Education Is the Heart of SDPB“Hello Children. This is Allis…”

“I’m Diana Tollefson. Why don’t you Draw With Me!”

“Welcome to Candy Cane Lane!”

“Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?”

The listeners and viewers of South Dakota Public Broadcasting rely on SDPB for educational programming. Many grew up with us.

Formal educational programming began in 1932, when KUSD-AM radio first broadcast the “South Dakota School of the Air” in conjunction with the Extension Service and the University of South Dakota. The first series of programs was a nine-part lecture titled “The English Letters of Voltaire.”

As the educational service expanded on the radio, schools began using the service in the classroom. This allowed small schools located remotely to offer music classes, more advanced math and literature courses and other subjects they could not offer because of limited resources.

By the 1950s, Allis Rice and Ruth Adkins were writing and producing award-winning classroom lessons under the guidance of the South Dakota Department of Education and a board of directors made up of area educators. These programs were aired not only on KUSD-AM, but also on a network of commercial stations across the state that donated airtime to the project.

Public television came along in the 1960s and enhanced the classroom opportunities available. The growth of the SDPB Television network to a statewide system allowed teachers the opportunity to place TV sets in the classroom where lessons could be offered. Later, educational programming was offered overnight and teachers would request shows from a vast library of topics and subjects.

Just as the Philco radio or Motorola TV was a fixture in the classrooms of the past, the computer is a fixture today. And SDPB has adapted to that technology to give educators access to content online, including lessons, lesson plans and teacher’s guides. Teachers have the opportunity to enhance their classroom presentations and students of all ages have the option of learning at a pace that’s comfortable.

SDPB educates and informs throughout the day on TV, Radio and Online. Your support through the years has made it possible. Thank you!

SDPB Features Educational Resources at ConferenceSDPB is a great resource for educators in

science and math, and those resources will be a highlight of SDPB’s presentations at the science and math conference for the SDSTA and SDCTM (South Dakota Science Teachers Association and South Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics) on Feb. 2-4.

SDPB’s Science Guy Steven Rokusek will amaze teachers with hands-on science demonstrations they can repeat in their classrooms during a presentation at 8:30am on Saturday, Feb. 4. In addition, he will present sessions at 9:30am and 2:30pm on Friday, Feb. 3, on the PBS LearningMedia and SDPB Digital Learning Library that have hundreds of topics, and thousands of classroom-ready digital resources, including video, activities,

lesson plans and teacher’s guides at SDPB.org/edu. Information on science demos and the digital resources are free for teachers, home-schoolers and lifelong SDPB Science Guy Steven Rokusek.

learners at sdpb.org/edu.If you’re at the conference, make sure to

attend one of Rokusek’s sessions at the 20th Annual SDSTA/SDCTM Joint Conference in Huron.

American Routes Returns to SDPB Radio

Nick Spitzer hosts American Routes.

SDPB Radio: Saturdays, 7pm (6 MT)Music is more than sound. It’s an expression

of emotion, life experience and cultural roots. The weekly American Routes presents the range of American music – blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and Zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical.

The songs and stories on American Routes describe both the community origins of music, musicians and cultures – the “roots” – and the many directions they take over time – the

“routes.” The program

also presents documentary features and artist interviews. Conversations have included musicians as diverse as Willie

The Midcontinent Media Foundation is supporting an SDPB Television documentary on the 2011 flooding in South Dakota through a grant to the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Thank you.

2011 was a record-making year for South Dakota, and SDPB was there with news, information and images of the flooding along the Missouri River. Through the Foundation’s support, SDPB can continue South Dakota’s story. The documentary on the flooding, the aftermath and the plans to prevent future disasters is tentatively scheduled for April.

The Midcontinent Media Foundation is the charitable arm of the Midcontinent family of companies. The Foundation was established in 1987 to provide funding assistance to charitable entities that assist in socially desirable goals within the

communities of which Midcontinent Media Inc. and its subsidaries are a part.
