    It is almost impossible to say what self confidence is

    exactly, but there are some generally accepted descriptionsof it.

    Self-confidence is an attitude that is characterized by apositive belief that you can take control of your life and ofyour plans. It is a belief in your abilities. Confidence is thestate of being certain that a chosen course of action is the

    most effective given the circumstances.

    People who are self-confident are those who acknowledgetheir capacity to do something and then proceed to do thesethings. They do not rely on the approval of others.

    Confident: (noun) Freedom from doubt; belief in yourself and yourabilities. Confidence (or self confidence) is about beliefin yourself and your abilities, but not the absence of doubt.

    Doubts create anxiety - which sets of a physiological reaction in thebody.

    The graph below shows how performance increases (up to a point)when anxiety decreases and vice-versa.

    Exercises

    Like physical exercise, self confidence exercises are a wayof building strength. Instead of focusing on physical

    strength, these exercises build character and self-respect.

    For these self confidence exercises, you will need a specialjournal. The first exercise is at the end of each day writedown any event in which you receive positive feedback.

    You can also include in your journal memories of pastevents that you handled well.

    Negative thoughts and feelings only bring you down andlower your confidence level.

    Some people with low confidence will refuse to acceptthe compliment by saying something like, "Oh, I justthrew this outfit together, " or "It wasn't really my bestwork." Others accept the compliment on the surface butsilently counter the sentiment in their minds.
