During the camp, we partici-

pated in activities such as the

soap-making workshop, eti-

quette workshop, VIA plan-

ning, and visit to the Singa-

pore History Gallery and Sin-

gapore Art Museum.

The activity that I enjoyed the

most was the soap-making

workshop as I like chemistry.

Soap-making, also known as

Saponification, is a chemical

reaction which occurs when

oil and an alkali is mixed.

Firstly, we poured sodium hy-

droxide pellets into a beaker of

distilled water and stirred it

until the pellets dissolved.

Then, oil was added to the

mixture as we continued stir-

ring.

Sec 3 Camp 2014 - Camp Metamorphosis

Lastly, we poured the mixture

into the moulds and added

colourings. It was an enrich-

ing experience and I would

like to try soap-making again.

I liked the Singapore Art Mu-

seum too as it was rather intri-

guing. One of the artworks

which I found quite interest-

ing was the ‘Forefinger’ art

installation. Four ‘finger-like’

objects lie on the floor and

they symbolise Vietnamese

people cutting off their fingers

during the Vietnam War so

that they would not have to

fight in it. This visit has

helped me develop a better

appreciation for art.

This year’s O Level results saw a dip in quality with a L1B5

aggregate of 15.9. Overall, there were 6 girls who received 7 dis-

tinctions, 21 with 6 or more distinctions and 49 with 5 or more

distinctions.

The school also was able to achieve a 100% distinction rate

for Malay and 77% distinction rate for Biology. Even with that

said, our English distinction rate still remains below the national

level but will hopefully improve in the years to come.

about the struggles of fe-

males belonging to poor

families who were forced in-

to prostitution and the skit

really tugged at everybody’s

heartstrings.

The fifth play was Controlo-

gy by Yio Chu Kang Sec-

ondary School about teenage

angst and rebellion. Finally,

the last play of the night was

by Deyi Secondary School,

History, Whose History? The

play narrated Singapore’s

history in a comical way. Af-

ter watching these plays, we

realized that if these kids

around our age could con-

duct such fantastic plays,

then what’s stopping us?

On 13 January, all the

Secondary Threes went to

the Esplanade to watch a

play entitled Peer Pleasure.

It turned out to be six plays

rolled into one. At first,

when we entered the bone-

chilling recital hall where the

plays were taking place,

there was a collective giggle

as we all settled down in our

seats beside our friends.

Soon, the lights went out and

the first play started.

Although a bit confus-

ing at first, we came to real-

ise that it was a skit about

Little Red Riding Hood with

a modern twist. The second

play was by St. Joseph’s In-

stitution, called Lanterns

Never Go Out, mainly fol-

lowing the life of one boy

growing up. The third play

was called Boys by St. An-

drews Secondary School.

The Secondary Four students went to UK Farm Agro-Resort in Kluang,

Malaysia for their annual level camp this year. We got to experience the lives of

farmers as we took part in activities, such as cleaning the goats’ pen and fertilis-

ing the plants.

We also took part in mini games, like where we learnt how to work with

our classmates, and how to persevere in times of struggle, such as our prepara-

tion for the upcoming exams.

All of us also took part in the Sheep Challenge, a game where a group of

people have to chase a group of sheep, or goats, and catch them in order to win

a medal. We had a blast, and even our teachers participated, which was enter-

taining.

Another highlight of the camp was the campfire. It was fun to see all of

the classes performing and having the time of our lives.

It was truly the best experience we could have especially since most of us

will be graduating at the end of the year.

Camp Aspirations

On the 16 of January, the cast of The Lion Men came to our humble

school, much to the joy of the SJC-ians. Just a few months ago, the cast of Ah

Boys to Men had visited us. This time, the same cast came to SJC, advertising

their newest movie, The Lion Men. Amongst old faces such as Wang Weiliang,

Noah Yap and Charlie Goh, from the original Ah Boys to Men cast, there were

also new additions to the crew like Ngeow Zijie, Bec Bunz and Aden Tan.

Immediately after the third recess, we spent an enjoyable half an hour

which was filled with laughter and joy from both the cast and our own SJC-ians.

Thankfully, before the cast left school grounds, we managed to have a short in-

terview secession with the boys which is now available on YouTube.

A shocking ski incident that

turns out to be a miracle The long respected F1 Legend Michael Schumacher

has shocked many of his fans across the globe when he

carelessly crashed his head into a rock on December 29

2013. On the day of the crash he was rumoured to have suf-

fered from a brain injury that cannot be cured but rumours

soon cleared as his spokeswoman, Ms Kehm, claimed that it

is “ pure speculation” and insisted that the medics have the

fullest support from Mr Schumacher`s family.

Amazingly on 17 January, 19 days after the inci-

dent Mr Schumacher`s condition improved tremendous-

ly as doctors announced that his condition has stabilized.

This is supposedly the “first time” his condition has sta-

bilized without the word of “critical” following behind.

