From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del PárrocoToday is Stewardship Awareness Sunday. Usually

people discuss stewardship in terms of time, talent, and treasure. Often, when a priest starts talking about stewardship, the message people hear is “give more:” give more time, give more talent, give more treasure. But stewardship goes much deeper than that.

At its heart, stewardship is a spirituality. As stewards, we recognize that everything we have and are is a gift from God. My possessions, my abilities, the very air in my lungs, all of it is a gift. From this recognition should spring a deep gratitude for the multitude of gifts that God has given me. Finally, from gratitude should come a desire to use the gifts that God has given me well and to use them in a way that pleases Him. How we use the gifts that God has given us is our way of showing our gratitude and giving back to Him.

Therefore, stewardship must start with prayer. Where are you in your journey of stewardship? Maybe you’re at the fi rst point of recognizing that everything you have is a gift. This can be a hard lesson; our society teaches us to see everything we have as fundamentally ours and to do everything we can to guard and protect it from other people. If that is where you are in your life of stewardship, then pray, “Lord, help me to see more clearly that everything I have and everything I am is a gift from you.” Maybe God is calling you to grow in thankfulness. In that case, ask Him, “Father, grant me an increase in gratitude for all of your many gifts to me.” If the Lord has already cultivated in you a deep sense of gratitude and He is inviting you to translate that into greater generosity, then you can pray, “Lord, thank you for all of your abundant gifts to me. Help me to use them in a way that is most pleasing to You.”

On this Stewardship Awareness Sunday, I invite each of us to prayerfully refl ect on how well we live the spirit of stewardship and how the Lord is calling us to grow.

Deacons: Caring for You…Since A.D. 33Please Support This Year’s Deacon

Formation CollectionOver the last four decades, dozens of Deacons of the Archdiocese of St. Louis have volunteered countless hours of selfl ess, loving care for those in our midst who are in need.

Like those fi rst seven ordained by the apostles, our deacons are called to be ministers of charity and models of Christ-like compassion for the sick, the poor, the imprisoned, and the dying, Deacons “wash the feet” of the faithful each day, seeing the face of Christ revealed in their ailing brothers and sisters. Deacons can be found sharing the Joy of the Gospel, offering us comfort in every facet of daily life.

You can help our future deacons be Christ’s hands and feet with your charitable donation to this year’s Deacon Formation Collection. Deacon formation in the Archdiocese relies heavily on the support of the annual Deacon Formation Collection, Oct. 5-6. Please be as generous as possible. God bless you for your support!

8 Sept. 21-22, 2019 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

Today's Gospel sounds puzzling to contemporary readers, but it can be

made less so by considering the economic system which stands behind the parable.

A steward is dismissed because he is squandering his master's property. He is called dishonest because he is not serving the interests of the rich man, his employer. In response the steward, in an attempt to ensure favor for himself among the rich man's debtors, brokers repayment of the rich man's loans by foregoing the interest and fees that had been levied to line the steward's pockets.

It is this action, in which the steward puts aside his greed and takes the longer perspective in order to enhance his security, which is commended by the rich man.

The passage concludes with three morals for the listeners. The fi rst exhorts the listener to be prudent about the use of wealth. Like the steward in the

parable, those who would follow Jesus must put transitory affairs in proper perspective. Christians should handle the affairs of temporal life with an eye toward eternal life.

The second concerns trustworthiness. Those who can be trusted in small things can also be trusted in great things. If Christians

handle money and other passing things responsibly, then they can also be trusted with the affairs of the Kingdom of God.

Finally, Jesus tells his listeners that no one can serve two masters simultaneously. God must be put ahead of money.

Sept. 22, Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel we see that prudent decisiveness means that we recognize that all our choices in daily living are really choices for eternal life. Admission into heaven is something money cannot buy. The only currency that has any value to secure our entrance is that of love.

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering.

EVENTS AROUND TOWN / EVENTOS ALREDEDOR DE LA CIUDAD We Thank Each of You...

...for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family, carrying on the work of Jesus, and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.
