addition, they’ve earned the American Stroke Association’s Get with the

Coordinator and Educator at North Florida Regional Medical Center. Light

The Gainesville Barbergators Chorus – Get ready to mark your calendars for June! The Gainesville Barbergators Chorus Presents: “Barbergators Road Trip!,” A Musical Journey with Special Guests: Lunch Break, on Saturday, June 13th at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM at Oak Hall School Edith D. All materials will be provided. Call (352) 265-9040 to register. Craft class is held every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 12:30 – 2:00 PM. Craft/Knitting & Crocheting/Card-Making Workshop - Bring your favorite project, whether it is crochet, knitting, working on an album, plastic canvas, making cards or whatever else you are into at the moment. Come and enjoy creating while visiting with friends. Some limited supplies will be available for your use. Hope you can join us for a fun afternoon on Thursday, May 28th

(the 4th Thursday of every month) from 2:00 – 4:00 PM! Four Seasons Garden Club – The Four Seasons Garden Club, established in 1969, is a federated club in the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month in order to study design and horticulture. In May, the club members will celebrate the completion of the year's activities for 2014-2015. Awards from the State Federation will be presented, and the new officers for 2015-2017 will be installed by Sandra Messer, outgoing District V Director. A covered dish luncheon will be held at the conclusion of the

program. Join us for fun, food, and fellowship at 9:30 AM on Thursday, May 14th at the Senior Center! Needle Work Group – Bring your favorite needle work project, whether it be crochet, knitting, embroidery or whatever you are into. Come enjoy some needle work fun while visiting friends. You will need to bring your own supplies. This group is for people who are experienced with needle work and want to meet with a group for more enjoyment. We hope to see you there! We meet every Tuesday from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the Senior Recreation Center.

Knit & Crochet – If you are interested in learning how to knit or crochet or are experienced and would like to join a group, this is the group is for you. Bring your G hook and other supplies. All skill levels are welcomed. We will teach. We meet every Wednesday at 2:00 PM.

Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild (QACDG) –The QACDG meet every Monday and Thursday beginning at 9:00 AM at the Senior Recreation Center. The QACDG also holds a general monthly meeting on the first Thursday of each month from 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM at the Senior Recreation Center. The Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of quilting and related arts for individuals of North Central Florida through education, inspiration and information. techniques. Bring you current project and supplies. Join this wonderful

opportunity for creativity, friendship and sharing ideas while make beautiful

4:00 PM.

Storysong: Making Your Memories into Music – Have you always wanted to

be able to write songs? Now's your chance! This class will be held Monday,

May 4th and 11th from 3:15- 4:45 PM. We will take your stories, individually and

as a community, turn them into poems or short prose, and then add music.

Cathy will lead you through this process, helping you choose the tempo, rhythm

patterns, chord structures, major or minor key-- inspiring your creative expression

and broadening your understanding of the songwriting process. We will sing the

original creations together, sometimes adding movement or other arts. Towards

the end of the series, selected songs will be recorded so people can have a

record of their own song-stories, and there will be an opportunity to share for

those who wish, at a Storysong Showcase performance! Taught by Cathy

Tree City Quilters Guild – The Tree City Quilters’ Guild cordially invites you to

their Quilt Show – from fabric to fabulous – celebrating the art of quilt making –

to be held at the Best Western Gateway Grand Hotel, 4200 NW 97th Blvd.

