Healing places for individuals and families touched by addiction are successful when congregations learn facts, avoid judgments, practice love and apply firm supports.

—The Rush Center of the Johnson Institute

In 2013 TLC underwent a seven-month long inten-tional discussion on the issue of marriage equality. After much discussion and a survey of the congrega-tion, it was determined TLC was largely supportive of welcoming families and individuals regardless of sexual orientation. The TLC council unanimously vot-ed in 2014 to adopt this official welcome statement:

“Transfiguration Lutheran Church welcomes all who seek to experience the joy of God’s love and grace. We welcome all because God welcomes all: people of every race, culture, sexual orienta-tion, gender identity, and relationship status. Our unity is in Christ. Therefore we walk with each other through addictions, physical and mental illnesses, legal and socio-economic circumstances and other life challenges. All are welcome here."

The council also voted to seek rostered status as a member of ReconcilingWorks. ReconcilingWorks is an organization of laypeople, pastors, and congre-gations primarily from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) working for the full ac-ceptance and inclusion of people of all sexual orien-tations and gender identities and expressions in the life of the Church.

In October 2014, TLC was officially accepted as a member of ReconcilingWorks and includ-ed in their directory of congregations. You can learn more about ReconcilingWorks at: www.reconcilingworks.org. We will celebrate this milestone on Sunday, Feb-ruary 22, with “Reconciling in Christ Sun-day,” welcoming Pastor Anita Hill, Depu-ty Director of ReconcilingWorks, as our guest preacher. Pastor Hill will also pre-sent us with our Reconciling in Christ certificate.

We also celebrate on that Sunday with guest musi-cians, the One Voice Ensemble. One Voice Mixed Chorus unites gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people and straight allies to build community and create social change by raising our voices in song.

One Voice is known for its musical excellence, diverse programming, and deep commitment to commu-nity outreach and is described by Chorus America as “one of the region’s best ensembles.”

“In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men came from the East to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him

homage.” Matthew 2:1-2

When the Christmas decorations roll out

every year at our house my wife places

a ceramic plaque, on its own little easel,

on the kitchen counter. The plaque reads:

“THREE WISE MEN…ARE YOU SERIOUS?”

Our Bibles do call them “wise men,” but

that is overstating things quite a bit.

They were “magi.” The term covered a

conglomeration of astronomers, astrolo-

gers, fortunetellers and magicians of

varying degrees of quackery. Matthew

most likely had Persian astrologers in mind.

Astrology!! Jews regarded astrology as

a frivolous, ridiculous waste of time, to

say nothing of it being forbidden in the

Law. No…these guys who show up in

Matthew’s gospel were hardly wise at

all. Instead, to Matthew’s readers they

must have seemed like the epitome of

Gentile idolatry and foolishness. When

they weren’t wiggling divining rods or

poking around in chicken gizzards, they

were trotting off in this direction or that

searching for the latest key to the future.

Centuries of art, folklore and affection

for “The Wise Men” have served to blunt

Matthew’s point in telling the story of their

strange appearance. From the Jewish

point of view these so-called “wise men”

were not too tightly wrapped. They were

out there at the edge of the lunatic fringe.

They were unclean, pagan idolaters. So

we must ask ourselves, why? Why is the

story of the visit

of these magi in-

cluded in the gos-

pel story?

In Matthew’s story

of the birth of

Jesus the Magi do

indeed represent

the Gentile world.

By including them

Matthew declares

that salvation

comes to them as well as to the house of

Israel. And what better symbol for this

all-inclusive salvation than magi – the

most preposterous quackery Gentile cul-

ture had to offer? Matthew declares that

salvation comes, not just to the noblest

and best of the Gentile world, but also

to the trailer trash of the Gentile world

as well. God’s Messiah is for all.

St. Paul called it all a mystery. It does

seem mysterious, doesn’t it? God’s love

in Christ is mysteriously accepting. God’s

grace in Christ is surprisingly broad and

inclusive. God’s saving work in Christ is

for everyone.

