This was the 27th year the National VeteransGolden Age Games were held. It is theculmination of a years preparation using theVAs recreational rehabilitative therapy. TheVeterans Affairs has the largest of thisprogram for veterans the nation over. Itbegan with a few veterans in the West, andnow, over 700 veterans gather to competeagainst each other and to renew oldacquaintances.
A veterans Affairs Medical Centerusually hosts the Games; sometimes, a fewfacilities will combine their efforts to host theGames. Each veteran who attends must payhis or her own way there, and the hosting VAprovides meals and entertainment for them. This year, the Games were held in St. Louis,MO...often called the Gateway to the West.
From the Berkeley Senior Center, Su
Carroll, a 20-year Navy veteran, went tocompete in Dominos and Swimming. Thiswas her 12th year to compete in the Games. She was able to take her very own cheering
section with her in the person of Sy Blye. Each of them had to come up with the meansto attend, raising funds and saving monies.
There were many venues to competein...air rifle, golf, 9-ball, bowling, and much
more. All venues were divided into groups byage: 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85 and up. Dont be too surprised toknow some of the more senior veterans canoutdo some of the younger ones. Somecompetitions are also divided between thegenders. There are competitions for thoseambulatory, those who are wheelchair bound, and those with visual impairments. All are toencourage the veterans to enhance theirphysical capabilities as much as possible, challenging them to keep as physically activeand fit, and for as long as possible.
In 2004, those who won medals at theGames were automatically eligible tocompete in the National Senior Olympics, and several veterans did compete in the 2005Senior Olympics. Su Carroll was among thefirst group of veterans who were notrepresenting their respective states, butrather, veterans from all over the country.
Even though the Games are pretty
well established, there are also neweractivities for the veterans to compete in.When the Games were held in Hawaii acouple of years ago, many veterans learnedhow to propel an outrigger. This year, the
javelin throw was added to the competitions.A new game, Bullet Ball, was introduced tothe veterans as an extracurricular activity. Itis a game two can play either sitting down orstanding. It is where the players bat a ballacross the table towards each other, and is
perfect for those who are working on eye-hand coordination.

The veterans feel the best thing about
the Games is the possibility that they might
run into old comrades, something that seems
to happen at least once during each of the
Games. As the Games grow, so do the
reconnections. As the Games continue to
grow, the number of veterans competing also
grows. The capabilities of the veterans has
also increased. When Carroll first attended in
2001, she was only one of nine women
veterans. This year, there were some 75
women veterans there.
Aside from their own competitions,
they were able to watch other teammates at
their competitions. There were also outside
trips that many of the competitors were able
to enjoy. Best of the extra activities was the
Bingo Game. All prizes were donated, and
some of them were really great, including a
brand new computer with all the bells and
whistles. If the prize was too big for the
veteran to take on the airplane home, the VA
would ship it home for them.
All in all, the Games were the rousing
success they are every year. Su Carroll
returned home with a gold medal for the 50-
yard swim, and a silver medal for the 25-yard
swim. She bombed in Dominos! Next year,
she hopes to do better when the Games will
be held in Buffalo, NY.
The Silver Haired
Legislature, a group ofrepresentatives, all age60 or older, and electedby their peers, lobbiesthe Legislature on issuesimportant to the statessenior citizens.Sponsored by the stateBureau of SeniorServices, it brings
together senior citizens interested in WestVirginia politics and policies. The Silver-Haired
Legislators will convene October 31st throughNovember 2nd 2012, at the Capitol. Allmembers have a goal in common: to positionLegislation concerning seniors in the spotlightof state lawmakers.
While some may view the group assimply a mock legislature, lawmakers regardthem as a valuable resource. The group comestogether to discuss, debate and report on issues
that relate to senior citizens. Past stateLegislatures have actually taken action on thereports and recommendations of the Silver-Haired Legislature.
The topic for the Health and HumanResources Committee focused on the problemsin Nursing Homes: Mandatory drug testing andbackground checks for the staff, and havingonly qualified LPNs and RNs administermedications. Also, tighter security for anyone
entering a nursing home and have proper ID;i.e. name tag or badge, change the wordingregarding staffing to increase the requirednumber of staff, and to have impromptuinspections and reports.
Agriculture Committee focused uponincreasing the Food Voucher Bill, support forCoal Resolution, and natural gas drilled andsupplied in West Virginia.

ADULT DAY SERVICES304-263-8873, Ext. 114
Celebrating 17 Years!Supporting Families in Adult Caregiving
Program Manager: Kathy McIntyre, BSW, LSW (15+) Ext. 114Activities Coordinator: Katherine Donovan(5+) Ext. 118Activities Assistants: Dale Bradfield (10+), Jackie Galbraith(New!), Deana Keplinger (5+), Sarah Melchek, Shelley Lynn(5+), Lily Pryle, Jessica Seibert, Gloria Simmons, andKathleen Teter.
Adult Day Services provides family caregivers with respite (a
break from the constancy of care, attention to rest, take care oferrands, or do what they need to refuel their physical andemotional energies).
While they do so, their assisted adult loved one receives safe, supervised assistance with activities they enjoy, as well aspersonal care if needed. They can join the congregate program atthe Senior Center or we can come to them at home.
Family caregivers also are provided with free information andreferral services, care counseling and support groups, and
educational trainings.A caregiver resource library of books, videos, and computer
access is provided, as well as a modest lending closet of durablesupplies.
Our trained and experienced team of staff and volunteers arededicated to providing care and assistance as they would their
own family member, many of whom have been or are familycaregivers themselves.
Theres a little known ritual we have during our monthly staff
meeting. On occasion, when a person we have cared for passesaway, we light a candle during the meeting and share ourmemories of that participant as a way of putting closure to ourexperience and to honor the one for whom we cared (bothphysically and emotionally).
If you are a family caregiver who needs a bit of a break in
caregiving each month or each week, or if you would like yourassisted loved one to benefit from meaningful activities andsocialization, give us a call or stop by for more information.
November is National Alzheimers Disease Awareness Monthand National Family Caregiver Month. We are also entering avery busy time of the year, adding additional stress to busy familycaregivers.
Music is being given a lot of attention recently as beneficial tomany folks, including those with advanced dementia. In fact, forsome folks, they have experienced an awakening whenreintroduced to familiar music of the past. Hospices are now
hiring Music Therapists to aid in comfort and quality of care.
I came across a flyer that did not indicate the source but I
believe it was generated by Hospice of the Panhandle. Indiscussing Music Therapy, the document stated that the basicgoals were to decrease anxiety, decrease agitation, reduceperception of pain, compliment pain interventions, reduce
shortness of breath, decrease nausea and vomiting, decreaseisolation and loneliness, address spiritual needs, addressdepression, and increase quality of life.
I believe music can be beneficial for the family caregiver aswell for many of the same reasons. Incorporating music inactivities, daily chores, and during a break from tasks can makefor a more pleasant experience and day. With the holidaysapproaching, consider how you can incorporate appropriate
musical opportunities in your life and in the life of others. Whenconsidering gift giving, think about favorite relaxing or motivatingmusic the receiver may enjoy, be it an assisted adult, a personwith dementia such as Alzheimers, or a family caregiver.
For more information about Alzheimers, check outwww.alz.org. For a glimpse of the benefit of music in unlockingmetal doors, go to http://www.npr.org/2012/04/18/150891711/for-elders-with-dementia-music-sparks-great-awakenings. For more
information about activity ideas for folks with dementia andsupport for family caregivers, call 304-263-8873, Ext. 114 or [email protected].

