PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Lou Bono,SWS President

Greetings!

We are eagerly looking forward to emerging from winter hibernation to warmer spring time temperatures and activities. Hope you have found time to continue painting!

Please save the dates for upcoming events:

SWS Spring Paint Out, Saturday March 30 (Alternate rain date April 13). This year will be a one day come and go event at White Rock Lake in Dallas. WRL is an urban oasis, with interesting historic land-marks including the old pump station on the south end and the spill-

way scenic overlook. On the north end you may be interested in the pedestrian bridge, Corinthian Sailing Club and White Rock Boat Club. On the east side, you will find the art deco Bath House Cul-tural Center and White Rock Lake museum. On the west side is the stately Mount Vernon home. The Saturday reception show-and-tell will be 6pm at the home of Lou and Jean Bono. More details will be shared in early March.

The joint organization plein air event with SWS, Plano Art Association and Outdoor Painter’s Society has moved from this spring to the fall to correspond with the Plano Balloon festival, September 21-23. This will be in addition to our SWS fall paint out.

We are still looking for an SWS Exhibition Chair for the next Membership Show in Fall of 2019. This would be great opportunity to get involved in SWS and flex your organization or project management and leadership skills while benefiting our members and adding a great experience to your resume! Contact me or any other board member. We have an updated “play book” that is a big improvement over prior years and will make the process much more efficient.

We look forward to seeing you at the February Membership Meeting.

PRESIDENT’S CALL FOR HELP

Your Fellow Artists Need You! SWS is proudly hosting its 56th Annual Membership Exhibition in September 2019! There are some exciting changes being proposed and the Committee is being formed now!

This is the largest annual undertaking of our organization with national reach -- we need many hands to ensure it is a success! Whether you have entered the show before or not, please consider lending a hand on the committee. No prior experience required!

Thanks to outstanding committees in the past, each year we improve our processes -- Last year’s total awards were $8,000 with over 140 artists entering over 300 pieces. We already have a detailed job list and proposed timeline and documents online. We intend to have most of the work done before summer since many of our members travel during those months.

This is a big project, but with YOUR help, each person’s job can be fun and manageable. We are in the process of contacting prior committee members and members at large.

None of the jobs are huge if we have a full committee, and much of it can be done by phone and computer--if you live out of DFW or Texas we still can use your help! Some members have already answered the call. Please see all position descriptions on our website at this link: https://www.swswatercolor.org/exhibitions/positions-sws-member-exhibition-committee

We are so glad you are part of our vibrant Southwestern Watercolor Society. Thank you for all you do!

Please contact Lou Bono by **February 12** to join this exciting [email protected], cell 469-744-7559

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT

Celeste McCall

4Sunny Day

I have spent 26 years teaching porcelain art in nearly every state in the USA and also in Thailand. Getting to tour and enjoying teaching china painting was both fun and profitable because they paid me for every expense plus salary and hospitality. My trip to Bangkok to teach three workshops was the highlight of my career. I stayed at a fabulous hotel, ate at the best restaurants and was given tours on my days off. My hostess was elegant and generous. I’ve traveled so much that going to an airport now is like getting a root canal at the dentist. I enjoy driving though. When I was travelling a lot, I was living in Stinnett, Texas and that was at least 6 hours from most places where I taught.

After I learned to do china painting, my desire to teach was because I want-ed to share knowledge with others. I also enjoyed experiencing the various stages of developing my talent and helping others to develop theirs. From teaching all over the US I found that there are predictable stages of develop-ment. I learned that when a student is discouraged, it always meant that they were about to have a

breakthrough to the next level and I would get really excited.

I was introduced to Watercolor in 2003 when I was lucky enough to meet Nicholas Simmons and Arnold Lowrey online. I arranged to have Arnold come from Cardiff, Wales to Dallas. I still converse with Arnold and we often reminisce. He is my biggest influence in watercolor paint-ing. Michael Holter is another. Both are world class teachers.

Every year I dedicate the entire year to a single art principle, style, or design elements like lines, shapes and forms. It still fascinates me to study these types of things in depth.

My favorite year of learning was when I read the book, “The Biology of Seeing” by Harvard ocular biologist and teacher, Margaret Livingstone. It was like a lightning bolt to learn that the eyes see not only differently but also that some artists, like those with misaligned or even lazy-eyes (strabismus), are often the greatest artists. Examples include Rembrandt and other giants in art. Livingstone’s theory of painting in near values has also been instruc-tive. Why did the master’s keep this secret? College teachers taught me that art had to have extreme value contrasts at the focal point but

that is just one way to have a good paint-ing. There are two others which are also successful. Using near values in bright colors is one way. Another way is using bright colors against dull colors. A look at Monet’s “Impression Sunrise” will show that yes, the tiny boat grabs your eye first, but the first place you look is the orange sun in the blue sky at near values.

