Rabbi Daniel Sherman LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD

As I write this, my final column for our newsletter, I find myself doing a lot of looking back and looking forward. Looking back – but not too far – we had a very busy month of May. I enjoyed our month of special days, about which I wrote last month. I want to wish a special Mazal Tov to all of our May B’nai Mitzvah, to our graduates, and especially to the Confirmation Class of 5779 and their families.

Looking forward – but not too far – I am excited about our First Friday Family Shabbat on Friday, June 7. We will celebrate anniversaries and birthdays, and we will begin to share some farewells. I hope you will be able to join us. And on Sunday morning, June 9, I am looking forward to the Festival of Shavuot, one of our most important holidays of the year. We will hold a special Festival Morning Service at 10:00 am, as we celebrate the Festival of Weeks and the Season of Revelation. For our Torah Study, we will take a closer look at the Ten Commandments, as Shavuot marks the anniversary of our receiving God’s laws at Mount Sinai.

As I look back over the past 4 years, I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together. Temple Dor Dorim is a special place and a special congregation. I have been honored to serve as your rabbi and to follow in the footsteps of Rabbi Norman Lipson. We are an active congregation with something for everyone. TDD is home to the best ECC in Weston and a thriving Religious School and Youth Department. We hold meaningful and joyful worship services and holiday celebrations. We come together to celebrate significant life-cycle moments and to support each other in times of sorrow. We host interesting discussions, lectures, and adult education classes. We offer both social and social action opportunities. We support our brothers and sisters in the land of Israel, and we have the most outstanding group of Empty Nesters. I have enjoyed being a part of all of the above. We can take pride in the way we have striven to fulfill our obligation to be a BEIT TEFILAH – a House of Prayer, a BEIT MIDRASH – a House of Study, and a BEIT K’NESSET – a House of Assembly. Something for everyone throughout the generations – that is who we are, and who we will continue to be as we enter into this next chapter of our story.

I want to thank you, my TDD family, friends, congregation, and community for your support, your continued involvement, your patience and participation, your warmth and your friendship. Please know how much that means to me and to Morgan, Shai, and Janna. We feel fortunate to have been able to have been a part of this.

There are so many thanks that I would like to offer, and there is simply not enough space here to accomplish this. But there are a few people in particular to whom I would like to express my gratitude.

What a blessing it has been to have Cantor Carrie Barry as a part of TDD this past year. I think she has been a wonderful addition to our congregation. I have greatly enjoyed working with her, worshipping with her, and learning from her. I want to wish her all the best as she journeys north to Jacksonville this month to continue her career. Yishar Koach and Behatzlacha!

I want to thank Rabbi Lipson for all of his advice, his humor, his leadership, his friendship, and his continued commitment to the congregation he founded. Thank you for being a mentor – I will miss our conversations and lunches. I also want to thank my partner Allison Teisch, our Cantorial Soloist Emerita, for all that she has done for our congregation and for working with me for my first 3 years here.

Of course, I want to thank Faye Kotler for all of her hard work, her dedication, and her patience. On behalf of myself and Cantor Barry and Rabbi Lipson, we couldn’t do what we do without you. Thank you for all that you do – for me and for all of us here at TDD.

I want to thank all of our wonderful educators. I so enjoy being part of our ECC and watching our kids begin their journeys right here. Mazal Tov to this year’s Pre-K graduation class: please know that you are a special group to me. I am a huge fan of Ms. Sheila’s, and I want to thank Sheila and Amy and all of our teachers and staff for the love and dedication they bring to Temple each and every day. I will greatly miss working, talking, and meeting every day with Jamie Mafdali, our talented YELP Director. You have been a wonderful partner and you do so much – I have enjoyed watching you grow and adapt as you have evolved into your new position. I have great faith in you – we are lucky to have you.

