Lt. Col. Dan Burtz studied his target, gauged his distance and steadied his nerve. With a slight kick of the stirrup, he signaled his horse to run. In a full gallop, he unsheathed his sabre and swung deftly as he rode past the target.

It all happened so fast, Burtz could barely tell if his effort had produced the intended result, but when a pair of sliced melons dropped to the turf he knew this ride was indeed successful.

The next time Burtz rode down the course, he attempted to thread his sabre through a dangling ring, and the next time, he used a pistol to shoot a balloon while his horse, Peponita, jumped over an obstacle.

In all, Burtz, 50th Standardization and Evaluation section chief, competed in seven events at the National Cavalry Competition Sept. 18-22 at Fort Riley, Kansas and he left with more than his share of hardware. He took third place in Combat Horsemanship, third in Military Horsemanship and garnered a first-place medal in Authenticity for his portrayal of an 1861 Dragoon Trooper. A Dragoon is a Soldier who typically rode into battle on horseback, but dismounted and fought on foot once he reached the front line.

Not bad for a first-time competitor. An avid horseman and cavalry re-enactor for

much of the past decade, Burtz has always been stationed on either coast during past cavalry competitions, which he said usually take place at installations in the country’s midsection.

“This year, I was fortunate to be stationed at Schriever when the competition was held in Kansas,” he said. “But, I made the decision to compete about a month before the event, so I didn’t have much time to train. Thankfully, I received some help from the Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard.”

The FCMCG’s full-time mission is to repli-cate the U.S. Cavalry from the 1800s, perform ceremonies on Fort Carson and at local parades

and rodeos, educate the local community about horses and keep the cavalry tradition alive.

Army Master Sgt. Shawn Farnsworth of FCMCG invited Burtz to Fort Carson for training and said he got the most out of two days as was possible.

“He didn’t know quite what to expect and his horse had never jumped before so I rode one of our horses around, we played follow the leader and she [Peponita] figured it out,” Farnsworth said. “This experience, I think, worked well for both us and Lt. Col. Burtz. He executed the pointers we gave him and scored points during the competition and we gained someone in our cavalry who has extensive knowledge about the history and authenticity of the topic.”

According to Farnsworth, who also com-peted along with his team at the event, Burtz’s interpretation of an 1861 Dragoon Trooper was spot on.

“He looked great,” Farnsworth said. “His equipment was accurate and he really repre-sented what the Army Cavalry looked like at the time. We made him an honorary member of our team and even asked him to lead our formation during the pass and review at the end of the competition.”

Next year’s U.S. Cavalry Competition is slated to take place at Fort Carson and Burtz is already prepping for it.

“This is a hobby so I don’t want to get too se-rious about it,” he said. “I’m pleased, however, with the way Peponita performed, especially not having jumped before. She has a good tem-perament and an easy-going personality and I’m excited to compete again. I plan to improve. Now that I’ve been through this experience I know what to practice and get repetition on, so next time I’ll be more prepared.”

For people who want to learn more about cavalry history or re-enacting Civil and Indian War battles, Burtz recommends vis-iting the U.S. Cavalry Association website at www.uscavalry.org.

Commentary by Lt. Col. Stephen Finn

50th Civil Engineer Squadron commander

Friday is Wingman Day at Schriever AFB. At the Pentagon, where I just came from, I don’t think we ever did much for the occasion. We may have had some resiliency training and maybe a commander’s call, but I honestly believe I spent most of the time working staff packages. Now that I’m back at a base (happi-ness is the Pentagon in your rear view mirror!) and have the honor to command, I started thinking about what Wingman Day means to me and my unit. So, like any conscientious writer who is trying to get ideas for an article, I did an Internet search for “Wingman Day” to see what I could borrow from other, more accomplished authors. So what did I find out from my quality time spent with Google other than the score of the Eagles game, of course? What I found was quite interesting and com-pletely contradictory.