Exercise Programs

Chair Yoga – Join us for a 1-hour chair yoga class every Tuesday at 11:30 AM. Increase flexibility, decrease pain, relax, and enhance your sense of well-being. We will move from breathing and seated relaxation through gentle seated exercises and yoga poses for the upper and lower body, to carefully guided standing postures using the chair. Please bring a yoga mat. If you are just beginning, or have forgotten your yoga mat, loaner mats are available at the front desk of the Senior Center. A medical waiver is required to participate in chair yoga. This can be picked up at the front desk. A physician’s signature may be required on this waiver prior to participation. Dance for Life Long Health – Classes will be held every Tuesday from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Experience the joy of rhythmic motion! The aim is to promote health for mature adults through joyful motion that focuses on fun, fitness and creativity. These classes are organized around themes and use dance techniques from jazz, modern, and various national styles that contribute to experiencing the joy of rhythmic motion. Each week we flex physical, mental, and imaginative muscles to create a new dance. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. These classes are sponsored by UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine. For more information call (352) 733-0880 Encore Dancers Workshop – Classes are held every Thursday from 3:30 – 4:30 PM. Encore Dancers Workshop provides mature dancers with an opportunity to continue their practice in an adult- friendly environment. Rusti Brandman, UF dance faculty emerita and Shands Arts in Medicine dancer in residence, will facilitate sessions and expects that the participants will be instrumental in determining the direction of the program. The initial plan is that the weekly sessions will consist of warm up, skills and conditioning, creative exercises, and dance phrase work using concepts primarily from ballet and modern dance. The classes will focus on fun, community, and goals important to the group. If you are dancing and/or have danced in your recent or even distant past, please join us and keep on dancing forever. Wear comfortable clothing. Flexible shoes or stockings or bare feet are suggested. For more information, call (352) 273-0880. Parkinson’s Exercise Programs –

Every Tuesday and Friday at 9:30 AM: This program is specifically tailored to “Persons with Parkinson’s” (PWP). It is designed to help overcome physical limitations, improve mobility, flexibility and balance, restore confidence and develop camaraderie among participants. The program is 75-90 minutes in duration and includes both sitting and standing exercise routines. Participants with limited mobility should be accompanied by their caregiver. Please wear comfortable clothing (shorts, tee-shirt, and athletic shoes).

Every Tuesday at 1:15-2:00 PM: This is a 45 minute exercise class that is held each week for person’s with Parkinson’s Disease, of all skill levels. The first 15 minutes of each class focuses on flexibility. The remaining 30 minutes of class focuses on various types of exercises. Each week the exercise will be different. The type of exercises provided include: balance, core strengthening, upper body resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, coordination, lower body strengthening, adaptive sport games, and cognitive challenges. Everyone is encouraged to participate at their

own pace. Chairs are available for those who prefer to exercise sitting or for anyone needing a rest. We welcome people who are able to walk in unassisted, those who use walkers or canes and those who use wheelchairs.

Tai Chi Classes–

Tai Chi Sequel: “Tai Chi Sequel”, what is it? An opportunity for those students who have taken the Tai Chi Quan to practice the eight forms learned in the “Tai Chi for Better Balance” class and to learn new variations. Practicing this art increases flexibility and balance. Join us for on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00- 1:00 PM to continue your practice of Tai Chi Quan.

Yoga – Yoga class is held every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 10:00 - 11:15 AM. Yoga is rejuvenating, relaxing, and non-competitive. Yoga postures

improve strength, balance, and flexibility, while yoga breathing promotes concentration, oxygenation, and better circulation. You will need to wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat. If you are just beginning, or have forgotten your yoga mat, loaner mats are available at the front desk of the Senior Center. No special shoes are required since yoga is done barefoot. Please try to be on time so that you will hear all opening

instructions and be properly warmed up for class. If you are a first-time student, please check in with the teacher before class. The Zumba Gold Fitness program is second to none. It is an innovative, fun and exciting program. It was designed for the active older adult. The main difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba Basic is Zumba Gold is done at a lower intensity, not as fast, but it certainly is as fun. A medical waiver is required to participate in Zumba. This can be picked up at the front desk. A physician’s signature may be required on this waiver prior to participation. *Monday’s Zumba class is sponsored by Forest Meadows Funeral Home & Cemeteries, Inc, Wednesday’s class is sponsored by Fletcher Johnson Insurance, and Friday’s class is sponsored by ElderCare of Alachua County.

