one another. While on the Board my everyintention is to keep all eyes on the prize, aflourishing sport of purebred dogs inAmerica. We need more teamwork and lessbureaucracy, more common sense and lesscomplaining, more solutions and more ideas.I have proposed that we conduct a compre-hensive study of the issues facing our clubsand our shows. During my tenure I will takethis on and I hope that you will all join me aswe seek solutions and remedies. We all havethe passion to affect the changes we need. Weowe it to our sport and surely to our dogs totry. Thank you.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Tom. The first candi-date for the class of 2024 is Carl C. Ashby, III,representing the United States Kerry BlueTerrier Club.

Mr. Ashby: Good morning. During our brieftime together this morning I'd like to sharewith you the kind of Director I will be. Mydecisions will be driven by the mission of theAmerican Kennel Club. I would get thingsdone. I would question to gain insight andunderstanding. I would listen to and respectother points of view. I would be a team player– striving to bring people together to solveproblems. I would bring creative thinkingand innovative ideas. I would work to makeAKC the voice of dogs in America, all dogs, with an increased public relations presence. Most importantly I would value you and your

Club's thoughts on issues. I would listen andbe accessible. I would seek renewed emphasison the AKC mission to guide our decisions ordirections. My goals would be to increase ourvisibility engagement with the dog-owningpublic through registrations, event participa-tion and public outreach to assure our clubsare getting the support they must have as thevolunteer backbone of AKC. Make no mis-take, I know that policy flexibility is neces-sary, that some policies are outdated, andthat the time for action is now, and to doeverything possible to rebuild our legacyevent such as Conformation. These are thefoundations of our mission and the future ofpurebred dogs bred to a standard. We musthave new approaches to solve old problems.Staying in our “comfort zone” has not movedus forward as many of the old problemsremain. We must find solutions that embracethe new reality that surrounds us. During myprofessional career I was asked to lead organ-izations facing difficult challenges. I foundways to meet those challenges. The skills Iused then would serve you well in the AKCboardroom. I'm not the star at a cocktailparty, but that's not where the work getsdone. The work gets done in the boardroom, and it gets done in the boardroom and inrelationships around it. I build relationshipsand that is why I have been asked to serveand lead so many community organizations. Ihope to talk with many of you in the weeksahead. If you have a question or concern,

please call me. The best candidate informa-tion is always from the candidate. If elected Iwould bring as a past Board Vice Chair aworking knowledge of AKC, extensive experi-ence in multiple dog clubs including leadingevents, successful bottom line business expe-rience, and an unwavering commitment tothe mission of AKC. All are required to be aneffective AKC Director. Please allow me toserve you and your club with your vote inMarch. Thank you.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Carl. The secondcandidate is Jeffrey David Ball representingRamapo Kennel Club.

Mr. Ball: Mr. Ball: Good morning. Everyonein this room has two things in common:Their love of the dog and a knowledge thatthe success of the American Kennel Club isvital to the well-being of our dogs. The publicfeels the same way about one of these items. They love their dogs. In 2000 there were 68million dogs in America. It has climbed to 84million in 2018. Approximately 56 percent ofthe homes have dogs. The public spendingon their pets went from 17 billion in 1994 to$72.5 billion in 2018. These figures should begreat news for AKC, but there is problem. Weare not growing. Our registrations and showentries are down. Clubs are struggling torecruit members. It seems as if our breedingand show rights are under attack every day. Many companies and organizations struggle.