The Internet is, for the most part, broken up into two camps. The first camp has the of-ficial articles from wing public affairs offices that quote leadership and speak to the vir-tues of Wingman Day. The very first link was for a 2011 Peterson article titled “Wingman Day strengthens relationships, increases well-being.” Peterson had a commander’s call that focused on the four pillars of Airmen Fitness — physical, social, mental and spiritual. Col. Chris Crawford, 21st Space Wing commander, was quoted as saying, “Wingman Day, very simply, is about us looking out for each other in all four of those aspects.” They also had a safety brief and then split up for team building activities including lunch, hiking and scav-enger hunts.

The next camp come from the unofficial comments associated with articles found online. For example, a rather opinionated

Airman DannyJ (Internet handle) said, “Just got the Winter 2011 Wingman Day Schedule from the Sqn. What a waste. Any good super-visor, section sup would cover this stuff on a more than semi-annual basis. Fairly surprised PT didn’t sneak in here somewhere.” That was certainly different than Colonel Crawford’s comments. Is that really how our Airmen feel about Wingman Day?

So what does Wingman Day mean to me and my unit? Is it a time for us to take a break from work and reflect on those things that we can do to promote resiliency for ourselves and our fellow Wingmen? Or is it a monumental waste of time that “any good supervisor” could cover in a “more than semi-annual basis”.

Zen references aside, I think the truth lies within each of us independently. Like most things in life, it is our attitude and how we

approach something that determines what we get out of it.

I once had a boss who liked to say that at-titude is crucial to success. It is the one thing you can pick when you wake up in the morn-ing. You can’t pick the things that happen to you during the day, but you can pick how you choose to deal with those things.

That attitude can be applied to Wingman Day as well. If I approach Wingman Day with the wrong attitude, I won’t get anything out of it. If I approach it as an opportunity to add another tool to my tool belt, then it can be a successful day.

Wingman Day, after all, is just a single day, but we need to apply the concept every day. We are all important cogs in the wheel of na-tional security. So I think I’ll probably side with Colonel Crawford (and AFSPC guidance) over “DannyJ” and reiterate to my squadron what Wingman Day means to me.

1. I care about what happens to my squad-ron. They are my family.

2. We can’t control operations tempo or what happens to us each day, but we can con-trol how we deal with it.

3. We can control how we take care of ourselves.

3. We can also control how well we treat others.

4. This is not a program, but an approach to better equip us to handle stress. It’s about lifelong change. Expect it to take time.

5. By caring, committing, communicating, connecting and celebrating, you and your fam-ily members can beat self-defeating behaviors and feelings of hopelessness and despair and become healthier, happier and more resilient. When you purposely do these things every day, you give hope to others.

Happy Wingman Day. Engineers lead the way.

“Last year, our installation goal was set at $248,000; we met and exceeded that goal, raising more than $260,000,” said Capt. Lorraine Sult, 50 SW Staff Judge Advocate civil law chief and Schriever CFC installation project of-ficer. “This year, we have set the goal higher than what was raised last year. Our goal for this year is $265,000.”

During the kickoff event, 14 mem-bers, units and private organizations participated in the chili cook off and attendees judged the best chili on base. Schriever also hosted a silent auction for electronics, games and more.

The highlight of the event based on audience participation was the pie-your-commander contest. Each com-mander as well as 50 SW leadership were pied by their members.

Team Schriever also hosted more than 60 Pikes Peak regional charities for a charity open house. Representatives provided information about their re-spective charity organizations.

“In many ways, the contribution that you make [through the CFC] is a volunteer opportunity within our com-munity,” said Thomas Gonzalez, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Pikes Peak Chapter, one of the many charity organizations included in CFC. “You are truly a force mul-tiplier that makes a difference in our community.”

Tech. Sgt. Sarah Law, 50 SW ground safety manager and Schriever CFC IPO, said CFC is a great way for Schriever personnel to give back to the community.

