Welcome
We have a number of Curtin University education students working at the school
currently. In Room 3 and S1, we have students for two weeks this term and then another
three weeks in Term 4. We also have three teachers volunteering one day a week in Rooms
10, P1 and P3. They are completing their internship in Term 3 in those classes. Please make
them welcome.
Kindy 2019 applications
A reminder to parents that we are now accepting applications for enrolment for Kindy
2019. Applications must be received in the school office by Friday 20 July 2018. If your
child turns four by 30 June 2018, please collect an Application for Enrolment form from the
front office. Kindy applications will need to be supported by the child’s birth
certificate/passport, visa grant papers if applicable, immunisation records (ACIR/Medicare
summary sheet) and proof of address (most recent gas, water or electricity bill or lease
agreement).
Please also be reminded that being enrolled for kindergarten at KPS does not guarantee a
place in Pre-primary at Kensington, unless your child lives in our local intake
area. Acceptance into Pre-primary is not automatic – you must re-apply for enrolment into
Pre-primary in 2019. Application forms for current Kensington kindy kids will be sent home
shortly.
Winter Sports Carnival
Thanks to everyone: students, staff, coaches and parents who supported this event last
Thursday. It was unfortunate that the last couple of fixtures for the outdoor sports had to be
cancelled. Only the basketball shield was awarded and Kensington PS won this shield. It
was a shame that we had thunderstorms that day. However, due to other events for our
school and other schools, it was the only available day for the event this term, so it was a case
of running it on Thursday or not at all. The children had a great time during their games and
they made a wonderful audience for the basketball at the end of the day. Thanks to Mrs
Stanford for organising our teams and Millen PS for organising the day. Please see the sports
section below for more details.
Holidays
This is my last newsletter for the term as I will be heading off to Scandinavia at the end of
next week. Miss Lisa will be taking up the principal position while I am away. I will be back
for the start of next term. I hope you and your families enjoy the Term 2 holidays when they
arrive.
Reminder – Student Reports
All semester reports will be emailed on 26th
June. Please ensure you check your emails that
afternoon. It is important parents download this on receipt as the link does not last forever (it
only lasts four weeks). We have had a number of parents ask for the reports to be sent again
because they didn’t download them straight away and when they returned to the link it no
longer worked.
Friendly Schools Plus Parent Workshop
Has your child experienced bullying? Does your child sometimes have problems sorting out
friendship issues or resolving conflict? Do you ever wonder what is normal and what is not
when it comes to social or emotional issues involving your child? Do you know what to do
to help?
The school has introduced a whole school approach to social emotional learning. All
children need support in learning how to deal with their emotions and with social
situations. We must teach them the skills they will need. While bullying is foremost on
everyone’s minds, there is more to social emotional learning than addressing bullying. We
are interested in developing mentally strong, resilient and empowered children who will
become positive contributors to society and mature, stable family members.
Never-the-less, “many students are involved in bullying at some time during their school
days. They may be bullied themselves, they may bully someone else, or they may witness a
friend being bullied. Recent research into the effects of bullying clearly indicates that
bullying can seriously affect children’s social, physical and psychological wellbeing as well
as their academic achievement. Friendly Schools research demonstrates that efforts to change
attitudes and behaviour of students are more likely to be successful if parents and families are
actively involved and feel a sense of shared ownership of the process”.
With this in mind we have organised for Erin Erceg, who trained our staff to implement the
Friendly Schools Plus program across the school, to present a workshop for parents to enable
them to support their child’s social and emotional development. Remember, the more
socially and emotionally developed your child is the better their outlook on life and the more
successful they are likely to be. So, please come along and see how you can support your
child and work with the school to build more resilient and capable children.
We will also be running regular newsletter articles on this topic as an additional strategy to
support families. See below for our first article and for the details about the parent workshop.
Aim: To introduce our school’s goals and actions for creating a friendly/supportive school
Goals for our supportive school culture
Schools are increasingly recognising the need to address bullying, resilience and social skills.
Our school will be taking further steps this year to create a friendly and supportive culture.
The resources we will use are based on evidence from 12 years of empirical research from the
Child Health Promotion Research Centre. The resource materials aim to help schools to
encourage positive social behaviour and reduce bullying behaviour. Actions we take will
include introduction of activities to prevent or reduce bullying, strategies to help students
cope with bullying and the development of social skills and resiliency factors.
Our goals are to:
Provide all students with opportunities to develop and practice getting along with
other children through classroom learning activities.
Create a positive social environment within our school which actively discourages
bullying including cyber bullying.
Continue to encourage staff, students and parents to treat all school community
members with respect, care and compassion.
Implement a clear and consistent approach to managing reported bullying incidents.
Provide parents with resources and strategies to help them communicate more
effectively with their children about bullying.

Responsibility
Responsibility means that you are willing to be accountable for your own actions. It means
that others can depend on you. You can accept credit when you do things right and you can
accept correction when things go wrong.
Congratulations to the following award winners from today’s assembly.
Winter Carnival
The Winter Carnival was held last Thursday at Curtin University in very blustery, rainy and
trying conditions. Mid way during the fourth game, the carnival was stopped due to lightning
in the area.
Basketball was the only sport to complete all its matches on the day, as they were fortunate
enough to play in the stadium. Well done to our basketball team, ably coached by Martine, as
they went through the competition undefeated and hence brought home the only shield
presented at the carnival!
Congratulations to all our students on representing our school with pride, playing the game
and showing great sportsmanship in terrible weather conditions. A special mention to the
Year 4 boys: Beau, Ryan, Ethan and Aiden who stepped up and played AFL as we were short
of players and who were fantastic. Thanks to our staff Ms Roso, Mrs Walters, Mr Griffiths
and parents Rowena, Mel and Martine for coaching our teams.
Eagle and West Coast Fever Cup
Our last fixture will be on June 15 against Lathlain at Kensington. We will be playing AFL,
basketball and netball A and B.
Running Club
Running club has commenced. We run on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8.00am –
8.30am. So far we have had 60 students come and run, ranging from Kindy to Year 6. The
faction cross country is early next term so come along and train with us.
Circus
Next week in PE, we are going to brushing up our circus skills. Ran will be in to guide us and
teach us new skills. Be prepared to be challenged.
Chatterbox Reading Club Update – Term 2
Due to small numbers in the Senior Chatterbox Reading Club, we will now be opening up to
the Junior Chatterbox members from Monday 11 June.

Meet our KPS board members
Chair – Mark Thompson
Commenced August 2015
I’m really excited about being on the Kensington Primary School Board and looking forward
to making a positive contribution. I’ve lived in the Kensington area for almost 20 years and
believe there is something special about the community we live in. My wife Samantha has
previously been involved in the P&C and my two children Leah (Year 6) and Riley (Year 3)
attend the school.
In terms of my community engagement the thing I’m most proud of is supporting Teen
Challenge (helps people with drug and alcohol addiction) over the last 6 years by raising over
$20,000 and cycling from Esperance to Perth (1000km) each year. As part of the ride we visit
regional schools to provide advice on how to avoid drug and alcohol addiction.
In terms of skills I have a diverse background from Engineering, Project Management,
Commercial and Procurement, Sales and Supply Chain. My career has been marked by key
leadership roles in operational, sales and commercial functions and significant change
programs, with a strong planning and implementation focus. In terms of leadership I’m
passionate about setting direction and helping people achieve their potential.
I have a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and post graduate qualifications in project
management. I’m also a graduate of the Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of
Leadership WA.
Outside of work, I spend time with family/friends and enjoy cycling.
