An argument between a mother and son erupted over a cousin who is alleged- ly a drug addict. Apparently the son, Ernest, accused his mother, Selinah Mashiqa (75), of standing up for the alleged drug addict who had turned their lives into a living hell. “Ernest fumed that I was protecting his cousin and the fami- ly was dismantled. My son and his cousin started to quarrel and he promised to kill his cousin since he was a useless addict. I asked him to kill us all because he is also old and does nothing. Then the argument flew out of control. He promised to do something unfor- givable,” says Mashiqa. On Tuesday night the neighbours were cal- led for assistance because the entire family was trapped in the house, which was on fire. Apparently the son wanted to burn the entire family and the house. The family managed to escape the fire but the house was reduced to ashes. A bystander says, “This family has been in disarray for a long time and they have been fighting constantly. It was alleged that she had lostthe key. “I was scared for her life. Shelost the key and I couldn’t break intothe house. The fire was blazing intense-ly. All I could do was also scream forhelp.” These were the words of Nombu-lelo’s younger brother Vuyisile Lewa-ne. Finally, Nombulelo was rescuedfrom the flaming house. Family andneighbours could not do much to stopthe fire as damage was done. Vuyisilesays there were no injuries to her sisterthough she was treated for trauma. “Weare glad she’s still alive. I thought shewas going to die. I would not forgivemyself if anything happened to my sis-ter. I’m still in shock,” said Vuyisile.

The younger brother further asked forcommunity assistance since there was no-one else as only the two of them are leftin the family. “Our parents have long pas-sed on. VANDERBIJLPARK. - There will - as hasbecome a norm - be no service from theEmfuleni municipal Emergency Fire andRescue from 16:00 to 18:00 and from 04:00- 06:00.

The two or three periods without essentialservices that have prevailed for two monthsare set to continue indefinitely.

Employees are using a strategy of ‘no pay,no work.’ This began over non-paymentover time and still prevails with EmfuleniLocal Municipality, ELM.

In cases of major emergency, ELM has ap-proached and appealed to the Democratic

Alliance-led Midvaal Local Municipalityand ArcelorMittal to step in. Dirk Marais, acting deputy chief of Emergency, Adminis-tration and Logistics in Emfuleni, agreedthat they have been unable to provide fullservice due to workers not willing to workovertime without pay. This has affected thesmooth operation of Services. However,Marais said contingency measures have beenput in place.

“We have reached a verbal agreementwith both Midvaal Municipality and a majorsteel company to come to our rescue whilewe are experiencing this predicament,” hesays. Two houses were reported to havecaught fire during the period when serviceswere rendered by Emfuleni.

Lehlohonolo Phahlane, manager: LabourRelations at Emfuleni Municipality, said thetwo unions - the South African Municipal

Workers Union (Samwu) and the Independ-ent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Ima-tu) - have met to come up with an amicablesolution regarding overtime. Phahlane saidthe transcription was brought in but was re-jected because the union was not satisfiedwith some of the items discussed.

No overtime, no Fire & Rescue services

Lehlohonolo Phahlane, Manager of LabourRelations at Emfuleni Local Municipalitysays the twounions are still at loggerheadswith their employer.

MEYERTON. - A suspect at large since hisalleged rape of a foreign male teenager (19)recently handed himself over to Police.

Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maz-ibuko said a case of FCS (Family Violence,Crimes against Women and Children, andSexual Offences) was opened as per investiga-tion.

The victim told Police how he was broughtinto the country with the assistance of the sus-pect.

They went to a house the suspect claimedwas his. The two went into it and he was toldto strip off his clothes.

Then he was raped. After the ordeal, thesuspect let him go, he alleged.

The victim - through the assistance of peo-ple from his country - went to open a case atthe nearest police station.

According to Constable Mazibuko, whilePolice and relatives of the victim were search-ing for the suspect, the man handed himselfover to Police. The matter is still being investi-gated, she said.

Police could not elaborate on whether thesuspect handed himself over through his law-yer, as was alleged.

Captain Shado Mashobane said the case isstill under investigation by the Provincial FCSTask Team. The Court is waiting to get an in-terpreter of the suspect’s language so it canproceed with a hearing. Once the Court re-ceives the services of an interpreter of the sus-pect’s language, the case can proceed.

Currently there are no new developmentsregarding the matter, he said.

