The minutes of the June 13th, 2016 Delegatesmeeting were approved as published.

Three new member clubs were approved:Berger Picard Club of America;Hendersonville Kennel Club; and Irish Redand White Setter Association of America.

The September 2016 Chairman’s Report wasnot given at the meeting.Click here for the Chairman’s Report.

Mr. Sprung gave the President’s report asfollows:Yesterday was 9/11 and a great deal haschanged in each of our lives as a result of thatday. Many delegates and staff are new so let'sonce again share some of what occurred andAKC's accomplishments in this area. That morning, Ron and I were in the lobby ofthis very hotel, when Blackie came up and saidthat a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We walked over to the deserted bar area in thelobby where an elderly gentleman waswatching the news. As we approached, he saidto us, "My son called last night. One of ourplanes is missing and they're coming to getus." Then the second plane hit. We turnedaround; the man was gone. That day we were together – of 288 Delegatesin attendance, 93 are still serving. Naturally, the meeting bordered on chaotic. We huggedand reassured each other outwardly; insidemany of us felt fear and anger. There were

valid but opposing thoughts of what to do.After an agenda discussion and vote for thestanding committees, we adjourned, helpingone another begin going home or finding safehaven for the night. Tremendous thanks toPaula for her exceptional dedication helpingus reach loved ones. In reflecting upon the 9/11 anniversary, thethought that always resonates is the type ofspecial people that make up our community. Irecall how the DOGNY project came about, allowing the American Kennel Club to honorsearch and rescue dogs that helped in NewYork City, Pennsylvania and Washington andwill provide some behind the scenes facts. It was very much a shared success. DelegateTom Davies’ and the Springfield Kennel Clubstepped up as the very first sponsor, and manyclubs followed. FedEx, IAMS, J.P. Morgan andHartz became major corporate sponsors.Soon, other businesses heeded our call, andwe received help from many householdnames. It took until the following evening for me toarrive home. The Ladies Kennel Associationwas holding a meeting in my house, so onecould find me in the basement. CBS Radiobegan broadcasting a plea for the donation ofa portable x ray machine for rescue dogs thatwere hurt searching through the rubble. Iknew dog people could provide that, so I wentup the stairs and asked the ladies to post an online request to purchase an x ray machine.About nine p.m., a salesman called from West

Virginia and we were started. Our next challenge: transporting the x raymachine, cartons of film, aprons and gloves. So another request went out to relay theequipment to Ground Zero. Dozens of dogpeople called throughout the evening, and byearly morning the race was on. From WestVirginia to Maryland to Pennsylvania, endingup in New Jersey with Afghan Hound breedersBob and Angela DiNicola, who passed it off forthe final delivery.Luckily, AKC presented one of our first ACEawards to a member of the New York CityPolice Department’s K-9 Unit at theQueensboro Kennel Club, through thecourtesy of Linda Lacchia and Rey and ViolaBurgos. A call was made to LieutenantDonadio; he instructed us to have theequipment brought through the LincolnTunnel and to proceed on 11th Avenue untilwe were stopped. Indeed we were stopped, butallowed one phone call. Within minutes wewere surrounded by police and unmarked carswith sirens blasting, and escorted to the verycorner of Ground Zero. Just as the car wascoming to a stop, veterinarians from theSuffolk County SPCA came running andstarted to assemble the x ray machine. Weweren't there long enough to see it in use;with the smoke still rising we were escortedout of Ground Zero. But I knew then andthere: The American Kennel Club did theright thing. It was really the most emotionalmoment of my life. The streets lining our

departure had tens of thousands of peoplewaving flags and cheering us. But I knew a lotbetter -- they were cheering you, the AKCfamily.I had another thought: We could do more. Sothe idea for DOGNY evolved just two days after9/11, eventually raising over $3.5 milliondollars for search and rescue organizationsnationwide. With these funds the AKC CARCanine Support and Relief Fund was begun. The government chose to keep secret whichsearch and rescue organizations came to thethree cities with their dogs but staff researchedand identified over 90 amateur andprofessional organizations. Each organizationwas sent several thousand dollars as a thank-you and to defer their costs. After all, thiscould occur again -- where you live!Looking back, the project almost neverhappened. Daphna Straus was hired as aconsultant. Today she is our VP of BusinessDevelopment, and along with our legal team, began working through the maze of red tapefor the City to give us contractual permissionto display statues to commemorate the veryfirst anniversary of 9/11. For some unknownreason, the newly elected Bloombergadministration, taking over from everybody'shero, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, seemed toconcentrate on things other than the AKC --can you imagine? Almost two months into theproject, it was time to call Co Chair KarenLeFrak, and tell her about my frustration.Actually, I bitched a lot, saying this project may