Games/Entertainment

Bid Whist - Bid Whist is a partnership trick-taking variant of the classic card game whist. Bid Whist adds a bidding element to the game that is not present in classic whist. Four people play in partnerships of two against two. Come play a friendly game of Bid Whist! All levels of card players are welcome. Games will be held on Fridays from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM. The Alachua County Library District will provide assistance with learning to use eBook and digital devices on the bookmobile. A digital services librarian will be there to answer one-on-one questions concerning your Kindle, Nook, iPad, or any reading device you bring with you. Bridge Groups –

Chess Club – Chess Club meets every Wednesday. Chess instruction is from 9:30 - 10:45 AM & Game Play is from 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM. “Learn to Play Exceptional Chess” Instructional time will be held for 1 hour followed by Chess play after. Learn chess principles, chess notion, chess ideas, pawn structure, opening strategies, middle game strategies, end game strategies, devastating moves & attacks, and chess traps, swindles and pitfalls (how to make and avoid them). Salsa Dancing – Learn to move with the rhythm of the music and get in some great exercise! No rules except have fun! Salsa dancing is taught by a native of Venezuela and Latin dancer. Salsa dancing is

held every Wednesday at 3:00 PM. We look forward to seeing you there!

Rummikub – Join friends for a fun game of Rummikub, a tile based game ideal for 2 or more players. A great combination of strategy and luck makes Rummikub the perfect game for all ages. Rummikub is held every Wednesday from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the SRC. Scrabble Club – Come in Friday afternoons to enjoy a game of scrabble with some new friends! If you have a board please feel free to bring it with you (if you do not own one, there are some available for use). Scrabble Club meets every Friday from 1:00 – 4:00 PM.

Swing and Sway Dance Club – On Sunday, May 17th between 3:00-5:00 PM the Swing and Sway Dance Club will host a social and dance at the Senior Recreation Center. Mr. October will sing, dance and provide DJ music for dancing and listening. Admission will be $7.50 per person and all adults are invited. The Swing and Sway Dance club provides a music filled atmosphere for dancing, listening and socializing. You don’t need a partner and even if you don’t dance you can come and enjoy a wide variety of music, socialize, or just watch the fun. You may bring finger food, snacks and beverages for yourself or to share with others (if you wish bring wine and beer, but please drink responsibly). Otherwise cookies, coffee, tea, water, and ice will be provided. The Swing and Sway Dance Club is a non-profit activity and all its officers and associates are non-paid volunteers. Funds received at these dances are used to pay for music and overhead.

Informational Programs & Support Groups

AARP Monthly Meeting – The AARP monthly meeting will be held on Monday,

May 4th at 10:00 AM. The speaker this month is Carolyn Lukert, Memory Support

Liaison at the Village in Gainesville. Carolyn has an extensive background in

human resources management and employee training & development. She holds

an MBA, is a Certified Senior Advisor, and is currently participating in UF’s

Graduate Certificate Program in Geriatric Care Management. Carolyn is qualified

as a ‘Dementia Care Provider’ by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

AARP Driving Safety Class – Wednesday, May 20th 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Open

to all seniors 55 and over, the objectives of this course include: understanding

the effects of aging on driving, learning defensive driving strategies aimed

at reducing crash risks, updating knowledge of road rules, and increasing

confidence and maintaining independence. The cost is $15 for AARP

members and $20 for non-members. The Certificate of Completion from

this course provides for a 3-year auto insurance discount. There are no tests

New Member Orientation – “New Member Orientation” is for all who are new to the Senior Recreation Center or those who are interested in learning more about the SRC, ElderCare of Alachua County, and our programs. Please join us for an informative look at the organization and its role in the Gainesville community. This month’s orientation will be held Wednesday, May 13th at 9:00 AM. Registration is required; please call (352) 265-9040 prior to the orientation.

PrimeTime Institute (PTI) PTI provides a wide variety of educational programs and social activities for

people age 50+ that foster wellness, encourage personal and intellectual growth and that provide an environment for developing new interests, making new

friends and becoming involved volunteers. All PTI programs and activities are planned and presented entirely by volunteer members and speakers, with expenses supported by membership fees ($20 for Sept. 2014-Aug. 2015) and donations. You do not have to be a PTI member to attend our educational programs. A small donation is appreciated from non-

Thursday, May 7th – Seniors vs. Crime. Barbara Thomas, Regional Director for the Seniors vs Crime Program, a special project of the Florida Attorney General, will present information about this program which has been successful in assisting thousands of seniors. They offer direct services to seniors who may have been victimized or otherwise taken advantage of by businesses or service providers. Discussion will include warning signs and precautions to avoid becoming a victim.

