Commander’s Corner By Commander Michael Matich

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

This is my last Scuttlebutt as Commander for the 2015/2016 year and I would like to thank everyone for all

the help during the year. It was quite the learning curve as it had been a while since I was so involved in the

Bridge. Many things in our organization have changed. Please join me in welcoming our incoming

Commander. He is a wonderful person but does need a lot of your help. He is working on putting together

next year’s Bridge and continuing the work of outgoing Commander. Hopefully he can do a better job.

Please welcome incoming Commander Michael Matich. HEY, that’s me. How did that happen!

Our AGM will be held on April 20th at the Confederation Seniors Centre located at 4585 Albert Street,

Burnaby, commencing at 1900 hours. The notice of meeting will be circulated shortly.

Desolation Sound stories and videography by Bob Douglas will follow the AGM. Do you know the

Desolation Sound homesteader who has very strong ties to our Squadron? If you don’t, you will have to

come to the meeting to find out.

Our Change of Watch will be on May 7th at Little Billy’s Steak House located at 6785 Hastings Street,

Burnaby. Happy hour will commence at 1800 hours with dinner at 1900 hours and special awards. See the

calendar for further details.

We have a couple of long standing Education officers who will be retiring from the Bridge this year, Tom

Scottnicki and Ray Lindroos. Please join me in thanking them for the many years of service to our

organization.

The Lindroos’ presented their 2015 trip to Alaska on board Deep Pockets at our March 9th Information night.

Many people came out for the most impressive presentation.

Our spring classes are well underway. The Boating Basics class has finished and Beyond the PCOC (Boating

2), with 6 students, will be writing their exam on April 6th. Introduction to Navigation (Boating 3) is

scheduled to start on April 12th but registration is slow. We have three students from the Boating 2 course

signed up. The decision to split the Boating course into two is currently a work in progress as far as I am con-

cerned. I have talked to a few other squadrons and they are also having problems recruiting students for

Boating 3. We will all be looking at packaging these two courses as one next year. The VHF course started

on March 16th with 14 students and they will be writing the exam on March 30th. Many of these students

have boats. A recent development in CPS-ECP is the change in requirements to become a member. As long

as you have taken any CPS-ECP courses, you can join. We will be approaching all of our students to entice

them to join our organization. Please get this word out to friends, family and fellow boaters. If we do not

run courses, we miss the opportunity to bring in new members. If we do not have new members, it is hard

to put together a Bridge. If we do not have a Bridge, we do not have a Burnaby Power and Sail Squadron.

This is your organization, please help support it and come out to events and volunteer to help. There are still

a few Bridge positions not yet filled, so please call me to help out.

Port Moody, Coquitlam and Burnaby will be holding a safety day at Reed Point marina on June 4th.

Recreational Vessel Courtesy Checks (RVCC) will be offered to boaters who sign up. Once the boat passes

the inspection, a decal is issued to be displayed on the boat. Volunteers are needed to help during the day so

don’t be shy. Give me a call to offer your help. We will be promoting boating safety, the benefits of CPS

membership and boating courses. Inlet Marine will be on site with a sale on safety equipment and will also

be accepting expired flares. Fire extinguisher checks and other events are also being planned for the day, so

stay tuned for further announcements.

Members training to be RVCC providers for safety day.

Our last few Pub night social events have been well attended with all having a lot of fun. We were going to

book another Pub night in April but the Bridge discussed another event which we decided to incorporate in-

to our social schedule. Vancouver squadron is holding their annual Bilgewater Bash at the Royal Vancouver

Yacht Club on April 16th. If you have never been to one, it is an incredible evening. It has been a few years

since Burnaby has attended but when we did, we closed the place down. Please see the calendar for further

details.

The Seattle Sail and Power Squadron is holding their 75th Change of Watch on April 9th at the Queen City

Yacht Club commencing at 1800. There are a number of us planning this most enjoyable trip. Please see the

calendar for further details.

Vancouver Squadron and PMD have set up a new event for all members and friends. This will be a Predicted

Log Race up Indian Arm culminating at one of our CPS member’s dock. The date is still being worked on but

newly refurbished trophies have been made up for this event, one of them being a hollow log. The hollow

contains a bottle of rum.

The cruising season is just around the corner, so please check out the Calendar for dates. Our first cruise is

on the Victoria Day weekend to Gibsons. Cruise master Neal has informed me that he has not heard from

many people. Remember, if we do not have participation, there may not be a Burnaby Power and Sail

Squadron.

June 5th will see a cruise to Ambassador Darlene’s dock in Port Moody, aka Alderwood Landing. Come by

boat, plane car, etc. Details to follow.

As always, please feel free to contact me with your thought and comments.

Cruise Master Report From Neal Tyldsley, P/CDR

On February 20, the squadron had its first social event of the year at the Steamworks Brewery, eighteen of our members attended this friendly neighbourhood tasting room. The beer was great, we ordered pizza from Stan's, as Darlene says, it went down good. I thank Lorne for suggesting the venue and Jule Duke for handling all the logistics .