In fact, they project 40 percent of theFortune 500 companies will not exist in tenyears. They will fail for different reasons, butone of the main causes is they fail to change.Society is continuously evolving and there-fore forces change. Competition comes in dif-ferent forms and we need to adapt. A prob-lem we have is there is still a disconnect withthe public as well as many of the fancy itself.Either they do not know who AKC is, theyhave the wrong impression of AKC, or theythink of AKC as "them" and not "us". Thetruth is we are all AKC. To properly correctthis problem, we need the help of the clubs. There lies the bigger problem. Clubs arestruggling. Without clubs, AKC is just a reg-istry or another business. AKC is a club ofclubs first. We need to look at our policiesand understand what works for one does notwork for everyone. Different size clubs, differ-ent regions in the country, there are manyvariables to consider. We need to learn to bemore flexible. My goal would be to help uscollectively make a change. First, we need tohelp our clubs. We cannot build internal sup-port if we have internal struggles. We need tobe more accommodating and have a lot moreflexibility and give the clubs and fancy owner-ship of the AKC. Once clubs are stabilized, wecan begin to reeducate the public. As thefancy and public realize who we really are wewill once again begin to grow. I would lovethat opportunity to work with all the canineexperience and knowledge that we have in

this room. We can use creative thinking andinnovation to revitalize the clubs and helpthem assist us in continuing our mission, upholding the integrity of the registry for thepurebred dogs and breeding, as well asimprove the canine lives as well as the fami-lies, and responsible ownership. Thank you.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Jeffrey. The thirdcandidate is Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia repre-senting the German Shepherd Dog Club ofAmerica.

Dr. Battaglia: Good Morning, in the 3 min-utes I have, let me begin by saying I havetwice been President of both my Parent Cluband my local Specialty Club, I am an activemember of the Atlanta Kennel Club, abreeder of German Shepherd Dogs, and havefinished several himself. I judge the herding and working Groups, sev-eral sporting breeds and remain an activeBreeder of Merit. I have authored manybooks on dogs and published more than 70articles which have appeared in VeterinaryJournals, and in many of the leading dogmagazines. I was the Assistant Dean at EmoryUniversity and the Regional Administratorfor the US Department of Education. I servedmultiple terms on the AKC Board ofDirectors, chaired countless committees andwas liaison to the: Parent Club, Bylaws,Canine Health, Companion Events, Herding,Earthdog & Coursing Events Delegate

Committees. I am a current PAC and ReuniteBoard member and chair AKC’s, DogDetection Task Force whose mission is tohelp increase the supply of detection dogsthat are needed to protect the country. Withthat said, my background in business and inthe dog world had prepared me for the manyprojects I would like to finish. For example, Ichaired the committee that developed theDNA system we have today and streamlinedthe requirements for importing dogs. I wason the board when we added the select titlein conformation and the 1 + 1 program. Ihelped improve the obedience point sched-ule. Achiever dog was a proposal I brought tothe Companion Events Committee whichgenerated over 66,000 entries. We have manygood things to talk about, the AKC Museumof the Dog is in now in NY and doing well;AKC.TV is growing and beginning to make adifference. These are on some of my accom-plishments, but there are other problems fac-ing AKC. Conformation is in its 15th year ofdeclining entries. Shows, clubs and breedsare suffering. The cluster has become theroute for most clubs to survive; 50% of thestud book are now low entry breeds, and only41% of our pups are being registered. Ourclubs are getting smaller and the greyingeffect is taking its toll. We have come a longway and I would like to work with the boardto focus on these compelling problems. I liketo think of our problems this way, we have thewillingness to fight and the talent to win. I

will need your vote in March. I am convincedwe can make things better.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Carmen. The fourthcandidate is Dr. Michael Knight representingTexas Kennel Club.

Dr. Knight: I spent three weeks writing myspeech and then I tore it up last night anddecided just to talk to you. I am probably theleast-known person running for this officeand what I've heard is "who is that guy?" So,my name is Michael Knight, I have a Ph.D. inhuman resources, a degree in banking andfinance, a degree in human resources, adegree in psychology, and a master's in psy-chology. And I was taught to be a fundraiserby my grandmother. That's part of what myfamily does. I own a staffing firm. I am veryfamiliar with working with a multimillion-dol-lar budget, I do it every day in charity workand with our company. I cannot tell you whoI will be, I can just tell you who I am already. Iam the guy who will listen. I am opinionated.I have a point of view. I think we need tomake changes now. I think that AKC needs tomake some changes, but I think it's already inprocess. I would like to hurry that alongbecause I think we're running out of time. Ithink band aids don't work. We need seriouschanges now. In our local area, in our cluster, and I've said some of this before. If it's arepeat to you, I'm sorry. I took a tour of ourjunior high schools and we got the principals

and the teachers to give us an hour in severalof the junior highs. We chose junior high kidsbecause they're not thinking about collegeyet. Seniors are thinking about college or spe-cialty schools, so we backed up and went tojunior high schools to talk about dog showsand being a handler or being a breeder, because juniors haven't made decisions aboutcollege yet. They're not thinking about whatthey want to do with their lives. Their parentsquite frankly aren't pushing them yet to makethose decisions. I asked the local schools, onein particular which like I mentioned earlierthere are 49 junior high schools in Dallas andFort Worth, to please come to our dog show.We expected a few kids to show up. Threeschool buses showed up, 96 kids came, theytook a tour, they had a great time. We'regoing to go to the other 49 schools and offerthe same thing. And we then had a class onour programs about being a handler. We had19 children show up with their parents, com-pletely enthusiastic about this might be some-thing my kid would love, even though thechildren brought the parents. They all leftwith a lot of knowledge about what AKC is,what AKC could be to them, what our localcluster could do for them. We have grownour show, like I said, to 36 specialties. Wehelp them financially. We take our Purinasponsorship money and sink it into theSpecialties because we want to grow the treas-uries of the small clubs because without thetreasuries they're going to go away anyway.

We have helped them with volunteer work.We help find people to help them. We don'tcare if you're in the club or not, just if youwant to volunteer, we will let you help us andwe will help you join us. Thank you.Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Michael. The fifthcandidate for the class of 2024 is KarolynneMcAteer representing the Irish Setter Club ofAmerica. Ms. McAteer: I have one piece of paperbecause I too tore up what I thought I wasgoing to say. I am from the Irish Setter Clubof America and I am a 50-year breeder ofIrish Setters. I am in conformation, huntingand field trials, and I am also the chairman ofa small rural all-breed club, so I think it's safeto say I'm in it with all of you, and I'm experi-encing exactly what you are. I thought itmight be more interesting to tell you what Ihave done in the past four years since I hadthe honor of your votes to win a board seat.Since I stood before you four years ago andearned your support, I have joined the Boardof the AKC CHF with an emphasis on com-munications. I am a founding member of theAKC.TV with the idea that as we celebrateour second birthday of that wonderful grow-ing entity, we are really starting to reach outto those beyond our own fancy; that is whereour growth is going to come and it's wherethe saving will come of purebred dogs. I serveon the board of the PAC and focus on ways tocommunicate to the public that we do notwant to lose what we love. That includes the

dog lying down next to you in front of thehearth, and it includes the one going arounda group ring. Our way to communicate is toget to the general public, and that's my per-sonal mission. So that is what I've been focus-ing on in the four years that I've sat in place.I coordinate the live streaming for this event,so you'll see me on the floors for daytime, and at night I'm hidden in a truck choosingcamera shots, so I'm hoping the general pub-lic gets to see all that, and I've done that for15 years for Westminster. I am vice presidentof Moore County Kennel Club which I toldyou about when we were all talking, a smallclub with the same issues all of you are hav-ing. However, we have found many waysaround those issues and to grow ourselves, and I would look forward to sharing thosewith the small clubs, in discussion. I ask foryour support so I can finish some of what Istarted and because I do want to be a part ofwhat I see as much needed change, so thankyou all.Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Karolynne.

you a report about our public relations initia-tives which keeps enhancing our brand andreputation. I'll continue to provide you withongoing information. On December 2nd thesocial media department reached their goalof 300,000 Instagram followers. This hugegrowth enables more conversations, educa-tion and engagement with fanciers and thedog loving public. We are experiencing ongo-ing success with our educational outreach onmany fronts. Mr. Sprung called on Ashley Jacot, Directorof Education, to deliver a presentation ontwo current Education initiatives.

