SEB’S PROJECTS FIRST QUARTER REPORT-2019

Enrollment campaign

A Rally was organized in all the villages to identify school drop-

outs and never enrolled children to enroll in the nearest Seb’s

schools for the academic year 2019-20. The rally emphasized

the importance of right to compulsory education. Children held

placards and voiced slogans while walking through the villages.

The village head man flagged off the rally in each village. This

year Seb’s school has a total strength of 330 students.

First term

June to September month is the first term for the academic

year. Organizing school uniforms, note books, text books and

noon meals with the government was the major task in this

term. The government support was truly appreciative in provid-

ing all the necessary supplies for all our schools. The block lev-

el officers and Chief education officers from the District educa-

tion department visited our school for supervision and gave a

good report. The First term exam was conducted in all the

schools and the school was closed for term holidays from 30th

September to 9th October “.

Teachers and coordinators also visited the previous year main-

streamed students to motivate them and to ensure that they

continue their middle schooling. While visiting we felt happy

that our children are doing extremely well. They look confident

in their look and behaviour and proud of themselves. (Taking

Child labour eradication awareness program

As part of the community education program, our school teachers or-

ganized awareness program on child labour. Though migration with

children for work has reduced to a great extent, we felt it is very im-

portant to keep on insisting, so that it does not revert as it affects the

children’s education. The program exposed the ill effects of child la-

bour. Community people also participated in the program .

Independence Day celebration We consider celebration of national days very important in school as

people in tribal areas have no exposure and chance to know or par-

ticipate in such celebrations .We celebrated Independence Day in our

schools by hoisting the national flag. This year also we celebrated

with all the community people coming together. Teachers gave a

speech about the nation and the freedom fighters.

Art sessions Charlotte Aiken volunteered for one month to teach art in Seb’s schools. The sessions was filled

with fun and colors. Using paints as a medium she introduced children to different forms of art. She

also conducted a workshop for Seb’s teachers. Charlotte visited Arni School as well as Pri-

yadharshini special school and taught art and crafts. Her time with the children was very valuable

and special.

Clowns visit

The Humanitarian Clowns headed by Tim visited our Periyapanaparai School and did clowning

with our school children. The whole of Periyapanaparai village was filled with laughter. The clowns

made the school students go crazy with their funky makeups and fun

activities. Students enjoyed the clowning day to

the fullest.

Tyler’s library

Slade and her Son Hudson are the regular clowns visiting us for the past five years. Slade im-

pressed by our school project offered support to the school library. This year she stacked the Ty-

ler’s library with more English books. She also gifted book marks, stickers and Library bags. She

also expressed her willingness to start a similar Tyler’s library in other Seb’s schools.

Maruthavalimedu School: Maruthavalimedu school construc-

tion is still in the process. As we all know the community came

forward to bake more than 2000 bricks for construction, now that

we are in the process of laying the foundation. It is huge chal-

lenge for us to transport the construction materials to the hills and

so the construction process is slowing down. We hope that the

work will finish as soon as possible. Thanks to the community

people who have offered support to build the school.

Medical check-up: General medical check-up

was organized for this quarter in Seb’s school. Mo-

bile medical unit from CMC visited the village and

did checkups for all our children. Individual health

record note for all the children in maintained in the

schools. There was no major illness identified ex-

pect simple cough and cold.

Blood group identification: As per the Government norms recording the blood group of the

school students is mandatory. Our team organized with the Government Primary Health center to

identify the blood group of all the school students. All the students in Seb’s school with the help of

the ccommunity were brought to Peenjamandhai health center to give blood samples. It was a

one day mass event organized in partnership with the Government health services. We are very

happy for the fact that though our school are in remote places, we were able to bring people in

line in all possible ways to access the welfare schemes and other benefits.

Fun activities with volunteers: We often have

young volunteers from Vellore itself, who are inter-

ested to visit our schools in the hills. Bringing these

people to the hills to do fun games and activities

make our children happy and enthusiastic. We be-

lieve that giving an exposure to meet different people

will help our children to develop communication skills

and keep motivated. We thank the VIT Professor Mr.

Sebastian, and VIT students Adithitya and Shrey-

ansh and Giridharan and Naveen for their constant

visits and activities .

Bag stitching: Thangama from Thandayanko-tai village is one enthusiastic women who con-tinues to inspire us in all ways .She is a very resourceful member of the self-help group. Thangama stitched the customized bags for the clowns. Spinning and soap making still continues to en-

sure income for the women group.

SAMUNDI -A PROUD HEALTH PROFESSIONAL Samundi our scholarship student from Thandayankotai village success-fully completed her four year B.Sc Nursing course in September 2019. Her four years of learning, the challenges she faced, hard work and ef-forts has transformed her into a confident, accomplished young woman looking forward to a bright future as a health professional. She had passed all her exam with good scores. She attended several

campus interviews and was selected by The SRM Multi speciality Hos-

pital which is one of the biggest private hospitals in the state capital.

She is offered a salary of Rs. 15000 per month and accommodation.

Her future aim is to qualify though the Medical Recruitment Board to se-

cure a job in the government run hospitals. She hopes that would get

her a job closer to home.
