This is a selection of some of the biggest roads in Selly Oak,

however, there are many more that students live on.

Distances are taken from Google maps and from a mid-distance

on the road to the Aston Webb Building on Edgbaston campus.

Crime data is taken from police.co.uk/crime and is found by

adding the total crime for each month on a particular road for

every month of the year 2012.

Quotes are provided by a selection of current students who live

on the roads displayed in this article.

Selly Oak Agony

First of all, don’t worry! A lot of people will be in the same posi-tion. The trickiest thing about living in halls is that you don’t choose who to live with. There are plenty of solutions to help. First of all, go along to one of the mixer events which are run by the Student Mentors. The next one is on March 14th in Lower Rios (based in

same position.

Also, it’s always worth speaking to friends on your course or in so-

how many people are still looking for a house at this time of year! We’d also reccomend getting in touch with the VPHC James Rob-

more housing options. Email him at [email protected].

Selly Oak Society’s very own Agony Aunt gives you solutions to some of your most pressing issues. If you have any problems, issues or worries that you want our Agony Aunt to deal with, then email us at [email protected].

Selly Oak MythsBUSTED

It was almost impossible for me

which would suggest that it is equally impossible to prove. Don’t worry if you’ve chosen a house on Dawlish Road, this is simply an urban myth.

Whilst you may never experience any of these things, you will undoubtedly

hear lots of stories. Selly Oak may not be the safest place in the world but equally it is far from the most dangerous. Don’t walk around on

your own in the early hours and keep your wits about you – that way, you

should never run into trouble.

mould and damp free house and don’t settle for anything less. If your house is mouldy and/or damp when you move in, then try your best to keep the house warm. Whilst this can seem like an expensive solution it is often cheaper to turn the heating on for a couple of hours every day then only turning it on every now and again.

If you are one of those lucky students that can afford to keep a car you shouldn’t feel that you have to give it up in Selly Oak. It is

perhaps not right next to your house. If this is important for you then go for a house with a parking space.

Whilst there are quiet parts of Selly Oak, you have to remember that it can be loud in the early hours on any day

(even Sundays!). If noise is a big issue for you, then try your best to avoid liv-

ing on one of the main roads or alter-natively try to live in one of the rooms

towards the back of the house.

Moving into Selly Oak is exciting, but there are a lot of myths out there which reinforce a negative stigma on our student village. Here are some of the most common myths busted:
