Green Fair gears up for bigger things next year

Its the only true GreenFair in Macomb County.

For the fourth year, or-ganizers have taken onesummer day and turned

    Veterans Memorial Park

into an eco-friendly hav-en, complete with dis-plays, vendors and dem-onstrations for residentsand non-residents seek-ing ways to both savemoney and help pre-serve the environment.

Were happy withhow it went today, saidone of the events orga-nizers, Maria Martinez. This is the last year ofthis being a small event.Next year were going toreally take it to the nextlevel.

Bigger sponsors, county involvement anda scope reaching beyond

the realm of St. ClairShores alone is the plan,Martinez said.

We see that there is agood opportunity to real-ly grow this, she said.People really want it.

Martinez said the hopeis Veterans MemorialPark will continue to bethe events location.

    We would really like

to see it stay here, shesaid. Its just going toreach into other commu-nities in the area, andhave more of a wide-ranging reach.

The amped-up effort issomething that patrons

would like to see, ac-cording to SteveSzamanski.

    I come here every

year, Szamanski said.Being more green is agreat lifestyle for people.I think something likethis helps people to un-derstand this a little bet-ter. The more this greenfair has to offer people interms of options andideas, the better I think

Councilman Pete Rubino is offering $100 to anyresident presenting him with a photo of a rat drink-ing out of a bird bath.

Rubino posted the reward after again expressingexasperation about the citys CommunityDevelopment and Inspection department issuingunrelated violations against residents asking for thecitys help to eradicate rats.

During the council comments portion of the Aug.19 council agenda, Rubino asked again if it was thecitys policy to ticket violations for anything but rat-related issues when called to help residents.

Mayor Kip Walby replied no.Its been over a year and a half and were still do-ing it, Rubino complained, telling his colleagueshes been telling residents to call the city and theyare being ticketed for issues unrelated to creatingharborage or water for rats.

They should not becited for anything otherthan what they calledout for, Rubino said, pleading for account-ability.

Maybe we need tofire somebody because

enough is enough.People dont want togive their address be-cause they dont trustus.

A new resident wastold not to call the cityby the neighbors be-cause they will be nit-picked, Rubino said, adding, They calledanyway and got a viola-tion.

Rubino shared anoth-er instance were aneighborhood joined to-gether and called thecity for help. The city

wont put out bait boxesbecause of a bird bathand an indentation inthe cement porch thatcould be a water sourcefor a rat, Rubinoshared.

How horrible theperson gets all their

The White Elephant Trunk Sale was a hit this year for the Historical Society, hosting 50 vendors offering a variety ofitems.

Council castigates engineer over street repairs

    After fielding a flurry of

    complaints about ongoing

    street and sidewalk re-

    pairs across the city, coun-

    cil requested John Chown,

    the citys consulting engi-

    neer from Anderson,

    Eckstein and Westrick Inc.

to answer their concerns.Chown, who is sup-

posed to be overseeingwater main replacements

    and related sidewalk and

    street repairs, stood before

    council for more than an

hour at its Aug. 19 meet-

    ing.

Before Chown had achance to explain himself,

    Mayor Kip Walby fired the

    first of many salvos

    against Chowns work

    performance.

    You are our engineer,

    Youre supposed to have

    people there, you're sup-

    posed to make sure the

    streets are clean, roads are

    roads and are done cor-

    rectly. Thats what we pay

you to do and to be honest

    with you, you havent done

    a very good job, Walby

    began.

We hire AEW to moni-tor and protect the city; we

    expect better things.

    Chown responded by

saying he too is experienc-ing frustration, a com-

    ment he repeated many

    times during his presenta-

    tion.

Walby then laid out a se-ries of complaints waged

    by residents including the

    quality of work, how and

    when its being done and

    expressed consternation

    about sidewalks being

    pitched incorrectly, no

    work being done, the con-

struction mess, streetflooding and the inconve-

    nience to residents who

cant park in front of their

    own houses and have to

    walk great distances from

    their cars to get home.

    Chown explained con-

tractors are expected tofollow the specifications

    written into the contracts.

    We dont like to see

projects go on like this, he

    said, further explaining

the methods and meansare up to the contractor.

    Were not telling the con-

tractor when to be in andwhat to do. If not done

    properly, the contractor is

    charged. There was noth-

ing done out of spec at the

    time.

    He later added any sub

    par work must be redone

    at the contractors ex-

    pense.Chown went on to up-

    date council on the water

    main replacement pro-

    gram, saying the project

    on Edgewater and Port

    seem to be going fairly

    good.

The water main, he said,is installed and in service,

    and topsoil and seeding is

    done.

    Concrete work on Port

    from Jefferson to Harper

    was supposed to be com-

    pleted last week.

The project is nearingthe end of its schedule andis a little bit behind, he

    said.

    Work on Fresard is al-

    most done, he said, add-

    ing hydro seeding is com-

    pleted and the content of

    weeds in the seed mixture

    is being addressed. That

project was supposed to becomplete Aug. 16.

    The water main on

    Maxine is complete, work

on the storm sewer is ex-

    pected to begin his week

    and the project is currently

    on schedule, Chown said.

On Bayview, the watermain and paving should be

    finished and Kipling is the

    next on the list.

    Detour and Talbot,

    where most of the com-

    plaints have been waged,

has had the water main in-

    stalled and in service and

    the streets are in various

stages of restoration,Chown said, adding on

    Detour, the concrete side-

    walks and driveways have

    been replaced. Topsoil

had been added but due to

    rain, it washed away and

    weeds started to grow be-

    fore grass seed was putdown.

    Chown said the contrac-

    tor sprayed the weeds two

    weeks ago and started last

    week on regrading topsoil

    for seed. Talbot was re-

seeded Aug. 16 and is the

overall project is a little bitfurther behind.

    Councilman John Caron

    said that project was start-

    ed in April with comple-

    tion expected in July.

    Based on his personal ob-

    servations and comments

    from residents, Caron said

numerous sidewalk slabswere less than 4 inches in

    depth, as required in the

    project specifications.Caron then asked

    Chown to explain penal-

    ties for the lateness and

    poor workmanship as-

    sessed to the contractor.

Chown said those are to beworked out with the city.

    As for the concrete

    thickness, Chown said he

    personally checked and

    determined while measur-

    ing may indicate the slab

is between 2 to 3 inches,

Donna Clusak and Samantha Russell came to the

White Elephant and Trunk sale last Saturday

    morning looking for specific items.

I need something for the patio, Russell said.

Something that looks rustic and antique.Moments later, she found an old bird cage with

    beautiful patina.

    Perfect, she said.

Meanwhile, Clusak was in search of jewelry.

Its my addiction, she smiled. I love antique

    costume jewelry.

By the time the pair made their way past about 50

vendors who set up shop for the day in the parking

lot behind the library, she had a small bag filledwith enough rings, bracelets and broaches to

soothe her addiction for the time being.

This was great, Russell said. It was a great va-

riety and it was good, quality stuff. I love it. Cant

    wait to come backagain.

    The trunk sale is the

    third annual, but this

    year, according to

    Historical Society mem-

    ber Ann Powell, was re-

    vamped with the hopes

of ramping up participa-tion and popularity.

    Its bigger than it was

    last year and thats what

    we hoped at the very

    least, Powell said. We

    made some changes like

    opening it up to vendors

    who wanted two spots

and we gave a discountfor that. We allowed

    items other than an-

    tiques. Things like that.

    Everybody seems to be

    happy.

    Evidence of the suc-

cess can be seen in the

    numbers, Powell said.

    We doubled the ven-

dors from last year, shesaid. Which is good. Im

    going around with sur-

    vey cards today and see-

    ing what suggestions

    and comments people

    have so we can improve

    upon it even more next

    year.Funds raised through

    spot rentals goes toward

    the groups efforts to

    help preserve the citys

    history, such as its histor-

    ical markers program.

    This and the success

of it are a big help to us

(the historical society),Powell said. We have

    other events like the Art

    Fair and the quilt raffle

that help, too, but this is

    a great event and were

    very happy with how it

    turned out this year.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2013 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 5A

    By John McTaggartStaff Writer

For a few hours last Saturday night,

    Veterans Memorial Park wound the

clock backward for visitors, thanks to

80s Night presented by the St. Clair

Shores Youth Council and the Cool

    City Committee.

I read about this in the Connectionand got my 80s clothes out of the clos-

    et, said resident Andrea Clawson.

    Its like, totally awesome idea.

Clawson and hundreds of 80s cul-

ture, music and era lovers converged

in the park for dance contests, cos-

tume contests as well as an outdoor

    movie, Pretty In Pink.

We were trying to get to parentswho lived through the 80s, and their

kids who grew up with that culture,

    said Youth Council member Cody

Kellehan. We wanted to find some-

thing that would let everyone connect.

We were trying to find something that would bring these two genera-tions together. We think this was a good way to do that.

The partnership between the Cool City Committee and the Youth Council

was both unique and productive, according to Youth Council member RonnieJones.

They provided the funding for this, which is really important of course, Jones said.

And we sort of organized it and put it all together. Its a great partnership, and were very

happy and proud of the fact that they worked with us and we worked with them. Its great.

    Eastpointe res-

    ident Danni

    DeRosa, 13,

    came all decked

    out in her 80sgear.

    Half of the

    clothes are from

my moms clos-et, she said. But

    if I could, Id

    dress like this ev-

    ery day. I love it.

    The music isgreat. The

    clothes, every-

    thing about the

    80s I love. My

    moms here too

    and were going

    to have a blast to-

    gether.

Mike Bender, foreground, was oneof over one dozen participants in theevent's costume contest. Bender fin-ished second in the contest.

The 80s fest concluded witha showing of one of the erasmost popular films, PrettyIn Pink.

According to committeemember Christian de Ron,

    the idea was spurred by

    something members no-

    ticed at last years Green

    Fair.

A year ago Joe and I

    were sitting at the Green

Fair and we were next tothe Cool City Committee

    display, de Ron said.

    They had a rain barrel

    there that they were raf-

fling off. It was getting a lot

of traffic. So we said what

can we do to get more in-

teraction and more in-volvement with some of

    the projects. We thought

    that we would get some-

    thing to give away. Thats

how the idea came to be.

    We want to bring envi-

    ronmental awareness into

    the schools, St. John said.

We want to bring volun-teerism in the schools.

    Thats how were doing it,

    through this idea, through

    this contest.

    The process is simple.

    Theres an application

form that they have to fillout, St. John said. They

fill that out and track the

    hours they volunteer with

    our programs.

    de Ron said students can

    also develop programs of

    their own, providing they

    first get the committees

    approval.These high school stu-

    dents then spend the

    school year volunteering

    their time to these projects,

    logging those hours, and in

May of next year the kay-

aks will be awarded to one

    student at each highschool.

    This is exciting, St.

John said. It really is an

    exciting project.

    Its exciting and educa-

    tional, de Ron added.

    Theres nothing better

    than getting out on the

lake, de Ron said. You dothat and you get a better

    appreciation of what it

    means to protect it.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2013 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 7A

there is more cement un-derneath the ground.

    Councilman Pete

    Rubino disagreed. He said

he used a ruler himself and

because of the rain, the sub

    grade material had

    washed out, making it

very easy to tell it wasntclose to 4 inches.

    During his visit, Rubino

said he did not see one in-

    spector onsite.

    I was very frustrated

    myself, Chown said. We

will not stand for that, he

    said, adding he heard an

inspector was onsite andwas told everything was

    OK.

    Vitale questioned the

    length of the warranty on

    the work and told Chown

    he wants the contractor to

check the entire street forsubstandard concrete

    depths.

    Walby added any addi-

tional costs are to be onAEWs dime.

    You do what you have

to do to get it done and

make sure we got what we

paid for and thats 4 inch

    sidewalks, he said.

    Because south side

    Talbot residents recently

paid to have damagedsidewalks replaced last

    year, Caron wants to re-

    fund residents for the

    work, further stating the

    project came in under bud-

    get and the additional

funds could be used for the

    reimbursement.

Acting City ManagerMike Smith said hed have

    to discuss that with City

    Attorney Robert Ihrie be-

    fore going forward with a

    rebate.

    Turning to Detour,

    Caron relayed there is 1/4

to 1/2 inch of dirt on the

street that was recentlycleaned by the citys

    Department of Public

    Works and pointed out a

    water shut off cover that

    does not fit the hole.

    Councilman Chris

    Vitale also pointed out two

    sidewalk slabs pitched in-

    to each other were re-

    placed and the repait

wasnt any better than theoriginal job.

    What do you have to

    say to that?' Vitale asked.

Im kind of tired of hav-

    ing resident be our inspec-

    tors thats what we pay

    you for, Vitale said. I

    dont think the contractor

that did the work on Talbotshould be working for the

    city.

    Chown revealed the

    same contractor handling

    Talbot also had the Detour

    project.

    Future complaints will

    be presented to incoming

City Manager Philip Ludoswhen he takes over the po-

sition Aug. 28.Welcome to St. Clair

    Shores, Smith quipped.

Its when autumn arrives in Michigan. And theres no better

place to see the dynamic colors of a trillion trees than along its

    highways, country roads and coastlines.

Michigan.org offers the following best time to take a Pure

Michigan fall vacation color tour via loops through designated

    towns. Here's a sampling:

    Upper Peninsula

A great fall color tour adventure depends on great fall color.

Know when the colors are peaking by checking the most cur-

rent fall color conditions at Michigan.gov.Michigan's U.P. is best enjoyed mid-September to early

    October.

Houghton, Eagle River, Copper Harbor Michigans fall

colors come first to the trees of the Keweenaw Peninsula, the

states northernmost point. The crooked finger of land that juts

into Lake Superior puts on its annual show from about mid-

September to early October in a stunning display of reds, or-

anges and golds that blankets the hills and ridges and forms

colorful tunnels on winding two-lane roads.

Marquette, Negaunee, Au Train This Central Upper

Peninsula fall driving tour includes tree-lined country roads,

waterfalls, historic sites and a stunning drive along the Lake

Superior shore. Any road winding through the Central U.P. will

show you trees ranging from a subtle yellow to brilliant red.

The peace and quiet of this period is unmatched at any other

time of the year.Begin your tour in Marquette, the largest city in the U.P.
