After developing a new manu- facturing technology to make per- sonalization easier and more effi- cient, Robert and his sons launched a Web site in 2003 where con- sumers could create their own ap- parel, posters and prints. After two years, the Palo Alto-based compa- ny has grown to include greeting cards, postcards and most recently postage stamps. Along with growth in product choice, Zazzle secured $16 million in investments in July. W hat does the computer mouse, a new cancertreatment, and robot surgery have in common?Everything, according to author Donald L.

Nielson. His new book, “A Heritage of Innovation: SRI’s First

Half Century”, incorporates those three innovations and53 others, as it explores the inventions and develop-ments of SRI International — a worldwide nonprofit re-search group based in Menlo Park.

In 1998, after more than 40 years of experience atSRI International — first as a researcher, and then asvice-president — Nielson retired and began work onthe nearly 450-page book.

“The main reason I wrote the book was to help SRI re-searchers become more aware of some of the importantaccomplishments made at SRI since it was founded in1946,”Neilson said. “(But) it doesn’t hurt that the bookwould cause others outside the institute to become morefamiliar with SRI’s many accomplishments.”

SRI was created in 1946 as the Stanford Research In-stitute and remained affiliated with the university untilthe late 1960s, when Stanford students organized mul-tiple protests demanding an end to research into chem-ical and biological warfare and counter-insurgency.

The nine-day sit-in at the institute’s Applied Elec-tronics Lab, an occupation of Encina Hall, multiple ar-rests, tear-gassing, picketing and rock-throwing all ledto the university relinquishing control of the institute, aswell as the closure of the most controversial part of SRI— a site at the Stanford Industrial Park that studiedcounter-insurgency in Southeast Asia.

Since Jan. 13, 1970, SRI International has operated onits own and engaged in more than 50,000 projects in thefields of science, technology, social systems and eco-nomics for the US government, nonprofits, and the com-mercial sector.

Neilson’s book details projects from before and afterSRI’s split with the university, the most recognizableproject being research into the opening of Disneyland inthe 1950s.

“To understand (the operations of Disneyland) better,SRI held discussions across the United States with more

than 10 major amusement park operators, four ride man-ufacturers, and others,” Nielson wrote. “SRI’s financialplanning was detailed and included revenues from park-ing, admission, rides, food, and souvenirs; the operatingorganization required; and even the type and number ofturnstiles to be used.”

Currently, SRI International is conducting researchinto services for disabled children, a project funded bythe U.S. Department of Education’s Office of SpecialEducation Programs.

As recently as July 25, the institute announced thecompletiion of several major milestones in this project, whose end goal is to create a way of measuring the ef-fectiveness of programs for infants, toddlers andpreschoolers with disabilities.

Besides this wide array of research topics, many ofwhich Nielson explores in his book, SRI International isalso known for the new branch-off companies it creates— like Nuance, which specializes in speech-recognitionsoftware platforms and was jump-started by Nielsonhimself — and new fields of study altogether.

“We regularly invent new ideas that create entire newindustries,” Ellie Javardi, SRI International’s press di-rector, said. “For example, the Sarnoff Corporation (acompany born from SRI) has won 10 Emmys and de-veloped the U.S. HDTV standard.”

Among other things, SRI created The Dish at Stan-ford, and researched techniques that can stimulatemovement in a monkey’s paralyzed limbs. It createdlaser systems to monitor air pollution and researched thesex habits of the bark beetle.

But all of the subjects are drawn together becausethey were chosen based on the interests of the actual re-searchers and scientists at SRI, making the work of thecompany a direct reflection of its employees, an aspectNielson attempts to capture in his book.

“SRI, somewhat through the people it has trained in in-novation, has had an important influence on the SouthBay’s culture for entrepreneurial activity,” Nielson said.“It is hard to be an individual participant in that broadculture without wanting to change the world throughyour own actions.” ■

ing technology was. With a fatherwho had business as well as man-ufacturing expertise, the two boysfelt compelled to try their hand atentrepreneurship.

“I was a junior at Stanford whenwe first started kicking aroundideas about starting companies,”Bobby said. “We became fascinat-ed with the notion of on-demandmanufacturing, specifically the ap-parel industry.

“Printable T-shirt technology wasvery antiquated, and it was toughto actually go through the process. We wanted to manufacture thingson the fly and at a very high qual-ity. The market place notionspawned from that.”

The Zazzle site allows consumersto browse through thousands ofimages — which include Disneycharacters and historical photo-graphs from the Library of Con-gress as well as the creations ofother customers — and put togeth-er their own personalized products.

Buyers can look through gal-leries created by people fromaround the world, or turn their ownphotographs and artwork into T-shirts and posters and become con-tributors themselves. Whenever acontributor’s work is purchased, the creator receives a portion of theprofits.

