*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP*Pastor Michael Rothaar

In mid-April there was a bold action of Christian witness to the world in the face of crushing human need. It also served as a powerful testimony to the work of the Holy Spirit in pushing the global Christian communion in the direction of Jesus' prayer in John 17:20-22: that his followers "all may be one ...so that the world may believe" in God the Father and his only-begotten son Jesus.

Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic communion, visited the Aegean island of Lesbos alongside Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, as well as Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the Church of Greece. They came to give a united Christian message thanking the Greek people for welcoming migrants and highlighting the plight of refugees. (The complete text of their joint message can be found at http://www.indcatholicnews.com/news.php?viewStory=29863)

In a gesture that came as a surprise to the news media (but had been proposed by a Vatican aide, enthusiastically endorsed by the Jesuit pope, and carefully negotiated through diplomatic channels prior to the visit), the pope invited three Muslim families -- six adults and six children, all originally from Syria -- to join him on his chartered flight back to Rome, where they will be resettled by a Catholic agency. (One commentator mentioned that it had been a long time since a papal flight included a crying baby right behind him.) In comments on the flight home, the pope urged Europe to not only welcome refugees but better integrate them into society, so they are not left in ghettos where they can become prey to radicalization.

Many refugees wept at Francis' feet as he and the two Orthodox leaders approached them at the Moria refugee detention center on Lesbos, where they greeted 250 people, or about 10% of the current number at the center, individually. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have migrated to Europe, but a recent agreement is causing them to be held in Greece until such time as they can be resettled in Turkey.

Our own communion, through the Lutheran World Federation, is also deeply involved in this crisis. The five-year armed conflict in Syria has pushed an estimated 4.6 million people into neighboring countries as refugees, and displaced another 6.6 million internally, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In Iraq, around 3.2 million people have been displaced within the country, which is experiencing increased sectarian violence and attacks by extremist groups. The militant group Islamic State (ISIS) expanded their activities from Syria to Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, and have victimized Sunni Muslims as well as driving out non-Islamic minorities, the largest number being Christians, but also including Yazidis and others. Refugees fled north to Kurdistan, but have had to look beyond for support.

In Dohuk, northern Iraq, LWF has provided around 50,000 internally displaced people with relief goods, including cooking and sanitation kits, shelter and water, education and trauma counselling. Support has also gone to Iraqis who fled the country and found shelter in churches in the Jordanian capital, Amman. At the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, where nearly 80,000 Syrians reside, the LWF-run Peace Oasis psychosocial center offers peace-building activities to children and youth. LWF supports Syrian refugees living in Jordanian host communities with food, shelter and school rehabilitation.

The American fundraising agency, Lutheran World Relief, is accepting contributions that can be designated for the agencies providing relief during what has been described as the world's greatest humanitarian crisis since World War II. In addition, LWR has distributed about $7 million dollars worth of Mission Quilts, Baby Care Kits, School Kits, and Personal Care Kits which have been made or assembled by congregations of the ELCA. For more information about how to donate, see lwr.org, and click on the "Crisis in Syria" link.

Visioning Task Force at CTL

Some may be wondering just what's happening at CTL and just what the Visioning Task Force and Council are doing. Is progress being made? Definitely! We are planning opportunities for everyone to hear and discuss the same information.

Over the next several weeks the Visioning Task Force will be contacting congregation members individually, seeking input regarding their vision for CTL's future. Members will have an opportunity to participate in the process. The congregation as a whole will meet to discuss plans for our future.

*GET INVOLVED*

It's impossible to be involved in all situations, but there's no excuse not to be involved in something, somewhere, somehow, with someone. Make an ounce of difference.

Richelle E. Goodrich, "Smile Anyway: Quotes, Verse, & Grumblings for Every Day of the Year"

Kids Hope USA

The year has flown by! Our end of the year party will be held this month. The kids are really looking forward to that! They'll have food they enjoy and get to spend time with one another and the mentors. Prayer Partners will be invited and introduced as "friends. It seems amazing that we're concluding our fourth year at Hillcrest. Carri has had the same child the whole time! A couple mentors have been meeting with their children for only a short time; others have been mentoring the same children for two or more years. No matter how long they've been meeting, all would agree that it's time well spent. The kids know that each week they'll meet with their mentors for one hour of undivided adult attention. One little girl has blossomed from the child who hid behind her mentor and wouldn't greet new people to the child who throws herself at other mentors and gets upset when she doesn't see them.

Talk to a KH mentor. Listen to their enthusiastic stories and learn about the program. We always need more mentors. Consider joining the CTL mentors as we reach out and serve in our community. If you can't be a mentor, you can still participate in the program as a Prayer Partner. Contact Jeanne T or Carri N if you have questions or concerns. Henrietta N, Ann K, Patty H, Diane B, Karin K, Tom J, Jeanne, and Carri would all be happy to talk to you!

Registration for September 2016 Diakonia Program Has Begun

Diakonia is a two-year process of spiritual formation. This process is a way of equipping Gods people for service in parish and neighborhood ministries. The primary theme and focus of the diakonia experience is the word of Jesus in scripture.

How is diakonia structured? The diakonia curriculum consists of twelve courses, six per academic year.

How much does diakonia cost?

Tuition: Tuition will be $360 (each year for the two-year program). Tuition may be paid for the entire year or at the start of each class. Diakonia also has a financial aid program.

Books: Actual costs vary from course to course, but instructors try to provide materials for $25 or less per course.