SECRETARY’S PAGES

not go anywhere. Surprisingly, early the nextmorning I received a call from the FirstDeputy Mayor stating the City was ready tosign. After patting myself on the back ahundred times I mean, this was like going“Best” -- I called Karen to tell her about thiscoincidentally good news -- dead silence. "Canyou hear me?" There was more silence. "Okay, what's going on?" After my call the previousday, Karen walked over to Mayor Bloomberg'stownhouse and left a note on his kitchentable. We had to figure out how to transport 111 rawsculptures from the foundry to differentartists’ studios around the city, then have eachindividually packaged, picked up and broughtto a company to be mounted on bases. Wereached out to fancier Honi Reisman whoarranged a conference call with Ken May,Senior Vice President of Fed Ex. Again, AKCwas lucky, perhaps because we were doing theright thing. He said, "We can do this." but Imissed his meaning, as my response was, "Iknow you could, but can we pay for it?" Ken'sanswer was astounding. He said, "You'repaying for nothing. Your company's a hero. We're just going to help make it happen." Andthey did, providing tens of thousands ofdollars of free shipments and logistics.I'll also tell you about what was a guardedsecret for a while with another member of ourfamily. The Police Department called aboutsome of the approximately 300 dog teams whocame to New York and were being treated at

an animal hospital, but their owners werebeing charged, so I phoned a member of theirBoard to ask who I could speak with. Theresponse was, quote: "Dennis, I'll make you adeal. I will pay for the care of every single dog,if you keep it a secret between the two of us."Well, that deal is long over and that angel isTony Sosnoff, another example of the qualitypeople with whom you and I are blessed toshare our passion. The cooperation amongst clubs, fanciers, corporate America and the media wasextraordinary, growing into our largest publicoutreach up until that time. However, withoutpassionate dog people, it would have beensimply another Dennis idea.I’m going to stop my speech because I wantyou to take a good look at this statue. This is ahandsome German Shepherd in good coat, just what it should look like. But there's a lotof passion and emotion behind this statue. The coat is made up of the name, age, city andstate of every person in America who perishedon that day. I am very proud to tell you andagain thank the AKC's Board of Directors whoinstantly supported my vision for this publicart exhibition and fund raiser. RubensteinAssociates, American's premier PR firm, required a presentation before agreeing towork on the project. Midway through, theyproclaimed, "We're in." With their efforts,AKC benefited by a wide variety of mediaappearances. Sculptures bearing AKC's namethat were displayed for the first anniversary

still remain in some places: PACE University;here’s a photo from a few months ago showingthe statue still on display), the FireDepartment Museum, the VeteransAdministration Hospital, Purina Farms,Station One of the Portland Fire Department, and at AKC headquarters. Statues werepainted live on The Today Show duringnumerous segments, and the NASDAQ screenin Times Square featured our program. In Georgia, Governor Sonny Perdue unveileda bronze DOGNY statue at the State CapitolBuilding in Atlanta with Delegates Ann Wallin,Karen and Asa Mays, and Carmen Battagliarepresenting 32 clubs and associations. InOklahoma, Onofrio and four of our All BreedClubs dedicated a statue near the site of thebombing of the Federal building. A bronzeversion marks the entrance to the worldheadquarters of Hartz in New Jersey and onewelcomes visitors to our Operations Center inNorth Carolina.AKC was made appealing and relevant to thepublic from a canine perspective and a humanone. For shoppers and tourists, when SaksFifth Avenue blackened all but two of their 34windows for several weeks to commemoratethe anniversary, both windows displayed onlyDOGNY dogs. Broadway buffs saw a pair ofsculptures over a three month period in theheart of Shubert Alley, where two and a halfmillion people visit every week. In the sportsarena, we were fortunate that the three yearwait for a special event at Yankee Stadium was