The next SSPS event is their Change of Watch on April 9 at the Queen City Yacht Club. There will be a few of us attending. For information on this event please give me a shout, I would like you to join us.

On the cruising side, I have made reservations at Gibsons Marina for 8 vessels for the Victoria Day long weekend, May 2o—22. The slips are on A dock and are designated to LOA lengths, so the sooner you book a slip to match your LOA the better. Let them know you are with BPS so that we will all be together. If you book the slip on your credit card, you can cancel later.

Itinerary for this cruise will be the same: Appies on the dock on Saturday, dinner at a Greek restaurant on Main Street for a group dinner on Sunday.

Our next cruise has been aptly named " Mike's Birthday Cruise," we will all celebrate CDR'S Mike's birthday on Alderwood Landing located at 940 Alderside, Port Moody, B. C. Rumor has it that Mike has run a special batch of wine for this special party, he is so generous! You can arrive by air, boat or road on June 05 at 1100 hrs, the squadron will be supplying the dogs, burgers and non alcoholic bevies, so BYOB! Contact your Cruise Master for docking arrangements via email: [email protected] or phone: 604.298.5398.

On March 9th 2016, I attended a Burnaby Power Squadron Information Night. The theme was

South East Alaska 2015, “The Missing Summer.” Long time Burnaby Squadron members, Ray

and Denise Lindroos had cruised to South East Alaska in 2015 on their 40-foot Ocean Alexander

Trawler.

After 5 months of preparation, they were ready to begin their odyssey on June 1st. Mother Na-

ture had different thoughts. With winds in Vancouver harbour exceeding 30 knots, the depar-

ture was delayed for another day. On 02 June, Deep Pockets and her crew ventured out of their

home port at the Burrard Yacht Club in North Vancouver.

The wind had subsided to 20 knots, but the seas at Cape Roger Curtis were confused and the

decision was made to spend the night in Gibson’s, a mere 20 nautical miles away.

This was the first step on their 122-day journey. They called it the “Missing Summer” as they left

Vancouver before the beginning of summer and returned on October 1st well after the end of

summer. Also, while B.C. was experiencing one of the sunniest and warmest summers on rec-

ord, Alaska was experiencing the opposite. Ray believes that Wrangell is a Tlingit word for “the

land of non-stop rain.”

They cruised 1956 nautical miles at an average speed of 7.5 knots. They had 262 hours on their

engines, and they consumed 7004 litres (1848 U.S. gallons) of diesel fuel. In addition to the

above they also put 387 nautical miles on their tender, a 13 foot Boston Whaler.

Even with all their preparation, their generator died on day number 9 of the trip. Fortunately,

they were near Port McNeill on Vancouver Island and they were able to find a replacement.

Numerous boat bucks and 18 days later, they were able to untie the dock lines and head north

passing Cape Caution. As Ray always says, “Fuel is the cheapest thing you ever put in you boat.”

Once you round Cape Caution the boating world changes. The number of vessels you see de-

creases. You are often the only boat in an anchorage. The ratio of sail boats versus power boats

increases in the favour of the sail boats and you do see a number of mega yachts. Ray has dis-

covered a new class of ships that he calls Giga Yachts. On a Giga Yacht, the colour of the heli-

copter matches the colour of the vessel’s hull.

On their way north they had numerous encounters with grizzly bears, especially when taking the

dog to shore. Nothing like hopping back into the dingy just as a bear pokes his head out of the

bushes. They also encountered famous people, like retired Air Force four star General George

Babbitt, who was also the original drummer for the 1960’s group “The Venture’s.” North of Pe-

tersburg, icebergs were a navigational hazard, and the smaller ones do not show up on Radar.

Humpback whales were a common sight. Ray and Denise would shut down the engines and

depth sounders and watch the whales swim around their vessel, often looking at the eye of the

whale.

They cruised up Tracy Arm to view the North Sawyer Glacier. Tracy Arm is a fjord that has

mountains that tower 3000 – 4000 feet on either side and the water is over a 1000 feet deep.

They watched the North Sawyer Glacier calve creating a significant wake in the bay and they

managed to use their landing net to scoop up “bergie bits” to use for boat drinks while anchored

in Tracy Arm Cove.

They also discovered that this entire coast has numerous abandoned canneries. In a time before

flash freezing and refrigeration, canning was the way to preserve salmon. Most of the canneries

have been lost to fire or decay. The North Pacific Cannery in Prince Rupert is being restored and

is a must see. The remnants of the cannery at Butedale on Princess Royal Island is also worthy of

a visit.

Obtaining fuel and provisions was not a problem. In order to service the large number of com-

mercial fishing boats, most harbours have fuel and groceries. As it must be brought in by barge,

it is a bit more expensive, but at least they have fuel.

