Update
Our discernment journey
continues. The Discernment Committee
worked very hard and did an excellent
job of interviewing candidates for
Rector of St. Luke’s. They
recommended two candidate to the
Vestry for consideration. For health
reasons, one of the candidates withdrew
from consideration. After going through
the interview process and much
prayerful consideration and discussion
the Vestry decided to continue the
search process.
The Vestry met with Canon
Joe chambers of the Diocese of
Missouri to discuss our options. These
options are 1) enter into a contract for a
Priest in Charge and after a period of
time, usually two years, we can offer
them the Rector position or enter into a
new search, 2) enter into another
Interim Priest contract and continue our
search, and 3) utilize Supply Priests
until our search is successful.
At a special meeting of the
Vestry on Sunday, August 14th
, the
Vestry decided to pursue the Priest in
Charge option and will immediately
begin the interview process. It is hoped
that we will be able to fill the position
within two or three months.
Over the past eighteen months,
St. Luke’s has not been on hold but
moving forward. We have continued
upgrading our facility with painting the
inside and outside, the sidewalk to our
entry has been replaced, we are in the
process of upgrading the landscape in
front of the church. We have had to
replace two air conditioning units and a
water heater. I am sure I have not listed
all the projects as they have been
numerous. Our outreach programs have
continued and new members have
joined our Praise Ensemble.
Parishioners have stepped forward
taking on leadership positions and
involvement in all of the above projects.
Our Interim Priest Mother Doris
Westfall did an excellent job helping us
explore our past, present, and our vision
for the future to prepare us for this
transition.
A challenge we humans have is
waiting, most of us are not really good
at it and in our fast paced society we
want it now. I shared with the Vestry
the following story from the book When
the Heart Waits by Sue Monk Kidd. She
tells of sharing the story of Jonah in the
belly of the whale to a six-year-old
vacation Bible school class. The
children fell into a discussion about how
they would manage to escape if
swallowed like Jonah. “I’d start a fire in
the whale’s stomach and he’d cough me
out!” Declared one fellow. “I’d stomp
on his tongue till he spit me out,” said
another. The suggestions grew wilder
by the minute. Suddenly a thoughtful
little girl spoke up: “I’d call my daddy
and wait till he got me out.” All these
years later her simple wisdom still
resonated in me: call on God and wait.
God has a Priest for St. Luke’s, we just
have to pray and wait until He brings he
or she forward.

Monthly Ministries September Mission/Ministry of the Month: Circle of Concern
Circle Of Concern serves west St. Louis County, a part of the St. Louis metropolitan area known for
beautiful homes, corporate headquarters, good schools and a thriving business community. West County is also
home to tens of thousands of families that struggle every day to make ends meet. Lay-offs, underemployment,
illness or injury, age and more – many families in the thick of West County prosperity find themselves urgently
in need of assistance. Circle Of Concern can help. We are, first and foremost, a food pantry. In 2013, we fed
27,382 individuals with 44,927 bags of groceries – enough to put a bag on every seat in Busch Stadium, with a
few thousand to spare. At Circle, feeding families is just the beginning, though. We also offer financial support,
scholarships, job mentoring, children’s programs and holiday events.

Preschool Help
The preschool is in need of volunteers to help on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoons from 11:30AM
-3:00PM. We require two adults to be present at the preschool at all times, and currently, there is only one
teacher available during these hours. The responsibility is very simple: be there as a second adult in case
emergencies arise. No teaching is required. If you can help, please sign-up on the calendar sign-up sheet
found on the sign-up board. Please see Roger Koch, Chris Sturgeon or Julie Sturgeon with any questions.

Focus on Core Values: Faithfulness
St. Luke’s fifth core value is Faithfulness and states: “We share the unwavering belief that
Christ died, rose from the dead and will come again.”
The parishioners of St. Luke’s are firm in their adherence to promises and their observance
of duty. From the June 18th devotional in “Our Daily Bread, when it comes to problems,
the way out is to trust God on the way through.” Our belief is that God will lead us
through all our challenges and transitions to achieve His goals. We truly believe that all is
possible with God’s help.

David Pendleton Oakerhater (September 1)
“God’s warrior” is an epithet by which David Pendleton Oakerhater is known among the Cheyenne Indians of
Oklahoma. The title is an apt one, for this apostle of Christ to the Cheyenne was originally a soldier who fought against the
United States government with warriors of other tribes in the disputes over Indian land rights. By the late 1860s Oakerhater
had distinguished himself for bravery and leadership as an office in an elite corps of Cheyenne fighters. In 1875, after a
year of minor uprisings and threats of major violence, he and twenty-seven other warrior leaders taken prisoner by U.S.
Army, charged with inciting rebellion, and sent to a disused military prison in Florida.
Under the influence of a concerned Army captain, who sought to educate the prisoners, Oakerhater and his
companions learned English, gave art and archery lessons to the area’s many visitors, and had their first encounter with the
Christian faith. The captain’s example, and that of other concerned Christians, from as far away as New York, had their
effect on the young warrior. He was moved to answer the call to transform his leadership in war into a lifelong ministry of
peace.
With sponsorship from the Diocese of Central New York and financial help from a Mrs. Pendleton of Cincinnati, he and
three other prisoners went north to study for the ministry. At his baptism in Syracuse in 1878 he took the name David
Pendleton Oakerhater, in honor of his benefactress.
Soon after his ordination to the diaconate in 1881, David returned to Oklahoma. There, he was instrumental in
founding and operating schools and missions, through great personal sacrifice and often in the face of apathy from the
Church hierarchy and resistance from the government. He continued his ministry of service, education, and pastoral care
among his people until his death on August 31, 1931.
Half a century before, the young deacon had told his people: “You all know me. You remember when I led you out to
war I went first, and what I told you was true. Now I have been away to the East and I have learned about another captain,
the Lord Jesus Christ, and hi is my leader. He goes first, and all he tells me is true. I come back to my people to tell you to
go with me now in this new road, a war that makes all for peace.”