I want to thank Bonnie Rayman, with whom I have enjoyed working these past three years. You bring a lot to our congregation and staff. I want to thank all of the people whom I see and work with every day: Rachel, Fran, Lori, Oscar, and Jennifer. You are such an important part of my TDD family. Please know that I will miss you all. ~ Continued on page 4 ~

Dear Fellow Congregants: I am writing this article as I prepare for our annual meeting. While summer is typically a quieter time for many, at Temple Dor Dorim we are turning our focus to the 2019-2020 year. Just last month, our current Board of Trustees completed its first board workshop facilitated by the Union for Reform Judaism. Although we are all anticipating a lot of changes in the year ahead, the Board of Trustees and I are confident that we are on the path to success. As everyone is aware, the rabbi search process is still underway, headed by Neal Topf, our Executive Vice President, and Peter Shapiro, our Vice President. Rest assured there will be a rabbi on the Bimah this upcoming year for High Holidays, life cycle events and everything else in between and we will continue to provide updates as they become available. While we don’t yet know who our next rabbi will be, I want to take this time to thank Rabbi Sherman for his hard work and dedication over the last four years and wish him well as the new Senior Rabbi at Temple Sinai in New Orleans. Although Cantor Barry has only been with us for the past year, she has been a positive influence at Temple Dor Dorim with her inspiration, beautiful music and voice, which we quickly became accustomed to. Please also join me in wishing Cantor Barry much success at Congregation Ahavath Chesed in Jacksonville. There will be a special farewell Shabbat on June 7, 2019 so we can all personally say goodbye to both Rabbi Sherman and Cantor Barry. If I don’t see you at the annual meeting, have a safe and enjoyable summer. I look forward to seeing everyone at Welcome Weekend (mark your calendars now for Friday, August 23 through Sunday, August 25). [email protected]

Adam Silverman,

President

Rabbi Daniel Sherman ~ Continued from page 3 ~

I also want to thank all of our lay leaders. Temple Dor Dorim is blessed to have such committed leaders who are working hard on behalf of the entire congregation and community. I know that it is an act of love and service. Thank you to all of our current and past board members and officers. I especially want to thank our two presidents with whom I have been fortunate enough to work and to call friends: Hal Mindel and Adam Silverman. Thank you for your support, your partnership, and your dedication to our Temple.

This month we begin by concluding the book of Leviticus and transitioning to the book of Numbers, which contains the stories of our people as we continue our journey to the Promised Land. I am excited to begin the next chapter of my rabbinate at Temple Sinai of New Orleans this summer. It is not easy to say good-bye to Temple Dor Dorim. But I know that TDD is in good and caring hands, guided by strong leaders, who will continue to shepherd our congregation on this most important Jewish journey into the future.

Todah Rabbah – thank you so very much. Shalom u’vracha – I wish you peace and blessing. Lehitraot!

Bonnie Rayman,

Executive Director As the school year winds down and we head into summer, it makes me think about transitions in our lives.

Transitions are all about change and how we handle them. I remember back to my teaching days and how I

always had to plan out the transitions for my students. Just going from the classroom to the gymnasium or

to the playground was a tough time for some children. I made sure we had a song or a game planned that

got us from point A to point B successfully.

My son is now entering his senior year. My summer will be filled with college applications and essays. But

really it will be filled with days of cherishing every moment we have together as a family of four, because the

days of only being 3 under one roof are a blink away. My job as a mother is to make sure that his transition

from high school to college is successful. I think I have been preparing for this transition for a lifetime…but

let’s see how I hold it together this year.

My Facebook feed is filled with pictures of graduations. I know I am just one year away from my son’s

high school graduation, but I can still vividly remember his Pre-K graduation with the famous theme of

Dr. Seuss’s Oh, The Places You’ll Go. Every day this week I listen to our very own TDD Pre-K students

practice their songs for their graduation on Tuesday, June 4 (my office backs up to a Pre-K class, so I have

that joy of hearing these young voices sing). Moving up from Pre-K to Kindergarten is an important

transition. We wish a big Mazel Tov to all of our families of Pre-K students and thank you for allowing us

the honor of teaching your children and getting them ready for school. We hope their transition to

Kindergarten is smooth and successful!

Our Temple is also currently in a time of transition as we say farewell to Rabbi Sherman and Cantor Barry.

On behalf of the Temple Dor Dorim staff, we want to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for their

leadership, guidance and inspiration. We will miss you! We look forward to a bright future with new clergy

leading Temple Dor Dorim.

In the meantime, I see the strength of our community through its lay leadership, membership and staff. I

am proud to call Temple Dor Dorim my Temple family. I am confident our new clergy will feel welcome and

at home here.

I wish all of you a happy summer, filled with family, friends, fun and great memories! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or comments.

