Self-recorded, this album is pure. It’s purely raw, it’s purely beautiful, it’s purely Homestead’s sound. The beautiful acoustic sound is enough to invoke emotion, but paired with the deep, beautiful lyrics- we dare anyone not to tear up a little. Homestead has a powerful album that you can get for free on bandcamp, The love and work that went into this album is obvious to its core.

LATE NITE READING GET REAL:

TALK SUCCESS, HOW THEY’RE EVOLVING, AND THE INDY SCENE

Page 7: Sensory Addiction - January 2014

4

Meeting up in a crowded burger joint, we joined Indy pop-punk sensation Late Nite Reading for lunch to talk where they’ve come from, where they’re going, and what’s it been like for them on their musical journey. Not to mention- delicious burgers were involved.

SA: How did you come up with the name ‘Late Nite Reading’?

LNR: I, (Dalton) and Brady went to school together. We had a band back in 7th grade but really got started by doing a talent show the end of their 8th grade year, the other members (Drew Cottrell, drums, and Clayton Collins, lead guitar) joined at this point. Then in the summer between 8th and 9th grade we did a lot of practicing. It was kind of a joke band to start but we got more and more serious. The name was kind of just thrown in and we changed Night to Nite because when you’re a freshman in highschool that sounds really cool.

SA: You have quite a few covers, why do covers?

LNR: After our 2nd EP we really needed a way to draw more people in, so we did a cover of ‘Pumped Up Kicks’. It got us a lot more attention. We really don’t like to think of these as covers but more of remakes, because we don’t just do the song the way it’s written but we try to beef it up, ‘make it more ballsy’. It’s nice to be different. The funny thing is Clayton joined the band two days before we shot the video for this and he cut his hair very short, he wished it was longer.

SA: How do you feel about your success?

LNR: It’s basically been taking off within the

last year and it’s been amazing. It’s a little strange because this band is such a serious thing now but we still just do it for the fun of it. A lot of people tell us we are rock stars but we think that the minute you call yourself a rock star you are not going to get any bigger. We are still just average guys. It’s a little overwhelming at times. Every day it gets bigger and every day it blows us away.

SA: How had your music evolved over the years?

LNR: Basically it gets less and less crappy. We’ve gone from our first EP we did as freshman in high school to sounding more mature and together. The 2nd EP we wanted to have more of that raw sound you get when you are playing music live. Producers came to our show and took notes so they could get more of the sound we wanted. Drew wrote a lot of the drum parts beforehand in the beginning but then the drum process changed because the songs were structured more in the studio. We did some pre production in New York; it’s been a long process.

SA: What do you think is wrong with the Indiana music scene?

LNR: Before we say anything, we’d like to say that this is advice. We’ve noticed a lot of people complaining about the scene, but not doing anything about it. This is our home state so we gotta love it, but there’s a lot of oversaturation in the Indianapolis area, a lot of close minded or cut throat bands. We don’t want to harp too much on everyone; this is just how we feel.

INDUSTRY PERSON OF THE MONTH: TOM FALCONETour/Band Photographerby: Nicky Parry

This is the first official installment of our “Industry Person of the Month”, meaning a non-musician person involved in the music industry, so we needed someone extra special! Our first official Industry Person of the Month is Tom Falcone, an extremely talented young touring photographer. Tom gave us insight to what his daily routine is like, how he got started, and also some advice for young photographers wanting to follow a similar career path.

SA: How did you get started with band photography?

TF: I had been taking photos at concerts for quite some time, just bringing my camera, no photo pass, at small small shows in NY/NJ. I loved local bands but never thought I’d be able to get photo passes to shows etc. I then started doing some online “zine” stuff for random publications to get passes. I eventually stared doing it more and more and wanted to tour so I offered my services to a band called Anarbor, they gave me a shot on a week run of the Take Action tour when they opened on it, and it fell into place like that.

SA: How did you get your touring gig?

TF: I got Anarbor by meeting them, doing their promos, getting to know them a little more and discussing it with their manager. My current gig is Mayday Parade. I had met someone in their crew a couple

months before I got asked to go out with them. We had lunch together a bunch, and coffee and became good friends. Then he recommended me to the band, been with them ever since.

SA: What do you think is important for a starting photographer to know?

TF: It is hard. If you love it you will make the best out of it. It is definitley a struggle to start and get noticed. But worth it when you do.

SA: What’s your favorite part about being a touring photographer?

TF: Just having a full time job that I’m allowed to be creative. That’s the best thing about it.

5

Page 9: Sensory Addiction - January 2014

SA: What is your process for getting the photos out when you’re on tour?

TF: Here is a day in my shoes:

10am – wake up

1030am – all the “wake up essentials” > brush teeth, water, coffee, deodorant, change clothes

11am – bring all my stuff inside venue and set up my “office” > laptop, all camera chargers, harddrives etc

1130 to 12- send images /videos to manager band label /others on tour from the day before.

1230-5 shoot around, hang out, take photos, do any living things like food or take walks etc

6- doors open, shoot meet and greet

7-11- show

Between 12-5am I go to sleep.

Genre: Rock

Location: Kokomo

Bio: Shiny Penny was founded in 2009 (they just celebrated their 4 year reunion in December 2013) by members Dean and Brad. Since then Eric has joined up with the dynamic duo. Dean and Brad work to bring you the vivacious sound Shiny Penny has recently found. For the most part they did covers, but in September of 2011 they wrote and released their first original song. For the past year they have been playing a lot of Indiana shows, with a few out of state ones as well, and in the past six months though they have completely revamped the band. The new sound can be heard in the excellent new single, “Insanity”. What to Expect in 2014: While Brad is in college, the band wants to focus mainly on recording, while possibly playing a few shows here and there. In the summer, they plan to hit the road again, touring much harder and really bring their new stuff to their home state. They want to focus on sharing the music they make with as many people as possible, including working on a new music video. They have a PR Firm out of Los Angeles, an agency out of Canada, and a record label contract with Streaker Records. They have one fantastic EP released named ‘Stories’. What to Expect in 2014: They just finished recording a couple new songs in the studio and plan on getting out there more and touring! They were very tight lipped about whom, but they will have a nationally recognized singer doing vocals on some of their new tracks. LIVE SHOW REVIEWS

Page 42: Sensory Addiction - January 2014

AUGUST BURNS RED ROCK PONTIAC, MIby: Anna TerebeloOver 800 people spent the biggest bar night of the year (the night before Thanksgiving), at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI. They filed into the warmth of the venue, filling the room with an exuberant amount of band t’s.

Unfortunately, I, personally, was not able to see the first band of the night, Beartooth. However, I was extremely surprised by the amount of Beartooth fans found throughout the venue, since they are relative newcomer in the scene. Perhaps I should not have been as surprised as the band is fronted by ex Attack Attack vocalist Caleb Shomo. I’ll have to catch Beartooth on their next time around, but those who were present did not appear to be disappointed by their performance!

Defeater never fails to disappoint. Their passionate lyrics, accompanied by their firm stage presence, give fans a moment to let loose and live in the moment. Defeater is one of those bands that prove to bring “big hardcore bros” to tears while singing their lungs out. The band continues to resonate with the audience long after the band has

left the stage. Definitely check out Defeater at your next opportunity!Beau Bokan, lead vocalist of Blessthefall, is

known throughout the scene for his stage performance. In past performances, I have seen Bokan hang upside down from a tiny pipe over the stage, while continuing to sing. Because of this, my expectations of the overall intensity of Blessthefall’s set were high. These were easily met. With an abundance of energy and passion,

Blessthefall took the stage, riling up fans immediately. The whole crowd quickly got involved sending crowd surfer after crowd surfer up to the barricade. Some chanted “LIGHTS! LIGHTS!” with the false hope that Bokan would bring out his pregnant wife, a Canadian pop singer, to greet them. At one point within the set, a fan was able to climb onto stage and steal the Ohio State flag which was displayed by one of the members. A “capture the flag” type game ensued between the band and the crowd, as the show was leading up to the big Ohio State vs. UofM game, which did not end well for the Wolverines.

The guitarists from August Burns Red 39

Page 43: Sensory Addiction - January 2014

emerged onto the stage looking confused. They picked up guitars, and fumbled around with them as if picking them up for the first time. I, not knowing the members of the band by face, assumed that the band was still setting up and that these were their guitar techs. Boy was I wrong. Suddenly, the set started and of these confused looking boys turned into manly beasts. If you have never seen August Burns Red live, you should definitely add this to your bucket list. There is not a single person that I have talked to who does not enjoy their live show. One of my friends has in fact been brought to tears by the sheer passion that this band has to offer.

This was a show dedicated to the passion for music and thankfulness for the music community. It was definitely one to remember.