Ms. Jacot: Thank you so much so having mehere today. I'm really looking forward totelling you about two of the many initiativesthat education uses to share our mission.William Butler Yeats once said that"Education is not the filling of a pail, but thelighting of a fire." I was a classroom teacherfor several years before working for theAmerican Kennel Club and I've seen the firethat's lit in children when they learn some-thing new. I've been fortunate to see thatagain in my work with the American KennelClub. I've seen children come to their veryfirst dog show as a part of our AKC PatchProgram and leave wanting to be a junior.I've seen their parents meet a breed that theynever even new existed and ask how to find abreeder in their area. We believe in thepower that our educational programs have to

bring people to purebred dogs, and I'm reallyexcited to share with you two of our initia-tives. The mission of AKC education is tobring dog fanciers, dog owners and the gen-eral public quality education about purebreddogs, the sport of purebred dogs, and theongoing importance of the relationshipbetween people and canines. It's that rela-tionship and our commitment to it that con-nects us all. The first initiative I'd like to talkto you about today is AKC Math Agility. AKCMath Agility is a mobile app that waslaunched on December 9, 2019. It's aimed atchildren five to eight and it features mathfacts in addition, subtraction, multiplicationand division. It introduces children to up to60 breeds and the sport of agility. Its purposeis to be designed as an educational tool thatwill introduce a new audience to purebreddogs and the sport of purebred dogs. So whya children's app? Fifty-two percent of mobileapp users under the age of 18 are ages fivethrough eight, and nine out of ten parentsbelieve that educational apps will play animportant role in their children's learning. It's a great way to reach an audience that'svery important to us. Little 10 Robot madethis app for us. They were founded in 2017,and they have created many learning apps forchildren. In addition to their library they'vealso created apps for the Walt DisneyCompany. As of August 2019, Little 10Robot's apps have been downloaded morethan 2.2 million times and have reached

more than 850,000 classrooms all over thecountry. So how does this app work? Playerswill tour the country competing in the AKCagility events as they work their way to theAKC National Championship. Players willtake 12 different tours across the map andeventually end at the AKC National AgilityChampionship in Perry, Georgia. The mathfacts that they choose will determine where inthe country they go. The game will feature 15playable dog breeds, and the children canunlock up to 60 additional breeds using amotivational system. The more challenginglevels they play, the more breeds they willunlock. Players will be able to practice mathfacts in addition, subtraction, multiplicationand division, and as the math facts appear onthe screen, the faster the children answer, thefaster the dog will complete the obstacles. Asthe player dances through the game, theyunlock additional breeds. Each card featuresinformation about the breed as well as twodifferent angles of the dog. Sixty total breedswere chosen ranging from the most popularto the more rare. Little 10 Robot createdthese dogs using geometric shapes andresearched each breed's standard for accu-racy. As the player dance advances throughthe game, the dog will travel more challeng-ing obstacles such as A frames and weavepolls. And once the course is finished, theresults appear on screen with scoring that iscorrect to the sport of agility. I have a littlepreview here for you.

(Video played)

Ms. Jacot: Thank you. We're very excitedabout this. The next program I want to tellyou about is the AKC PupPal program. TheAKC PupPal program provides children inneed of uplifting with a photo of and a letterfrom a canine friend. Any child is eligible toreceive a note, including children who arestruggling with illness, those who have lost aparent or a sibling, children who are missinga deployed parent, or who otherwise arestruggling through a difficult time. Ourdepartment seeks from dog owners photos oftheir dog and information about them. Weutilize that information as well as informationprovided by the child's parent to match chil-dren with dogs that share similar interestsand personality traits. We then write the let-ter and mail it to the child on behalf of thedog. This is Leo whose picture and informa-tion is being shared here with permissionfrom his parents. Leo has a very seriouschronic medical condition. He requires con-stant treatment. He was paired with Darla, achihuahua who also has a chronic medicalcondition. Leo's mom sent us this picture andtold us that Leo received his PupPal after avery difficult day of treatment and when heopened it and saw Darla, that was the firsttime he had smiled that entire day. We havereceived more than 250 requests from chil-dren just like Leo, some who are strugglingwith illness, some terminal or chronic, those