If you want to see wildlife, amazing scenery, large commercial fishing fleets, and meet some in-

teresting people, go and explore South East Alaska. If you want to save some money in the pro-

cess go on a cruise ship.

Ray and Denise will go back to S.E. Alaska in a few years. They both said it was a true adventure.

Oak Bay Marine Group selling its three Vancouver Island resorts

The Oak Bay Marine Group is selling its three Vancouver Island resorts — Painter’s Lodge at Campbell River, April Point Resort

and Spa on nearby Quadra Island, and Canadian Princess Lodge in Ucluelet.

The properties are being marketed through Colliers International. No asking prices have been made public. The resorts will re-

main open for business.

“The hope is that a buyer will come forward who shares the goal of providing exceptional vacation experiences — one who will

operate the resorts with the same mix of tradition, vision and passion that our current staff exemplify,” Brook Castelsky, chief

operating officer, said in a statement Friday.

Bob Wright, who died in 2013, owned the resorts as part of his Beach Drive-based Oak Bay Marine Group.

A strong advocate of sport fishing, Wright played a key role in attracting international attention to the Campbell River area,

dubbed the salmon capital of the world, and in promoting B.C. tourism. The resorts were Wright’s dream and passion.

They are being sold so that the company can focus on its core marina business, Castelsky said.

“Without question, there is significant sadness surrounding this decision, but there is also excitement in the fact that this will pro-

vide us with the opportunity to return to our roots and to enhance our existing marina business and ultimately grow it throughout

the Pacific Northwest. The marina business is where we have considerable experience and expertise.”

In the past 25 years, sports fishing has evolved into the resort business, he said. Painter’s Lodge guests include anglers who go out

in rowboats to catch a Tyee, a big Chinook salmon weighing a minimum of 30 pounds. John Wayne, Bob Hope, and Bing Crosby

were among famous visitors.

The original hotel was destroyed in a 1985 fire. Wright bought the site and rebuilt, opening in 1988. Today, Painter’s has 94 rooms,

three restaurants, a choice of outdoor activities and a shuttle across Discovery Passage to the 56-room April Point. Wright bought

April Point in 1998 and built a spa.

On the Island’s west coast, the 46-room Canadian Princess fishing lodge is named after the vessel moored nearby. Its onshore

lodge offers fishing and wildlife viewing experiences.

The Oak Bay Marine Group’s holdings include the Oak Bay Marina, Pedder Bay RV Resort and Marina, Ladysmith Marina and Cape

Santa Maria Beach Resort in the Bahamas, as well as Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the Wax Works, and Oregon Undersea Gardens in

Newport, Oregon.

Tourism consultant Frank Bourree, of Chemistry Consulting, said the three properties need investment and more aggressive mar-

keting.

The time is right to sell, he said. “We are on the world stage here and those are first-class locations in beautiful settings,” Bourree

said.

“There has been so much foreign investment in B.C., this is going to attract a lot of attention.”

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land By Barbara Erickson Note: My pilgrimage took place from January 6—18, 2016. The 39 pilgrims were from my church, Saint Mark’s Cathe-dral and Emmanuel, Mercer Island. We visited Galilee, Bethlehem and the West Bank, where we were based in Old Je-rusalem. Throughout, our accommodations were comfortable, the food delicious, and the cities we visited—beyond belief! This is the boating experience of my trip.

After a long night’s travel, we had landed in Tel Aviv and traveled north by bus to Galilee, where we spent our first 3 days at the Pilgerhaus Tabgha, a German guest house.

Waking up that first morning, we could hardly believe we were in the Holy Land and on the banks of the Sea of Galilee!

One of the things we did here was to sail on the Sea of Galilee in a replica (adapted for tourists) of the fishing boat that might have been used by Jesus or the fishermen. The boat we traveled on was called the Mark 9000, the seas were very calm and seagulls followed our every move.

Our pilgrimage guide, Tony, narrated the sailing and we could see the Golan Heights across the way. Looking back to shore, I also saw a fleet of sailboats. Out for a day sail or maybe taking sailing lessons?

We also visited the Beit Yigal Alon Museum and Education Center which houses a 2000-year old boat that was found in the mud banks of the Sea of Galilee. The excavation of this find was a major conservation effort once the archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Association inspected it.

It hasn’t been linked with any specific figures from the past, but it is called the “Jesus boat” since it is known Jesus visited the area often.

This was a trip of a life-time for me and there was so much history, and politics, that I still can’t fully compre-hend where I have been and what I saw. I’m sharing the boating experience and photos, but there was much more to see at the Mount of Beatitudes, Bethlehem and Manger Square, the West Bank where we rode Jack the camel, visited a Israeli Settlement, and spent the majority of our time in Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, we walked the Way of the Cross, visited many churches, and marveled at the way cars navigated the narrow streets shared with pedestrians!
