president Jacqueline Vaughn, there was not labor peace in those days.

Wasn’t that Democratic National Convention nice? Never have so many from any one state taken the microphone. (Truthiness alert: I have no idea if that’s true, but if anyone has a problem with it, let them look it up. I have a lot to do today.) I took it as a tribute to Illinois and especially Chicago that they provided a slot for nearly the entire delega-tion to address the crowd. Between Rahm, Tammy Duckworth, Luis Gutierrez, Arne Duncan, Gov. Quinn, Bill Daley behind the scenes, and of course our own Mr. President and Michelle “working out is worth it” Obama, our hearts should swell with pride. Illinois Democrats had their fingerprints all over this thing.

This morning was sunny, crisp and beautiful, and it felt very much like the morning of September 11, 2001. My tween and I were late for school, but on our way out the door, I stopped to put out our American flag. My tween was surprised, because being on time is really important to me. I explained that putting the flag out today was even more im-portant to me. I asked her if she knew what today was and she responded with glee, “K’s birthday!” I wasn’t expecting an excited, happy response. Turns out one of her good friend turns 11 year old

If you live in Chicago, chances are you have had a run-in with a CPD officer. It could have been pleasant or one of your worst experiences. If you had a bad experience, it could have been due to your inability to handle the situation due to lack of information about your rights. Many people do not know what the CPD can or cannot do. Here are some guidelines offered by the National Lawyer’s Guild Chicago to help make any future meetings as legal as possible.

For all the hype surrounding the Bears’ newly re-vamped offense, they sure got off to a rocky start against the Indianapolis Colts in their Week-1 sea-son opener, finishing their first five plays with neg-ative 11 yards, a sack, an incomplete pass, a false start penalty, and a pick-six. But, Cutler and the rest of the offense remained calm and turned things around in a hurry, ultimately defeating the Colts 41-21 at Soldier Field.

Nearly 10 years old, RAOUL is the beautiful child of Douglas and Odile Benjamin, and grew from a menswear shirting company to two full ready-to-wear labels for men and women. It was the brand’s simple, classic bags that won us over on our first trip to Singapore, and its schoolgirl-sportif sepa-rates persuaded us to stick with ‘em for the long haul.

On September 10, 2012, standing in crisp morning air of a Chicago fall, thousands of public school teachers took to the picket line for the first time in 25 years. Spirits in the streets are high and the ceaseless honking from passing supporters sug-gests that the public is on the side of the teachers, for now. In the days, and perhaps weeks to come, Mayor Emanuel is likely to begin a bruising rope-a-dope strategy designed to turn the tide of pub-lic opinion against Chicago’s teachers. However, beyond the narrow circumstances of this fight lie broader questions about how Americans perceive school reform in the 21st century.
