    FHES Strategic Initiative #1 -Language Arts

    1A.To improve reading analysis skills in Grades K-6 as measured by the Measurement of Student Progress

    Action Plans Desired Outcomes and Products Time Frame Implementation Notes

    1. Staff will review and emphasize current

    Harcourt Curriculum for analysis skills and

    strategies application.

    Students will increase their ability

    to demonstrate reading analysis

    skills as evidenced by MSP tests

    annually and also Measures ofAcademic Progress three times peryear.

    By improving reading analysis, weexpect to improve all areas of

    Reading as measured by the MSPand MAP.

    Students will be able to increase

    their MSP scores in ReadingAnalysis to at least 80% at gradelevels 3-6.

    Concern that the scores are good,

    but have remained flat at grades 3

    and 5.

    Staff will compare

    cohort grade

    increases over a

    two year period,with results by endof the 2013 school

    year.

    MAP scores will be

    reviewed in fall, winter

    and spring to assist in

    formative assessmentsand to develop readinganalysis plans for

    individual students.

    2. Staff will investigate Wright Group Guided

    Reading strategies for application of

    reading strategies (Funding to purchaseprofessional development and

    supplemental reading materials for K-5readers two times per week). Professional

    development investment will beworthwhile.

    Grade 2 teachers will

    use DRA as a teacher

    scored measure. Firstgrade teachers will need

    to develop anassessment. (see action

    plan #3.)

    3. Grade 1 teachers will develop and report tothe team a suitable assessment for reading

    analysis, so that the primary data can be

    incorporated in the plan.

    School is above or near80% reading

    proficiency. Gains were

    noted in 4th gradereading over the last two

    years.Note also that the MSP

    was the first year of

    administration,

    1B. To Improve Content, Organization, and Style in student Writing grades K-6

    Action Plans Desired Outcomes and Products Time Frame Implementation Notes

    1. Grade level l teams analyze and score trimesterwriting samples and score the samples using a

    1 to 4 rubric assessing other classrooms.2. Need time to share results across grade levels.3. Prompts are decided by each group with

    consistent time frames for implementation.

    Students will be able to score 3 or

    above on the writing samples.By end of 2011-

    2012 school year

    Celebration: 4th grade

    writing score increased

    substantially over thecourse of 1 year, withexceptional convention

    scores.

    4. Determine strengths and weaknesses in writingsamples to develop areas of focus.

    Staff will review language usageScores on the MAP test as a formativemeasure

    2011-2012 MSP only administered

    in grade 4 for writing.

    5. Review the use of the writing notebook for allstaff. Writing prompts will be reviewed forimpact.

    MSP scores on grade 4 will bemaintained at 80% or above

    2A. To improve student proficiency in Mathematics grades K-6 by increasing achievement at all level s

    1. Curriculum has been updated for Every

    Day Math-- more aligned to state standards

    including updated teacher guides andstudent reference books, math journals and

    trimester assessments K-6

    Staff will focus on students who

    are not at standard by

    differentiating instruction forstudents who are not at standard

    and for students who needacceleration.

    The school will work on the

    communication and articulation of

    intervention services grades K-4.