Blasted Belly Fat! Belly fat has been linked with a higher risk of heartdisease, diabetes, cancer and, not surprisingly, this week, dementia. A study from Boston University School ofMedicine examining the medical records of 733 people founda connection between having excess visceral fat in middleage and dementia in later life.
Visceral fat is the type fat found deep inside theabdomen surrounding vital internal organs. It is active ratherthan passive, as was once believed. Visceral fat pumps outpro-inflammatory cytokines which lead to chronicinflammation and elevated insulin levels. Excess visceral fatis associated with pancreatic, colon, breast, and endometrialcancer.
Men usually start out with more visceral fat than women.
But as women age and reach menopause excess fat tendsto be deposited viscerally rather than subcutaneously, or justunder the skin. The American Institute for Cancer Research(AICR) warns that a waist measure of 31.5 (80 cm.) orhigher for women and 37 (94 cm.) or higher for men isindicative of increased risk.
Aerobic exercise and simply eating less seem to be thebest way to get rid of belly fat. The aerobic exercise doesnthave to be extreme. Walking on a daily basis is the easiest
way to effectively reduce belly fat.It has long been known that calorie restriction in test
animals is one of the most effective dietary interventions tolower their cancer risk. Researchers are currently studyinghow calorie restriction in humans works relative to tumorsuppression.
The number one way to reduce calorie intake is to put
more plants on your plate. Vegetables and fruits added to thediet tend to crowd out higher calorie food choices. There isonly so much room on the plate after all!
In addition, eating colorful vegetables and fruits has anextra bonus. The bright colors in plants contain protectivesubstances called phytonutrients that are in themselveshealth promoting.

BSS Thanks to Randy SmithIt may not be December yet, but
Berkeley Senior Services is celebratingChristmas a little early this year thanks to thegenerosity of Randy Smith. New rockingchairs for the porch of the Senior Center, aflat screen television, furniture and a newfreezer for the kitchen were of the fewpurchases the former Sheriff recently
donated.Randys endless giving to local
organizations has been above and beyondanything this community has everexperienced. Because of his dedication andloyalty to Berkeley County, when he won theWV lottery in 2010, the entire county won!
We are overwhelmed by hiskindness! Not only with material things thathe has given, but his willingness to visit theCenter and to learn more about the programs
that are offered to keep our seniors activewithin the community, commented LindaHoltzapple, Executive Director of BerkeleySenior Services. Randy visited the Center inSeptember after he was asked to serve asthe Honorary Chairman of the Potters Bowl, the most popular fundraiser for BSS.
Bethany VanGorden, NutritionSupervisor, commented, No words canexpress my appreciation for Randysgenerous contributions towards making theBSS kitchen fully equipped to better serveour seniors! It helps make my job so mucheasier too!

The little things make a big difference when itcomes to your End-of-Life Care.
When asking our many seniors if they have any form of AdvanceDirectives they say to us, No, why should I, my family knows
what to do for me . . . . There are several issues when you havethis mindset. In the health care field, we go by a commonphrase, If it is not in writing, it does not exist. Unfortunately forthe people who go with the, my family knows . . . method, thisusually causes major conflict among the family, and they losesight of the intended wishes. In some cases a physician canassign who they feel as the appropriate family member, or in rarecases, one can become a ward of the state, and the state canmake the decisions for you.
In the health care field, we come across the situation whereimportant decisions need to be made in regards to your health. When you cannot make those decisions for yourself, you need tohave something in place to do this for you. There are manyforms of Advance Directives that help in the time of a healthcrisis situation. Feelings and emotions change when we are putinto a stressful situation and asked to make a life changingdecision for our loved ones. If you really want to help your familymake the best decisions for you, put it in writing. The firstmisconception is that you have to pay a lawyer to draft and
complete your Medical Advance Directives. This is not the case.West Virginia has done a great job in having available resourcesto our aging population. A great website through the WestVirginia Center for End-of-Life Care (www.wvendoflife.org) offerseducational material and resources that can assist you whentalking with your loved ones about end-of-life decisions. Anothermisconception is that you have to assign a person to make yourEnd-of Life decisions for you. Two methods where a person isnot assigned as your end-of-life decision-maker are thePhysician Orders for Scope of Treatment, i.e. POST form, and
the Living Will. On these types of Advance Directives you do notassign a specific person(s); instead, you list what type ofinterventions you want and how long to continue theinterventions to sustain your life. The last misconception is that ifyou complete a Medical Power of Attorney you lose your right tomake any decisions for yourself. On most Medical Power of
Attorney forms, unless purposefully taken out of the document, the first sentence on the document states that it only goes intoeffect when you are no longer able to make the decision foryourself.
Paperwork can be lost or misplaced very easily. You can protectyour important document(s) by selecting the opt-in box on your
Advance Directive, then faxing it to the WV e-Directive Registrythrough WV Health Information Network (www.wvhin.org). Theywill hold and make available your Advance Directive to treatinghealth care providers. This is a great resource in securing yourchosen form of Medical Advance Directive(s). If you need an
Advance Directive notarized, Berkeley Senior Services haveNotaries on staff to help with this process for our senior
population.