EVATON. - The communities of Hlala-se informal settlement section nearGraceland say time is ticking fast with-out any development.

Soon they would find themselves sit-ting in the middle of the Golden High-way.

The families, whose adrenalin hasstarted pumping very fast, say they haveoccupied the empty space for more thanthree years. The land is full of big rocks, surrounded by trees, has no electricity, water or toilets and has never been de-veloped.

Most of the residents asked to remainanonymous for fear of losing thousandsof rands they paid. They say their hopeis in the hands of the Emfuleni LocalMunicipality, ELM. Hlalase is situateda few metres away from the GoldenHighway.

The communities say they have losthope in the Evaton West SiyanqobaCommunity Development Centre ledby Jacob Mhlambi, chief director andMorena Mokwena, chairperson.

In desperate fear that they would beleft behind, they said: “What we wantnow is for ELM to come up with properdevelopment.”

According to documents in the handsof Sedibeng Ster, people conceded thatthey had paid for services that nevermaterialised. They were allegedlypromised that water and sanitation

would be rendered by Emfuleni. The sales agreement document

signed by Mokwena as managementtwo years ago indicates that SiyanqobaCentre operates as an Agent for sellingthe residential sites for OCWEN In-vestments 85 (Pty) Ltd, Reg No:2000/018836/07. Terms and conditionare that an administration fee is re-quired and non-refundable.

Some of the families said they paidup to R10 000 cash for registration, pa-perwork and installation of a seweragesystem. The monies were apparentlypaid at the office of Siyanqoba Centreand to someone known as Jeff in theATM at Evaton Mall.

The families said they have builthouses according to the stands num-bered on the map.

There are people who purchaseddouble stands: “What we are waitingfor is for the municipality to installwhat has been promised.”

Bius Ntombela an alleged EmfuleniLocal Municipality worker apparentlypromised the community to informMetsi-a-Lekoa to install water pipes. This comes after one of the stand-own-ers complained that all the informalresidents collect water from her tap. Amakeshift tap has been installed aboutfive houses away from hers. There areno proper roads.

“The hopes of the community wereraised immediately after Metsi-a-Lek-

oa workers arrived for inspection,” theysaid.

A reliable, well place source at the munic-ipality said the area was left undevelopedbecause of the big rocks.

The contractor said there’s no way thecommunity could occupy such dolomitic ar-ea. The area is too expensive or difficult fora bulldozer to push those big rocks.

“Siyanqoba Centre has been blamed foridentifying the land without consultationwith the government,” said sources.

Emfuleni Local Municipality spokesper-sonStanley Gaba said no one owns the landof the government:

“People must stop paying. The next thingis that they demand answers from the gov-ernment.”

He promised to visit the area with thementioned managers of the Centre.

Tick tick, community wantsto barricade Golden Highway

The community of Hlalase section in Graceland near the Golden Highway say they have had enough of the long wait for development.

EVATON. - Learners from Zitha PrimarySchool together with community membersshared the importance of wetlands throughsong and dance. The youth’s lyrics drove themessage home to approximately 500 com-munity members and dignitaries who filledthe Mafatsane Community Centre to partici-pate in World Wetland Month activities intheir locality. The event was organised by the Gauteng

Department of Agriculture and Rural Deve-lopment’s Sustainable Resources Manage-ment directorate, in partnership with Emfu-leni municipality. Twelve-year-old Neo Mo-gotsi filled her goody bag with giveawayprizes courtesy of the Rand Water Foundati-on awareness team. Mogotsi outdid herschoolmates by answeringmost of the barra-ge of questions.

They were quizzed about wetlands, wherethe country sources its water and how scient-ists detect and treat disease-inducing waterorganisms.“I am concerned that if people continue

to resist paying for the water they use, go-vernment may not afford to buy equipmentand chemicals to ensure that the water we

drink is safe for consumption,” Mogotsi ela-borated when asked about her enquiringmind and obsession with water discussions. The Department of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Veterinary Services Chief di-rector Dr Malcolm De Bude said that thisyear’s theme is relevant and rightly calls onyoung people to actively participate in pro-tecting the environment. He stressed that theyouth are torch bearers who need to get in-volved in seeking solutions to the challengesin their locality. The community, armed withgloves and masks, defied the scorching heatand cleaned the area around the wetland. TheEkhuruleni Environmental ManagementMMC Vuyelwa Mabena called on the com-munity to take care of their surroundings. She said that the community should be theeyes and ears of government and report anychallenges timeously to ensure that officialsresolve problems before they escalate.Other partners included the Gauteng Wet-