Snowy roads couldn’t keep people away from what promised to be one of the best shows to close out a musically awesom 2013. From start to finish, the 4th, and final, Hometown Throwdown in Gas City, IN proved to be a treat for everyone who braved the weather.

Portland opened the show with a strong performance to get the crowd moving. Next up, Takers stormed the stage with an in-your-face presence. When they came onto the stage, no one was really sure of what to expect from this band. From the moment they came onstage, you could feel the fire they had for performing. They launched us into some heavy beats and very tastefully done screaming. Lead singer, Ryan Lloyd, really knew how to belt it. Part way through the set they even threw trash bags full of balloons out into the crowd. Lloyd also took a can of silly string and blasted it into the crowd, putting an end to an unforgettable set that makes you want to see what Takers has in store for future performances.

Two more bands separated Takers and headliners, The Drama State. Black For Tomorrow played a lenghty, but powerful set, followed by the rowdy Southern Djentlemen, who had the crowd entranced from the get go.

When it was The Drama State’s turn, they launched into their set right away with some old fan favorites off their EP, Stories. So many in the crowd were dancing and singing along and really enjoying the good vibes.

During their set they also played two new songs. The first was “1,2,3,4”, which proved a crowd pleaser. The second, although untitled, was a major hit. The Drama State is a band that will definitely go far in the future.

All bands really rocked out the Hometown Throwdown and it was a pleasure to see them perform!

Following the incredible acts of Setback, Uh Huh Baby Yeah, The Monument, Let It Happen, and the unfortunately now broken up Radio Rescue, BoyMeetsWorld took to the warmed up stage with professional grace. The crowd fill the floor, up to where the seats began. There was hardly a person standing still from the moment BoyMeetsWorld began to play. Even if their feet weren’t moving, their heads bobbed along to the ever catchy music.

The boys were on point that night. Ryan commanded the beat, holding steady throughout the entire performance, assisted by Brad on bass. Drew was all over the stage, while he and Pat pumped up the crowd with each guitar riff. Craig showed his leadership and fantastic stage presence as the lead singer.

Midway through their set, the crowd got a surprise visit from the one and only Santa Claus! Santa threw out candy canes and gift boxes to the crowd, who were more than happy to receive the presents.

BoyMeetsWorld carried on the Christmas spirit by playing covers of classics as well as some tracks off their new Christmas album, Merry Christmas, Ya Filthy Animal, If you are a fan of great pop-punk and enjoy the Christmas season, this show was definitely for you.

GIVE AND TAKE HEADLINE FANTASTIC 6 BAND LINE UP AT THE HOOSIER DOMEby: Kerstynn Lane

Give and Take was supposed to release their EP, Noteworthy, on December 27th, but the release was pushed back to February 11th of this year. Despite that setback, the Hoosier Dome was met with a night of incredible music.

This night started off slow, but sweet with the beautiful acoustic ballads of Homestead. Those there with a significant other clung to each other in embraces of love while the band crooned their romantic tunes.

Next up were Indy pop-punkers, Chin Up, Kid. They came on stage with vivacious energy and everyone in the crowd instantly perked up and was ready to go. During their entire set, kids were singing along and dancing. Some were even moshing in the crowd. The band gave an outstanding, energetic, and crowd-pleasing performance. Will Sharaya, the talented frontman, even joined in the moshing at one point, bringing the crowd into the performance even more.

To keep the vigorous energy going, Drop The Anchor performed next in what proved to be a nearly flawless performance. While

they are considered mostly pop-punk, Drop The Anchor brought a mature, indie rock sound to the show. Each member sang into the microphone, in beautiful unison. The crowd was even more hyped up during Drop The Anchor’s performance.

Lost Years were next up. They did not disappoint! The crowd was now moshing harder, with greater energy. They had memorable hooks that could make someone run home after the show and instantly put Lost Years in their music library. Lost Years is a punk wonder that solidified the professional quality of this show.

Conquerors put a harder edge on the show, upping the moshing ante several levels. Frontman Michael Sugars was excellently ridiculous onstage. He a had continuously powerful performance, only to be helped by the amazing drive the other band members provided. They all were jumping, hitting each note with vigor.

Give and Take had 5 hard performances to follow. However, they proved they could handle anything. Between guitar issues and venue blackouts, Give and Take handled what came their way gracefully and professionally and still put on an impeccable show. Give and Take are performers who will bring the crowd’s energy level back up to maximum, no matter how tired the fans are feeling. Not one person was standing still and the moshers took over.

