Romans 4:1-17

No one this morning would have any trouble acknowledging that Abraham is the physical and spiritual “Father”

of the Jewish people. We might have a bit more troublethinking that he also is our spiritual “Father” (Rom. 4:11,Galatians 3:6-9). In our passage today, the Apostle Paulexplains that Abraham’s spiritual experience was like that

of people in Paul’s day (and like that of believers today).

God of Beautyn the eastern nave lies the most distant object that can be seen with the naked eye, the

dromeda galaxy, the literal limit of our sight, the border to mystery. We are seeing lightthat left the galaxy years ago. Time and space come together as we look at the stars, as weworship silently in this most massive cathedral of the summer sky. Something in us achesand hungers and is not filled even in the presence of this awesome beauty. This is more thana hunger for beauty. It is at the same time a hunger for love, for acceptance—which, if youthink about it long enough, you’ll realize is a hunger for God. For He is beautiful. To gazeupon the beauty of the Lord...(Psalm 27:4)

And that is why we hunger for beauty. Have you ever recognized your need for God inthis particular way? Have you ever contemplated one of those long theological lists of God’sattributes and concluded that He is above all beautiful? We rarely ponder His beauty, muchless seek “to gaze upon it.” Rarely does our theology include it in its outlines. But the beautyof God is a biblical reality. Validationncouragement involves validating another person’s intentions as well as their responses,howing respect and believing in them. It means purposely choosing to focus on the

person’s strengths rather than weaknesses. Expecting the best out of each person is far different from expecting perfection. When you see someone excelling at something, take time tonotice, affirm, and reinforce their achievement. But don’t begin to expect this behavior everytime. Each of us will fail and make mistakes. There is no such creature as a perfect person.

preacher and writer, was born near Bedford, England. In 1649,he married a Christian girl who led him to Christ four yearslater. Soon after, he began to preach, but at the Restorationwas arrested for preaching without a license from the Established Church. Imprisoned intermittently between 1660-72,Bunyan’s relative isolation and solitude helped him generatehis literary masterpieces: Grace Abounding to the Chief ofSinners (1666) and Pilgrim’s Progress (1678). Bunyan’stheology portrayed the world as the scene of spiritual warfare;nothing else matters except the salvation of souls.
