The alga that wants to be an animal
Dr. J. Rudi Strickler
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, United States of America
Divendres, 20 de gener de 2017
Summary
Chaetoceros coarctatum Lauder, 1864, is the platform of Vorticella oceanica Zacharias, 1906 (Ciliophora:
Peritrichia) or similar ciliates. While most researchers observed the alga in the microscope where the alga could not
move, we did so with an updated version of the microscope by Filippo Bonanni’s (see Observationes circa Viventia,
Quae in Rebus Non Viventibus Reperiuntur. p. 28. Rome, 1691). The results of these observations highlight the
whole question of diffusion limited supply of nutrients to large algae. And they intersect with Margalef’s mandala
enlarging the range of questions to be investigated for further understanding of the “sociology” of planktonic
communities. This talk is the result of many scientists wondering about large diatoms.
Brief biography
J. Rudi Strickler’s work in imaging microscopic aquatic zooplankters as they navigate and manipulate their
watery habitats has reversed previous scholarship that asserted the tiny creatures survived by chance encounters. His
research proved the tiny transparent relatives of shrimp, which populate both the sea and freshwater by the
sextillions, act selectively in choosing their food, avoiding predators, and successfully pursuing a mate. It has
redirected the course of inquiry in the field. Strickler, a UWM and Shaw Distinguished Professor of biological
sciences, has accomplished much of the work with the aid of high-speed video with optical systems he often has
designed himself. His savvy use of laser beams, animated GIFs files and high-magnification equipment has allowed
him to track and compare the behavior of copepods, the main constituent of zooplankton. In 2000, the National
Science Foundation recognized Strickler in its bound report, “50 Years of Ocean Discovery,” citing his research on
zooplankton as one of four landmark achievements in biological oceanography. Nine years later, he was recognized
by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) with the John Martin Award for research
published in 1981 with Mimi Koehl, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The award is reserved for
papers at least 10 years old that have led to fundamental shifts in subsequent research.

Dr. Albert Palanques
Departament de Geociències Marines, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 27 de gener de 2017
Resum

A dia d’avui he publicat vint-i-tres articles que descriuen unes vint noves espècies, vuit gèneres
També he assistit i fet presentacions a
diferents congressos, destacant el Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans. He actuat també

EukaryOcean: The impact of eukaryotic cells on the global ocean
symbiome(s)
Dr. Colomban de Vargas
Station Biologique de Roscoff, France
Divendres, 10 de febrer de 2017
Summary
Ecosystems are self-organized networks of interacting biota (viruses, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes) with
complex ecological and evolutionary dynamics across a wide range of organizational, spatial, and time scales. In this
seminar, I will discuss how eukaryotic cells –or protists- may have impacted the architecture, functions, and
resilience of oxygenic ecosystems. Marine plankton, with its relative biological simplicity, extreme dynamics, and
continuous fossil record, is arguably the best natural laboratory to assess self-organization rules of a planetary biome.
On one hand, plankton sedimentary records and phylogenetics allow exploring ancient and long time scales and have
shown how the evolution of protists, through serial symbioses and irreversible ‘complexification’, can generate novel
global forces with permanent impact on the biogeochemistry of our planet. On the other hand, Tara Oceans circum-
global expeditions have generated the first holistic eco-morpho-genetic inventory of the world surface modern
plankton, allowing exploration of the boundaries of its biocomplexity from viruses to animals. Analyses of >45
Terabases of meta-omics data demonstrate the greater taxonomic and genetic bio-complexity of protists –essentially
heterotrophs- over viruses, prokaryotes and animals. We uncovered >150 million eukaryotic, mostly unknown genes,
a census far from saturation and 3X larger than the prokaryotic saturating gene repertoire. Graph analyses allowed
reconstruction of a global plankton interactome and sub-networks, demonstrating the prominence of positive biotic
interactions in controlling the highly integrated plankton symbiome(s). Protists, mostly parasites and
photosymbionts, are identified as critical agents structuring plankton networks. Now we are facing a great challenge:
how can we understand ecosystem functions of the bewildering protists diversity – mostly unculturable holobionts
(cellular ecosystem hosting viruses, prokaryotes, and other eukaryotes) with large and mosaic genomes, and
unknown physiogenomics and behaviors? To crack this ecosystems dark matter, I propose to study plankton
networks and their key-stone protist species by two complementary research lines: (i) sampling plankton at relevant
spatio-temporal scales for mathematical networks modeling through an international program of citizen sailing
Oceanography 2.0 (Plankton Planet); (ii) understanding the phenotypes of key players at the single-cell level, by
using automated 3D fluorescent microscopy and chemical imaging, linked to single-cell –omics. Future interplay
between single-cell ‘phenOmics’ and global oceans multi-omics datasets should provide critical information to
understand and integrate the eco-evolutionary success of protists in global ecology of the Earth system.

Brief biography
Colomban is a franco-swiss oceanographer, fascinated by the co-evolution between eukaryotic Life and the
Earth system. After a Master in Tahiti (1995), a PhD in Geneva (2000), a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard
University (2002), and an Assistant Professorship at Rutgers University (2005), Colomban joined the french CNRS
in 2006, where he created the EPEP – Evolution des Protistes et des Ecosystèmes Pélagiques- team within the
‘Groupe Plancton’. Obsessed by the dramatic diversity of forms and the cellular ‘complexification’ of protists,
Colomban has coordinated international efforts to unveil the diversity (e.g. BioMarKs, http://www.biomarks.eu/),
taxonomy (UniEuk, http://unieuk.org/), and ecosystem functions (Tara Oceans; http://www.oceanomics.eu/;
Plankton Planet; http://planktonplanet.org/), of marine protists across global organismic and spatio-temporal scales,
including paleo-oceans. Currently pushing the development of automated, high-content microscopy and single-cell –
omics technologies for aquatic ecology, Colomban believes that protists and plankton are unique models to
understand self-organisation of complex adaptive systems across various scales of organization and time.
Ode to the Eurkaryote’ painting (2011) by
Shoshanah Dubiner. The eukaryotic cell is
represented as a chimera, a cell-"paradise"
("enclosed garden" in ancient Persian). The
artist marvelously represents how the
complexity of the eukaryotic intracellular
ecosystem mirrors and has given rise to
plants and animals. Eukaryotic
symbiogenesis has shaped complex life
across 7 orders of magnitude, with major
impacts in biogeochemical cycles.

L'Odissea, un poema marítim
Ton Barnils Carrera
Director General del Centre Excursionista de Catalunya
Divendres, 17 de febrer de 2017
Resum
d’Homer.
modernitat, malgrat aparèixer fa milers d’anys.
d’imaginació i observació empírica, és molt gran.

Introduction of World Ocean Assessment I
Dr. Chul Park
Chungnam National University, Daejon, South Korea
Divendres, 24 de febrer de 2017
Summary
The first World Ocean Assessment, named as “Regular process for global reporting and assessment of the
state of the marine environment, including socio-economic aspects” was done by the United Nations (UN), and its
summary was approved by the UN General Assembly in 2015. The second cycle had begun last year. The first report
was composed of seven parts. Part 1 is the summary. Part 2 is on the context of the assessment. Part 3 deals with the
assessment of major ecosystem services from the marine environment, other than provisional services. Part 4 covers
the cross-cutting issue of food security and food safety. Part 5 is about the impact of human use of the ocean. Part 6
handles the marine biodiversity and habitats. And the final Part 7 considers the overall way in which the various
human impacts cumulatively affect the ocean and the overall benefits that humans draw from the ocean. In this talk,
the changes in marine environments due to the climate change as well as due to the human use of the ocean will be
summarized. These include the sea level rise, ocean acidification, intensified stratification etc. and their impacts on
marine ecosystem. Food security and food safety was one of the important issues, and present status will be
introduced. Then increasing inputs of harmful material and cumulative impacts of human activities on marine
biodiversities will be discussed along with status of marine biological diversities and the changes in the patterns of
them. Distribution of ocean benefits and disbenefits will be reviewed. Necessity of the integrated management and
urgency of addressing threats to the ocean will be the final part of the WOA introduction. The ways to take part in
the reporting will also be introduced.

