SPOTLIGHT!
Senior Capstone Project The Capstone Project is a graduation requirement for all high school students. At North Paulding High, students will complete the Capstone Project when they are enrolled in one of the following English courses: Advanced Composition, British Lit, Honors British Lit, or AP Literature. The project is embedded in the class and will count as a percentage of the English course grade. If a student is completing the equivalent of the identified English courses listed above through Dual Enrollment (Move On When Ready), he or she is exempt from completing the Capstone Project. Additionally, students who are participating in Work-Based Learning during the same semester with the associated English course are also exempt from the Capstone Project (Work-Based Learning students complete a similar project as part of the WBL program).
Requirements Project Proposal: Through the fourth English class, students will choose a career area of interest to research. Working closely with the teacher, students will narrow their topic of research and submit a proposal. Research Paper: Students will write a research paper on their chosen topic and related career opportunities. The paper, itself, will count as one summative grade in the fourth English class. Mentor: Each student is expected to find a mentor in the field the student has selected to research. The mentor should be someone who works in or with the selected career field. Students are to document a minimum of eight hours of interaction with their mentor. This contact can be in-person, over the phone, through video conferencing, email, etc. When possible, students are encouraged to job-shadow with their mentor. Product: During the Capstone presentation, the student will need to present a “product.” The product may be an actual physical product, a performance, a demonstration, or a service. Your product must be related to your research. Students are not required to spend money to complete the Capstone Project. Portfolio: The purpose of the portfolio is to document the entire Capstone Project process from inception to completion. It will contain the student letter of introduction, cover letter, resume, project proposal, research paper, mentor agreement, and mentor log. The portfolio must be collected into one notebook, binder, folder, etc. Presentation: The final element of the Capstone Project is the presentation. Students will engage in a formal presentation of no less than 5 minutes and no more than 10 minutes in length. Students must demonstrate proficient speaking skills and the ability to communicate coherently as they present their project. The presentation must be accompanied by a product (see above).

Recently, students in Mr. Tumlin's AP Environmental Science classes paddled down the Etowah River. Students observed numerous species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. They were also able to see how the river was used by prehistoric Native Americans and how it is currently being used for agriculture and power generation.