handled in one week, and their organizationoffered DOGNY Day, at which 25,000 specialedition pinstripe "Help a Hero" toys weredonated by Hartz. A statue purchased bybreeder/exhibitor and former delegate AmyKiehl bears the signatures of the entire Yankeeteam. Major League Baseball as well as theNew York Mets organization and their owners, obedience exhibitors Fred and Judy Wilpon, were also sponsors. Plush mementos carryingAKC's branding appeared in over 12,000 storesacross the country. Some will recall that thePresident of Hartz, Robert Devine, attendedour meeting in September, 2002 as a guest ofthis body when he presented a check to RonMenaker for $775,000. Soon after, Hartzdonated an additional $500,000. Ron did agreat amount of work as co Chair throughoutthe entire DOGNY project.TFH published a commemorative book andafter the public art display Sotheby's auctionhouse donated their main gallery, along withthe services of Vice Chair Benjamin Dollar asAuctioneer. Famed columnist and dachshundfancier Liz Smith also donated her time asGuest Auctioneer, and graced us with morepublicity. This gives you a bit of history about DOGNYand its accomplishments during a time ofcrisis in our nation and the numerous reasonsto be proud of AKC, yourselves, your clubs, and the many special people in ourcommunity. Thank you.(Prolonged standing ovation)

Joe Baffuto, CFO, gave the financial report asfollows: Great day everyone. Thank you so much forattending here this morning. I'm delighted topresent the financial performance report ofthe American Kennel Club through August 31,2016. As AKC continues to take evolving stepsalong with future growth and we all begin toembark upon change, hopefully moving froma hot summer to a cool fall season, I'm pleasedto announce American Kennel Club's coreoperations have not changed from my lastreport and our successes are continuing intothe latter half of 2016. Let's begin byexamining our year-to-date summary ofresults. Total revenue of $43 million has beenoffset by total expenses of $38.6 million, whichreflects an operating income of $4.4 million, which is somewhat below, yet extremelysuccessful, to the comparative income of $5.7million at this time last year. Let's take adeeper dive into the details. In ourcomparison of year-to-date revenue, we are upby $2.8 million. This is an overall 7 percentincrease. What have been our most successful

drivers? Let's move further along down therevenue road. Our top revenue increases bydollar amounts include all registration items, including dogs, litters, pedigrees and ourcanine partner listings, amongst others, amounting to $1.5 million. Next, our royaltyand sponsorships have increased by more thanhalf a million dollars, and 25 percent. Also, our e-commerce programs have grown bygreater than $200,000 so far this 2016 year, which represents a 65 percent increase. Lastly, revenue generated from our marketplaceplatform has jumped by 52 percent, or$185,000 this year. Taking a year-over-yearcomparative analysis of our core registrationvolumes, we can see our outstanding successes. Our litter volume for the year so far is 151,000,an increase of 7 percent. Our dog registrationsare currently 359,000, which is 11 percentabove the eight-month period of 2015. Totalpedigrees are 165,000, which represents a 9percent increase. On the other side of ourincome statement, we will begin a comparisonof year-to-date expenses. We have recorded$38.6 million in expense so far this year. Thisis an increase of about $4 million from 2015.The details of cost increases that we'veincurred in 2016 include the following: Ourpayroll and benefits are up nearly $1.3 million. We currently now have just under 300 full-timeequivalent head count, which is about an 8percent increase from August of 2015. Wehave spent and accrued for an additional $1.1

million this year to support our growth officeand new revenue development throughresearch and marketing efforts. Our matchingcontributions to AKC CHF have increased by$230,000 over 2015. AKC continues to provideadditional financial support to theriogenologystudies and we have also spent additionalfunds relating to our investment managementsconsultants and performance along with oursuccessful licensing and royalty programs. Inaddition to our results from operations, Iwould like to provide some detail on thesuccess of our investment portfolio throughthe eight months of the fiscal year. Ourinvestments have yielded a 4.4 percentunrealized gain this year. These gains equateout to about $4.2 million on our balance sheetfor which I will provide some furthercomment shortly. Our relative benchmark forthe portfolio during the period was 3.9percent. So we have displayed anoutperformance by approximately 50 basispoints. The nonconsolidated balance sheet ofthe AKC at August 31 reflects $142 million intotal assets. Our cash and investment balancestotal more than 85 percent of these total assetsand this is the core financial strength of theAKC. Our total liabilities recorded were $67.8million and nearly 90 percent of thoseliabilities lie within our long-term pension andpost-retirement benefit obligations. Our netassets of $74.3 million have increased by nearly14 percent since August of last year. We aredoing well in our core, the financial markets

have done well, and both of these are a majorcontributing factor to the success we have hadthis year. Thank you very much for the chanceto discuss our outstanding results and pleasefeel free to reach out as the meetingconcludes. I will be available. Have a cool, colorful and enjoyable fall season with yourcanines and see you in Orlando.