Each of these bands are one that if you haven’t seen them yet- you need to put that in your New Year’s Resolution. They are a sight to see and have an excellent sound for you to hear.

SHINY PENNY GIVE GLOWING PERFORMANCE FOR HOMETOWN FANSby: Nicky Parry

Shiny Penny recently announced new music and a new sound and decided to celebrate with their hometown of Kokomo. Fans gathered at the Rhum Academy of Music, anxiously waiting for what Shiny Penny had in store for them. They enjoyed acoustic performances by other local artists in the front room before being let into the performance room where Shiny Penny were to perform.

Once 8pm hit, the fans were let in the doors. They gathered around the room and nearly every single one sat down. Then, each band member came from different corners of the room and the energy level rose. When Shiny Penny struck that first note, the crowd started to stand up. Soon, nearly everyone on the floor were on their feet and grooving to the steady rock sounds.

Dean Schimmelpfennig, vocalist for Shiny Penny, commands the keys. His voice is one of the best around Indiana. The notes he held wowed the crowd.

It helps when Dean is backed by talented guitarist Brad DiCarlo. Brad pleased fans with a cool, bluesy guitar feel that still had that rock edge. Together, they are quite the duo.

Eric Hyman, the newest bassist for Shiny Penny, proved an excellent addition to the band, helping to carry the beat steadily throughout the entire performance.

Whatever Shiny Penny had to do to revamp themselves worked. This performance was mindblowing, despite any slight technical difficulties that came up during. The band was not shaken up whatsoever. When you see this band, you will wonder why they are still in Kokomo, IN. This band is one that you need to look up. Their new single, “Insanity”(available on iTunes), is one to get into your music library now. The future is very bright for Shiny Penny and they can only keep going up and up from here.

Smoke and Mirrors is a little of many different genres. They are some rock, some alternative, and some indie; they keep you intrigued. The night started with an acoustic set by Some Times. They had people swaying, and the singers’ voice was very different. It was kind of raspy, but in such a beautiful way.

After that then it was time for Smoke and Mirrors! People edged forward toward the stage in anticipation for them and they were not disappointed. What’s a show without some technical issues? In the beginning the bassists’ bass would not register with the amp but that was quickly resolved. They launched into songs that made the hair stand up on end and my feet not stop moving. There were people in the crowd singing along, it was magnificent! The night concluded with a band named The Wickerwolves. It was actually their one year anniversary show, and I

wanted to make sure that I gave them an honorable mention. The guitarist actually did a small speech about the importance of helping the Indiana music scene, which I personally enjoyed. Before this night I had honestly never heard of them but I was glad to see them perform. I will make sure to attend more of their shows in the future. This was a great night of music with some pretty awesome guys. All the bands really played passionately and you could feel it all night long.

Page 58: Sensory Addiction - January 2014

by: Nicky Parry

If you want to see a performance that truly rocks, beginning to end, Authors is a band that needs to be on your “Must-See” list.

Before they even began their performance, the sound check was a hint to the high level of energy to come. You knew this was going to be a loud, crazy, but fantastic show. And it proved to be nothing less.

The moment their performance actually started, it felt like a tornado swept through the venue. The pressure seemed to change and everyone was swept up in the show. Vocalist Alex Goodman was never in the same place longer than 10 seconds. He moved everywhere all at once it seemed. Each member holding a guitar perfectly timed jumps together at the perfectly precise beat. The cohesiveness of this performance sets Authors apart. You can’t pay attention to just one band member. Each of them is doing something onstage that is attention grabbing. You can’t help but watch in pure awe.

Their, EP, Tides, is a major hit among the local metalcore scene. And while it is amazing to listen to through the ear buds, nothing compares to hearing its tracks live. The sound was near perfect. Alex, Collin, and Nich were each just incredible with their respective vocals. Nich and Colin spun their guitars around their bodies, never missing a note in the process. Zach knew how to keep up, playing the 5-string bass with impeccable precision.

If any band knows how to put on a show, it’s Authors. From the get-go, you will be sucked into the performance. When it’s done, Authors will have left you breathless. Prepare yourself for this sweeping sensation, Authors. They are currently touring, so if they are coming near you, pick up that ticket! Take your friends, your parents, anyone that wants to see one of the best stage performances this girl has ever witnessed (and I’ve seen quite a lot of shows). If you like raw talent, energy, and amazing music (did I mention, they have some classical influence in their excellent tunes?) combined, go see Authors live. Pick up their EP. Do what you have to in order to support this band because they have what it takes to go far.
