Welcome!

We’re glad God has called you here today! We pray that you’ll encounter God in worship, and hope that you’ll be with us again soon! If you haven’t met our pastor, please be sure to say hello either before or after the service. We also hope you’ll stay after worship for coffee and fellowship in the Gathering Area.

We love having children in worship, even if they occasionally make a joyful noise! Most services include a children’s sermon and special children’s bulletins. There are also activity bags by the worship space entrance that your child can use. A professionally staffed nursery for infants and preschool-aged children is available during worship and the education hour for parents who need it.

If you have special needs, we will do our best to help meet them. Our sound system is compatible with many hearing assistance devices. Large-print worship bulletins with the full text of the service are available from the ushers. Print copies of the scriptures and of the sermon are also available. The sermon is also on our website: www.ctlelgin.org. If you have mobility issues, let an usher know, and communion can be brought to you. We can easily remove chairs anywhere in the worship space to provide extra room for wheelchairs and walkers.

The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is celebrated every Sunday. We practice open communion, which means that all who believe Christ is truly present in this meal are welcome at the table, no questions asked. It is Christ’s table, and it is Christ himself who invites you. Come forward as the ushers direct. You’ll be offered the bread, the body of Christ, which you should eat as soon as you receive it. (If you need gluten-free bread, simply ask the minister, who can offer you that.) You may then drink either from the common cup, which contains wine, or take an individual cup from the tray. The individual cups in the center of the tray contain non-alcoholic grape juice. Empty cups may be placed in the tray that follows the server. Children are welcome at the Table, and we don’t have a specific age requirement for communing. If you’d like your child to commune, please let the pastor know. If you or your child would prefer a blessing instead of communion, please come forward with everyone else, and simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate this.

Do you have a prayer need? Individual prayer is available. Simply go to the chair at the side after you commune, and someone will be there to pray with you. You may also write prayer requests in the book outside the worship space entrance. If you’d like to have a number of people learn about a request quickly, you can send an e-mail to [email protected]. (Be aware that these emails are delivered immediately. Please use discretion in sharing details.) You can also send an e-mail to the pastor at [email protected].

For more information about the ministries we’re involved in here at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church (CTL), visit the Hospitality Table near the entrance to the building, or go to our website, www.ctlelgin.org.

We ask that everyone sign and pass to your neighbor the Get Acquainted Sheet that is in the black pad at the end of each row. When it reaches the other end of the row, pass it back the other direction, and look to see who your neighbors are…it’s a great way for us all to get to know one another! Please be aware that pictures may be taken during the service and at various church events. These photos may be used in a variety of written and electronic materials, including our website. If you do not want your picture used, please notify Linda Gagnon, Office Administrator, in writing.

Gathering: The Holy Spirit assembles us as the People of God …

God hears every prayer—the prayer of the outsider as well as the prayer of the insider. The attentive nature of our God is evident as God comes to us again and again in the word and in the supper. “Ascribe to the LORD the honor due the holy name; bring offerings and enter the courts of the LORD.” Do it today.

Word: God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song …

Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures 1 Kings 8:22–23, 41–43

R A reading from the First Book of Kings.

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. He said, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart…. Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because of your name—for they shall hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm—when a foreigner comes and prays toward this house, then hear in heaven your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built.

At the end of the reading:

R Word of God, word of life. A Thanks be to God!

Psalm 96: 1-9 (Sung to the tune “Duke Street”)

1. Sing to the Lord new songs of praise, Let all the earth sing to the Lord;

Sing out and praise God’s holy Name, Proclaim good news with one accord.

2. Declare God’s glory far and wide, God’s wondrous acts and holy law;

For God is greatly to be praised And then beheld with greatest awe.

3. Magnificent God’s presence here, With splendid courts in glorious light;

Ascribe to God all peoples, tongues, Ascribe to God all power and might.

4. Ascribe all honor to the Lord; Bring gifts into the holy place.

In holy beauty worship God; Bow down with awe before God’s face.

Reading from the New Testament Galatians 1:1–12

R A reading from Galatians.

Paul an apostle—sent neither by human commission nor from human authorities, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—and all the members of God’s family who are with me,

To the churches of Galatia:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to set us free from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed!

Am I now seeking human approval, or God’s approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ. For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

At the end of the reading:

R Word of God, word of life. A Thanks be to God!

The Assembly stands to greet the Good News of Jesus.

Gospel Acclamation “Halle, Halle, Hallelujah” Hymnal 172

Gospel Luke 7:1–10

P This is the Good News of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. A Glory to you, O Lord!