The Chair thanked Mr. Baffuto and his stafffor their team effort.

Vice Chairman, Carl Ashby, was introduced toprovide information on AKC's PAC.

Mr. Ashby: Thank you, Dennis. On behalf ofthe AKC PAC, I would like to do two thingstoday. One is to thank Tom Powers for hisservice as a member of the AKC PoliticalAction Committee Board. We passed aresolution in his honor yesterday which I willbe presenting that later today. I also would like

to do is bring you up to date on where we arewith the President's Challenge. In March we kicked off that challenge and setsome goals for ourselves. I want to give you anupdate today on where we are. We have had alot of participation but we are short of ourgoal. As of yesterday we are at about $37,000.For a reference point, in 2012, which was thefirst year of the President's Challenge, weraised $45,000. In that challenge we had acouple of parent clubs who really did dig inand did a wonderful job in bringing moneyforward as a group. But today we need yourhelp. We want to exceed that 2012 numberand raise 50,000. There was a mailing thatwent out to all the club presidents earlier thisweek. Please contact them and remind themof the importance of the AKC PAC. Yourmoney is being used wisely. Yesterday weauthorized almost $20,000 for candidates inthis upcoming election that are favorable to usand that we believe can help our cause. So Iask you to go back and help us grow thePolitical Action Committee. It is a making afundamental difference in the life of our dogsand in our ability to influence legislation toprotect our rights as dog breeders and owners. I would like to do is to call your attention toRon Menaker's Chairman's report. You heardsome great numbers today about the AKC andhow we are moving in a positive direction. Weare in an extraordinarily strong position andwe see a lot of good trends in our numbers. The one area that we have great concern

about and which staff and your Board isfocused on is conformation. The Chairman'sreport speaks to the commitment. It gives yousome facts and data and it also gives you apositive story about the things that we arelooking to do collectively with you get peoplemore interested in that part of our sport, which is really the core of our registry. So Iurge you to take the time on the plane homeor in the car to read Ron’s report and tocirculate it with your clubs. Please know thatwe are very much tuned in to the issues ofconformation and the challenges that we arefacing, that our Clubs are facing and that wedon't plan to sit on our heels in that regard. So I urge you to take a look at Ron's report.Thank you.

The following Delegates spoke during NewBusiness:The Chair recognized Steven Gladstone, AKCDirector and Delegate for the WaterlooKennel Club, who spoke as follows:Thank you, Mr. President. Initially, thank you

for that wonderful presentation andrecollection of the DOGNY project. I honestlythink you are too modest. We know that wasyour project and you did a great job. Thankyou. What I would like to report on to you for just amoment, at the last meeting there were anumber of requests and discussion about theAKC Gazette and since we are not publishingit in print form, there was some requests thatperhaps we could just print it and be able tomail it to folks on a subscription basis. So Iasked the staff to come up with a bunch ofnumbers, and Gina (DiNardo) gave me all theinformation, I asked what it would cost andwhat would be the reasonable way to try anddeliver a printed copy of the Gazette, of thePDF file that we distribute printed and mailedon a subscription basis and I'm going to reportthat to you. Of course we have to start withhow many would we expect, because thatobviously affects the cost tremendously. I willtell you that when the Gazette stoppedpublishing there were approximately 20,000subscribers. If we got 500 requests forsubscriptions to print and mail, the annualcost, the subscription price to do that, wouldhave to be at least $150 a year, based on thequantity and the cost to do that. If we upped itto an expectation of 2,500, that still brings thecost in at around $85 a year. And even at 5,000we would still be at about $75 a year. So it isjust not a practical solution. But I wantedeveryone to know that we looked into it, but I

just don't think that it makes a lot of sense totry and deliver it that way. That's all I'm doingis reporting so you guys have someinformation about it. Thank you.

