MHS5005isanacademicandtrainingexperiencedesignedtopromotestudents’acquisitionanddevelopmentofspecificskillsinverbalandnonverbalcommunication,humanrelations,identificationofclient/studentissues,andproposingappropriatecounselingstrategies.Inaddition,studentswilllearnfundamentalskillsinlistening,responding,expressingempathy,andfocusingaswellasmoreadvancedskillsintheareasoffindingmeaning,reframing,effectivechallenging,leading,andactionplanning.Overall,thecoursefocusesontheidentificationanduseofbeginningfundamentalskillsneededforapersontobecomeaneffectivecounselor.Studentswilldevelopskillcompetenciesandpracticeproficiencythroughdevelopinga“counselingrelationship”throughoutthesemester,caseconceptualization,casenotetaking,andtreatmentplanning.
MHS5005ishighlyexperientialandfocusesoncounselingskillacquisition.Contentconsistsofreadings,lectures,demonstrationsandrole-plays. Studentsrecordtheirpracticecounselingsessions,participateinsmallgroupexperiences,andjournal theirexperiencesthroughoutthesemester.Studentswilllearntogiveandreceiveconstructivefeedbackoneachother’sskilldevelopment,whichwillpreparethemforpracticumandinternshipsupervision.Attainmentofbasiccounselingskillsisaprimaryobjective.Thiscourseisdesignedonacompetencybasedmicro-counselingskillsmodel.

Emphasisisplacedonstudents’effortsanddemonstrableabilitiesrequiredforethical,competentcounseling.Performanceofbasicskillsistheprimarysourceofevidenceinassessingmasteryandevaluatingcompetencies.Smallgroupsandcounselingdyadsprovideexperiencesinthedynamicsassociatedwithage,gender,race,ethnicity,religion,spirituality,sexualorientation,andsocialclass.
MHS5005incollaborationwithTheoriesofCounselingMHS6401endeavorstoenhancestudents’basicskillsandknowledge.Typically,counselingtheoriesemphasizeacognitive,behavioral,oraffectiveapproachtoworkingwithclients.StudentswillstudymultiplecounselingtheoriesinMHS6401.StudentswillhaveopportunitiestoexperiencedemonstrationsofcounselingexchangesusingthedifferentapproachesinMHS5005,butareexpectedtoprimarilyfocusonlearningthefoundationalcounselingskillsimportantregardlessoftheoreticalorientation.
Tohelpeachstudentdevelopandgrowasaskilledbeginningcounselor,acommitmenttoself-awarenessisessential.Therefore,studentsarerequiredtokeepajournalthatdocumentstheirreactions(cognitive,behavioralandaffective)totheirclassexperiencesthroughoutthesemester.

AssignmentDirections:EachcandidatewillattendeachclassperiodandDVD-recordfour(4)assignedcounselingpracticesessions.Studentswillpresentrecordedsessionsforreviewandevaluation. TheseDVD-recordingsareto bepresentedinthesequenceinwhichtheyweredevelopedtothecourseinstructorforreviewandfeedback.Selectedportionsofstudents’recordedsessionswillbecritiquedinsmallgroup.Four(4)completeDVDrecordedsessionsandfullverbatimtypescriptsof15minutesofthe counselingsessionswillbesubmitted.(Choosethebestcontinuoussequencethatrepresentsyourskills).Thecandidatewillberequiredto(a)demonstratecompetenceintheuseofthebasicmicro-counselingskillslearnedinclassand throughreadings(b)provideawritten“self-critique”oftheskillsdemonstrated,and(c)submitclinicalnotesforeachsessionalongwitha“client”file.