Cantor Carrie Barry Life is all about beginnings and endings. Our big lifecycle events revolve around beginnings: birth, the beginning of life; bar mitzvah, the beginning of adulthood; and marriage, two individuals starting their new journey together. Most of us celebrate both Rosh HaShanah, to mark the Jewish New Year, and the secular New Year on January 1. We gear up for “Back to School” with fresh backpacks, binders and lunchboxes. We dance joyously on Simchat Torah as we complete the reading of the Torah and immediately begin again at B’reishit. Most other endings are acknowledged as well, through graduations, award ceremonies, divorce, retirement, and eventually, funerals. However, there is a reason why a graduation is also called “commencement.” Endings are inherently new beginnings, for the end of one chapter of life means the beginning of a new one. These are times of transition and growth and can be full of potential. As my time at Temple Dor Dorim comes to a close, I want to tell you how this chapter of my own personal and professional journey has been just as significant as all of the others. While I was only with you for a short time, your kindness and your willingness to accept me and my family with open arms was exactly what I needed at exactly the right time. I have adored working with the staff, lay leadership, students and membership of TDD and look forward to hearing about your many successes. To the Generations Choir, I will never forget your warmth and support. Any cantor would be blessed to have you! Thank you to our Directors, our office staff, our teachers, our custodial staff, and the crew at Palm Caterers. It has been a pleasure working with you. A very special thank you to Rabbi Sherman, Jamie Mafdali and Faye Kotler. What a team! I’ve loved working with you, laughing with you, and helping you make wonderful things happen here at Temple. This July, I will be starting at my new position as Cantor of Congregation Ahavath Chesed in Jacksonville, FL. Founded in 1882, The Temple (as it’s called) has a long history of being a center for Jewish life in northern Florida. If you happen to be passing through on your way up north or heading to Saint Augustine for a vacation, please think about coming to visit, especially for a Shabbat evening! When we complete a book of the Torah, we recite the words, “Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek!” Be strong, be strong, and let us strengthen each other. While our time together has come to an end, the relationships we established over the past year have inspired me, renewed my soul, and been a part of my own transformation. I hope that I have made an impact in your world as well and that we have, in fact, strengthened each other.

Jewish Superstitions? Poo, Poo, Poo! With Rabbi Lipson on

Wednesday, June 5, 12, 19, & 26, 2019 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm “One shouldn’t believe in superstitions, but still, it’s best to be careful of them.”

~ Sefer Chassidim/ The Book of the Righteous - Germany (13th Century)

Judaism has never given any credence to superstitions, however, many of its followers have not been as adamant. In this four week course, we will learn about (and share) many

famous, popular, as well as not so well-known folk beliefs of our People and learn more about Jewish traditions than we think we already know.*

*I do not guarantee the efficacy of any of the superstitions or practices that will be studied in class.

Director of Youth Engagement:

Learning & Programs

There are many people that I’d like to thank in this article. I want you all to know that while I don’t thank everyone in print or from a podium each day, I do thank God regularly for having you as part of our Religious School and Temple family.

First of all, we all need to thank Lori, our Religious School Administrator. Lori is behind the scenes in everything and I’d be lost without her. From teaching Hebrew to individuals and small groups to making sure we have all the materials we need, and so much more, Lori, thank you for all that you do. We all appreciate it.

The scholar and philosopher Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel said, “What we need more than anything else is not text-books but text-people. It is the personality of the teacher which is the text that the pupils read; the text that they will never forget.” We here at Temple Dor Dorim are lucky that our teachers bring their full selves to our students. Our students learn from them as role models and for that we are grateful.

Our Religious School Assistants volunteer their time on Sundays or Wednesdays, and a few on Sundays and Wednesdays! Having them in our classrooms is so important. Not only do they relate so beautifully to our students but they also show the students what being part of a synagogue community is by showing them how important TDD is to them. On behalf of our teachers and students, we thank you.

A special thank you to Rose and Brendon for greeting our students and families at the front desk and for all that they have done to help our Religious School run smoothly.

Our partners in this process are, of course, our parents and families. Your dedication to our Religious School teachers, programs, fundraisers, holidays and more is felt throughout the year. So much of what we are able to do is because of the hard work of our Class Parents. Thank you for supporting our teachers in the ways that they’ve asked, each one differently. I also want to thank our PTO President, Joanne Chiet, for giving so much of her time and energy to Temple Dor Dorim.

Cantor Barry brought a renewed energy to our Tefilah. Her time with our students, our 6th and 7th Graders in particular, gave an added depth to our program. Thank you, Cantor, for working with each class to prepare for our grade level Shabbatot with patience and passion. While we only had your teaching and music for one year, we know it will stay with us so much longer than that. Our teachers, students, and families offer you our gratitude and wish you and your family all the best in your move to Jacksonville.

