2001 – A SUMMARY In 2001 the School of Economics enjoyed another successful year characterised by strong research performance, growth in student numbers and individual successes by staff and students. The School maintained its excellent performance in external grant funding with 3 successful ARC discovery grants, 2 successful ARC linkage grants as well as numerous Faculty funded grants. Robert Hill was awarded the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia Medal in recognition of his research, while both Kevin Fox and Robert Hill were both awarded Non-Professorial Research Achievement Awards by the Faculty of Commerce and Economics. 2001 saw some important personnel changes with the appointment of 2 new professors – Denzil Fiebig and Bill Schworm – both previously with Sydney University. As well, Denise Doiron (also previously with Sydney University) was appointed as a Senior Lecturer and Robert Hill was promoted to Associate Professor. The year also marked the resignations of Catherine de Fontenay, Tue Gorgens and John Landon-Lane (all fixed term lecturers) and the retirement, after 14 years of service with the School, of our administrative officer, Sue Nelson. Recent resignations among administrative staff gave the School the opportunity to reorganise its administrative support structure. A crucial part of this was the creation of a new administrative officer position into which Catriona Reid commenced in January 2001. Catriona worked tirelessly with the other members of the administrative unit – Sue Nelson, Aline Dinel and Paula Browne-Cooper - to enhance the administrative efficiency of the School. 2001 also saw some changes to academic administrative roles. Hazel Bateman replaced Glenn Otto as Associate Head of School, Peter Robertson replaced Kevin Fox as Undergraduate Coordinator and Robert Hill was replaced by Minxian Yang as Postgraduate Coordinator. Other positions remained unchanged with Trevor Stegman continuing as MCom Coordinator and Geoffrey Fishburn as Honours Coordinator. On the student side we saw strong growth in undergraduate student numbers as well as continued interest in the fourth year Honours and PhD programs. Two of our 2001 Honours students were awarded and accepted international PhD scholarships with Brendan Beare commencing a PhD at Yale and Chris Bidner at the University of British Colombia in 2001. Joanna Haddock, one of our 2000 Honours students, accepted a Fulbright Scholarship to undertake a PhD at Yale. As well we continued to support our PhD students with the creation of 4 additional half time associate lecturer positions as a form of PhD funding. Miriam Steurer, Patrick Lim, Nicolas Gerber and Xiaolin Li were appointed. Finally, many staff continued to provide valuable service to the Faculty, the University and the profession with their participation on committees, advisory boards, editorial boards etc… For the School of Economics 2001 was a year of continued academic excellence.
