New Registration SystemYOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS!!!Recreation and Leisure Services will be switching to an entirely new online registration system modelled on the system used by Surrey Parks and Recreation. Families will set up an account, register and pay online for all programs. However, families who are unable to pay online and/or would like to set up a pre authorized payment plan, must contact the program manager at 604-536-1242 (255) prior to registration day. If you are using Autism Intervention dollars, you must also contact the program manager prior to registration.

The link to set up your account will be posted and available on our Semiahmoo House Society website on Wednesday, November 27th. It is advised that to save time on registration day, families set up their online account prior to registration on Tuesday, December 17th.

We are pleased to announce that your online account will now collect all the information we ask you to update on forms we email to you each and every year. Now, if you have any changes you can make them to your account and your information is automatically updated for the Rec and Leisure team.

We would like to assure you that the system is very straightforward and easy to use. All registrations from this point forward will be online. If you need assistance registering for the fi rst time, please set up an appointment with the Rec and Leisure team and we‛ll be happy to walk you through the process.

Fall and some exciting highlights!Rec & Leisure has had an amazing fall semester filled with wonderful new programs, a great trip to Whistler and a sold-out groovin dance with a Greasy staff team! Plus, the team has seen a few changes and expansions. All staff should be commended for always having their hearts in the program and planning exceptionally great activities. Coming up... on Dec 1st, 43 of us are heading to Disney On Ice to see some of our favourite princesses!

This semester the staff team have been teaching and highlighting the importance of appreciation for who and what we have in our lives. Several participants have gone above and beyond to raise funds for families in our program that are experiencing challenging times. Keep up the great work everyone! It’s important to give back!

Team ‘The Lucky Ones’ represented Semiahmoo House Society as they crushed 21K on November 3rd at the Boundary Bay half marathon. Teammates Stacey Kohler and Julie Thiele trained for 3 months toprepare for this challenging run! The ladies came in at just under 2:15! “Friends for life,” was announced as they crossed the finish line!

Beginners Photography Club

Our photography club this semester had a blast learning how to use professional cameras and capture beautiful scenes within the White Rock and South Surrey area. Participants spent part of the class learning about unique ways to capture light and shadow, use perspective and exposure and how to take portraits. The rest of the class was out and about in the community taking pictures of everything from benches, beaches, dogs, train tracks and fall leaves. What they produced was a portfolio of pictures so beautiful and breathtaking that we put them together into a gorgeous calendar that captured their very best shots. This was our very fi rst and very successful photography class and we are excited to see what amazing shots the future members of the Photography Club will produce!

Bhangra DanceThis year our dance class started something new, Bhangra! This type of dance is a combination of traditional folk dance and dance styles from the Punjab region. The music is energetic and fl owing and the class fuses traditional bhangra music with contemporary hip-hop and rock. With most of the class trying bhangra for the fi rst time it was exciting seeing participants moving their entire bodies in special twists and turns, hops and jumps. Going to the beat of the music, participants have been practicing counting the notes, patience and teamwork while having a lot of fun! Our costumes and dance routines are going to be extraordinary and we can’t wait to show them off at this year’s Extravaganza! We hope to see you there!

Local Leisure Daze

What an awesome semester! We added this summer day camp favourite into a weekly semester program because it was so popular over the years. It has been amazing seeing everyone so involved in the process of planning, learning, problem solving and transiting to the destinations. Participants learned the basics of how to plan their trip to popular destinations in the community like Crescent Beach, Grandview Corners, Ocean Park and Surrey Central. Everything from paper schedules, online schedules, time-tabling and budgeting their fares was explored. All were given the chance to choose or contribute their own destination as well as be the leader for the group that day. This program really showed us how enthusiastic, eager to learn and be independent everyone was. Great job to all who participated and keep taking transit!

Whistler 2013Wow! This must have been the most EPIC Whistler trip of all time! Nearly 40 participants came on this year’s trip!. Why was it so epic you ask? Well, we tried a whole bunch of new and awesome things like Zip lining through the mountains, hot-tubbing it at the Scandinave Spa, as well as lodging at a Mansion aka ‘The Wrecking Pad’ where we had a pool table, a hot tub that lit up different colours, 3 big-screen TVs and a bumpin’ sound system! Of course we also tore up the dance fl oor at Buffalo Bills, shopped ‘til we dropped and had a pizza party where we played twister! There were a lot of new faces on the Whistler trip this year too, and it was amazing seeing everyone having a blast, making new friends and trying new things!

Halloween Much Music Video Dance

How is it even possible to make our dances more amazing? Have Much Music Video Dance host our dance!! Man, can they bring the party! Two awesome DJs, a GIANT big screen and multi-coloured fl ashing lights really got the party started at this year’s Halloween Scream Dance. Add in the creepy haunted house with the talking witches head, the games room where we had mummy-wrapping contests and multiple costume prizes. This years dance really blew our past ones out of the water! Be sure to get tickets to our Sweet Heart Valentine’s Dance in February where the Much Video Dance will be rockin’ the fl oor once again!

Friday Flix Drop-In

It’s a Wrap! This year’s Friday Flix Drop-In is putting a new spin on our concession items. The Se-miahmoo House catering crew has been putting together delicious wraps with wholesome ingredients for us. Encouraging healthy food options is defi nitely a priority for us, and while we still offer the goodies (because, let’s admit it, everyone loves chocolate and chips!), we are proud to be serving more variety of delicious and nutritious food options like wraps, lightly salted-popcorn, whole-grain and baked chips, fruit juices and bottled water. Have suggestions on what kinds of wraps you like, or additional healthy snacks? Let a Rec and Leisure staff know!