Rabbi Sherman’s smile and kind words of welcome to each of our students is great to watch. He made sure to have a presence in our classrooms and hallways because it was important and meaningful not just to the students but to him, too. Rabbi Sherman, we have learned so much from your words as well as your actions. I know I speak for our families, students, and teachers when I say thank you. We hope New Orleans treats you and your family well.

Saving the best for last, I want to thank our students. From our Kindergarten class all the way up to our 12th Grade T.A.G. participants, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for putting in the effort. Thank you for learning and thank you for asking questions. You are so important, and I’m glad you’re here!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at [email protected].

Ritual When you think of Shavuot, what are the first things that come to mind? The most common answers are: the giving of the Ten Commandments (Torah) at Sinai, Confirmation services, and the eating of dairy foods. You may be quite surprised to learn that none of those are included in the Biblical references to Shavuot. Shavuot is referred to as “Chag HaShavuot” (Festival of Weeks), “Chag HaKatzir,” (Festival of the Harvest), and “Yom HaBikkurim” (Day of First Fruits). Originally an agricultural festival, Shavuot, along with Passover and Sukkot, formed the “Shalosh Regalim” (three pilgrimage festivals). During these festivals, Israelites were commanded to travel to Jerusalem in order to bring the first fruits of the harvest to the Temple and present them to the priests. “Festival of Weeks” refers to the seven week period between Passover and Shavuot, considered to be the length of the wheat harvest. The destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. presented a challenge to the observance of Shavuot. Since pilgrimages and sacrifices were no longer possible, it became necessary to create new customs and rituals that could be observed while in exile. The rabbis noticed that the time frame for the journey from Egypt to the foot of Mount Sinai was approximately the same as the time between Passover and Shavuot, and that the date commanded for Shavuot seemed to correspond to the day Torah was given to Moses and the people. They added another name for Shavuot, calling it “Z’man Matan Torateinu” (The Time of the Giving of our Torah). The agricultural roots of Shavuot are still acknowledged, but modern interpretations and customs focus more on Shavuot as the commemoration of the giving of Torah. Confirmation ceremonies are often held on Shavuot since they represent the students’ reaffirmation to Judaism and the Jewish People. Dairy foods (especially cheesecake and blintzes) are traditionally eaten on Shavuot because the words of Torah are often compared to “milk and honey.” Two contemporary songs that illustrate these themes of Shavuot are “The 613 Commandments” by Debbie Friedman (z”l) and “Sweet as Honey” by Dan Nichols and Eighteen. Please join us on Sunday, June 9 at 10 am for our Shavuot Festival Service! Abbey Shepard-Smith Ritual Committee Chair [email protected]

