Great River Educational Arts Theatre (GREAT) creates meaningful experiences for artists and audiences of all ages.

Through dynamic on-stage programming and innovative off-stage educational outreach, we are creating a culturally vibrant community of tomorrow by educating and entertaining audiences today.

When the one and only country legend Dolly Parton writes a musical, you know it’s going to be hilarious. Welcome to 9 to 5 The Musical!

Last season we opened with the thrillingly dramatic Les Miserables and this year we’re kicking up our heels with this musical comedy that’s fresh from Broadway. As you’ll see, the GREAT Theatre Company

strives to offer the very best in teen and adult theater at affordable prices. And we always feature local talent and a professional artistic staff.

I hope you enjoy the show and if you do, make sure you tell your boss. -Dennis Whipple

plot summaryAs the clocks ring and the workers wake up it is 1979. Violet, Doralee, Judy and ensemble prepare for another mundane and hellish day at work under Franklin Hart, Jr., president of Consolidated Industries. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call the boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy - giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Have the tables finally been turned on their sexist boss?

on stage & in our community

At GREAT Theatre, we honor the imagination and creativity of children and adults. We are a community theatre created by and for our local community. We do this through:

Live Performances: This year, GREAT is producing eight shows with more than 70 performances. We reach over 56,000 people every year. Our student matinees turn the stage into a classroom for 18,000 students with educational guides designed to integrate the arts into the classroom.

Education: We build “life skills through stage skills” for thousands of local youth each year. Over 1,500 students participated in our summer camps last year while we also brought theatre to our community through free public performances in the park, theatre residencies and other collaborations.

In spring 2013, GREAT helped produce a Spanish version of Our Lady Guadalupe in partnership with Centro Hispano Church (Waite Park, MN).

workplace whoas! Some Things Change... We thought it’d be fun to compare the cost of a few common workplace supplies in 1979 versus 2014. But then we realized that most of what was used then doesn’t exist in most offices today (typewriter, rolodex, ashtrays)! So we picked a few other common commodities:

Some Things Remain the Same... Answer a few of these thought provoking questions, then compare notes with your neighbor. -What has been your favorite job? -What is one cringe-worthy phrase that a boss said to you? -Ever had blackmail on a coworker but didn’t use it? -What’s one thing that a coworker did that drove you absolutely crazy?