Retreats: The number of retreats is determined by year (normally there is one). Recent retreats have cost participants approximately $65 per weekend.

Fees: A nonrefundable registration fee of $25 is required at the time of registration. An additional fee of $25 at the conclusion of the program covers graduation expenses, including the presentation of a commemorative diakonia cross.

More Information is available by visiting

http://www.mcselca.org/congregation/leadership/diakonia, where you and your congregation member can find a more complete definition of diakonia, a course description, a registration form, and a current listing of diakonia sites. If you need additional information, contact Carolyn Doughty at 773-583-0320.

Mission Builders

We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.

Mission Builders, in thankfulness for all God has provided, use their God-given skills to help ELCA congregations, schools, camps, and social ministry organizations construct or improve their facilities. While their hands do Gods work and provide housing for ministries, their hearts and voices share their faith and build up the body of Christ.

Jeanne and I have very good friends who have been called by God in their retirement years to be ELCA Mission Builders. It has been an amazing blessing in their lives. You can learn more by going to: www.elcamissionbuilders.org They have asked that we pray that God will raise up more "Builders" because the needs are so great. Arlyn T

Praise God in His holy house of worship,

praise Him under the open skies;

Praise Him for his acts of power,

praise Him for his magnificent greatness;

Praise Him with a blast on the trumpet,

praise Him by strumming soft strings;

Praise Him with castanets and dance,

praise Him with banjo and flute;

Praise Him with cymbals and a big bass drum,

praise Him with fiddles and mandolin.

Read Bishop Eaton's April Column in "Living Lutheran"

Why? In her April column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton asks if we can answer the question why? She says knowing the why is important as the church begins to engage in conversation about its future directions and priorities. Read her column at http://www.livinglutheran.org/2016/04/can-answer-question-2/.

Travel to Sicily and Italy with the Tolzmanns

The Tolzmanns are planning our annual group trip. We'll leave November 1, 2016 for a twelve-day trip to Sicily and Italy. We'll spend five days sightseeing in Selinunte, Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Siracusa, Mt. Etna, and Taormina before taking a ferry to Messina, Italy. Then we'll travel along the coast from the toe of the boot to beautiful Sorrento. We'll explore Pompeii before going into Rome where we'll tour Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel. We'll view the Basilica of St. Peter and tour the Papal Basilicas of St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran and St. Paul's Outside the Wall. We visit the remnants of "Ancient" Rome, the Catacombs, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and much more. We'll have a great guide who will be with us the entire trip.

We'd be delighted to have you join us for this great adventure. Call Jeanne T for information.

Be a Blessing at Food for Greater Elgin

It is a blessing we are able to offer our clients the ability to shop at our Pantry twice a month!

In the first week, we have seen record-breaking numbers! The good news is - we are extending our services and able to reach more families in need.

We are in need of additional helping hands to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible and our clients are given the time needed to shop and receive important information about additional community services they may need. We seem to need help with Monday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings food distribution shifts. Please feel free to email me your availability or please feel free to register online at http://www.foodforgreaterelgin.org/volunteer/ . Direct your e-mail to Claudia VanDelinder [email protected] .

You have been such an integral part of our family. It is your dedication and commitment that makes this vital community need sustainable.

Thank you!!

Do you know about Simply Giving?

Simply Giving is a tool that makes it possible never to forget our offering or get behind because we were on vacation or out of town. It is very helpful in our mission and to our finance persons to know our financial gifts are there without fail. Just contact the Financial Secretary, Carol C, and she can arrange for your offering to the mission of our Lord being taken from whatever bank account you choose.

Jeanne and I have used Simply Giving for about 20 years and find it a wonderful way to guarantee our gifts are systematically donated every week. It took a bit of time to get accustomed to letting the offering plate pass us on Sundays, but we know God and the church can count on these gifts. We use our offering envelopes for special offerings and when we want to support a specific ministry or cause. Talk to Carol, it is a great program offered to us.--Pastor T

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! We thank all those who are generous and faithful stewards of God's gifts. We are all stewards, whether we know it or not. We also thank the Council who faithfully monitors expenses, yet not to the detriment of our mission to be Centered in Christ and Reach out to Care.

Mark Allan Powell writes in Giving to God: "In the Bible, sometimes God prospers people and increases their wealth. In other cases, people are told to sell their possessions and give their money away. I have no way of knowing what God might do in your case, but I think I can promise you this: if you put God in charge of your finances, your life will be better, not worse. When we put God in charge of any area in our lives, our lives get better, not worse."

Prayerful Humor

Over at Fortitude Holiness Tabernacle, Dexter Rice, the Sunday school teacher, was telling his class the story of the Prodigal Son. Wishing to emphasize the resentful attitude of the elder brother, he laid stress on this part of the parable.

After describing the rejoicing of the household over the return of the wayward son, Dexter spoke of one who, in the midst of the festivities, failed to share in the jubilant spirit of the occasion. "Can anybody in the class," he asked, "tell me who this was?"

Nine-year-old Olivia Crombie had been listening sympathetically to the story. She waved her hand in the air. "I know!" she said beamingly. "It was the fatted calf."

Scrip Fundraising

Simply return an order form with your check to the church on Sunday. You will receive a new order form each week. You may pick up your order the following Sunday at the church.

We encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful benefits offered by this on-going fundraiser. If you have questions, please talk to Mary N 847-828-0027 or Dorothy G 847-888-4484.