Experience has taught me never to becomea coward. It has taught me never to retreatand it has also taught me the meaning of ac-cepting the things I cannot change. I writethis with a heavy heart as this week I amlaying to rest someone who is dearest to me,one of the pillars of my strength. No one wants to die. Even people who

want to go to heaven don’t want to die to

get there. And yet death is the destinationwe all share. No one has ever escaped it. Andthat is as it should be, because Death is verylikely the single best invention of Life. It isLife’s change agent. It clears out the old tomake way for the new.It is not how much you know about life

but how you live your life that counts. Thosewho can avoid mistakes by observing themistakes of others are most apt to keep freefrom sorrow. In a world full of uncertainties, the record of what has gone before - humanexperience - is as sure and reliable as anyt-

hing of which we know.To live means to experience through

doing, feeling, thinking. Experience takesplace in time, so time is the ultimate scarceresource we have.Over the years, the content of experience

will determine the quality of life. Thereforeone of the most essential decisions any ofus can make is about how one’s time is allo-cated or invested.”Whoever said that loss gets easier with ti-

SEBOKENG. - Three district officials and thedistrict SGB official were unable to calm theangry parents of Lefika Primary schoolchil-dren last Tuesday morning.Parents took a stand on Tuesday to ‘take

the bull by the horns’. The acting school prin-cipal and the entire teaching staff were lockedout of the school by furious parents. The gate and fence between parents, and

teachers and the principal, were the only me-diators there to calm the situation down asverbal wrestling ensued between the three. It is alleged that the school principal does

not hear or respect the views of parents. Pa-rents claim that the acting principal is rudeand treats them like illiterates. Some parentsclaim there are a number of cases they perso-nally reported to the District officer that havegone unattended. They dispute the manner in which the Stu-

dent Governing Body (SGB) is run.

SBG chairperson Morena Mabatoane toldSedibeng Ster there was a case of assault inwhich a teacher allegedly slapped a child andthe parents were fuming for revenge. The dis-trict official did not act.“We had about five meetings in a space of

two months. We had complaints and claimsabout the principal. Nothing has been done.I don’t know what they want here becausethey failed to respond to our grievances,” saysthe SGB chairperson. While talking to the media, parents locked

horns with the school principal who, it is clai-med, called one of the parents a ‘rubbish’.There was nocomment from the principal, who would not say a word to the media. The three district officials said they also

had nothing to say to the media, and parentsasked them to leave the premises. Mabotoanesays they arewaiting for the right and relevantperson from the District to ‘address us as pa-rents and not as animals’.

VEREENIGING. - General Smuts HighSchool has once again shown irrepressiblespirit on the grandstands at the annual Veree-niging/Meyerton Interhoër athletics meetingwhere they won both the Best Cheerleadersand Best Team Spirit trophies. They also won the Spirit Trophy at the En-

glish Interhigh meeting. As the co-ordinator, Aletha de Klerk said:

“The ‘cherry’ of winning was a bonus; the

‘cake’ of enjoying the day was that it wasreally all about Smuts and you don’t haveto wear a cape to be a hero, just wear a Smut-sie blazer!”The theme this year was “Heroes”.The 200 spectators’ spirits were buoyed

by the love and respect for their very ownhero, Mr Ronald Bartie, who has been head-master of the school since 1995.

His outstanding leadership, dedication

and inspiration will be sorely missed afterhe retires at the end of April this year. The entire performance on the stand was

dedicated to him, and there was not a dryeye in the house as the banner bearing hisphotograph unfurled across the stand to thetune of “You Raise me up” during the ope-ning sequence.

There was not a moment of quiet throug-hout day, with colourful displays of cloth, shakers, pompoms, drums and cheering.Cheerleading has become an integral part

of the educational extra-mural programmeand continues to shape leaders by providingopportunities for the learners to practise dis-cipline, team participation and tenacity.

instructions and that all mistakes are corrected beforethe next edition.

MooiVaal Media does not accept any responsibilityfor more than one faulty placing.