Along with the freedom to man-age and customize their own gal-leries, contributors can also sendand receive feedback. “It’s excitingto be a part of a marketplace that isconnecting people by their inter-ests and likes,” Bobby said. “Icould find someone from Francethat enjoys the same things I do.”

Along with “hiring like crazy,”

Robert said Zazzle will use thenew money to improve the func-tionality of the site and increasethe span of products. Reluctant togive any specifics, Robert empha-sized that Zazzle’s main goal is tomeet the demands of its customers, which are often disclosed in con-tributors’ e-mails.

“Our users really own Zazzle. They create the products. Theycreate the community,” Jeff said.

Although, there are several com-petitors out there, the Beavers feelthey have found a niche. With alarge variety of products, guaran-teed satisfaction and a promise tomail out an order within 24 hours,Zazzle is unique. The key to theirsuccess lies in the manufacturingprocess. While Jeff and Bobby cre-ated the Web site, one of Robert’smain tasks was to perfect the tech-nology.

After building five machines thatwere all more effective than silk-screening, Robert was crushed todiscover that one, new brand ofTide detergent washed away 70percent of the shirts’ colors. Leftwith the decision to either warnconsumers not to use this specificdetergent or start over after a yearand a half, Robert and his sonsopted to develop another tech-nique.

The process they use today workswith all detergents, and is fasterand more cost effective than silk-screening.

“I think in general, there’s this‘wow’ factor that people don’t re-ally understand until they pur-chase. What Zazzle is doing is tak-ing something that is digital andturning into something that is real, tangible. Customers experience areally meaningful and personal endresult from the site,” Jeff said. ■

“BeZazzled”(continued from page 49)

A n unusual sound overwhelmed a sum-mer music camp at the CommunitySchool of Music and Arts: complete si-

lence.Instead of blasting trumpets or pounding pi-

ano keys, the six young musicians at camp satquietly at computer stations, using head-phones to listen to the music they were digi-tally composing.

Their instructor, Joao Neves, had just ex-plained how to use the computer and attachedpiano keyboard. The campers diligentlytapped and clicked away, putting togethershort pieces of music and ignoring everythingelse around them.

“Now it’s almost impossible to get their at-tention,” Neves said.

Technology is being used to enhance mu-sic and arts education throughout the country, but perhaps the task is easiest in Silicon Val-ley, with leaders of the digital technology in-dustry nearby to provide consultations, inspi-ration and venues for field trips. At CSMA,technology has been incorporated into thestandard curriculum.

This summer marks the third in a row thatthe nonprofit arts education organization hasprovided digital classes. Students from age 9to 19 can take weeklong digital arts and mu-sic classes and six-week courses for kids and

adults on such topics as audio recording, se-quencing, DJ skills and turntablism, Web de-sign and animation.

During the school year, students in gradesfour and higher can attend similar weeks-longcourses on various digital arts subjects, in ad-dition to the traditional music classes and les-sons CSMA offers. Additionally, the organi-zation offers digital arts samplers in earlySeptember. The 2 1/2-hour classes cost $25each, allowing students to try their hand atnew art forms.

CSMA instructors have found that adultand younger students bring very different skill

sets to digital arts classes. In general, theysay, children are more computer literate thantheir older counterparts, who may havegreater experience playing an instrument orknowledge of music theory. To get all stu-dents on the same page, all are required totake a free introductory class before beginninga course.

Daniel Wood, special music programs co-ordinator, said kids typically see a naturalconnection between technology and musicmore than older students.

“It’s become a part of their vocabulary,” hesaid.

The digital component of the classes at-tracts many children who normally wouldn’tenroll in music or art courses. Others simplyuse technology to enhance their art- and mu-sic-making. Instructors at CSMA work toprovide crossover between classes for stu-dents.

For instance, a violinist may record hiswork at a lesson, then experiment with thesounds in a digital lab. He then may alter hisplaying at his next lesson to achieve an effecthe liked in the studio. The process also couldhelp him understand the underlying princi-ples of music.

“Once they become better listeners, theybecome better in their theory classes,” Wood

said. But while students see the need for today’s

artists and musicians to be computer savvy,Wood said teachers are careful to keep thefocus on learning the basics and excelling atthe craft, using technology as one of manytools.

“The only downside of technology is it’seasy to create a product without understand-ing the art behind it,” Wood said.

It’s easy to understand why students mightbe anxious to use the technology instead ofpracticing scales or perspective drawing. Cer-tainly the presence of iPods and Pixar ani-mation, not to mention the special effects inthe “Star Wars” movies, have kids excitedabout technology. And many students enjoylearning how the songs they hear on the radioare made.

Another reason digital classes have be-come popular, Wood said, is that the art formsdon’t carry hundreds of years of history withthem. Kids get to make the music their parentsnever did and create animated forms no onehas ever imagined. And with more experi-mental media, there are no rigid rules to fol-low, no rights and wrongs to keep in mind.

“There’s no tradition saying you have to doit this way,” Wood said. “It’s digital free-dom.”■