The beloved family of Mr Schumacher voiced out that

they have complete trust in the team of doctors treating

him and that his condition is believed to have stabilized.

kerana saya tidak mengenali ramai orang di sana. Perkhemahan itu berlangsung

selama tiga hari dua malam. Seseorang di dalam kumpulan saya tidak ada kad

ez-linknya dan kami mesti berjalan ke sana. Apabila kami tiba di sekolah, kami

merupakan kumpulan kedua dari kelas saya. Dari permainan-permainan itu, ka-

mi dapat merapatkan persahabatan dengan kawan-kawan yang baru.

Saya telah berpeluang menyertai perkhemahan Menengah Dua di Jalan

Bahtera Adventure Centre selama tiga hari dua malam. Semasa perkhemahan

itu, kami membuat aktiviti ‘Rock Climbing’, ‘Zipline’ dan ‘Absailing’. Saya

seronok melakukan semua aktiviti itu. Saya telah berjaya mengatasi kegerunan

saya! Aktiviti yang paling saya gemari ialah unggun api. Ini kerana kami dapat

membuat pelbagai sorakan dan juga merapatkan persahabatan saya dengan

rakan kelas baru saya.

Pengalaman Perkhemahan Menengah Dua

Pengalaman saya semasa melalui perkhemahan ini telah banyak

membimbing saya. Walaupun saya rasa tidak bersemangat sebelum melalui

perkhemahan tetapi saya mempelajari yang kita tidak patut berasa kurang berse-

mangat sebelum apa-apa terjadi. Oleh itu, saya tidak ingin kehilangan peluang

pengalaman berkhemah bersama rakan-rakan di sekolah.

Aktiviti-aktiviti yang dijalankan amat mencabar seperti aktiviti sukan di

tahap ketinggian yang tinggi. Dari aktiviti ini semua, saya diberi galakan dan

sokongan yang telah membuat saya lebih berani lalu saya mempelajari yang kita

harus sentiasa tolong-menolong dan memberi perhatian kepada rakan yang

melakukan aktiviti.

Salah satu aktiviti yang tidak dapat saya lupakan ialah sewaktu persemba-

han pada malam terakhir kerana kami mengeratkan lagi tali silaturahim dan

mempelajari bahawa kami harus menunjukkan inisiatif jika hendakkan

persembahan yang berjalan lancar dan menyeronokkan. Seandainya diberi

peluang lagi, saya akan melalui perkhemahan sekali lagi kerana saya dapat

mempelajari banyak nilai-nilai yang bermanfaat dan dapat lebih bersyukur

dengan keadaan yang lebih selesa di rumah seperti alat penghawa dingin.

Pengalaman Melalui Perkhemahan 2014

Semasa perkhemahan 3 hari 2 malam ini, saya mempelajari banyak perkara

yang sangat penting. Walaupun perjalanannya tidak selalu manis, kenangan-kenangan

yang pahit itu mustahak dalam setiap individu. Tugas saya sebagai fasillitator kelas

ialah untuk membimbing pelajar-pelajar Menengah satu yang baru masuk ke sekolah

ini. Walaupun saya berasa gementar pada mulanya, apabila saya berinteraksi dan ber-

bual bersama pelajar-pelajar, rasa takut itu hilang dengan perlahan-lahan.

Pengajaran yang paling saya ingat ialah pengaruh yang kita ada kepada seorang

itu begitu kuat. Kerana saya sentiasa bersama pelajar-pelajar itu, saya harus tetap

berkelakuan baik supaya saya boleh menjadi seorang contoh yang baik buat mereka.

Selain itu, saya juga mempelajari betapa pentingnya kerjasama antara kumpulan itu.

Jika seorang itu tidak bekerjasama, tentu perkhemahan ini tidak akan berjaya.

Ya, perkhemahan ini memang susah dan memenatkan diri, tetapi saya tentu ma-

hu melalui perkhemahan ini sekali lagi.

Pengalaman saya semasa perkhemahan 2014

Saya telah berpeluang untuk menyertai perkhemahan Menengah Empat di

Kluang pada 6 hingga 8 Januari yang lalu. Pada mulanya, saya tidak pasti jikalau

saya hendak menyertai perkhemahan ini kerana saya mendapat tahu bahawa saya dan

rakan-rakan harus tidur berdekatan dengan kebun. Selama tiga hari dua malam,

perasaan saya terhadap perkhemahan itu berubah. Saya semakin menyukai tempat

dan pemandangan di situ. Aktiviti-aktiviti yang telah saya dan rakan sekelas sertai

ialah permainan menangkap kambing.

Kami juga telah melakukan kerja kemasyarakatan di rumah orang kurang

upaya. Selama tiga hari dua malam, saya telah mempelajari bagaimana kita harus

bersyukur dengan apa yang Tuhan telah berikan kepada kami. Saya juga berpeluang

untuk mengeratkan persahabatan dengan rakan sekelas saya.