who have a missing parent, a deployed par-ent, these who have just recently lost a parentor a sibling. The children who have beenassigned to PupPal range in age from two to15, however, any child is eligible. They're fac-ing very serious issues, and a PupPal reallyhelps to brighten their day and help themmake a connection to someone when they'reneeding it the most. So, who are our dogs? We've received more than 2,000 submissionsfor dogs. We receive approximately 75 perday, and this is just since this programlaunched in late September. Eighty-one per-cent of the submissions represent 142 recog-nized breeds. Seven percent are FSS or mis-cellaneous -- excuse me -- twelve percent areFSS and miscellaneous, and seven percent areAll-American dogs. The dog owners representa really diverse group of individuals. Forty-five percent have previously or currently com-pete in AKC sports. Fifteen percent have adog registered with the AKC but have had nofurther interaction. Two percent are other, meaning that they may have attended a dogshow or seen one on TV. And then 38 per-cent are completely unfamiliar with theAmerican Kennel Club, and the PupPal pro-gram is their very first time interacting withus. Where are the dogs from? We have dogsfrom all 50 states, the District of Columbiaand Puerto Rico. We also have dogs fromNorway, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Scotland,Wales and Croatia, and we get more every dayfrom all over the world. It's really easy to get

involved in this program. Parents can submittheir child, and dog owners can submit theirdog online using a simple form on the AKCPupPals website which you'll see right hereon the right-hand side of the screen. If you'dlike to sign your dog up this weekend, youcan come by the public education booth onSaturday and Sunday. Children receive theirletters in seven to ten business days, and dogswho participate receive a certificate in themail as well as a bandana. You can see this ismy dog Boone wearing his PupPal bandana. So how do these initiatives help us accom-plish our goals? They help increase aware-ness to purebred dogs and the sport of pure-bred dogs amongst parents, teachers andchildren. They help provide us an opportu-nity to combat the negative message that ani-mal rights groups spread in schools and inour communities. And they provide us anopportunity to make an impact on childrenand their families and share with them thevalue that purebred dogs bring to their lives.Thank you so much for your time today. Please feel free to reach out to me, and alsoplease feel free to grab an AKC Math Agilityflyer when you turn in your registrationbadge. Thanks so much.

you very much for joining us here todayamidst the celebration of events that com-prise the AKC National Championship pre-sented by Royal Canin! Before we continue toenjoy in all the festivities with such great peo-ple and most especially the wonderful dogsfrom all around the world – I am here to pro-vide you with unaudited standalone financialresults of The American Kennel Clubthrough October 31, 2019. Taking a macro review, I’ll begin with ouryear to date revenues and expenses. Throughour most recent month-end closing, we haverecorded nearly $65.0 million dollars in TotalRevenue and $60.7 million dollars in TotalExpenses, for an Operating Income of almost$4.3 million dollars. In comparison to ourprior year audited results where we recog-nized $62.0 million dollars in Revenue with$62.4 million dollars in Expenses for an oper-ating loss of just under $500,000 dollars. A key headline to specifically showcase is thatour total year to date revenue comparisonpresents an overall increase of $3.0 milliondollars or 4.8% from that of October 31,2018. Let’s discover where our finest suc-cesses have been. Core Registration Volumes through October31. We have registered grand totals of215,000 litters and 499,000 dogs over 10months this year. Our litter volume hasincreased by 3% from 209,000 in 2018, whileour dog registrations have risen by 1.5% from492,000 at October 31, 2018. We continue to

