HISTORY & PRESENT SITUATION:

The practice of school nursing began in the United States on October 1, 1902 when the initial role of the school nurse was to reduce absenteeism by intervening with students and families regarding health care needs related to communicable diseases.

While the nurse’s role has expanded greatly from its original focus, the essence of the practice remains the same.

The school nurse supports student success by providing health care assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting.

7 ROLES OF A SCHOOL NURSE:

1. THE SCHOOL NURSE PROVIDES DIRECT

HEALTH CARE TO STUDENTS AND STAFF

Provides careUses the nursing process to assess, plan,

implement, and evaluate care for students with chronic health conditions.

Responsible for medication administration and the performance of health care procedures that are within the scope of nursing practice

Assists faculty and staff in monitoring chronic health conditions.


2. THE SCHOOL NURSE PROVIDES LEADERSHIP FOR THE PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES


Take into account the nature of the school environment, including available resources.

As the health care expert within the school, the school nurse assesses the overall system of care and develops a plan for assuring that health needs are met.

Develop a plan for responding to emergencies and disasters and training staff to respond appropriately.

Delegation to others involves initial assessment, training, competency validation, supervision, and evaluation by the school nurse.


3. THE SCHOOL NURSE PROVIDES SCREENING AND REFERRAL FOR HEALTH CONDITIONS


Engages in screening activities in order to address potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions.

Screening activities may include: vision, hearing, postural, body mass index, or other screening.

Determination of which screenings should be performed is based on several factors, including: legal obligations, validity of the screening test, cost-effectiveness of the screening program, and availability of resources to assure referral and follow-up.


4. THE SCHOOL NURSE PROMOTES A HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT


Provides for the physical and emotional safety of the school community.

Monitors immunizations, assures appropriate exclusion from and re-entry into school, and reports communicable diseases as required by law.

Provides leadership to the school in implementing precautions for blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.

Assesses the physical environment of the school and takes actions to improve health and safety.

Addresses the emotional environment of the school to decrease conditions that may lead to bullying and violence and/or an environment not conducive to optimal mental health and learning.

Provides health education by providing health information directly to individual students, groups of students or classes.

Provide programs to staff, families and the community on health topics.

1) History - Reduce student absences by limiting exposure to communicable diseases

2) Direct Health Care - Treats injuries and acute illnesses and administers prescribed medications as directed by a student's physician.

School nursing is a type of community nursing, or nursing outside of a hospital setting that focuses practice on a particular community.

The overall goal of a student nurse is to support

student success in the learning process.

School nurses are typically hired by private schools, public schools, parochial schools or charter schools.

They may also be employed by local Board of Educations, Department of Health, universities or hospitals.

SCHOOL NURSING EDUCATION:

School nurses are registered nurses (RNs). Beyond this basic requirement, every country has different education and certification standards, so it's important to learn one’s institutions requirements before choosing a nursing school program

To become a school nurse, one will need to acquire skills and meet some requirements:

1) One will need to develop advanced skills, including the ability to practice independently, supervise others and delegate care in a community setting.

2) One will need either a bachelor degree in Nursing (BSN) or a master’s degree (MSN). Some countries require a bachelor's degree and others require a master's degree, so one needs to research the requirement in state.

3) One may be required to achieve certification as an RN as well as teacher education.

4) One may also pursue an interdisciplinary education to earn a Master’s Degree in Education, Public Health or Counseling.

nurse vary based on the type and size of school you work for, the area of the country, your qualifications and your experience.

• Today's students have more diverse and complex health problems, as well as problems caused by immigration, homelessness, divorce, remarriage, poverty, substance abuse and violence. School nurses play a critical role in coordinating school responses to all these issues.

• Job demand positively affects salaries, schedules, job openings and the availability of training institutions and government grants for education.