Annual Meeting The TLC annual meeting will be held Sunday, January 25, at 10:45 a.m. Vot-ing TLC members are asked to come and cele-brate the minis-tries of this church and to plan for the

coming year, including voting on nom-inees for service and approve the annual budget. Watch for annual reports available in mid-January and

plan to attend.

Call Process The TLC Church Council is in the pro-cess of form-ing a Call Committee for the purpose of calling an-other full-time pastor to re-place the vacancy left by Pastor Stephanie. The Call Committee will be made up of six to eight members rep-resenting as much of the TLC de-mographics as possible. The team will begin its work in January by as-sessing the needs of the congregation and creating a ministry profile to de-fine the gifts and abilities of our next pastor. As soon as February and March, the team could be receiving names for interviewing. Please pray for TLC and the call committee and that the Holy Spirit would guide us to

our next pastor.

Christmas has come and gone. New Year’s resolutions have been made; whether it’s starting to lose weight, work out, or change a diet, they are most often directed at making us feel better about ourselves.

Some will be kept, some will be broken; it’s hard to stick to your resolutions because the benefits are delayed. Don’t be discouraged by an occasional slip up; just ac-cept the fact that you slipped and pick up again with your resolve to change.

Here are a few spiritual resolutions that we can fulfill, one by one, on a daily basis.

I will live in the present moment; I will not obsess about the past.

I will be thankful for the blessings in my life.

Strive not to be a success, but rather of value.

Let the past make you better, not bitter.

Instead of focusing on all the bad, be thankful for all the good; each day you have is a blessing from God.

As we prepare for the new year, start looking ahead to Yoga at TLC as a great way to make a commitment to yourself and your wellbeing! Our winter session will run on Mondays 7:00-8:30pm from Jan. 26 through Feb. 23 (with no class on Presidents' Day 2/16). The four- class session will cost $48, or drop-ins are $15. (Sliding scale is always available if you speak with the teacher). Please bring a yoga mat if you have one, or you can borrow one if needed, and wear layers and bring a blanket. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the instructor at

[email protected].

Shape’n Up with

Worship This exercise time is back. Time to shape up your core….both physi-cally and spiritually. It will run for six weeks on Thursday evenings – January 8 through February 12, 6:30-7:30 in the Fellowship Hall. It is free of charge for women 13+, led by Jennifer Longley, with a short devotional time followed by four different types of exercise per week that strengthen your core. Equipment needed: a mat, towel, and an exercise ball (if you have one).

Yoga In the New Year

February is American heart month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the US. Every year 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease. Although you lack the power to change some risk factors, such as family history, sex or age, there are some key heart disease prevention steps that you can take.

Make healthy choices.

Use spices to season food instead of salt.

Exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.

Eat a heart-healthy diet: fruits, vegetables, whole grains.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Get enough quality sleep.

Get regular health screenings. You are never too young or too old to take care of your heart. For more information and heart healthy ideas, visit: www.heart.org

Women’s Bible Study Women of TLC are invited to gather on Monday, Janu-

ary 12, 11-1, to spend time exploring repentance and

forgiveness as we study the story of Uriah, David, and

Bathsheba in II Samuel, the penitential Psalm 51, the sto-

ry of the sinful woman in Luke 7, Jesus’ final words in

Luke 24, and Peter’s preaching in the Temple as record-

ed in Acts 3.

This will be a Brown Bag lunch. Chicken noodle soup will

be provided, bring bread or crackers to go with your

soup and anything else you would like for lunch.

Led by Arthur Murray and Renee Jefferson Sundays and Wednesdays in March at 10:45 a.m.

Of all the books of the Bible, Job engages with the question of human suffering more powerfully than any other. In this study, we will put the challenges of life in today’s world in conversation with this ancient story. Week 1: How do we care for someone whose life is falling apart? Week 2: Is it OK to get mad at God? Week 3: How can I pray for someone who has hurt me? Week 4: “I just don’t feel like I have anything to offer.” – Isolation or

Community?