Pengalaman dan memori di Kluang tidak akan saya lupakan. Inilah perkhema-

han yang paling seronok bagi saya.

Seandainya saya diberi peluang untuk melalui perkhemahan ini sekali lagi, saya

pasti setuju kerana setiap perkhemahan yang saya sertai saya pasti mempelajari

sesuatu yang baru.

Kem Metamorphosis 2014

Kem pada tahun 2014 dinamakan Kem Metamorphosis. ‘Metamorphosis’

bermaksud bertukar untuk menjadi seorang yang lebih matang dan menghargai

seni. Ia adalah perkhemahan harian. Saya amat suka idea ini kerana kami boleh

pulang ke rumah dan tidak perlu berebut antara satu sama lain untuk menunggu

giliran kami untuk mandi. Tambahan pula, kami boleh tidur di atas katil kami

yang empuk dan selesa.

Pada hari pertama, kami menuju ke Muzium Sejarah Singapura. Di sana,

kami dapat mengetahui sejarah Singapura. Ia seperti belajar tentang sejarah teta-

pi lebih seronok kerana kami boleh mendengar kepada audio dan melihat artifak

-artifak yang sebenarnya!

Pada hari seterusnya, kami menghadiri bengkel etika. Kami mendengar ju-

rulatih profesional memberi kami nasihat dan tunjuk ajar bagaimana kita harus

berkelakuan dan berpakaian sesuai untuk majlis tertentu. Kami berasa seronok

kerana kami dapat mengetahui dengan lebih lanjut tentang diri kami sendiri sep-

erti bentuk muka dan badan kami. Seterusnya, jurulatih tersebut mengajar kami

bagaimana untuk bersolek, berjalan dan berpakaian yang sesuai untuk pelbagai

situasi.

Akhirnya, pada hari ketiga, kami menuju ke Muzium Seni Singapura. Ter-

dapat banyak lukisan dan galeri yang terdapat di sana. Ia semua amat men-

gagumkan kerana galeri itu memaparkan kerja-kerja yang menakjubkan dan

mempunyai banyak simbolisme daripada pelukis-pelukis di negara ASEAN. Te-

ma untuk muzium ini adalah ‘Singapore: Biennale 2013: If The World

Changed’. Setelah melalui galeri-galeri ini, ia telah membuka mata saya tentang

apa yang berlaku di dunia sekarang.

Pada mulanya, saya berasa teragak-agak untuk menghadiri perkhemahan

ini kerana saya tidak rapat dengan rakan kelas saya yang baru. Tetapi, saya me-

maksa diri sendiri dan saya suka dengan perkhemahan ini. Jika diberikan pelu-

ang, saya akan melalui perkhemahan ini sekali lagi. Pengalaman di muzium dan

memerhatikan dan memahami makna di sebalik lukisan itu memang memuas-

kan diri saya.

Perkhemahan Menengah Empat

Sepanjang perkhemahan tersebut, kami diperlukan untuk melakukan beberapa

aktiviti dan mengatasi banyak cabaran sebagai sekelas. Ini termasuk pertand-

ingan permainan pada malam pertama di mana kami sekelas harus cuba me-

nyelesaikan seberapa banyak permainan dalam masa kurang setengah jam.

Akhirnya, kelas saya telah menang dan kami berasa amat bangga.

Untuk hari kedua, kami telah melawat rumah kanak-kanak yang kurang

upaya dan diberi peluang untuk berinteraksi dengan mereka dan pada masa

yang sama, bersyukur dengan segala yang telah diberikan kepada kami.

Selepas itu, kami ditugaskan untuk cuba menangkap kambing. Walaupun

kami gagal, pengalaman itu telah mengajar kami kepentingan untuk merancang

dan berkomunikasi. Untuk malam yang terakhir, kami sekelas telah mem-

persembahkan nyanyian kami dan perasaannya sangat menyeronokkan.

Sebelum perkhemahan tersebut, saya berasa takut kerana tidak pasti ten-

tang bagaimana keadaan tempat itu dan jika saya kuat untuk menghadapi caba-

ran. Selepas perkhemahan, saya berasa amat gembira kerana dapat merapatkan

diri dengan rakan sedarjah saya dan juga kerana telah berjaya untuk mengatasi

kebimbangan dan ketakutan saya.

Saya telah belajar untuk lebih berdikari dan bersyukur dengan kehidupan

saya. Selain itu, saya juga dapat melihat segala aspek kehidupan yang luar bi-

asa dan lain daripada di Singapura.

Kalau diberi peluang, tentu saya akan melalui perkhemahan ini sekali lagi.

Perkhemahan itu adalah perkhemahan yang terbaik sepanjang empat tahun saya

berada di sekolah ini. Kami berseronok dan pada masa yang sama, belajar ban-

yak benda. Ini merupakan satu pengalaman yang sangat bermakna dan saya

hendak melaluinya sekali lagi.
