SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

A new way to recover your stolen valuables Remember when we borrowed one of those awkward, vibrating engravers and wrote our drivers license numbers on everything from our tv to our toaster?

Now there’s a great new way to tag our valuables. It is strongly recommended by our Precinct 1 constable Alan Rosen, and it’s called ProtechDNA. This service is free and here’s how it works: Using a Q-tip, you dip into an adhesive gel that is filled with micro-scopic dots which are chemically etched with a unique PIN. That PIN is linked to your account at ProtechDNA.com You swab the gel on up to 100 of your valuables and then register each item on their database.

If your stolen property is recovered, police can scan the item, read the PIN and get your property back to you. Most recovered items are untraceable to their rightful owners so this is a big benefit for everyone. And insurance companies have partnered with ProtechDNA to minimize claims and losses. Go to https://protechdna.com/ourtechnology to learn more, to sign up, receive your PIN and order the gel for $5.99. The rest of the service is free.

More on maintaining safe streets near schools

Last month, we discussed the traffic problems related to getting children to and from the elementary and middle schools. In addition to near-gridlock at drop-off and pick-up times, neighbors have reported speeding and reckless drivers on the side streets approaching the schools. Our deputies are giving special attention to these problems by posting up at critical intersections and making more traffic stops, particularly for speeding. Although school is nearly out, this summer we will continue to look for ways to create more order and keep children, their par-ents and neighbors along the route safe.

For its part, Mark Twain partners with the adjacent organizations on the Campus Park Advisory Council. The Council meets regularly to address traffic and safety issues within the area. Each of the Council members, including the Parent Teacher Organization at Twain, make an annual financial contribution to support a special, campus park deputy who is on-site during school hours.

Additionally, HISD pays for crossing guards at key intersections and maintains posted school zone warning signs. Mark Twain dedicates staff time to monitor the car pool and main entrances during morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Also, Twain sends parents a weekly communication which contains reminders about traffic safety.

Creating a safe environment for children and the neighbors along the route is simple:

Slow Down — not just in the posted schools zone but on all area streets

Stay off of your cell phone (which is the law in the school zone.)

Give yourself extra time to travel in and out of the area during school hours.

Remind children and adults to cross to school only at crosswalks.

BRAYS BAYOU ASSOCIATION by Billy Pilgrim

Project Brays: As of April 17, 2019, the final channel widening contract from IH610/South Post Oak to Fondren is moving along nicely and is on schedule to complete this year. The channel widening contract from 2,200 feet upstream to IH610/South Post Oak is still in the process of wrapping up. HCFCD met with the contractor several weeks ago to review and finalize the punch list. Brays Bayou Association: The Brays Bayou Association held its April 17, 2019 meeting at the Willow Meadows Baptist Church. The meeting was well attended by a large audience of persons associated with a number of associations, civic clubs, local interest groups and several candidates for the upcoming COH council election. It was an informal meeting with everyone in attendance afforded a chance to speak on whatever subject he or she chose to. Harris County Flood Control District: Gary Zika, Harris County Flood Control District Federal Projects Manager, presented a set of four artist renderings of the Buffalo Speedway, Stella Link, Ardmore and Greenbriar bridges. He said that the Stella Link Bridge extension will begin construction later (July/August) in 2019. One bridge will remain open to traffic during construction of its twin. There will be no modifications to the existing bridge(s), e.g., sidewalk widths, etc. when the bridge is extended. Following completion of the Stella Link Bridge extension, the Buffalo Speedway Bridge contract will proceed. Workmen have recently been observed at the Buffalo Speedway Bridge and North/South Braeswood intersections. According to Zika, they are utility workers (AT&T) locating and moving AT&T’s utility lines. AT&T estimates it will take until November 2019 to complete that task. Stella Link Mobility Bridge: A request was lodged with the representative from Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis’ office for an update on the Stella Link Mobility Bridge. The representative indicated that it will be presented to the Braeswood Super Neighborhood Council 32 board meeting in the near future. Gary Zika also provided additional information about the potential for a new detention basin to be located at the intersection of South Post Oak and South Braeswood Boulevard that he had alluded to at the March BBA meeting. There is a shallow swale/depression currently at that location which will lend itself very well to a new detention basin. HCFCD and COH are in discussions with regard to that issue. Probability appears to be very good for this project. Other Bridges: The South Rice and Chimney Rock bridges will be replaced with new ones. The Fondren Bridge will be “jacked up” sixteen inches. Considerable reconstruction will be required on both North and South Braeswood at those intersections along with new traffic control measures.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL by Jenny Rozelle