“We encourage everyone to take a look at what CFC does and how it af-fects not only our community, but the whole world, as well.” Law said. “It is important to remember that contribu-tions can be made for local, national and international charities. The CFC’s impact is far-reaching and touches so many lives, whether directly or indi-rectly, and donations go a long way.”

By Scott PraterSchriever Sentinel

The Schriever Health and Wellness Center is focusing on the safe use of supplements during a campaign that began this month.

Recent events involving pre-workout supplements have predicated the Department of Defense to initiate a new safety campaign, called Operation Supplement Safety.

Staff Sgt. Vanessa Arthur, diet therapist at the Schriever HAWC, explains that active duty and Reserve Airmen, retirees, family members and DoD civilans now have a valuable informational tool that will help them not only choose the best supplement to suit their fitness goals, but also help them avoid dangerous products.

“The website, http://hprc-online.org, can help people on a wide variety of levels,” Arthur said. “It’s really a one-stop research shop for almost anything you want to know about popular supplements.”

Dietary supplements have become a major industry in the United States, mainly because their makers can claim their products produce spectacular results. But, Arthur cautioned potential supplement users to conduct extensive research before using them because they are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.

If someone wants to lose weight, be able to lift more weight or have more energy during their workouts, those situa-tions aren’t medical conditions, so supplement companies can claim that their products increase energy levels by 25 percent, regardless as to whether that’s true.

“It’s easy to find advertisements on the internet that tout products as the best pre-workout supplements available,” Arthur said. “Some contain 1,3-dimethylamylamine, also known as DMAA, an ingredient that has been banned by the governments of Australia and Canada due to concerns about the safety of the drug, which has been linked to high blood pressure, headaches, vomiting, strokes, cardiac dis-orders, and death. It has also been temporarily removed from store shelves DoD wide.”

The new DoD website not only informs readers on DMAA, it also discusses the ingredient’s side effects, how it interacts with other substances such as caffeine and relevant news about the product.

“This site will provide that information,” Arthur said. “But, it also will tell you about how effective a supplement is on a scale from one to 10. It goes on to explain the pros and cons of individual supplements and it explains what each ingredient does to the human body.”

Tech. Sgt. Ryan Gangadeen, 1st Space Operations Squadron’s unit fitness program manager, said he is con-

stantly asked for dietary supplement advice, so he sought help from Arthur to get the latest guidance.

“Sergeant Arthur sent me the website address and I was impressed,” he said. “The site was easy to navigate and it’s different from other fitness websites in that it allows you to search for a specific supplement.”

Arthur explained that the new website’s true value stems from its reliability of information.

In the past, if an Air Force member wanted to research a supplement on the internet, they would have to sift through the multiples of sites that tout the product. Many of those sites are owned and operated by the supplement manu-facturer so it’s difficult to determine if you’re receiving legitimate information or a paid advertisement disguised as an independent fitness site.

“This website and campaign aims to make people more aware and it should help those who want to know exactly what they’re putting into their bodies,” she said. “It does the research for you.”

Arthur said HAWC staff will hang posters, set up an information table outside the dining facility and brief squadron and group commanders on supplement safety at the wing standup.

For more information about supplement safety contact the Schriever HAWC at 567-4292.

sheet, the organization started out as the “Blue Cube” in Sunnyvale, Calif. with support from Lockheed Martin. The squadron moved to Vandenberg AFB in July 2010 in preparation for the closing of Onizuka Air Force Station Sept. 15, 2011.

When asked why the unit was not re-located to Colorado Springs, Wulfestieg said, “The Air Force Satellite Control Network operates two separate nodes, and when directed to close Onizuka AF Station, it was decided that Vandenberg AFB was well suited to host the 21 SOPS node.”

With the recent declassification of the CORONA satellite imagery recon-naissance program, the public is now

able to catch a glimpse into some of the clandestine missions 21 SOPS and its predecessors proudly contributed to during the Cold War.