Growth rates of marine microbes: Back to the future
Dr. David L. Kirchman
School of Marine Science and Policy, University of Delaware, United States of America
Divendres, 17 de març de 2017
Summary
The growth rate is a fundamental property of any organism and is a key parameter for evaluating the
contribution of a microbe to biogeochemical cycles. The growth rates of photoautotrophic microbes in the oceans are
on the order of 1 d-1 and are much higher than the bulk rate for heterotrophic bacteria, in contrast to the rate predicted
by the metabolic theory of ecology. The rate for heterotrophic bacteria is about 0.1 d-1 and is constrained by estimates
of bacterial biomass and growth efficiency. However, the rate for the entire bacterial community reflects a vast
diversity of organisms with growth rates ranging from 0 to >1 d-1. Estimates for one important member of this
community, the SAR11 clade, vary greatly depending on the method. Resolving the debate about SAR11 growth will
contribute to understand the population dynamics of the most abundant organism on the planet and is an example of
how growth rates can link microbial diversity with biogeochemical cycles

Synchronized transcription patterns in the N2-fixing symbiont UCYN-A
Dr. Maria del Carmen Muñoz Marín
University of Córdoba, Spain
Divendres, 31 de març de 2017
Summary
Biological nitrogen (N2) fixation is an important source of fixed nitrogen for ecosystems. However, it can
only be performed by certain Bacteria and Archaea, since the oxygen evolved by photosystem II inhibits the
nitrogenase enzyme that catalyzes N2 fixation. Most N2-fixing cyanobacteria avoid oxygen inhibition by temporally
separating the activities such us Crocosphaera and Cyanothece (which fix N2 during the dark period) or by spatially
localizing nitrogen-fixing activity in specialized cells (heterocysts). The marine nonheterocyst-forming
Trichodesmium fixes N2 during the day without specialized cells, probably due to a unique combination of spatial and
temporal separation of activities. Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa (UCYN-A) is a recently discovered
unicellular cyanobacterium that may be one of the most abundant N2-fixing cyanobacteria in the ocean. UCYN-A is
unusual since it lacks photosystem II, does not have the genes for carbon fixation, and is a symbiont of a unicellular
eukaryotic haptophyte alga. It appears to be also capable of N2 fixation during the light. We used a whole genome
array to determine if UCYN-A, with its greatly streamlined genome and lack of 2 kai genes, still maintains the diel
cycle typical of closely related unicellular cyanobacteria. We also wanted to determine if the two different
sublineages, UCYN-A1 and UCYN-A2, maintain the same cycles. Moreover, we also compared UCYN-A
transcription data to previously published data for Prochlorococcus sp. MED4 (a non- N2-fixer), Cyanothece ATCC
51142 and Crocosphaera watsonii WH 8501(unicellular N2-fixers). Moreover, we also analyzed the transcription
patterns of cultures of the N2-fixing cyanobacteria Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101 during diel cycles. The gene
transcription patterns of UCYN-A1 and UCYN-A2 were highly similar. Furthermore, our results showed the PSI
activity may be important in the energetics of N2 fixation in the symbiosis. Finally, the transcription patterns showed
possible differences with other N2 fixing cyanobacteria that may be linked to symbiosis with the haptophyte host.

it also could mean that PSI activity is advantageous in the marine environment. Many bacteria in the oceans have proteorhodopsins or anaerobic anoxygenic photosynthetic pathways67, suggesting that supplementation of energy metabolism may be more important in the marine environment than the freshwater environments where the diatom symbionts are found. UCYN-A is missing the phosphate sensor regulon (phoBR), the nitrogen regulating protein PII (glnB) and any possible ABC-type nitrate/sulfonate/bicarbonate trans-porter, relative to the E. turgida symbiont. In contrast, UCYN-A has retained the Fe III transport genes (afuABC), which must be important in the Fe-limited oligotrophic oceans. Interestingly, UCYN-A and the E. turgida spheroid body have retained the NtcA transcription regulator. NtcA is a N-regulatory transcriptional acti-vator that is required for transcription of nifH genes in the absence of ammonium in at least some N2-fixing cyanobacteria68. The lack of Amt transporters in the E. turgida spheroid body and UCYN-A may force the ntcA gene to be constitutively upregulated and involved in stimulating N2 fixation. It is also possible that NtcA in UCYN-A responds to the availability of carbon skeletons69, presumably sup-plied by the host. To have survived such extreme genome reduction,
the metabolic similarities and differences between the freshwater spheroid bodies and the marine planktonic UCYN-A must be criti-cal for selection in their unique habitats.
Symbiosis between two unicellular microorganisms requires more than just energy and metabolite exchange. N2-fixing symbi-oses in terrestrial systems between bacteria or cyanobacteria and multicellular land plants involve signalling between the N2 fixer and the host/partner, which stimulates cell division and allows infection and formation of nodules or nodule-like structures4. The require-ments for N2-fixing symbiosis evolution in multicellular plants are not entirely understood4. Presumably, unicellular systems must involve much simpler signal transduction pathways and cellular development or modifications. Coordination of growth and divi-sion must be carefully coordinated between two unicellular cells, otherwise one will outgrow the other. Although the numbers of N2-fixing symbionts per host may partially depend on the degree of N deficiency, as was observed in Rhopalodia70, the numbers of cells of both partners have to divide in synchrony so as to pass on the partnership to daughter cells following mitotic division.
UCYN-A and evolutionAs well as being ecologically significant, the UCYN-A symbiosis is an intriguing model of microbial interactions, particularly the unicellular interactions that may be similar to events in the early evolution of organelles55. Non-N2-fixing interactions involving plas-tids range across a spectrum from grazing and retention of plas-tids (kleptoplastids) and loose interactions71,72, to the very specific interactions of organelles (including chloroplasts)73. Many plastids have evolved as a secondary endosymbiosis of a unicellular alga that harbours a chloroplast originally derived from a cyanobacterium. The protist Paulinella has incorporated an endosymbiotic cyano-bacterium and appears to be an example of an intermediate associa-tion that is on an evolutionary trajectory to becoming a plastid63. Some of the characteristics believed to be associated with endos-ymbiosis are genome reduction and transfer of genes to the host nuclear genome through endosymbiotic gene transfer (EGT)74,75. The Paulinella chromatophore has had extensive genome reduction and transferred at least 30 genes to the host genome76,77. Most of these EGT-derived genes are related to photosynthesis, including components of the PSI reaction centere76.
The UCYN-A genome is very small with short intergenic regions and pseudogenes displaying the properties of endosymbiont genome reduction54 [Au: please clarify, does the UCYN-A genome display these properties, or the pseudogenes? The current punctuation leaves this unclear]. Genome comparisons among UCYN-A1, the E. turgida spheroid body and the Paulinella chromatophore showed that 47% of the UCYN-A1 protein-encoding genes are shared with both of the other endosymbionts (core proteins) and another 44% are shared with at least one of the endosymbiont genomes (Fig. 5).
The diatom spheroid bodies are considered obligate endosym-bionts, as they are inseparable from the host cells and are synchro-nized and passed on to daughter cells during host cell division65,78. The Paulinella chromatophore divides synchronously with the amoeboid host, suggesting a certain level of host–endosymbiont integration79. It is still unknown how UCYN-A attaches to the host, or if the UCYN-A division is orchestrated by the eukaryote (Fig. 4). However, a few micrographs have been observed that show two UCYN-A1 cells per host right before sunset, which suggests that the cyanobacteria UCYN-A divide before the host42.
The distinctions between endosymbiont and organelle have long been debated. One accepted characteristic used to distinguish between organelles (plastid) and endosymbionts is the presence of a double membrane in organelles and the importing of proteins75,80 (Fig. 6). Most organellar proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and translated by host ribosomes, whereas in endosymbionts all of the cytosolic proteins are encoded its own genome. It has not yet been

