Welcome back to the first Scene newsletter following our summer hiatus. My photo is from the 400 year old villa, Casa Fiori, near Lucca, Italy last May – I was blessed to attend a glorious ten day sketching and watercolor vacation with a fellow SWS and Urban Sketchers members from Dallas – it was a life changing event with an abundance of art, history, food, and fellowship.

Our 56th Exhibition committee, led by 4th VP of Exhibitions, Regina Carl, has been hard at work over the summer to make this year’s exhibition the best ever! A huge thank you to the entire team for your dedication, time and talents! All the details which have come together in a great way including Café management, Juror correspondence, printing certificates, name cards, venue, entertainment, cater-ing, professional standards, shipping, art take in, catalog and handout design, printing. Wow!

Special thanks to Gail Cooksey and company for providing design themes as well as local and nation-al media release and PR, and Pam Wilson for managing production tasks and vendor awards.I am so proud of our Exhibition team’s leadership and what they have accomplished for SWS and our members! The Exhibition’s opening at the Eisemann Center on August 28 and the Awards Reception on September 22, will be spectacular!

Our Board and Committee Chairs also have been working hard to line up another great year of guest workshop artists and events. September brings a special plein air event at the Plano Balloon festival where we join palettes with the Outdoor Painter Society and Plano Art Society. October brings our SWS fall paint out in Mineola-Quitman – thanks to Gaylord O’Con, our Paint Out Chair.

Thanks to Sherry Daerr, our communications/ Constant Contact Chair, Kay Byfield, our news editor and Steve Miller, our webmaster - this team always does a great job keeping members informed. I am optimistic about the coming year and privileged to serve a second term as SWS President.

‘Be fearless in pursuit of what sets your soul on fire!’

And, painting sets my soul on fire! I’m a fairly new artist. I’ve only been painting for the last nine years. I have no formal art training, just a love for creating. I spent my college days split between two disciplines: Inte-rior Design and Accounting; and a lot of my working years doing both. After working several years in the accounting field, I was looking for a creative balance and began taking jewelry classes. Hooked on the pro-cesses, jewelry making became my creative passion in my off hours. I am self-taught in some areas, class taught in others. I started design-ing jewelry, opened my business, D’zyn By Dana; and seventeen years later am still completely in love with the art of making jewelry.

Overall, jewelry design has been relatively smooth; but you know those creative juices don’t always flow, even when you are doing something you love. I came to a stretch where I just couldn’t come up with a single creative idea. So, I decided to step back and try a different creative expression. I took a painting class. I wanted to approach shapes and color from a different perspec-tive. I wanted to just let go and create and hoped that it might ‘jump start’ my creativity in jewelry design. I had taken a few art courses in college but had not worked much in acrylics, water-colors or inks. That was nine

years ago, and I am still hopelessly in love with the art of painting. I’ve taken numerous art workshops since beginning, and am in-spired by a great many artists. Painting and jewelry are my perfect

mix. They each entice, encourage and challenge the other, always spurring each other on. So, now my weeks are a mix of both my loves.

‘Stop thinking! Just Paint!’ That is a phrase that works great for me. Some of my paintings begin with a purpose. Others evolve through the layers, directing their own path. I usually start with a limited palette, an abstract mix of colors, marks and white space. I’ll stand back and look at the painting, turning it different directions to see if any shapes emerge. It’s fun to see the painting cre-ating itself. Many of the marks I make are loose quirky shapes, things that are crooked or slightly off. I prefer drawing with my non-dominate

(left) hand. It creates marks that are less contrived, more abstract. I love experimenting with textures. Most often texture and shapes compete with contrast and color. Then, using negative space tech-

niques, paint the images I see emerging. It’s fun and sometimes sur-prising to see what the final painting looks like.

My favorite surfaces are paper, canvas and birch board. Acrylic is my go-to guy; but watercolor, ink, and charcoal like to sneak their way in. My process of painting is very free-flowing and organic; pleasurable in it’s unfolding, expansive in the knowledge it reveals, and occasionally surprising in its emergence. I look forward to seeing all the ways my paintings and my painting life will reveal themselves in the years ahead

SWS Slide Preview of the Membership Show

The Southwestern Watercolor Society was on hiatus for the summer months of June, July, and August with the exception of collecting entries for the Membership Show on June 30 and show-ing the submitted slides at the preview show before they were sent to the Juror, .

The deadline for entries was midnight on Sunday, June 30, 2019 on Café. After the entries were catalogued to be sent to the judge, they were projected at the Preview Party on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Royal Lane Baptist Church. This gave anyone who was in-terested the opportunity to see all the entries submitted to the juror and to enjoy refreshments and fellowship with other watercolor enthusiasts. It is always fun to see the full range of works that were submitted before the juror selects his or her favorites.

September Membership Meeting

The September Membership Meeting will feature well-known water-color and plein air artist Vlad Yeliseyev who is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, National Watercolor Society. The meeting will be held at the Lover’s Lane United Methodist Church at the corner of Northwest Highway and Inwood Road.

Vlad will have been the juror and judge for the 56th Annual SWS Membership Show and will be demonstrating his “3 Stages and 3 Colors” approach to painting. His goal is to show painters how to focus on clarity in understanding color and its implementation.

The Russian émigré came to the Unites States in the 1980s equipped with a classical art education from Moscow School of Art and a Mas-ter’s Degree in architecture from the Moscow Institute of Architecture. Now he works in his studio in Sarasota, Florida, Rather than painting traditionally beautiful landscapes and cityscapes, he finds beauty in alleyways and paints commonplace scenes. Critics noted his bold brushwork, expert loose color passages, and crisp well edited calligraphy in his paintings. Considered a minimalist, he believes that his challenge is to say a lot with as few brushstrokes as possible so that viewers are free to bring their own insights and interpretations to the work.

Come join us to see Vlad Yeliseyev demonstrate his painting techniques at the September meeting.