Mr. Sprung: Thanks for sharing those facts.

The Chair recognized Steven Hamblin,Delegate for the Pacific Coast Pekingese Club, who spoke as follows:Mr. President, the Pacific Coast PekingeseClub, is celebrating our 100 years as a club. Wehaven't spent our 100 years with AKC yet, thatis coming in 2017, but we are very proud thata specialty club has actually survived for 100years, and we are very eager at this point onthe west coast, in Los Angeles specifically, tocontinue to find members and continue toencourage members to come in and breedand show, and I think we are very successfullydoing that. To celebrate our 100 years, wecreated some memorabilia. We updated ourlogo so that it reflects the pride that we have inthe organization that we have now and as aclub we wanted to present you and Mr.Crowley with copies of our framed logo andpins that we had made for our club. We askthat when you wear the pin you wear it withpride and that when you look at the logo thatyou actually think back at 100 years of dogsports that we have all been celebrating andwe look forward to 100 years coming.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, and we accept it on

behalf of the great American Kennel Club.

The Chair recognized Gretchen Bernardi,Delegate for the Mississippi Valley KennelClub who spoke as follows:First, ditto to Steve's remarks about yourleadership. You are appreciated more thanyou know. I am speaking now for the Bylaws Committee. It remains the sense of this Delegate body thatthose judges among us, not be permitted tocharge a fee in addition to expenses for theirservices when they judge, but our Delegatejudges continue to judge our dogs, to givevalue to purebred dogs by their work and toeducate themselves in order to pursue morebreeds at their own expense. But when they doapply for more breeds, they must pay the same$25 per dog fee that all judges must pay. Theonly difference is that our own Delegatejudges can never recoup that expense throughfuture fees. A non-Delegate judge can usuallyrecoup those fees in a couple of weekends. The Bylaws Committee feels this is an unfairburden and we are requesting the Board ofDirectors to exempt Delegate judges from thisrequirement. In order for the Board to get asense of the Delegates' feeling on this issue, Iwould like to call for a nonbinding resolutionvote on this issue.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you. We can certainly dothat. The question before the body is anonbinding resolution to exempt Delegate

judges from paying a $25 per breedapplication fee. All those in favor, please raise your hand.Thank you. All those opposed? Thank you. Of course the Board is here and witnessedthere is a large majority in favor. It can bediscussed at the next meeting. Thank you.

The Chair recognized Sherry Wallis, Delegatefor the Akita Club of America, who spoke asfollows:The deadline for the next issue of Perspectivesis going to be October 15th and our articleseditor for that is Monica Stoner. So if you haveanything that you want to communicate aboutwhat's going on or you have items thatconcern you, I would ask you to please e-mailyour article to her by the deadline. Thank you.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you. We appreciate that. The Chair recognized Barbara Mann,Delegate for the Dayton Dog Training Club, who spoke as follows:I'm going to start this by asking the Delegatesa few really stupid questions and see what sortof response I get. I would like to note byraising your hand, if you own at least onepurebred AKC registered dog. Okay. Howmany of you are proud of that AKC purebredregistered dog? That's on the basis that theyare behaving themselves of course. How manyof you would like other people to know howproud you are of your AKC registered dog?

Again, a little bit less here. How many of youwould be willing to buy a T-shirt that says all ofthis on it, so that you can wear it when you goto the grocery store and let people out thereknow how important purebred dogs are andhow much you appreciate them? Now, the other thing that you might needwhen you wear this to the grocery store andsomebody asks you why do you have apurebred dog instead of rescuing a dog from ashelter, you would like to have a little elevatorspeech that you can tell them, this is why I owna purebred dog instead of a rescue dog. Ormaybe you own both. I do. I actually have oneof each. But it would be really nice to havethat. This is not the first meeting where Ibrought this up. It will probably not be the lastmeeting where I bring it up unless the nexttime I can say thank you for giving us thatpossibility of a T-shirt.

Mr. Sprung: They are being designed, so youcan thank us.