It is not as if TOUCHLINE ran away fromits responsibility, but being part of the Emfu-leni Local Football Association executivecommittee would be like “selling my soul”or compromising my profession. It has beena while now since some officials have beentrying to persuade yours truly/TOUCHLI-

NE to be part of the local football leadershipstructure, but there would be toomany com-plications.TOUCHLINE really appreciates the con-

fidence that local coaches and officials havein me, and it is always my desire to leadfootball development in this region. Yet Ican only serve in committees that providetechnical support - not in the executive com-mittee.TOUCHLINE doesn’t have to be in the

executive committee to make a differencein our local football.

That doesn’t mean all of us should bepart of the executive committee in this regi-on. There must be people who have use forthose sub-committees that will be formedafter elections. TOUCHLINE can only ser-ve in those sub-committees.Football doesn’t only exist in the boar-

droom. We also need people who will dothe ‘spade-work’, to say the least. As TOU-

CHLINE always says – football is not play-ed in boardroom but on the field. TOU-CHLINE’s message to those who reallywant me to serve in the Emfuleni LocalFootball Association executive committeeis: I will avail myself for those sub-commit-tees. TOUCHLINE also wants to take theopportunity to acknowledge those who sho-wed faith. I feel humbled but NO thanks.Next week same place, same time fromTOUCHLINE!!!

he said after the catching, “We released thosefishes back into the river. The gold medal re-ceived has encouraged me to participate andprove my strength.”Banda is looking forward to another com-

VANDERBIJLPARK. - One of the first offi-cial Knowledge Generation Projects of theKaizer Chiefs Innovation Centre will be ba-sed on the Vaal Triangle Campus of theNorth-West University, NWU Vaal. This is a practical research project that will

see academics from the Department of Indus-trial Psychology take to the sporting pavilionin the weeks to come.Researchers will – together with Kaizer

Chiefs - investigate factors that contributetowards the levels of motivation of sportsfans as well as the development of psycholo-gical identification with a particular sportsteam.According to Ederick Stander, the Subject

Chair of Industrial Psychology on the VaalTriangle Campus, the research is aimed atbetter understanding the South African sportconsumer, especially in the context of muchsought-after sporting codes like soccer.“Through this practical research initiative

we will be able to provide Kaizer Chiefs exe-cutive management with greater insight anddata breakdowns of why exactly differentgroups - within their current fraternity of fans- react to and identify so strongly with theKaizer Chiefs brand,” explains Stander.Another aim of the research initiative is to

better understand fan behaviour to enable theclub to further fine-tune their marketing and

engagement strategies. Honours students inthe programmes Industrial Psychology, Hu-man Resources and Labour Relations, will al-so get the opportunity to participate as field-workers on the project as part of their ‘practi-cum’. The latter refers to their OrganisationalBehaviour module. The first round of the project took place

over the weekend when the “Glamour Boys”played their arch rivals Orlando Pirates in theSoweto Derby - one of the most fiercely con-tested games in world football. The project forms part of the Campus’s

mandate to act as a knowledge-resource part-ner to the club by means of the Kaizer ChiefsInnovation Centre. This centre will officiallybe opened in May this year. The projects for 2015 include delivery of

accredited certificate courses to the KaizerChiefs Youth Academy staff, as well as deve-lopment of ‘Life after Football’ Interventionsaimed at the current Kaizer Chiefs players.NWU Vaal and Kaizer Chiefs announced

their unique partnership in October 2013 andthe partnership sees the University availingits expertise to benefit young talented foot-ballers at the club’sYouthAcademy in Johan-nesburg.The Centre for Continuing Professional

Development (CCPD) on the Vaal TriangleCampus will furthermore serve as the point

of contact between the football club and ex-perts across the University. The expertise willbe specifically utilised to develop young foot-ball players in totality and therefore includesnot only playing skills. The NWU will provide consultancy and

advice on a wide variety of topics. These in-clude finance, nutrition, psychological prepa-ration for high performance sport and physi-cal conditioning. The footballers will be de-veloped in academic and professional fieldsin order to prepare them for life after theirprofessional football careers. In addition to the marketing benefits of

the association with a world-renowned brandlike Kaizer Chiefs, the NWU will strengthen

its third stream income revenue through theimplementation of expertise.Another result of the collaboration bet-

ween Kaizer Chiefs and the University is theKaizer Chiefs Innovation Centre located onthe Vaal Triangle Campus. This centre – afirst of its kind within the higher educationsphere - will grant staff and students as wellas supporters from the local community, theopportunity to experience the total KaizerChiefs brand experience. The partnershipwith Kaizer Chiefs is proof of the NWU’sgood reputation as a research institution withan excellent knowledge-base and as an inter-nationally recognised destination for sportsdevelopment.