Empty Nesters The month of June will signal the end of our Empty Nesters’ 22nd fiscal year and we can, once again, be proud of our accomplishments, as a vibrant and exciting Temple Auxiliary! We sponsored an Empty Nesters event in each month, September to May, with two in January. Additionally, we co-sponsored the Family Fun Day in the Park on December 25, had a successful collection for the Broward Homeless on Mitzvah Day, and were Gold Sponsors and participated with three tables at the Gala. Also, we sponsored the opening meeting of the Schmooze 2.0, a renewed and important Temple Social Auxiliary, with a mission to energize our 30 to 60 year old members with interesting interactive activities. Our varied programming of Religious, Social, Educational and Cultural events underscores our stated mission of “cultivating and nurturing friendships, while enhancing meaningful Jewish experiences and supporting our Temple.” Although not primarily a fund-raising Temple Auxiliary, this year we financially donated to various efforts within the Temple in excess of $4000, which included the Tu BiShevat Seder, Holiday Picnic, Temple Gala, Youth Department programming and our year-end endowment to the Temple operating budget. Additionally, the “Alice and Gary Holtzman Empty Nesters Tzedakah Fund” was a sponsor of the Welcome Weekend, Anniversary Gala and the Empty Nesters Shabbat honoring Elaine Jacobson and also contributed funds to CHAI, TOUCHY and Camp Jenny, totaling another $1300. Donations to this Tzedakah fund are always welcome for Mitzvah and Life Cycle events. We sincerely thank our 2018/19 Tzedakah Fund Donor Families: Meryl & Bob Baker Hansi & Gary Brown Joanne & Larry Chiet Crystal Cooper Lorelei & Bob Ennis Fracnine & Bruce Flamm Sue & Phil Gardner Shelley & Peter Gray Alice & Gary Holtzman Elaine & Herb Jacobson Amy & Marty Kotlar Roberta & Marshall Krolick Margit Mandel Carol & Joe Pomerantz Bonnie & Evan Rayman Lenore Rosa Lydia & Bill Rosenberg Shelli & Stephen Schwartz Diane & Steve Shankman Jeri Sorosky Linda & Art Tenenbaum Arlene & Ron Trust Susan & Michel Victor Fran Weber Our successes can only be achieved with a team effort and the Empty Nesters are blessed with a wonderful group who participated on this year’s Executive Committee with leadership in administration, and chairing and/or co-chairing events. We thank these dedicated individuals for their efforts: Officers: Elaine Jacobson, Lenore Rosa, Arthur Tenenbaum, Steve Schwartz and Andi Gero, and Committee Members: Alice Holtzman, Roberta Krolick, Margit Mandel, Sylvia Saks and Ron Trust. This year’s newcomers, Steve Schwartz and Ron Trust, stepped forward, but we need new volunteers, with new ideas, as we look to promote for future growth. We also extend our thanks and appreciation to our exceptional Temple staff: Bonnie Rayman, Fran Weber, Rachel Kaplan, Sheila Woldenberg, Amy Lyons, Jamie Mafdali, Lori Blum, Ethel Slowik, Ellen Shilling and, our newest addition, Jennifer Klein. Special kudos and gratitude to Faye Kotler for all she does throughout the year for the Empty Nesters. Additionally, thank you Rabbi Sherman, Rabbi Lipson, Cantor Barry and Scott Kushner for all of your professional guidance and support. We could not have accomplished our successes without everyone working together as a caring, involved Temple team. And finally, thank you to our Empty Nesters Family, 95 members strong, who participated in our events, as well as, supporting our Temple. We averaged over fifty percent of our members attending each of the events. We are now planning next year’s program of events and encourage you to renew your Empty Nesters’ memberships now! The $25 per person dues remain the same and, as mentioned above, are used in support of Temple activities. Speaking of supporting the Temple, now is the time to also renew your Temple membership. I would encourage everyone to consider the Temple’s “Enhanced Membership Program,” which is essential to ensure that those who are unable to pay the full amount for membership and/or Religious School, are able to receive financial assistance. As chairman of the Financial Arrangements committee, I sincerely thank those who give through this program. Alice joins me in wishing everyone a joyful and safe summer, filled with pleasurable travel and stimulating activities. We look forward to seeing you back for a new year of Temple and Empty Nesters excitement.

Shalom, Gary Holtzman [email protected]

JUNE EMPTY NESTERS “SENIOR SPOTLIGHT”

This month our Spotlight shines on Alice Ann Holtzman who, along with her two sisters, was born in the Bronx and raised in the Throggs Neck area. While attending both Christopher Columbus H.S. and City College of New York, sometimes after classes and mostly on weekends, Alice worked in the family business, “Lang’s Auto Repair.” There, as a “grease monkey,” she removed and replaced engine parts, rebuilt carborators, fixed flat tires, changed oil, etc. In 1955, as a CCNY freshman, at a school social, she met her future spouse, Gary. The relationship soon became pretty serious and in 1958, at the end of her junior year, they were married. After a weekend honeymoon in the Catskill’s Neville Hotel, Gary shipped off to fulfill his Army obligation. Alice completed her senior year and graduated in 1959 with a BBA and went to work in New York’s garment district serving as an of-fice manager and model. In 1960, ‘62 and ‘66 she birthed her family with Bruce, Sheri and Michele, respectively. Today, the Holtzman family has grown to 15, when adding spouses and 7 grandchildren, with serious potential for further growth. In 1967, Gary was transferred to Florida and the family moved to North Miami Beach. Ten years later, Alice began her 25 year career as an Early Childhood Educator at the Michael Ann Russell JCC, as an assistant teacher and rose to Director of the school by the time she left in 1993. That is when the family moved to Weston and Alice continued to teach 3 year olds at Temples Kol Ami, B’nai Aviv and finally Beth Emet, from which she retired in 2002. She is remembered as a skilled classroom innovator and was recognized by CAJE with an Outstanding Educational Leadership Award. Miss Alice was missed after retirement, but no more than she missed the children! Alice and Gary joined the storefront TDD in the Fall of 1997 and, soon after, Alice became an ac-tive volunteer and has not stopped since. She is pure gold, #notwithstanding, that I am prejudiced.