remain optimistic in our objectives and as weapproach the remaining two months of thefiscal year, our ambitious goals remain toexceed milestones of 250,000 litters and580,000 dogs which both would markimprovement over the 2018 year. Let's measure our Major Revenue Sourcesand their increases year over year.Registration related items. Specifically, Dogs.We have recorded an additional $482,000 inrevenue this year which is a 3.2% increasefrom 2018. Our Litter Revenue increase of$287,000 dollars reflects an even bettergrowth at 4%. Reg Transfers have garneredan additional 14% or $193,000 dollars abovelast year. Pedigrees also have displayed a mod-est 2% increase which has equaled $87,000dollars of additional revenue. Outside ofRegistrations, our next largest areas of rev-enue increases include a number of variousprograms throughout the organization:AKC.TV year-to-date has produced added rev-enue of $614,000 dollars which we expect topositively continue through the end of ourfiscal year. Royalties & Sponsors have gener-ated an annual increase in revenue of morethan $480,000 dollars supporting AKC pro-grams. and Events, there have been more than19,700 events representing a 5% increasefrom the 2018 period. Our events haverecorded greater than 2.8 million entries, which reflects a 2% increase from last year. These successes have directly reflected a 5%or $760,000 dollar increase to Revenue acrossall of our Sports and Events. Congratulationsto everyone involved!! Let’s next measure the cost side of the equa-tion. Through October 31, 2019 our totalexpenses have declined by $1.8 million dol-lars or 3% as compared to the ten months of2018. In reviewing our Expense fluctuations yearover year, we note Payroll and Benefits havedeclined by $468,000 dollars this notwith-standing a minor 2% increase in Headcountfrom 2018. Monies spent on Consultants havedecreased by more than $1 million dollarssince our prior year. This is primarily due tothe relocation of both our AKC headquartersand AKC Museum of The Dog that took placeduring 2018. Our AKC.TV program which isflourishing tremendous growth during 2019has incurred increased costs of $825,000 dol-lars this first full inaugural year. Equipmentand maintenance costs have been controlledby $486,000 dollars or 40% as compared tolast year. Postage and supplies costs company-wide have declined by greater than $385,000over the first ten months this year. Our year-to-date contributions are comparatively belowlast year by $305,000 dollars. However, we do

expect to match last year’s support efforts bycalendar year-end. Aside from our operating results analysis, wewill briefly glance at our investment portfolioresults. For the 10-month period endingOctober 31, 2019 our portfolio has unreal-ized gains of $12.7 million dollars or a 14.6%return. The portfolio has outperformed itsbenchmark of 13% by 1.6%. If this perform-ance continues through the balance of ourfiscal year this could very well afford usrecord breaking results. The Balance Sheet of the AKC still exhibitsplenty of financial strength and capacity. With $153.4 million dollars in Total Assetsand $84.1 million in Total Liabilities we aresuccessfully sustaining just over $69 million inTotal Net Assets, this remains unchangedfrom last quarter’s report and just under a$20 million dollar increase from ourDecember 2018 audited financial results. Thanks to everyone on the Board,Management and Staff, and the DelegateBody for contributing to these exceptionalresults throughout 2019! I look forward to providing you a full yearreport on 2019 at our next meeting in March.Enjoy this wonderful weekend ahead, and toall I wish a Happy Holidays and Healthy NewYear in 2020! Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Joe.

funds now and we are earmarking who isgoing to receive those funds running foroffice at the first of the year. Election is com-ing in the late fall of 2020, but we have tohave our donations out earlier than that inorder to help them impact their electioncampaign. We are strictly authorized for theFederal Election Commission to only look ata candidate's view on canine issues, and that'swhat we do in choosing those we support. Iwant to say something, and I am, Michael, Iam stealing something you said when youspoke this morning. He talked about howchildren can't speak for themselves. Yourdogs can't speak for themselves, and theydepend on us every day to protect them, andone of the ways that you can protect them isto support the PAC and support us in helpingto elect those who think like we do on legisla-tive issues. If you don't want to do the carica-ture, we're more than happy to just take adonation. I said to the Board at a meeting,"What we really need to say is trust us on this,we're protecting you and your dogs. Give usyour money." They thought that was a littledirect. Sheila is at her table outside – I don'tknow what we'd do without Sheila Goffe, sheis an amazing woman, and she will take yourdonations.

Ms. LaBerge: Thank you. Sheila needs tohear that. She works really hard for all of us,and loves the dogs as much as we do, and is agreat breeder herself. If she is busy you can