Berkeley Senior Services would like to thank the staff at
Briarwood Dental Center and the staff at the U.S. Coast Guard fortheir dedication to our seniors during the annual Day of Caring, which was held September 11th.
14 volunteers from Briarwood Dental Center gathered at the
Senior Center Tuesday morning before 9:00 a.m. On the agenda forthe day was painting 3 different areas within the Senior Center, pulling weeds, and mulching the grounds at both the Center and the
In-Home Care office, known as the Pink House.
While the Senior Center was getting its beautification, JasonWatts and his team of volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard were
busy throughout Martinsburg, Falling Waters, and Hedgesville areashelping seniors and disabled in their homes with their Fall clean-
up. The team, made up of more than 20 volunteers, was busypainting, trimming shrubs, cleaning gutters, cutting and removing
trees.
We sincerely appreciate the efforts of both groups and theirhard work commented Linda Holtzapple, Berkeley Senior Services
Executive Director.
The Day of Caring is sponsored by the United Way of the
Eastern Panhandle and gives volunteers an opportunity to helpthroughout our community.
For more information on how you can help Berkeley SeniorServices, please contact Amy Orndoff [email protected] or 304-263-8873 ext. 130.

Ed Wilson is a trueexample of a team
player. Devoted togiving back to ourcommunity. Ed is an
active BSS Boardmember, Chairman of the March of Dimes SignatureChefs Auction, and is on the Mountain State AppleHarvest Festival Board, just to mention a few of his
activities!I had the privilege of working closely with Ed
while preparing for the Mystery Dinner TheatreFundraiser. Not only was he dedicated behind thescenes as a part of the planning committee, but he
kept the entire audience in tears from laughter duringthe event. He is such a go getter and we are so
blessed to have him on our team!!

We are very grateful to Samantha whogenerously volunteered almost 60 hours in themonth of August alone to the Berkeley SeniorCenter! At the age of 12, this energetic and
bright 7th grader assisted in the BSS ActivitiesDepartment and in the Nutrition/Kitchen
Department during her summer vacation. Notonly does Sammie, as we endearingly call her, capture the heart of all the seniors at the Center,
she is a valuable asset to our team. Alwayswilling to help, her effortless smile and
enthusiastic attitude carries over to whatever task is asked of her, including assisting with EGO (Enjoy Growing Older) Dinners served in the
evenings the third Monday of every month at BSS. Although she is anexcellent student (All Honors), active in her middle school choir, and finds
time for her friends and family, she still continues to find time to supportus. This almost teenager restores our faith in the youth of America bydisplaying with her actions and generous demeanor a great example ofcommunity spirit. Sammie has been volunteering since February 2011and thanking her for all she does is overdue! Thank you, Sammie, for
being YOU!(VOLUNTEERS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT)