The Chair recognized Tom Powers, Delegatefor the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills, whospoke as follows:I have an announcement that I'm kind ofexcited about. The Kennel Club of BeverlyHills and NBC Sports have come to terms andNBC will be taping our show in March 2017for airing on USA Network on Easter Sundayand then two runs following it on the NBCNetwork in the next couple of weeks. So I want

to invite you all to sunny southern Californiain March and please bring your dogs andcome to the show.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you.

The Chair recognized Douglas Rapport,Delegate for the Irish Terrier Club of America, who spoke as follows:On behalf of myself and the entire IrishTerrier Club of America we very much want toextend our thank you to the AKC for all oftheir help and support in the untimely murderof Delegate, Past President of the Irish TerrierClub of America and my friends Bruce andNancy Petersen. Many of you have read aboutit. It was an absolute tragedy and the AKCreally stepped up and helped in many, manydifferent ways during this time. So thank you.

The Chair recognized Susan Sholar, Delegatefor the Black Russian Terrier Club of America, who spoke as follows:I know at many meetings we have haddiscussions on how we are going to bring newpeople into the dog show world. Many of youare aware of the fact that I have, for a year anda half now, been involved with a groomingcertification program and I gave classes allover the country at the grooming trade shows. This last month I am starting to get reportsfrom people who have been to my classessaying I changed their life, they bought a showdog and they are showing it. So I'm very

pleased to report that.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you.

The Chair recognized Ann Wallin, Delegatefor the Atlanta Kennel Club, who spoke asfollows: I'm speaking on behalf of the All-Breeds Clubs Committee. I want to recognizeone of our very long-time devoted members,Crecia Closson, who has now announced thatshe is going into retirement and we just wantto thank her for the many years of hard workand contribution that she has made to ourcommittee. She will be greatly missed. (Applause)

The Chair recognized Patricia Laurans,Delegate for the German Wirehaired PointerClub of America, who spoke as follows:I would like to give a little update on thetrailer project. But before I do that, I wouldjust like to give you an update on what hashappened in the last several weeks. Lastmonth we saw the success of the MadisonCounty, Indiana, trailer deployed on-sitewithin 12 hours of the tornado hitting theKokomo area. In contrast, we saw sheltersflooded in Louisiana seemingly without abackup plan. The good news is that now wehave clubs working for a trailer in BatonRouge and we are trying to get one for NewOrleans as well. We have seen again thathaving the equipment in the hands ofemergency managers before disaster strikes is

by far the most effective way to help. In thethree years we have had this program, 51trailers have been donated and are in place intheir own communities. Six are completed andwill be transferred soon. 23 clubs are activelyworking to get more funds and more trailersand I have had at least three people talk to meover the weekend, about other trailers thattheir areas are talking about. We have had 341clubs participating, over a million dollars indonations from the clubs and individuals, and$250,000 from AKC Reunite. The total fundsraised, is $1,266,506, to help people in need.We thank you and we thank your clubs, andplease continue to support the project.

The Chair recognized David Hopkins,Delegate for the English Springer SpanielField Trial Club of Illinois, who spoke asfollows:I have two matters to address. First, followingup on Pat Laurans' remarks, the 51st trailerhas been delivered in Illinois about a weekago. It is the first AKC Reunite disaster trailerin Illinois. Hopefully we will receive more inthe future. It is going to the Will CountyEmergency Management Agency which isbased in Joliet, Illinois, about 40 miles south ofChicago. Nine clubs contributed and anindividual to the sponsorship of this trailer. Iwould be remiss if I didn't tick off the names. There are five local clubs in Illinois: TheSiberian Husky Club of Greater Chicago;Kishwaukee Kennel Club; Golden Retriever

Club of Illinois; the Prairie Land StandardSchnauzer Club of Central Illinois; and theEnglish Springer Spaniel Field Trial Club ofIllinois. In terms of national organizations, there is the English Cocker Spaniel Club ofAmerica, the Standard Schnauzer Club ofAmerica; the Alaskan Malamute Club ofAmerica; and the English Springer SpanielField Trial Association Foundation. There isalso an individual by the name of Kate Weemswho gave a contribution in memory ofRoberta Rothenbach who is a Yorkie fancier. And we could not have arrived at this happystate right now without the tremendous helpof the AKC Reunite staff. Tessa Johnson fromthe staff is the one that shepherded this onethrough and when the next raise time comesaround, Tom Sharp, if you are around, pleasebe sure that Tessa gets the highestcompensation upwards for which she isotherwise eligible. I have a second matter I would like to address, and here I'm wearing my hat as Chair of theLegal Outreach Committee. I just want to say afew words and to make some requests. TheLegal Outreach Committee has more or lessquietly been functioning for several years andwe have worked on a number of projects. Weare now focusing loosely on a speakers bureau. There may be opportunities with barassociation sponsored seminars, CLEsymposia, conferences, what have you, wherewe will be invited to present a speaker, and weare not so much focused on trying to ascertain