Historical changes of the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem: modelling the
role and impact of primary productivity and fisheries over time
Dr. Chiara Piroddi
Departament de Recursos Marins Renovables, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 7 d'abril de 2017
Summary
The Mediterranean Sea has been defined “under siege” because of intense pressures from multiple human
activities; yet there is still insufficient information on the cumulative impact of these stressors on the ecosystem and
its resources. This work evaluates how the historical (1950-2011) trends of various ecosystems groups/species have
been impacted by changes in primary productivity (PP) combined with fishing pressure for the whole Mediterranean
Sea using a food web modelling approach. Results indicate that both changes in PP and fishing pressure played an
important role in driving species dynamics. Yet, PP was the strongest driver upon the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem.
This highlights the importance of bottom-up processes in controlling the biological characteristics of the region.
Overall, there was a reduction in abundance of important fish species (~34%, including commercial and non-
commercial) and top predators (~41%), and increases of the organisms at the bottom of the food web (~23%).
Ecological indicators, such as community biomass, trophic levels, catch and diversity indicators, reflect such changes
and show overall ecosystem degradation over time. Since climate change and fishing pressure are expected to
intensify in the Mediterranean Sea this study constitutes a baseline reference for stepping forward in assessing the
future management of the basin.
Brief biography
Chiara Piroddi is marine scientist and an ecosystem modeller with more than 10 years of experience in
studying marine ecosystem dynamics, structures and associated anthropogenic impacts with a special focus on
marine processes and functions of the Mediterranean Sea. Her work deals with modelling 1) marine ecosystems

Resum

Dra. Esther Garcés
Departament de Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 12 de maig de 2017
Resum
funcionament.

Dr. Ken H. Andersen
Centre for Ocean Life, DTU Aqua, Denmark
Divendres, 28 d'abril de 2017
Summary
The size of an individual organism is a key trait to characterize its physiology and feeding ecology, often
through power-law relationships. However, such size-based scaling laws may have a limited size range of validity or
undergo a transition from one scaling exponent to another at some characteristic size. I review size-based scaling
laws for resource acquisition, mobility, sensory range, and progeny size for all pelagic life in the ocean, from
bacteria to whales. Further, I develop simple theoretical arguments for observed scaling laws and the characteristic
sizes of a change or breakdown of power laws. The characteristic sizes of a change are used to divide life in the
ocean into seven major realms based on trophic strategy, physiology, and life history strategy. Such a categorization
represents a move away from a taxonomically oriented description toward a trait-based description of life in the
oceans. Finally, I will discuss life forms that transgress the simple size-based rules and identify unanswered
questions.
Brief biography
I have a background in theoretical physics. Currently I hold a professorship in theoretical marine ecology.
My research interests are to understand how life in the ocean is organised, why marine organisms look and act the
way they do, and how marine ecosystems react to perturbations like fishing, species removals/invasions or climate
change.

Marine viruses - small but important
Dr. Ruth-Anne Sandaa
University of Bergen, Norway
Dijous, 15 de juny de 2017
Summary
Viruses are the most numerous and diverse biological entities in the oceans and they are important for
biogeochemical cycling and structuring of microbial communities. Not only do viral infection and lysis influence the
structure of prokaryote and eukaryote communities, it also control the partitioning of nutrient fluxes “up” the food
chain via predation and “down” the food chain to the pool of dissolved organic material (DOM). Viruses also have
the ability to influence the life history and evolution of the host community by acting as major conduits of genetic
exchange. I will in this talk discuss viral diversity in the marine environment, and link viral activity to its function on
both the prokaryotic and eukaryotic (phytoplankton) host communities. I will also discuss how abundance and
activity of viruses and their heterotrophic prokaryotic hosts may be linked to trophic cascades initiated in the
predator food chain in the marine microbial food web by combining results from mesocosm experiment with
mathematical modelling.

