An amateur’s guide to the open house tour: living well is the best revengeSOMETIMES CRIME-BEAT reporters

ride in police cars to get an up-close-and-personal feeling about crime and the dangerspolicemen face. I am far too faint of heart todo that. My beat is real estate, and eventhough some consider home prices in this

area a crime, I didn’t think there was muchdanger involved in riding around with a realestate agent to look at open houses. My onlyconcern was being assaulted by bad fengshui.

On a recent Tuesday morning I metRichard Warren, a broker-associate withSotheby’s International Realty. We mappedour strategy over coffee. There were 21homes listed on the Carmel Tour. He choseseven of them for us to see. The pricesranged from $995,000 to just short of thenational debt.

Context is a very important element inRichard’s analysis of a home.

“If you are studying a period in history,”he said, “for instance, Abraham Lincoln’s

period, you would have to consider the eco-nomic, social, industrial, cultural, and otherfactors of that period. You would look at themoods, attitudes, and conditions that existedin that time.” Similarly, he asked me to lookat each home in its present context. Location,

of course, is important, but soare market trends, similaritiesof properties, unusual fea-tures, which can be plusses orminuses, asking prices, sellingprices, and presentation.

So off we went. Thephrase, “living well is the best

revenge,” is attributed to the English poet,George Herbert, who died in 1633, so, obvi-ously, he never lived here. Had he seenhomes in Carmel he might have taken thethought a little further by quoting from hiscontemporary, William Shakespeare, whoobserved that, “revenge should have nobounds.” Living well, and seemingly withoutlimits, is definitely something that goes onaround here.

Even though I was not in the market tobuy, I looked at each house from the point ofview of whether or not I could live there. Sopresentation was high on my list. Locationwasn’t that important to me. Hey, we’re inCarmel. If St. Peter lets me through thePearly Gates, I really don’t care where he

myself walking to just about any place Iwanted to go in Carmel, such as the postoffice, or any of the fine coffee emporiumsin town, yet still be able to kick off my shoesand walk barefoot on the beach. Speaking ofkicking off one’s shoes, I learned you shouldwear slip-on shoes when going on theCarmel House Tour. Shoe removal wasmandatory at several of the homes.

The tour was like visiting new lands witha very knowledgeable guide. There was apleasant, cozy camaraderie among the realestate agents, both the touring and the listingagents. I was deeply impressed by how wellprepared the agents showing the propertieswere.

All the homes we visited were lovely.They were prime properties in superb loca-tions. They were very different. Each had itsown personality. As an amateur I kept assess-ing each property’s value in terms of what Iwould be getting for the price. I wasn’talways sure, so I was glad I had the benefitof real estate agent’s expertise.

“Determining the value of Real Propertyis an art, not a science,” Richard said. That iswhy putting each home in its proper contextis so important to a potential buyer.

under a million dollars. The location wasgood – walking distance to downtown. Weboth liked the floor plan and the houseshowed beautifully, but mostly, I thought,because of the way it was furnished. The fur-nishings and decorations were specific to itsunique floor plan. I thought you would haveto buy the house and the furniture to make itlivable.

The next house was priced at nearly$4,000,000. There was a view of the oceanfrom an upstairs bedroom. I thought, whyhave an ocean view from a bedroom, unless,of course, when you walked out of the bed-room you were a few steps from wading inthe water. My feeling was that the viewrequired a room where you spent a lot ofdaylight hours, such as an office or a den.That’s a change I would make upon movingin. Another home with a similar asking pricehad a better view from the main living areaand adjacent terrace. Also, it was only a driveand a five iron from the Pebble Beach GolfLinks, if you hit a golf ball like DustinJohnson does.

A couple of homes we saw were inCarmel’s Shangri-La, the Golden Rectangle.I would move there in a heartbeat. I can see

Pacific Grove: Dispatched to report of a verbal argumentover municipal codes and ordinances. Both parties were separat-ed once on scene, and the situation was determined to beunfounded. One party made a remark the other party believedwas a threat. Parties apologized. No criminal action.

Pacific Grove: Students at P.G. High School were reportedto the school resource officer as being under the influence ofalcohol. Two students were contacted. Both were found to beintoxicated. Cited and given disciplinary action by the school.

Pacific Grove: Dispatched to report of male resident barri-caded in his room on Pico who was defecating on himself andrefused to shower. After convincing him to come out, officersdetermined he was gravely disabled and was placed on an emer-gency commitment hold. Nothing further.

Pacific Grove: Monarch Lane residentreported receiving a suspicious phone call froma caller who identified himself as a police offi-cer and asked to speak with her husband. Whenthe resident asked who he was, the subjectasked her if she could speak English. The resi-dent placed the call on speaker so her neighborcould hear the conversation. The resident’sneighbor asked the subject for his name. Hesaid he did not speak to third parties and endedthe call. The officer dialed the number provid-ed by resident, and the subject answered thephone as “Investigations.” Upon asking forwhich department, he hung up on the officer.Comments have been posted online in relationto this phone number and these types of calls.A copy of the posted comments has beenattached to this report.

Pacific Grove: Officers were dispatched toOcean View Boulevard to meet with SocialServices workers and assist with taking a sub-ject into custody on a voluntary mental healthcommittal. Prior to officers’ arrival, the subjectmade threats to harm the officers, take theirguns and commit “suicide by cop.” Dispatchinformed officers that the subject was notbelieved to be armed. Per the social workers’request, they approached the subject by them-selves, but with officers close by. They con-vinced the subject to voluntarily be transportedto the hospital by emergency medical person-nel.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A traffic stop wasconducted on a vehicle on Santa Lucia for hav-ing a non-operational stop lamp. The driverwas found to have a suspended drivers license.The driver was also found to have 2.5 grams ofmarijuana. The driver was cited, and the mari-juana was photographed and placed into CPDevidence. The vehicle was released to alicensed driver.

Pebble Beach: A suicidal person was com-mitted to the hospital for a psychiatric evalua-tion.

Pacific Grove: Resident on Grove Acre res-ident advised officers her friend who is a taxicab driver dropped her off in front of her resi-dence. The woman stayed in the cab talking toher friend for a few minutes, and her upstairsneighbor confronted her and told her they werenot allowed to park out front and stated it madeher look as if she was a prostitute. She wasoffended by the neighbor’s comment and toldhim to leave her alone. The woman’s sistercame outside and overheard the neighbor berat-ing the woman. She advised him to leave thewoman alone and told him to shut up. The res-ident and her sister are concerned for their safe-ty, because they know the neighbor suffersfrom schizophrenia and believe he may harmthem if this should happen again.