Tuesday, April 12th – Understanding Our Death Care Choices. Freddie Johnson, Executive Director and one of the founders of Conservation Burial, Inc., will identify the environmental, financial & emotional consequences of our conventional death care choices and provide information about the various options available today. He’ll explain how

and why conventional choices came about, and what some alternative choices, such as “green burial,” and more “traditional” methods of death care have to offer.

Thursday, May 14th – PrimeTime Institute Annual Picnic at the City of Gainesville San Felasco Park (off NW 43rd St.) We’ll gather at 11 AM and eat at 11:30. PTI will provide the hot dogs and hamburgers. Sign up at a PTI meeting and indicate whether you will bring a side dish, dessert, or other items, such as beverages, buns, condiments, paper goods, or cups. Watch for a flyer with further information and directions to the park.

Tuesday, May 19th – Visiting Yellowstone in Winter and the United Kingdom in Spring. Two PrimeTime members will share pictures and tales of their travels. Cynthia Karle had a recent trip to Yellowstone, when no cars were allowed, but snow coaches and snowmobiles let visitors enjoy the wonders of our first National Park in winter. Last year, Prue Tucker revisited places where she’d spent time in 1962, including her grandmother’s birthplace in Cornwall, London, Stratford, and the Lake District.

Thursday, May 28th – Healthy Weight: What is it and how do I get there? Dr. Pete Sarantos, of North Florida Regional Medical Center, will provide a medical overview on the prevalence, causes and risks of obesity. He will also present a tool that will help individuals determine their own ideal weight and discuss a variety of options such as diets, medications and surgical procedures that can assist in achieving a healthy weight.

Please call (352) 265-9040 to register for all courses below. Apple Users Group: All About Photos iPhones and iPads are a great way to take photos but are you making use of all their abilities? This class will cover all the aspects of the camera feature of your iDevice: taking, saving and sharing your photos, apps you can use to improve subpar photos, add special effects, digitize and enhance your 40 –year-old prints, and get prints made. Bring your device. Please have your iOS up to date. (Currently iOS 8.2)

you would like because it is too mystifying, this course can help you understand

what's going on. This course is intended for users who want to get more familiar

with the basics. Bring your iDevice and all your user names and passwords.

We'll explore the basic operations and try to de-mystify it for you. This is a

hands-on class and topics will vary based on class needs.

Spanish Class – Learn a new language and enjoy socialization! Spanish class is held every Wednesday from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. Class size limited to 20. Please call the SRC at (352) 265-9040 to register. Stroke Victors & Caregiver Support Group – We meet every Thursday from

3:30 - 5:00 PM at the Senior Recreation Center. This is a group for stroke

victors and their caregivers to encourage and support one another in their quest

to find a new normal after suffering a stroke. Our goal is to be a one-stop place to

get information about strokes for those in our community. We have the support of

UF Shands Rehab Hospital that comes to facilitate on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of

General Information

The Senior Recreation Center is located at 5701 NW 34th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32653 and is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. All classes are FREE to any resident of Alachua County 60+, unless otherwise noted. In addition to these classes we always have a game room, computer room, and fitness center which are all open to members during regular business hours.

The Fitness Center is offered to Alachua County Residents 55+ for $63.60 annually [prorated from the time of registration] which includes working with our Fitness Supervisor who is there to assist members from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM daily. A medical waiver is required to use the fitness center. This waiver can be picked up at the front desk. A physician’s signature may be required on this waiver prior to participation.

We offer Subway To-Go lunches for $5 per box. Boxed meals consist of

a regular 6” cold sub, chips and a cookie. All served individually with a mayo/mustard packet, napkin and a mint inside a stackable box. You may choose Black Forest Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, Tuna or Veggie Delight. Served on white or wheat bread with American cheese, lettuce, tomato,

and pickles. We do ask that you eat at the multipurpose room tables or a classroom - not in the general seating areas or carpeted rooms. Please call the Senior Center at (352) 265-9040 the day prior to place your order. Each box is $5 and we are only accepting cash at this time. Correct change is appreciated.