The role of diatoms in primary production and silicon biogeochemistry
in Arctic and Sub-Arctic Oceans
Dr. Diana Varela
University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canadà
Dimarts, 20 de juny de 2017
Summary
During this talk, Dr. Varela will address spatial and temporal patterns in phytoplankton production and
nutrient concentrations in the Arctic and sub-Arctic marine waters surrounding North America. Results from
International Polar Year and other research projects (e.g. GEOTRACES, Distributed Biological Observatory)
conducted during the last decade show that phytoplankton production in marine Arctic waters is highly variable from
region to region, with hotspots of activity in the Chukchi Sea, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and Baffin Bay.
These high production sectors markedly contrast with the oligotrophic waters of the Canada Basin. Dr. Varela will
zoom into those Arctic hotspots and describe the role of diatoms in phytoplankton production and nutrient cycling in
the pan-Canadian Arctic from the sub-Arctic Pacific to the sub-Arctic Atlantic Oceans. She will present results from
experimental manipulations using the radioactive 32Si isotope and a novel fluorescent probe (PDMPO dye) as tracers
of diatom production in surface waters, and from natural variations in silicon isotopes (δ30Si) measured throughout
the water column as indicators of diatom production and water mass distribution.
Brief biography
Dr. Diana Varela is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Victoria (Victoria, B.C., Canada),
with a joint position in the Department of Biology and the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Her educational
background includes a ‘Licenciatura’ (equivalent to a Bachelor in Science Honours) in Biology and Oceanography at
the ‘Universidad Nacional del Sur’ in Argentina, a Master of Arts from the Boston University Marine Program

natural communities, and on to a much broader oceanographic scale using natural isotopes as tracers of marine
biogeochemical processes. While her lab’s work is mainly dedicated to fundamental research, they have also
collaborated with industry and academic partners on applied projects. These team efforts were aimed at optimizing
light systems in large-size bioreactors for aquaculture use, and assessing CO2 capture and production of value
products in cyanobacteria. Dr. Varela has extensive field experience in oceanographic expeditions to the Arctic,
Antarctic, North and Equatorial Pacific, and North and South Atlantic Oceans.

Fish and climate change: a genomics perspective
Dr. David Hurwood
Queensland University of Technology, Australia
Divendres, 30 de juny de 2017
Summary
Potential effects of climate change have become a central consideration in managing aquatic populations,
both for exploitation and/or conservation of marine and freshwater taxa. While specific effects of climate change are
going to be expressed differently among inland and marine species, in general we are now seeing an increasing
number of documented instances of: i) changes to the abundance and recruitment; ii) shifts in species ranges; iii)
changes to dispersal opportunities and timing of migrations; iv) novel species interactions, etc. Predicting population
dynamics in the face of climate change is problematic due to the intrinsic variation in species-specific life history
traits as well as the underlying architecture of respective genomes. A genomics approach for investigating the basis
for adaptive response to the effects of climatic fluctuations now offers opportunities to gain insight into the short-
medium term persistence of populations.
Brief biography
David Hurwood is a Senior Lecturer in the Science and Engineering Faculty at the Queensland University
of Technology, Australia. He completed his PhD in 2001 at Griffith University in Molecular Ecology and has
subsequently spent the last 15 years developing population genetics, research in aquatic systems, applying these
approaches to wild and cultured populations of various fish and crustacean taxa. In recent years, this research has
expanded to incorporate genomic technologies. Among other projects, our research group is currently applying a
genomics approach to: i) improve growth and productivity in aquaculture species; ii) investigate the genetic basis for
adaptation of crustaceans to freshwater from a marine ancestry; iii) understanding species and speciation.

Mesopelagic fishes and prokaryotes: food for thought
Dr. Xosé Anxelu G. Morán
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia
Divendres, 14 de juliol de 2017
Summary
The recent finding that mesopelagic fish biomass is one order of magnitude higher than previously thought
has boosted studies about their role in ocean biogeochemical cycles. Diel vertical migrations of these small fishes
represent a rapid, massive transfer of organic matter to impoverished mesopelagic layers during daytime. However,
its effect on heterotrophic bacteria and archaea remains unknown. A series of experiments conducted at one 700 m
deep station in the central Red Sea suggest that mesopelagic fishes represent an important food source for
heterotrophic prokaryotes inhabiting the 450-550 m layer. We have documented dissolved organic carbon (DOC)
consumption rates of up to 5 µmol L-1 d-1 in parallel to sustained increases in heterotrophic prokaryotes biomass
during short-term incubations. Mesopelagic microbes were significantly larger than their counterparts from shallower
depths and they also showed higher growth efficiencies, indicating the existence of labile organic compounds.
Dissolved organic matter C:N ratios and fluorescent properties do not support the contention that deep stocks are
uniformly refractory. Incubations conducted in different seasons and at different times of the diel cycle (i.e. noon vs.
midnight, and monitoring the fish arrival at sunrise) together with transplantation experiments consistently support
the existence of previously overlooked DOC hotspots that may change our view of the functioning of microbial food
webs in the twilight ocean.