Longfellow held a very successful fundraiser in March by partnering with Apex Leadership Co. The organization came to Longfellow for two weeks to teach our kids ways to stay healthy and fit while also emphasizing leadership skills, a perfect pairing with Longfellow’s Leader in Me program. The event culminated on March 28 with the Apex Fun Run, during which time kids were able to run laps with their classmates. Students had collected pledges from sponsors who agreed to donate money for each lap run, up to 36 laps. It was a beautiful day and a fun event for students, teachers and parents alike. Even better: the school raised a gross total of more than $23,000! Thank you to everyone who donated! On March 22, our fourth and fifth graders took a field trip to Rice University. They learned about the school and talked with current college students who encouraged them to work hard and set their sights to attend college after finishing high school. On April 12, our third graders took a field trip to Space Center Houston. A wonderful time was had by all! During the month of March, students were encouraged to read out loud with a friend or family member every night for the Read-Aloud Challenge. On April 5, all the students who completed the challenge for the entire month were treated to an Ice Cream Social with their chosen grown-up. Yay for reading! Speaking of reading, Longfellow’s spring book fair took place April 22-26 with a special evening event on Thursday, April 25, during the school’s Spring Fling fine arts performance night (more on that in next month’s newsletter). We get to celebrate our wonderful and dedicated Longfellow teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10. Look for notices about specific ways you can let your kids’ teachers know how much you care. It is hard to believe, but the last day of school is May 31! We still have a lot of fun and learning ahead of us throughout the month of May.

BPHA YARD OF MONTH by Jackie Addington

Having a background in ecology and a love of gardening, it is inspiring to travel on the main streets in our neighborhood - North and South Braeswood, Buffalo Speedway, Stella Link, and view our beautiful esplanades. These appealing public places communicate that we care about the place we live and encourage all of us to be more mindful of our own lawns and streets. Thanks to the generosity of some of our neighbors' contributions to BPHA, our esplanades have irrigation (or soon will have), plantings, and will be maintained. Beds of pittosporum, loropetalum, and society garlic in most areas and in some key areas, as pictured here. Beds of Indian hawthorn hedge, red knock-out roses, snapdragons, bluish pansies, and white alyssum lift our spirits and remind us to be thankful for our blessings. We can all do our part to keep our lawns neat, trash picked up, and cars in our driveway where possible. Being mindful that we are a neighborhood that cares about our environment and the safety and well-being of our neighbors gives us all reason to be thankful. A special thanks to Jack Stopnicki, a long-time neighbor, officer for BPHA, and chair of the beautification committee for his tireless leadership on this project. I hope when you drive into our area and see the Braeswood Place signs and beautiful esplanades, you remind yourself that this place feels like home and be glad you live here.

HOME AND GARDEN CLUB A very special thanks to Walter and Fran Pagel for a most informative discussion and tour of their lovely orchid greenhouse at our April meeting. Breathtaking examples of a large variety of orchids and a most hospitable evening was enjoyed by our members. Our last meeting before summer break will be a potluck, May 20 at 7 pm at the home of Kathie and Milton Magness, 3518 Grammercy. Thanks to Janet Maxian for a great year of coordination and leadership of our garden club. Featured in our June column will be the efforts of our club to restore and plant the public areas of the fire station. Led by Kathie Magness with assistance from Janet Maxian, other club members, and BPHA, we hope you will be inspired and appreciative of the efforts to make our public areas beautiful.

THEATRE Mark your calendars for the upcoming performance of Shrek The Musical, performed by the Pershing Theatre group. Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 at 7pm Pershing Auditorium Tickets: $7 for adults, $5 for students
