In a world of automation, abstract ideas and multiple screens, it’s often the things we learn, do, and create by hand that forge the greatest impact on our lives. 2018 was a year of tremendous change for our organization. It was also a chance to focus on what BSA is all about. Instilling lifelong values. Teaching real-world survival skills. Sharing what we know. Providing opportunities to grow.

Thousands of amazing stories emerge annually from the young men and women of Seneca Waterways Council. In this report we shine the spotlight on four remarkable Scouts reaching for (and achieving) ambitious goals. It’s hard work.

Each Scout leverages the tools at hand – a curious mind, a disciplined body, abundant information, along with family, teachers, coaches, leaders and friends.

Executive LetterPeople see Scouts in a number of ways—they are the young people who hold their hands up to salute the flag … they lend helping hands wherever they can … and they hand off the traditions of Scouting to the next generation. In Scouting, as in life, hands are powerful symbols as well as meaningful illustrations of human action.

The functions of our hands are akin to the timeless values taught by the Scouting movement, and their physical power reflects the countless productive lessons that young people take from Scouting into the rest of their lives.

As we produce tomorrow’s decision-makers, generation after generation, we are continually providing a hand up to service and opportunity.

Clean or dirty, gloved or bare, the hands of Scouts improve the world in thousands of ways every day.

Scouting creates better citizens in all walks of life. People who follow the Scout Oath and Scout Law consistently are among the most productive hands in society.

We ask you to take a close look at this annual report. It’s not just a snapshot of Seneca Waterways Council activities in 2018, it’s an illustration of the potential of every youth member who participates in our many programs. Hold this in your hands, and reflect on the impact of Scouting in our communities.

Yours in Scouting,

Lewis Heisman Christopher Schulitz Stephen HoittCouncil President Council Commissioner Scout Executive/CEO