Mothers of Young Children

Bible Study, ‘Beautiful Mess,’ starts on Sat-

urday, January 10 at 9:00 a.m. We will meet at the Perkins on 98th and Normandale in Blooming-ton. We will meet once a month on the second Saturday of each month. All are welcome!

Carlson, will bring her creativity to Transfiguration on Sunday,

February 1. At 8:30, there will be Coffee Hour with Nancy where

adults are invited to an informal time with her in Fellowship Hall.

Then at both 9:30 and 10:45 “Funday Sunday” worship services,

she’ll teach us how she draws her characters (we’ll draw along with

TLC Book Fair Thank You The Book Fair on November 23 was a great success. It was a busy, buzz-

ing Fellowship Hall that morning as people perused the tables, talked

about books and other items for sale, and bought books. A special thanks

to Elise and Mike Sevig for all the work they put in choosing books, box-

ing them up and arranging them, and giving TLC a large percentage of

the sale. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped set up the displays

and took down the books. And a HUGE thank you to all TLC members

who supported the sale; our earnings totaled $1118.57.

Ebola Update – December 2014 We are pleased to report that all the items that we as a congre-gation collected during our Ebola Drive back in September have arrived in Liberia and are being distributed. Though the shipping took longer than we had hoped, it was not unexpected and could have been much worse. Thanks be to God (and USPS) that the items have arrived! Here is a note of appreciation just received from our pastor friend in Liberia: December 9, 2014 I may not have words to express how grate-ful we are to you and your congregation for the level of love and support given to us at this time. But let me in this small way say “thank you.” We just received news from our post office that the remaining boxes have finally arrived at their offices. We will go ahead and begin processing the items for distribution to the churches, mosques, clinics and elderly early next week. Let me once more extend to you and your congregation and the Luther Seminary family our deepest appreciation for all the support you have given us and are giving us. Peace during this season of Advent. Shalom, John

Many thanks to all who have contributed to fight Ebola. So far, Transfiguration has shipped 113 cans of powdered cleanser, 691 face masks, 3610 disinfect-ant wipes and 5562 gloves to Liberia to support our brothers and sisters in Christ during this crisis. We are still accepting do-nations of these items which will be shipped through Global

Health. In part as a result of our efforts, other Lutheran churches

in Bloomington are starting collections as well.

Next Steps The Bloomington Conference of the ELCA (eight congregations in all) have committed to funding the next Global Health Ministries shipment to Liberia to continue to support the Lutheran Church in Liberia as they seek to eradicate Ebola and rebuild their commu-nities. The total cost of this shipment is $12,000. If you would like to participate in this Bloomington wide effort, please make your contribution payable to Transfiguration Lutheran Church, Memo: Ebola. Another way to participate is to join our Global Health Ministries volunteer team. Contact Mary Mahre at 612-345-4235.

VEAP Meeting Basic Needs. Building Stronger Communities. Neighbors Serving Neighbors. It's been one year since VEAP relocat-ed to 96th and Lyndale in Blooming-ton. How wonderful it is to have such a spacious, well planned facility for the hundreds of families who receive the many services provided, and for the staff and volunteers as well. Thanks, again, to all of you who so generously donated toys, books, mit-tens, scarves, hats, and gift cards to the Holiday Toy Drive. Your contribu-tions helped give gifts to about 5000 children who were in need this year. Thanks also to those who decorated the grocery bags on, 'God's Work Our Hands,' Sunday. They were used to add a personal touch to the meals that VEAP provided at Christmas. It's time for 'Meals-In-A-Bag' during the cold winter months. Here are some suggestions that you might add to your shopping lists. January-Breakfast Hot cereal, pancake mix or Bisquick, canned fruit, sugar (small bag), muffin mix, cocoa mix, cold cereal. February-Lunch Soups, crackers, canned tuna, peanut butter, mayo, pickles, cookies, juice. When we all do a little, it adds up to a lot!

God's Work. Our Hands. November 30 Thank You Thank you to all who volunteered during "God's Work. Our Hands." this past Sunday.

It was a great morning of activity in the Fellowship Hall, the kitchen, the Adult Ed

Room, and cleaning sidewalks of snow. Here are some of the statistics:

Seventeen volunteers spent time sorting, inventorying and packing items for

Global Health Ministry (GHM). Twenty boxes were taken to GHM on Monday.

Thirty-two fleece scarves were prepared by Sunday Church School children,

older youth, and adults to be given to VEAP for Christmas gifts.

Over 100 beautiful Christmas cards were made by individuals under the tute-

lage of Lori Luoma and Diane Sorum. These cards were bought by some, with

proceeds going to support TLC's work with Ebola. The remaining cards were

sent to

The church building was filled by the aroma of many dozens of delicious cook-

ies baked by Tracy Witte, Roxanne Stroman, Patrick Lanenberg, and a group

kitchen elves. The cookies were placed on plates and delivered to homebound

TLC members, friends of TLC members, and the Fire Station on Xerxes and

106th St.

Many bags were decorated for VEAP Holiday meals.

Two volunteers cleaned snow off the driveways and walkways of eight TLC members.

A great way to spend a cold, frosty Sunday morning-warming the hearts of many-those who provided hands for God's

work and those who were the recipients of the gifts of our hands.

Mission Camp 2015 We had so much fun last year at Camp Luther Dell we are going again. Dave Peet, Luther Dell Camp director, can’t stop gushing about what a meaningful experience it was to have TLC there to help fix up Luther Dell Bible Camp last Summer. We re-roofed and re-floored the staff cabin, saving it from destruction and making it an oasis in the midst of wild children; we replaced 12 broken windows in the main dining hall; we weeded and mowed and washed windows and trimmed and fixed things and painted things. The place looked great

after nine days of good hard work.

This is an inter-generational camp experience. We had members of all ages working hard together, praying and playing. It was a meaningful week that we look forward to again this

year.

Camp Luther Dell has again reserved a week in June for TLC members to come and serve. We will be there from Monday, June 22 to Sunday, June 28. You can stay in a cabin, camp on the grounds, or even bring your own camper. There is only a minimal cost for meals. This is a great experience for people of all ages, even for those with small children--trained camp staff will watch and entertain your children while you work. There is plenty of work for older members as well. Projects this year will includ renovating the swimming beach, clean up and repairs to the main lodge building, landscaping, laying paver tiles, finishing work on two

cabins, power washing, painting, window washing and weeding.

Come for the whole time or come for just as many days as you can. Bring a friend. Experience the joy of camping, being with family and friends, doing meaningful work, playing games, eating good food, worshipping God and getting away for a time. All of

this in one place at one time. All of this in service to God. Work never felt this good.

Sign up through the “Life of TLC” Sunday bulletin insert or contact Pastor Ed with questions.

Senior Adults February 19 – World Premiere

Play, GOD GIRL, by Kristine Holmgren, at

the History Theatre. For over

a decade, Kristine Holmgren's

thoughtful political commen-

tary was featured on the edi-

une. Ordained to the ministry

of the Presbyterian church,

Holmgren’s essays are pub-

lished by The Guardian, New

York Times, Chicago Tribune,

Boston Globe, Baltimore Sun,

and Los Angeles Times. This is

an autobiographical play

about one of the bright and

determined women who helped break through the

stained glass ceiling within

the Protestant church in the

1970’s. $31 includes trans-

portation and ticket. We

will stop at a Baker’s

Square on 98th & Lyndale

Orville and Milda Ruud have

moved to Becketwood on West

River Road, and Jim and Susan

Sharrow have moved to North-

field. Due to busy schedules and

sales of homes that went quickly,

TLC did not have an opportunity to share a blessing with them before

they moved. So this is our way of wishing them well with many blessings

as they relocate. Orv, Milda, Jim, and Susan will be greatly missed.

NOTE: If you or someone you know at TLC is relocating out of the area

and will no longer be near enough to be a part of the TLC family of faith,

please let the office know so there can be a recognition and blessing of

them as they leave. We want everyone to know they are an important mem-

ber of this family of faith and will be missed.
