clean copy in the first issue binding, which has been neatly

repaired. Without the final two blank leaves.

the early ink signature of W. Bradshaw at the head of the printed title. This is the

bibliographer David Gilson's copy, with his calligraphic bookplate and pencil

acquisition note: "Bought from A. P. & R. Baker, Durham, August 1974". Given by

him to John Jordan in December 1982, with Jordan's booklabel (no.3).

Gilson E12. First published in 1849 as "The Railway Library, No.8", printed by

Billing, with Routledge's address as Soho Square. It was reprinted in 1850 and 1851,

without a printer's name, again in 1852 and 1853, with Routledge's address as

Farringdon Street, and in 1855 with the addition of "New York: 18 Beekman Street".

It was reissued in Routledge's Ruby Series in 1875 (in larger format). Gilson makes

no mention of this intermediary edition. The firm became George Routledge & Sons

and moved to 7 Broadway, Ludgate Hill in 1865.

Without the half-title. Small stain at head of pp.202/3 and a few corners turned down.

A good copy. With the booklabel of John Jordan (no.23).

evidence of this being an early issue.

Gilson E60 refers to a copy at St. Peter's College, Oxford, with the same imprint and

here. He suggests it may be a later issue of the 1883 edition. The St. Peter's copy is in

dark blue cloth, and has advertisements for the "Florin Edition" in red cloth. We are in

plum or red cloth and have four pages of advertisements for "Every Boy's Library",

"Ruby Series", "Juvenile Books" and "The Pansy Books".

A good copy, with the ink signature of E. J. Smith.

Long Acre, but without mention of Glasgow in the imprint or a frontispiece. The

advertisements are for "Novels, 250 Volumes. Two Shillings Each". The endleaves

and the lettering blocks are the same as item 10 but decorative elements have been

added to the spine and the top edge is gilt.

The front cover states this to be from "The Ruby Series" and Gilson E41 dates this

series to 1875-77. He had never seen a copy, but it is the same setting as Gilson E60,

which is dated to 1883, with later reissues. It is on thinner paper than the other five

copies above. Woodfall & Kinders address is given as 70 to 76 Long Acre and the

advertisements at the end are for "Every Boy's Library". "Ruby Series", "Juvenile

Books" and "The Pansy Books".

A very good copy, with the original bookseller's label of "Davies & Son, Stationers,

Gloucester".

cheaply printed edition on poor

quality paper. "Lever Bros" is named

of advertisements are for "The

"Sunlight" Library of Books by

Standard Authors, given during 1897

for “Sunlight and Lifebuoy Soap

Wrappers". 100 novels are listed,

including Sense and Sensibility and

Pride and Prejudice.

The paper and quality of printing is poor,

though a little better that the Lever

Brothers edition. "S.A.P.Co." is named on

the spine, and though the overall designs

are different, the lettering blocks would

appear to be the same as on the Lever

Brothers binding.

Broadway House, Ludgate Hill [1898?] £100

The front cover has "The Steventon Edition of Jane Austen" blocked in blind. This

appears to be a reprint of the Routledge edition of 1884 (Gilson E60). Gilson notes

that an edition of Sense and Sensibility described as "Steventon Edition" was

published in August 1898, but no copy had been seen.

Early repair to corner pp.3/4 and corner torn pp.93/4, without loss, and a few other

leaves rather roughly opened. The sewing is weak, but holding. With an ink

inscription on front endleaf: "Louisa Lora Pitt, Hurley House, Norwood, 1903". With

remains of a lending library label, with number 492, and two ink withdrawal stamps

dated 1916. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.743).

"The Steventon Edition of Jane Austen" blocked

in blind. It would appear to be a reprint of the

Routledge edition of 1883 edition (Gilson E60).

However, unlike the previous item there is no

frontispiece portrait, the title is printed in black

and the imprints differ.

There are also four pages of advertisements at the end for "Novels, 250 Volumes,

Two Shillings Each". The set of five Austen volumes (22-26) were available for 10

shillings.

A few pages rather roughly opened at the head with tear pp.257/8, without loss. A

little browning and foxing but a very good copy. Bookseller's label of H. H. G.

Grattan, of 17 The Borough, London Bridge. Booklabel of John Jordan (no.50).

copy of this fragile production. It is printed in double columns.

Not in Gilson or located on COPAC. Gilson E65, a Routledge Sixpenny Novel, dated

to 1884, is also printed in double columns and with the same collation, but has

different wrappers and advertisements and was printed by Billing and Sons of

Guildford.

The advertisements in this edition are for Eno's Fruit Salt inside the front cover,

Keating's Powder inside the rear cover and Vinolia on outside of rear cover. There are

additional advertisements at the end. The illustration on the front is signed by F. C.

Tilney. There is an ink stamp on the half-title "J. B. Eato / 33, 35 & 41, Fargate /

Sheffield". It is a good copy of this fragile and ephemeral edition.

Gilson refers to such a copy on NUC, but had not seen one, and nor had he seen a

copy of E53 in an original binding.

A very good copy, with the half-title. Ink signature of Gwendolen R. Barrs at head of

title, and booklabel of John Jordan (no.36).

Gilson E53, but again undated, printed by Blacklock and with a different setting of the

title to the other two Ward editions. There is no half-title, and it does not appear to

have ever been present. The binding designates this as from the "Royal Library" series

of "Choice Books of Famous Authors". There are four pages of advertisements, but

no mention of the "Royal Library".

A little foxing towards the front. Ink signature of E. Theedam, dated October 1st

[18]88.

The right-hand headlines give charmingly succint captions for the action on that page

- such as 'very droll' and 'shattered hopes'.

pages of advertisements at the end.

Gilson E77. A cheap re-issue in the Manchester Library series. It was listed as

published in September 1892, in two forms, priced at 6d and 3d. Gilson had not

seen a copy and the only copy on COPAC is at Cambridge. The frontispiece has

repairs to recto and is rather tatty. It is bound third in a volume of four works, the

others being:

ownership inscription dated November 1894. Lettered "Burt's

Home Library" at the foot of the spine and with four pages of

advertisements at the end for Burt's Home Library, comprising 250

titles of standard works "printed from large type, on good paper,

and bound in handsome cloth binding, uniform with this volume.

Price, 75 cents per copy". Pride and Prejudice was the other Austen

title to appear on the list.

This is a good copy. With the booklabel of John Jordan (no.93).

1893.

A strip has been cut from the head of the front free endleaf, but a very good copy.