MEYERTON. - On Sunday March 1, SouthAfrican amputee para-triathlete Stan An-drews competed and placed 9th overall inthe 2015 Buffalo City ITUWorld Paratriath-lon Event. The event hosted a total of 39 top male

and female international para-triathletes inall five categories. The men’s PT4 category held the fiercest

competition with 16 entrants (six of whomwere South Africans) of the total 39 entrantstaking part in this category.Andrews reported the swim to be tough

with a heavy side current that affected allthe competitors equally.Entrants were given the opportunity to

make use of a ‘pre-transition’, where athletesare able to remove their wetsuits and put ontheir prostheses in an area near the water.Despite having competed in many other

triathlons, the ‘pre-transition’ was a first forAndrews, who felt that it cost him valuableseconds, causing his Transition 1 time to be30 seconds slower than in previous events. The bike course went well for Andrews,

who feels that cycling is his weakest disci-pline of the triathlon events. The wind played into his hand and helped

his climb back up the express way, leavinghim ready to jump into Transition 2 after twoloops. The run was challenging for Andrewswho, after overtaking fellow South Africancompetitor Nico Nel, was in 10th place 28seconds behind Spaniard Rafael Solis Tor-res.Ultimately, Andrews placed 9th out of the

field due to the disqualification of a fellowcompetitor, the reason for which is un-known, and was the first South African tofinish. In nine weeks’ time, Andrews will com-

pete in Egypt with the goal of scoring enoughpoints to compete in the Grand Final in Chic-ago, USA.Stan wishes to thank all those whose con-

tributions made this weekend a success, namely TSA and Buffalo City, as well as Bi-ogen and NoExcuses who contributed to thecost of the trip.* Stan grew up in Meyerton, attended

school at Meyerton Primary and then Gener-al Smuts High.He now resides in Roodepoort. The Mid-

vaal municipality will be hosting a 5km funwalk onMarch 21 inMeyerton and the bene-ficiary of the walk will be StandwithStan,

a non profit organisation he founded in 2013.StandwithStan provides disadvantaged am-putees with prosthetics, mentoring and

maintenance-training for the prosthetic in or-der for the amputee to regain mobility anda higher quality of life.

SEBOKENG. - As Sedibeng Ster - for-merly Vaal Weekly - predicted ten yearsago, Thabo “Jomo” Rakhale has beco-me a household name. This newspaper predicted the future

of this dazzling Orlando Pirates midfiel-der beneath the headline “Destined tobecome a household name”.This Sebokeng-based sensation mes-

merised soccer fans who packed theFNB Stadium to capacity during the So-weto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs andOrlando Pirates on Saturday.Rakhale came in as a `sub’ and im-

mediatelymade an impact that much de-lighted Pirates supporters.Hewas a swift crowd favourite, to say

the least.

Rakhale started his amateur soccer careerwith the local soccer team Junior Lions FC.His rise to stardom came when he went toPotchefstroom’s North West University tostudy Sports Science. He established himself as a top footballer

while studying.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Rakhale

says it was all about hard work to achievethis in a short space of time.Rakhale started his professional debut

with Polokwane City before Pirates calledhim back from a loan spell with the club.Rakhale says education is key to any yo-

ung person regardless of whether he or sheis playing sports or not.“I’m grateful for the support I receive

from all the Sedibeng people because if itwasn’t for that support I don’t think I would

be where I am today.First I made sure that I got the best educa-

tion and after that I focused on my footballcareer,” says Rakhale. Many local soccer fans believe that Rak-

hale is following in the footsteps of formerOrlando Pirates dribbling wizard and homeboy Steve ‘Chippa’ Lekoelea, who was alsothe crowd favourite. He says he is excited to be compared with

Lekoelea because he grew up admiring him.He adds, “I get excited when people say

I’m following in the footsteps of Chippa be-cause, when I was young, he was my rolemodel and even today I admire him.”Rakhale says his short-term goal is to play

for Bafana Bafana. No doubt, with his current performance,

the boy deserves a national call up.

As predicted - Rakhale a household name!

Thabo ‘Jomo' Rakhale is an OrlandoPirates crowd favourite. This was clear when Pirates played against theirarchrivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Saturday. Photo: Supplied.
