AREA VI: EXTENSION AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

$he e"tension !unction o! an institution ma%es its presence !elt in the communit. Itinvolves the application o! e"isting and ne& %no&ledge and technolog and those generated in

the institution to improve the 'ualit o! li!e o! the people. $hrough the e"tension program theare empo&ered &ith appropriate %no&ledge, attitudes and s%ills. $hus, e"tension servicescater to various aspects o! the communit li!e, e.g., economic gro&th, promotion o! health,environmental management, and social trans!ormation.

$he institution plans and implements an e"tension program that is need( and client(#ased. It should have #udgetar support and other resource allocation. $he !acult mem#er orsta!! ma serve as an organi)er, !acilitator, coordinator, service provider, and change agent inthe communit.

Care!ul planning and coordination &ith other communit outreach agencies should #e

considered to avoid duplication o! services o!!ered to the clientele.

E"tension services are provided # the institution in response to the !elt needs andurgent concerns o! the communit it serves. *i%e&ise, it ta%es into consideration local, regionaland national development thrusts. $he services e"tended should #e re!lective o! theinstitution+s vision, mission, goals and o#ectives.

B. Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation

$here is an e"tension unit to coordinate a !unctional e"tension program. -ta%eholders,administration, !acult, and students are involved in the planning, implementation, monitoringand evaluation o! e"tension activities. Multi(disciplinar or multi(sectoral approach isencouraged in the conduct o! the various e"tension activities.

C. Funding and Other Resources

$he e"tension program is provided &ith a de!inite #udget to ensure its sustaina#ilit.Funds, as &ell as material and service inputs !rom the institution or !rom other agencies, arever much needed !or the implementation o! a via#le e"tension program.

D. Communit Involvement and Participation in the Institution+s Activities

A harmonious and colla#orative school(communit relationship is a maor !actor in theli!e o! an e"tension program. $he communit should #e invited to participate in the planning,implementing, monitoring and evaluation o! activities, as &ell as sourcing o! !unds and otherresources.