Favorites: • My favorite trick with watercolors is feathering, which is a china painting technique. • My favorite value scheme is to use analogous colors in the light tones and complements in the shadows. • Edgar Whitney is my best teacher via a book. Shapes! DRAW! • My favorite saying is by Skip Lawrence which explains every art principle of design. “A whole lotta this and a little bit of that.” • As a forever learner, my favorite gift is a seminar with a great teacher. I’m really enjoying water-soluble oils and love the teaching of Steve Ko. I think he will be very famous someday. • The best female watercolor painters who are also inspirations to me are Soon Warren and Mary Whyte.

My regrets: • I’ve wasted a lot of time being a nerd at the computer (but it’s still my favorite pastime) • I’m so disappointed when I see art which copies other people’s photos or other’s work. Artists need to understand that their creativity will be undermined by doing that. • I regret educational institutions don’t teach students to ‘chain their colors’. • I regret that I didn’t take enough workshops with Arnold Lowrey.

Tips: • Learn to control the water as Arnold Lowrey suggests • Shapes – the silhouette is most important • Large shapes on small paintings provide readability • Analogous colors within a shape or form create a glow • Unity in a painting is the most important principle • Repetition with creativity creates visual music in a painting • Paint major shapes with subtle value changes within the shapes like John Singer Sargent did.

I teach now online at www.artlessonuniverse.com with Cherryl Meggs. I also advise for free at “Thurs-day’s with Celeste” at Trinity Arts Guild in Bedford 1:30-3:30pm

SWS RECENT EVENTS

January Membership Meeting - Artist ThrowdownThe January Membership meeting was different than the other meetings. In January we do not contract with an artist to give a demo. Instead, we plan a program that showcases our own talent.

For the second year in a row, we held a Member Artist Throwdown. This year it featured Pat Kochan, Michael Holter, Bill Dale, and Gaylord O’Con. They each brought a half sheet drawing on watercolorpaper ready to paint. When Referee Jones McConnell signaled that it was time to begin, each painter worked on t their own composition.

After 15 minutes, each painter passed their painting to their neighbor and begin working on the paint-ing they just received. After 15 more minutes, the paintings were passed again, and then again. When each painting was back with its designer, that painter had another 15 minutes to finish it. Each painting was signed by all four painters who worked on it and then the four original paintings were auctioned to the people in the audience. All the proceeds will benefit the 2019 Members Exhibition.

As an added bonus, our sponsor, Asel Art Supply*, came in to show us some of the latest painting sup-plies and everyone received a goody bag with samples and a free watercolor brush. Overall, everyone had a great time learning about new materials and watching four accomplished painters paint

Reminder:*Asel Art Supply gives SWS members 20% off on purchases.

February Membership Meeting

Join us at Lover’s Lane United Methodist Church at the corner of Northwest Highway and Inwood Road for the first program of 2019. Brenda Swenson will be the featured artist. She is the artist author of two books, Keeping a Watercolor Sketchbook and Steps to Success in Watercolor. Her artwork has been featured in Splash 11, 12, 14, and 19; Artistic Touch 4, Creative Freedom, Watercolor Artist, Watercolor Magazine, Watercolor Highlights, Wheels of Time, Plein Air Magazine, and numerous other publications. She has two instructional DVDs on painting and sketching techniques. Brenda has achieved signature status in WW, NWWS, and SDWS. An active participant in the arts commu-nity, she has served on the board of directors for the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. She is in demand to demonstrate and teach her painting techniques to groups nationwide and abroad.

February Watercolor Workshop - Brenda Swenson

In addition to doing a demonstration at the February Membership Meeting, Brenda Swenson will be conducting a three day workshop from Wednesday, February 13 to Friday, February 15. The work-shop, which is sold out, will be held at the Skypony Gallery / Teta Smith’s Studio at at the Shops at Willow Bend Mall, 6121 W Park Blvd, Plano, TX 75093. The mall is just off North Dallas Tollway and George Bush.

The workshop will focus on painting negatively ( painting the negative space around the subject) with watercolor. She will help participants to build their confidence in handling glazes, painting wet into wet, under-paintings and painting into wet passages. Her goal is to help artists to strengthen their understanding of pigments and how they directly relate to the complexed medium of watercolor. Dur-ing the workshop they’ll learn how to create interesting shapes and depth of color with transparent glazes and how to strengthen a painting with overlapping, interlocking shapes and linkage. Students will benefit from daily demonstrations, friendly critiques, and one-on-one help.

SWS Spring Paint-Out

The 2019 SWS Spring Paint Out will be a one day event at Dallas White Rock Lake on Saturday, March 30th. (The alter-nate rain date is April 13). This will be a come-and-go event. After painting for the day, registered artists will be invited to a reception at 6:00 pm at the home of Lou and Jean Bono. There will be a BYOB cash donation and a BBQ dinner TBD. Please mark your calendar to save the date and join us for a lovely day of plein air painting and camaraderie with other artists.
