Wastewater needs to be monitored closely to prevent environmental pollution and human illness.

Oxygen Demand and CODChemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is defined as the amount of specified oxygen that reacts with a sample under controlledconditions. The quantity of oxygen consumed is expressed interms of its oxygen equivalent: mg/L of O 2.

The HANNA COD method is based on the well established closeddichromate-reflux colorimetric method.

Moreover the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) specifiesthat the dichromate reflux method is the only methodacceptable for reporting purposes . The advantage in using thismethod includes certifiable results as well as high accuracy.

COD Testing ApplicationsCOD is used as a measurement of pollutants. It is normallymeasured in both municipal and industrial wastewater treatmentplants and gives an indication of the efficiency of the treatmentprocess. COD is measured on both influent and effluent water. Theefficiency of the treatment process is normally expressed as CODRemoval, measured as a percentage of the organic matter purifiedduring the cycle. COD has further applications in power plantoperations, chemical manufacturing, commercial laundries, pulp

and paper mills, agriculture and animal waste runoff, environmental studies and general education. HANNA equipmentcan be used in the laboratory or for on-site testing. Themeasurement procedure has been designed for ease of use bypersonnel at any skill level.

    Monitoring examples:

Beyond COD:Nitrogen and PhosphorusThe goal in Wastewater Treatment is not only COD reduction, butalso to control Nitrogen and Phosphorus, which are responsible foreutrophication phenomena in natural environments. COD,

Nitrogen, and Phosphorus control are performed not only to obeyenvironmental protection laws, but also to optimize plant costs.

Effective monitoring and control of parameters such asammonia, nitrate, total nitrogen and total reactivephosphorus allow plant managers to profile and improvethe health of aquatic ecosystems. By accurately monitoringlevels of each specific pollutant, operational parameters canbe adjusted to maintain high efficiency of biodegradationtreatments while also minimizing costs.

NitrogenWhen a treatment plant uses processes like nitrification anddenitrification, it is important to monitor and maintain the

equilibrium between Ammonia Nitrogen, Nitrate and Total Nitrogen during the bio-treatment. The nitrogen level is importantbecause it relates to the quantity of oxygen provided in thenitrification area. Ammonia is also controlled because it canbecome very toxic for the bacteria responsible for denitrification.

    Phosphorus

Phosphorus is measured during both biological and chemical dephosphorization. An excessive amount of phosphate dischargedin superficial waters or in bio-treatment tanks causes an increaseof algae and system eutrophication

Tailor-Made AccessoriesThe following accessories and spare parts have been specially designed for COD analysisto make your measurements simpler and safer.

Quick Chloride TestsThe HI 3898 test kit, developedaccording to the ISO 15705:2002 method, determines chloride concentration.

This very important test is recommendedby ISO, since an excessive presence of chloride can interfere with the COD analysis.

The test gives a fast YES/NO reply to thequestion if chloride will interfere with theCOD analysis. If chloride concentration isgreater than the official maximum level, the solution turns yellow and the sampleneeds to be diluted before performing theCOD test, otherwise if the solution isorange-brown, the sample doesnt need tobe diluted.

The maximum level allowed is 1000 ppmof Cl - following ISO methods, or 2000 ppm

of Cl - for US EPA, APHA, AWWA and WEmethods.