who in the Delegate body is a constitutionallaw expert to go joust with the animal rightspeople, we are really looking for, you mightsay, ancillary topic speakers. If you are anestate planner or work in the legal field, in thefamily law area, you might be able to talkabout estate planning in connection with pets, pet trusts, pet custody, the Domestic ViolenceAct protections for pets, other topics could beparameters for tax-exempt organizations, andthe list is endless. And there may be even somenon-lawyers in the Delegate body that mightbe able to help us here. Sheila Goffe is verymuch in communication with a senior partnerat a major Washington law firm where we havesome connections that may be orchestrating amajor legal conference next year and we dohave an opportunity to help pick the speakerpanel. If you are a lawyer or you work in anancillary field and have an area of expertisethat might lend itself to these efforts, pleasetalk to anybody on the committee: Bill Feeney,Alan Kalter from the Board, Sheila Goff fromthe staff, Barbara Penny, Martha Feltenstein, myself, and Jay Wax [AKC Senior VicePresident and General Counsel) joined in as aguest in the last session. One other thing that Iwould mention if you are a lawyer or a judge, human judge, not a dog judge, and if you areaware of animal law sections, committees, whathave you, with state, national or local bars, Iurge you to consider joining. The cost isrelatively nominal and you may pick up oninformation that is very useful to us. Last

January, on a Friday afternoon, I learned thata local suburb of Chicago was going toreconsider its specific -- breed-specificordinance. Within 24 business hours SheilaGoff had a letter into the powers that be,which was 24 hours before the crucial meetingand the village elders of Lincolnwood, Illinoisgot it right. That all came about because Ipicked up on some information by virtue ofserving on the Animal Law Committee of ourstate bar. If you are a lawyer, think aboutjoining just to pick up on this information andalso talk to any one of us on the Committee.Thank you.

The Chair recognized Walter O'Brien,Delegate for Macon Kennel Club, who spokeas follows:On Friday at the dog shows over inBridgewater, and yes, I did drive all the wayfrom Georgia to the shows, I had the privilegeto meet members of the AKC staff that wereover there on a field trip to see how things goat dog shows. I had a wonderful talk with thosemembers of staff and it helped provideperspective to the work they are doing andalso helped energize me to the work that allare doing as members of the AKC team. Iwould publicly like to thank the President forhis support in sponsoring the trip for thosemembers of staff who came over to the show. Itwas wonderful and I want to thank you very, very much.

Mr. Sprung: Absolutely. It was my pleasure.

The Chair recognized Gloria Marshall,Delegate for Bayshore Companion Dog Club, who spoke as follows:I was sitting here saying to myself should I orshould I not get up but I know I have to gowith my heart. Your speech was heartwarming,Mr. Sprung. Your speech and your actions onbehalf of our dogs 15 years ago wasoutstanding. However, 15 years later AKCscheduled their meetings on 9/11. I know thissounds strange and I may have no fansagreeing with me, but I think it is a conflict inphilosophy and I am only hoping, because thiswas done once before when I was a Delegate, that in the future consideration could be givento all of those who lost their lives on 9/11 andschedule perhaps a day later or a day before to

have your meeting. On a positive note, as a member of an agilitypredominantly run club, I would like toapplaud AKC for their really outstanding, quick response in doing away temporarily andsuspending the chute for the agility trials. Iknow there were a lot of signatures on thepetition that was sent to you, but the speed inyou doing this to keep our dogs out of harm'sway is greatly appreciated especially byBayshore Companion Dog Club.

Hearing no further business, the Chairadjourned the meeting. (The meeting concluded at 11: 41 a.m.)

The opinions expressed by the speakers may notnecessarily reflect those of The American KennelClub.
