A Dream in the MakingSDPB1: Tuesday, Aug. 27, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Friday, Aug. 30, 7pm (6 MT) & Midnight (11 MT)PBS.org/black-culture/

Fifty years ago, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made one of the most famous speeches in American history.

SDPB Television celebrates that moment with The March, a new documentary honoring the 50th anniversary of the original March on Washington, D.C. The March premieres on SDPB1 Television on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 8pm (7 MT).

On Aug. 28, 1963, Americans, from the nation’s leaders to the ordinary citizens, were astonished when a quarter million people marched on Washington to call for racial and economic equality. The event forever will be remembered for King’s stirring “I Have a Dream” speech and as a watershed moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

The event was one of many that ushered in sweeping civil rights legislation and a sea change in public opinion.

The March reveals the dramatic story through the remembrances of key players such as Jack O’Dell, Clarence B. Jones, Julian Bond and Andrew Young. Supporters and other testimonials include Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, Roger Mudd, Peter Yarrow and Oprah Winfrey in addition to historians, journalists, authors and ordinary citizens who joined The March.

Check the PBS Black Culture Connection website at PBS.org/black-culture/ for “The March@50,” a five-part series about the progress of Civil Rights, and related videos.

Be Fresh – Rock Garden Tour in Concert

The Rock Garden Tour program on stage.

Turnip your fun! Rock Garden Tour presents a fresh concert experience on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7pm at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls.

Rock Garden Tour, known to SDPB Radio audiences for its affection for South Dakota idiosyncrasies, combines rock music, gardening, South Dakota“isms” and fun. What sprouts is totally unique radio. Now, the radio program is coming to the stage in Sioux Falls. And, later this year, the stage show will become an SDPB Television special.

The title of the live Sioux Falls concert – Rock Garden Tour Presents: High, Wide and Handsome – Stories of Some South Dakotans That Made It Big – offers a hint about the theme of the Aug. 23 show.

Musicians Jami Lynn and Dylan James will be special guests. The Rapid City duo present a mix of folk, bluegrass and jazz.

The 90-minute concert will include an intermission, and be followed by a reception allowing concertgoers to meet the entertainers.

Tickets are $15, general admission, and available at Shop.SDPB.org or by calling 800-456-0766.

Rock Garden Tour, produced in partnership with the Fresh Produce advertising agency in Sioux Falls, is hosted by Flowerman (Producer Ted Heeren), with help from his sidekick, Oil Can. The radio show has been part of the SDPB Radio lineup for several years. The stage version of the show has been presented in smaller venues across the state, and has received rave reviews.

Have you ever felt the need to write a free verse haiku to Woonsocket? Or wondered why Lake County can grow giant sweet potatoes? Rock Garden Tour celebrates the wonder and weirdness of living in South Dakota.

“It’s a journey to a state of mind,” according to Director of SDPB Radio Joe Tlustos.

Heeren and a coterie of colleagues, friends and relatives generally produce Rock Garden Tour with a live in-studio audience. The show features some recurring characters, like Coach (Heeren’s real-life father), and recurring elements, such as the “News from Pierre” or the Family Band, and moves along at a fast pace.

The Rock Garden Tour radio program can be heard on SDPB Radio on the last Saturday of the month at 8pm (7 MT).

August’s Rock Garden Tour concert and subsequent SDPB Television show are supported by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, Local Convenience Stores and Friends of SDPB.On the Cover: Flowerman Ted Heeren

Standing Bear

SDPB1: Thursday, Aug. 1, 8pm (7 MT)An Indian chief who went to court to

prove he was a person changed our country and in the process redefined what it means to be an American. Standing Bear’s Footsteps traces one man’s journey from his Nebraska homeland to a trial that made front page news across America.

Standing Bear’s odyssey began in 1877, when the Ponca tribe was exiled from the Niobrara valley to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. As Standing Bear’s son was dying, he begged his father to take his body home for burial with his ancestors.

In January of 1879, Standing Bear began the long walk north to keep his promise. Before he and his small band could make it home, they were arrested and imprisoned at Fort Omaha. With the secret support of a famous army general, Standing Bear sued the U.S. government for his freedom.

The film weaves interviews, re-creations and present-day scenes to tell a powerful story about human rights.

SDPB Joins Action at Festival of Books

StoryCorps Booth Coming to Rapid City

Garfield

The South Dakota Festival of Books will share the the joy and wonder of the written word Sept. 20-22 in Deadwood.

SDPB’s special guest for the event is Bob Garfield, one of the hosts of the NPR program On The Media. Garfield is an author, columnist, critic, essayist, pundit and international lecturer who specializes in quirky Americana. Recent works include “Can’t Buy Me Like,” “Bedfellows,” “The Chaos Scenario,” “And Now a Few Words From Me” and “Waking Up Screaming from the American Dream.”

SDPB Radio will feature several authors from the event with a special Dakota Midday Book Club program at 11am (Noon

CT) on Friday, Sept. 20, with Host Karl Gehrke.

Garfield will participate in author gatherings at the event and be one of the panelists for a discussion on “What’s Next for News” on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 3pm (4 CT) at the Deadwood Mountain Grand.

SDPB will be on hand throughout with a booth at the Deadwood Mountain Grand.

The annual Festival of Books is a project of the South Dakota Humanities Council.

The mobile recording studio is inside a Silverstream trailer.

Do you have a story worthy of remembrance? StoryCorps’ mobile recording booth will collect stories in Rapid City on Sept. 20-Oct. 16.

StoryCorps preserves stories from all kinds of Americans by bringing people to the mobile studio, recording their stories and preserving them for future generations at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress.

StoryCorps selections regularly air on Fridays on Morning Edition and Saturdays on Weekend Edition.

Storytellers are invited to make appointments to record in the booth with a friend or relative who “interviews” them as they tell their story. Check the September SDPB Magazine to find out how to make an appointment to record your story.

The nonprofit organization’s MobileBooth visited Sioux Falls in June 2007, recording dozens of South Dakota stories for the archives.