After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.” And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he

comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

At the end of the reading:

P The gospel of the Lord. A Praise to you, O Christ!

The Acclamation is sung once again. The Assembly is seated.

Dialogue

P The Lord be with you. A And also with you. P Lift up your hearts! A We lift them up to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God! A It is right to give God thanks and praise!

Preface P It is indeed right to give you our thanks and praise, O God, and to tell of your salvation from

day to day and declare your glory and your marvelous works to all. You made the heavens and established the earth, and revealed yourself through your law and prophets to be a God of glory and strength who answers the cries of your people.

Though we were not worthy to receive you, for we turned our backs on your grace and limped off after worthless other gods, you came to us in your child, Jesus, speaking the word of healing and forgiveness. When we turned against him, he gave himself into our hands as a revelation of your self-sacrificing love, and when we crucified him, you raised him from the dead, and sent down your Spirit in fire to heal us and set us free from this evil age.

Therefore, with hearts full of gratitude, we sing joyfully, giving thanks to you, our Father, at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We join our voices with John XXIII, the Martyrs of Uganda, Boniface, Seattle, Columba, Aidan, Bede, and with all your holy ones of all times and places. With earth and all its creatures, with sun, moon, and stars, with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your Name, and join their unending hymn:

Thanksgiving at the Table

P You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation.

This same Lord Jesus, in the night in which he was betrayed, took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

P For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death

until he comes. A Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

P Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we ought, but as we are able. We ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving, and with your Word and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints.

To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. A Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Assembly joins in the prayer that Jesus taught us. You may use these words or a version more familiar to you.

P Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us A Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Invitation to Communion

P Christ invites you to a place of honor at this banquet. Welcome to the feast! A Thanks be to God!

A Amen.

Commemorations for the Week

Monday, June 3, 2013 John XXIII, Bishop of Rome, died 1963 When elected pope, the former Angelo Roncalli was expected to be a short-term caretaker. He showed great spirit, though, and convened the Second Vatican Council which helped bring great changes to Roman Catholic and other churches.

Monday, June 3 The Martyrs of Uganda, died 1886 On June 3, 1886, thirty-two young men were burned to death for refusing to renounce Christianity. The confident manner in which these Christians went to their deaths contributed to a much stronger Christian presence in Uganda.

Wednesday, June 5 Boniface, Bishop of Mainz, missionary to Germany, martyr, died 754 Boniface was a native of England who became a Benedictine monk and was called to missionary work among the Vandal tribes of Germany. With fellow workers, he established churches and schools, and he also worked to reform the church.

Friday, June 7 Seattle, chief of the Duwamish Confederacy, died 1866 Noah Seattle led a coalition of tribes, and convinced them to live peacefully with encroaching white settlers. When he became a Roman Catholic, he held morning and evening prayer with his tribe. The city of Seattle is named for him.

Sunday, June 9 Columba, died 597; Aidan, died 651; Bede, died 735; renewers of the church These three monks from the British Isles helped keep the light of learning alive during the Middle Ages. Columba founded three monasteries off the coast of Scotland. Aidan was a pastor who led people to works of charity. The Venerable Bede was a Bible translator, historian, and hymnwriter.

Speak the Word

Americans spend $12 billion each year on self-help materials. We purchase books, videos, and audio recordings in an effort to feel better about ourselves. We want to slim down, bulk up, and lower our cholesterol. We want to improve our self-image, our marriage, and our job. Behind all this lies a nagging sense of inadequacy or dis-ease.

A centurion asks Jesus to heal his slave but is afraid to approach him. He sends Jewish elders to plead his case. They recount the centurion’s love and generosity. They tell Jesus, “He is worthy of having you do this for him” (Luke 7:4). He even paid to build their synagogue.

The centurion feels differently. He says to Jesus, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof” (v. 6). Instead of recounting for Jesus his list of accomplishments or his credentials as a leader in the Roman army, he simply says, “You are someone in authority and I need your help.” We don’t normally think of that as a prayer, but it is.

We come to Christ today not with our resume or our list of accomplishments. Nor do we come with the record of our failures. In truth, none of us is worthy or unworthy of what God gives. We come to God not looking at ourselves at all. We lean instead on the power and authority of Christ. In Christ we encounter the healing and forgiveness of God. We come to be made whole. Ours is the faith of the centurion: “only speak the word” (v. 7) and we will know healing. Christ does speak the word. The word is grace—God’s grace. The word is love—God’s love. The word is forgiveness—God’s forgiveness—spoken to us. And it is enough.
