Today’s speakers are: Russell Baxley. A demonstrated leader, Baxley has earned a reputation for being both a skilled
negotiator and a straight shooter. His strong belief in transparency coupled with his ability to convey complex business
issues has helped him and the leadership team navigate the ever-changing healthcare landscape with the support of physi-
cians and staff.
Over the past 12 months he’s successfully led efforts to recruit much-needed primary care and specialty providers; moved
forward with plans to develop a medical campus in Okatie—opening in 2019; and, developed a telemedicine program to
include urgent care e-visits. In addition, under his leadership the hospital has earned designations and accolades for infec-
tion prevention; Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Center of Distinction designation for maternity care; The Joint Commission’s dis-
ease-specific certification for total hip and total knee replacement; the Leapfrog Group’s “A” rating for hospital safety; and,
a four-star rating from the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).
A Johnsonville, SC native, Baxley received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Clemson University and his
Masters of Healthcare Administration from the University of South Carolina. He has held roles as chief operating officer,
assistant chief financial officer and director of development in small- and mid-size hospitals in both South Carolina and
Texas. He also served as director of operations and finance for a large family medicine practice and medical spa in Columbia,
SC. Baxley is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and actively involved in community and professional organizations and activities throughout his career. He serves on the Board of Directors for Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce, Good Neighbor Free Medical Clinic of Beaufort and YMCA of Beaufort.
Deborah P. Schuchmann is currently Associate Vice President & Chief Development Officer at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
She has over fifteen years of experience working in development, mostly in healthcare. Schuchmann started her career as
an educator in the public school system and segued into the world of healthcare and business as a staff development in-
structor at the local community hospital, The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia. During her tenure, she
received a master of Healthcare Administration from Mercer University, Atlanta, Georgia.
After a brief move to Mobile, Alabama, she returned to Macon and to The Medical Center where the door to professional
fundraising opened. Offered the newly approved role as Major Gifts and Planned Giving Officer, Schuchmann, found her
niche of utilizing her skills as an educator and ability to inspire others and build positive relationships. She is past President of the Georgia Association of Development Professionals, an entity of the Georgia Association of Healthcare. She has served as a board member of United in Pink (a charity dedicated to helping Breast Cancer Survivors) and Save-a-Pet and has served on numerous fundraising committees. Currently she serves on the board of The South Carolina Hospital Association of Development Professionals and is a member of Sea Island Rotary in Beaufort.
Schuchmann is also an artist and enjoys painting “en plein air” (outside). She has participated in painting workshops
throughout the country and France and Italy.