Redox potential, not phototrophy, drives functional stratification
amongst novel organisms in boreal lakes
Dr. Sari Peura
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden
Friday, 1 December 2017
Summary
Autotrophic processes sustain all ecosystems. The main energy source for this process is sun light, and
major biomes like surface oceans and boreal forests are net autotrophic. Thus, total carbon fixation within the
ecosystem exceeds respiration, making them net carbon sinks. However, certain habitats, such as boreal lakes, are
light limited and hypothesized to be net heterotrophic. Here we show that autotrophy through phototrophic and
lithotrophic pathways facilitates carbon fixation in a boreal lake even below the euphotic zone. A vertical transect of
the lake revealed multiple chemolithoautotrophic organisms belonging to novel or poorly characterized phyla
deriving their energy from reactions related to sulfur, iron and nitrogen transformations. Lithoautotrophic pathways
were highly abundant through the water column and the chemical stratification was linked to energy pathways
predicted from metagenome assembled genomes. This suggests that photoautotrophic pathways may not be the sole
or dominant autotrophic pathway prevalent in boreal lakes as currently thought. Further, the high autotrophic
potential in the lake metagenome below euphotic zone suggests the need for revising our concepts of internal carbon
cycling in boreal lakes.
Brief biography
Dr. Peura is an Associate Senior Lecturer and a SciLifeLab Fellow in the Department of Forest Mycology
and Plant Pathology at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sweden). Her research interests include aquatic
microbial ecology and biogeochemical cycles in combination with climate change. To study these Dr. Peura is
combining molecular methods with environmental data for a comprehensive understanding of the interactions
between microbes and their environment. Dr. Peura did her graduate work at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland)
and finished her PhD in 2012. In 2013, after a postdoc period at the University of Michigan (USA), she got funding
from the Academy of Finland to start her own research at the Uppsala University. She started at her current position
2017 and her research is funded by Science for Life Laboratories and Swedish research agency FORMAS.

Plankton, benthos and beyond: the fascinating linkage between marine
invertebrate diversity and plate kinematics
Dr. Pedro Cermeño

Summary
Each day, more than a hundred million tons of carbon in the form of CO2 are fixed into organic material by
marine phytoplankton. A significant fraction of this organic carbon is transferred into the deep ocean, creating a
deficit of CO2 in the upper layer which is compensated by the diffusive drawdown of CO2 from the atmosphere. On
geological time scales, this mechanism, referred to as the biological pump, has contributed to reduce atmospheric
CO2 levels and cool the climate. After a brief overview of phytoplankton physiology and ecology, I will propose the
possibility of intervening in Earth's climate by accelerating the slow natural processes through which marine
phytoplankton, chiefly diatoms, contributed to ancient planetary cooling.
In the second part of this presentation, I will show evidence linking the diversity dynamics of marine
invertebrates through the Phanerozoic (542 million years ago - present) to plate tectonics and kinematics. This
fascinating causal relationship suggests that the time elapsed between the formation and destruction of ocean basins
influences the diversity dynamics of marine invertebrates and may have contributed to constrain their diversification.

Figure. Schematic depiction of the novel hypotheses put forward by this proposal. (A-C) Seafloor spreading and
subduction of the ocean crust at an active margin. The speed of plate movements, depicted by the frequency of
arrows, controls the age of the seafloor [colour code from red (recent) to blue (aged)]. From top to bottom, the
slowdown of seafloor spreading increases the time elapsed between the formation and obliteration of ocean basins,
allowing more time for diversification and vice versa. (D-F) Convergent plate boundaries can also exist between two
ocean plates if one plate is older than the other and convergence brings the two together. From top to bottom, the
slowdown of plate movements controls the rate of crustal deformation and, as a consequence, the loss rate of benthic
habitats. Notations as in A-C.