According to the National Reconnaissance Office’s official website, the CORONA program revolutionized satellite imagery technology, special-izing in photographic reconnaissance of the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China from 1959 to 1972. The program’s self-stabilized KH-4 satellites employed an array of state-of-the-art panoramic cameras, rotating automatically throughout orbit to al-low continuous photography of Earth’s surface.

Today, 21 SOPS handles the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Air Force Satellite Control Network sites at Vandenberg AFB, Kaena Point, Hawaii, Andersen AFB, Guam, and Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean

Territories, as well as Global Positioning System ground antennas and monitor-ing stations in Hawaii, Diego Garcia, and the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands..

“Simply put, our mission system works as a switch-board between the satellite and the organizations operating it,” said Wulfestieg.

Since its inception in 1961, 21 SOPS has been an integral part of strategic operations for the Air Force and for national security.

“We have taken part in operations ranging from satellite launches to Space Shuttle support,” Wulfestieg said. “Remaining in California today, 21 SOPS handles the Air Force Satellite Control Network node as well as anten-nas around the world. They have been, and will remain, a critically- important capability for the Air Force and for the United States.”

Dress Right

Dress and apperanceFirst impressions are often drawn based upon appearance. That is why appearance matters as much as attitude about being a military member. Projecting a good military image reflects not only on the individual, but also on the Air Force. Appearance matters both on and off duty and involves more than just the clothes you wear. Projecting a professional image is paramount.

By Staff Sgt. Robert Cloys50th Space Wing Public Affairs

The 50th Force Support Squadron is sched-uled to hold its Expo and Information Fair 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the main fit-ness center here. The expo is one of four large events 50 FSS hosts on the base annually.

“The 50th Force Support Squadron offers a tremendous array of services and programs of which many may not be aware, and this event provides a one-stop location where all areas are represented,” said Lynn Sleeth, 50 FSS marketing manager. “The Schriever community can pick up all sorts of informa-tion and have time to ask specific questions of the program experts.”

This year, due to an expressed interest in higher education, 15 academic entities are slated to be present.

“The event may sound like a standard info

fair, but it is has grown to be one of our most well-attended, with interest from active duty members, retirees, civilians and contractors,” said Sleeth.

However, information is not the only thing attendees stand to gain. Active-duty members, civilians, contractors and family members have shown up to the fair by the hundreds to win big ticket items.

“I’m looking forward to attending the info fair again this year,” said Staff Sgt. Megan Mattos, 50th Space Wing executive assis-tant to the command chief. “I’ve had the opportunity to attend in the past and was surprised at how many different organiza-tions were there. It really opened my eyes to the opportunities and services that Schriever provides. This year, I’m hoping I’ll walk away with one of the big prizes.”

Traffic flow of 1,000-plus attendees is ex-

pected this year.“If anything has changed, it’s more and

better prizes for the drawings,” she said. “The sponsors and other supporting agen-cies always bring lots of swag to distribute, but participants should make sure they use their sponsor passport and drop it in the drawing for a 42-inch high definition LCD TV or [tablet].“

If prizes aren’t enough to get Schriever members involved, 50 FSS also plans to pro-vide a free lunch to attendees.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the Schriever community to see the plethora of services and programming offered by their force support squadron and our community sponsors,” said Lt. Col. Jason Nahrgang, 50 FSS commander.

The fair provides an update to the base on the changing services available.

“We have new outdoor recreation equip-ment, great deals on season ski passes, ex-panded child care options and a new Airman and Family Readiness Center in the works; all of this just in the last month,” he said.

The expo and information fair, however, is not just a place for 50 FSS to pass on in-formation but also an opportunity to get feedback from the base.

“FSS experts and sponsor representatives from the local community will be on-site to provide information, field questions and, perhaps most importantly, solicit input from Team Schriever as to how to improve our customer offerings,” said Nahrgang. “Many great ideas have been implemented as a direct result of customer input.”

Again, the fair is Wednesday 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information contact 50 FSS marketing at 567-4740.
